I've gotten that one for years. Older varieties in it. I think they are owned by a company that owns quite a few of these. Basically a warehouse like Gurneys.

I have not seen that catalog.
Already ordered my seeds and trees, so I should be good to go.

Think you're right Ken. If you look on the address from Jung's, The Vermont Bean Co.,Shumway's and a few others, it's the same address. Shumway's has that "old fashioned" look to it so it maybe appeals to old farts like glenn!  ;)

Ya mean ya didn't keep it for reading material in the oval office?  :coffee: Since I'm TRYING to stay on topic today (barely), I did scorch off a chunk of pasture w/glyphosate this fall for our new garden site. On a south facing slope with access to water from the house. Some nice dark soil, guessing it's a Clarion. Been fertilizing the pasture the last several years so it's prolly OK. Easy to get at w/the chitspreader though so we'll pump 'er up before breaking it up. :happy1:

My Gurneys just came also. I almost always order something from Jungs also. My Twilley catalog came a couple weeks ago. I ordered and received some new seeds from Harris a couple weeks ago. They had a free shipping sale going. I also usually order from Johnny's. They have some really good sweet corn and melon varieties.

decided to file all my seed catalogs in the recycling file!!!!! bout the only thing i have ordered recently is the onion plants, and have not been impressed with them sooo............i'll just go with whatever store i decide to buy them in has. not spending 20 bucks on onion plants that dont produce!

the gurneys you guys talk about, is that out of hermantown mn?

The gardening stuff amazes me. You guys are sorcerers or something, or chemists, or biologists, or all 3..

I've done ok with tomato plants but never had a full garden. I think I would enjoy it if I could make time for it.

Gurneys is kind of a joke for me......their big thing is if you buy $25 worth of stuff......they give you another $25 worth of stuff. BUT.....everything is practically double the cost of other companies.I look at the nice pictures and then chuck it in the round filing cabinet.

It's kind of like all the  BS infomercials you now see on TV......they offer you something and then tell you an exerated price. Then knock off 1 payment.....and best of all they will send you 2 at that great price. I only want 1 so why can't I just buy 1 at half that great price. Every one of those companies are doing that now. Great way to sell you 2 of them. Same with Gurneys. :bs: :bs:

I ordered a Gurneys catalog yday just for s***s and giggles.  I always started my peppers inside in about mid-March, or a tad earlier. At 6 wks, they were always ready to go.
See? I didn't make any wise cracks about Glenn, being old, slow, forgetful, or empty-headed. I'm being nice.  ;D

I'm not planting cherry 'maters anymore. I have bags of them in the freezer yet. Giving them away left and right every year. I plan on one Early girl, some green tops, and I'm gonna try snap peas this year. That's it. I average 60-75 maters off the Early Girls, way enough for me.

Title: Re: Gardening 2017
Post by: Rebel SS on February 02/26/17, 11:02:34 AM
No, Monarch airlines does!  :rotflmao: Monarch's main food source is the milkweed. That's why plant lotsa them. Huge decline in Monarch's over the years. Bad deal.
Title: Re: Gardening 2017

Mike, yes they do. The hummingbird like them to. Ya need to babysit them that first year. If they come back year 2 they should make it. Since I planted them I've had more monarchs around. Ali's had there cacoons on the plants. They like hot, lots of sun.  I have the orange ones.

Post by: mike89 on February 02/26/17, 11:23:23 AM
Glenn,

so they are perennial?  that would be nice, the orange one's would match the new H-D!!  are there lots of colors? hummers would be bonus too!

thanks!!
Title: Re: Gardening 2017
Post by: glenn57 on February 02/26/17, 11:34:45 AM
Yes they are perennial. They have a really large main root. Once there planted, and established if you try to move them they will die! There is a bunch on 94 between Clearwater and Monticello. And along old 371going into Brainard. They are usually in full bloom July and August.

Title: Re: Gardening 2017

For the butterfly milkweed. I originally bought plants. Think from Jung's. Since then I saved seeds from the biggest plants and started them that way

UMM The 26th a feb UH?Thats about what 18 days? Give em time, My experience is that they are a tough to sprout seed sometimes 30 days.Makes it hard with moisture an seed contact. the bottom soil stays wet while the topsoil drys out!! Then you'll get spindly plants!Best peppers I ever ate for sweets.I put mine in around the same time an still awaitin. I put in 6 dozen seeds.Best way I found to water is a spritz a water everyother day from a spray bottle to not saturate the bottom soil,Course temps have to be at least 70 an preferable 80 after sprout the soil can cool down.I am goin to go check mine right now'I have a polinater garden sproutin bout 10 dozen different types a flower an milkweeds that sprouted days ago for that new garden. The Margrets aren t showin YET!!! keep da faith baby they'll pop

 ??? HO GOTZ DEM PEAS??
There is a story behind this post. Down in Texas my buddy grew 5 acres a some kinda brown peas,He realized prices droped so much he'd give em away rather than the time and costs to harvest, was 1996.He put a ad in the clarksfield,Tx newspaper that said free peas you pick.
The next few days we had so many older black wimmen commin over an each said "whos got dem peas" Now days when we phone each other the first thing we say when he or me answers a phone is whos got dem peas

We have some up here at the lake, seem to work good. They're not wood or that size, ours came from Amazon, they're 4' X 4' & are plastic. Google raised gardens

Pretty easy to make a frame of 2x4"s and bottom stringers with deck screws or carriage bolts, cedar fencing boards (They're cheap) for the sides and slats. Line with heavy plastic, punch drain holes, and fill.   :azn:

Raised garden beds, also called garden boxes, are great for growing small plots of veggies and flowers. They keep pathway weeds from your garden soil, prevent soil compaction, provide good drainage and serve as a barrier to pests such as slugs and snails. Also make for a great workable height, and no need to tear up your yard.

My garden is 25 ft by 60 ft. That's the biggest one. Take alot of lumber and dirt to fill. Then I got a horseradish patch AND a patch where my winter onions and rubarb are!

We went to them because the ground here is all sand. Even with the new construction in 2012-13 & the addition of a couple of inches of black dirt on top of the whole lot. The ground has so much sand that when they went to pour the basement, they decided the walls should be another 6-12" wider so they wouldn't cave in while forming it up. Since we spend more time here than in Ia & my brother likes gardening, we decided it was worth the extra time & money. I think it was ~ $150 for 3 with free shipping with Prime. Ours don't have legs but just sit on the ground. A little sand in the bottom, a bunch of potting soil, some mulch / compost from the community site in GR & they seem to work great for potatoes, peas, carrots, onions, lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, even put some raspberry bushes along 1 side.

You can also do buckets..I grew my peppers and tomatoes for years in 5 gal pails on the deck. Works great for peppers...deck gets hot in sun and they grow like crazy. Some of the poblanos and serranos went crazy big. One year I had over 75 bell peppers off two plants.  Drilled holes in bottom of buckets, put down  a piece of screen over holes, 1" sand, the rest potting veggie mix to the top.

These are about 1/3 into the growing season...got a lot bigger. Tipping over big, I used old wood broom handles in pail to hold them up later.

OK,  How about plum trees.  I have had two plum trees for two years now.  The first year I bought them they had blossoms and grew nice big purple plums.  Bees and wasps claimed a lot of them.  Didn't spray or anything except give water at times.  Second year had many blossoms and no plums at all.  Could not believe it.  Now this year I don't know what to expect.  Do I have to spray it a few times a year?  have to find a way to keep the bees off them too if I do get plums.  good luck.

RH, have you tried the place where you got them? I know we did before we bought the raspberry bushes for up here as there are so many different varieties. Differences in  soil  types, growing seasons, pest control can make big changes. Might even have some tips not in the book. How about your county extension office?

I have a Mt. Royal plum tree that has been hit and miss for its duration. Nicely shaped tree, been pruning it all along and it's very healthy. The wood is good for smoming! :happy1: It's right beside a wild plum thicket so there are lots of pollinator trees even tho the Mt. Royals are supposed to be self pollinating. Some years it blooms like mad and has a few plums, sometimes blooms and no plums and 2 years ago quite a few. Some years few blooms so no surprise when there are few plums. Delicious although the birds get after them faster than I do. Netting of some kind would be beneficial in those years. Once in a while there are some wild plums that the birds don't get. While a little tart, they're very tasty. Can't help but think they'd make some wicked jam if we ever got enough of them. Here's a link to some info which contains more links concerning pest control for your perusal. Hope it is of value to you:

"...Stone fruit trees need full sun to produce the most fruit.
Space trees 12 to 20 feet apart.
Many stone fruits are not self-fruitful. Plant two different, compatible cultivars to ensure fruit.
Prune annually to maintain tree shape and a healthy, open canopy.
Expect to get fruit 2 to 5 years after planting, if you plant a 1 or 2 year old tree.
Remember, all stone fruits bloom very early in the spring. Some years flowers are damaged by freezing temperatures, meaning no fruit that year. But don't worry, you'll probably get fruit next year..."'

How to keep bees away from your fruit tree.
"...If you want your plu tree to grow plums, you need bees to pollinate the flowers. If the tree is just ornamental and you don't care about growing plums, there are ways to avoid attracting bees...
Bees and yellow jackets are attracted to sweet smells. Spray products on the tree that don't smell good to them. One of the most common is vinegar mixed with a little water. Fabric softener sheets can be hung in the tree to repel insects. Some people use cayenne pepper, but remember, it is very irritating to wild animals, pets, and you as well.  Traps are also available that kill bothersome insects..."

I tell ya what RH, I've had plum trees for 20 years....and never got a "good" crop with them. Always have gotten small fruit from them all. And we're talking 10 plus trees....
I even bought "superior" plum trees that were suppose to bare fruit 2-3 inches in diameter to cross pollinate with the ones I had with the same luck. Always a lot of fruit, but real small compared to what you can buy in the store.

Fertilizer, watering, mulch, spraying, PH, soil ....I tried it all...I even talked to the gurus at the college to help me....nuth'in....

If you figure it out, please pass along the information!

I burn it off so the ground is black and it heats up a little faster. With the way the forecast temps look, I wouldn't be surprised to see it popping out by April 15-20. We would eat fresh Asparagus 365 around here if we could. And with that many we can some, and give a little away to friends. But not much! Little early for the rads and lettuce, but they always come. Spuds go in around Good Friday, but I will go earlier this year with it being late. None of the tomatoes or peppers go in till around May 15. Been burned to many times.

It works, but don't put it down till all your plants are growing. It works by not letting the seed sprout. So if you put it down before you plant your seeds they will not grow either. And you will need to apply it more than once during the growing season.
I'm lucky, my Preen is a teen! ;)

Years back I bought the 18 lb box a Preen.Knew It stopped seed from sprouting so I used it where I had transplant's to go in. allready rooted plants.Worked great!! Next year I seeded the area and nothing grew no sprouting!! I know the instructions said 6 months of protection BUT That stuff was still stopping seeds sprouting! I gave the whole box to a BIL an he used an hated it!!
I have a small container to try this year the gardens got so out of hand without me workin em for the last 3 years. Yer tatters should grow its seeds it stops from sprouting Tatters arent seed.

Preen contains an herbicide, trifluralin, which will only affect new seeds that are beginning to germinate. Specifically, this herbicide inhibits the growth of roots and shoots when it is absorbed by the roots of newly germinated weed seedlings. However, it doesn't affect any existing perennial weeds like dandelions, grasses or weeds that have already germinated. This is why the label states "first, remove all existing weeds."

The big question that comes to mind is: If it affects newly planted seeds, won't vegetable seeds be affected by this product? That can be a concern if this product is placed over the top of recently planted, small seeds, like carrots. Typically, large-seeded vegetable plants, like beans and peas, are not affected because the seeds are placed deeper in the soil and not up near the soil surface. Transplants are not usually affected because a root system is already developed and that root system is planted deep into the soil. Research has shown there is no significant absorption or translocation of trifluralin in crops grown in soils treated with trifluralin.

The principle of any pre-emergent herbicide is to create a weed-control barrier in the top layer of soil, preventing weed seeds from germinating. To be effective, these products must be activated either by watering or shallow incorporation into the soil. It does not move much in the soil but absorbs tightly onto clay particles and remains where it is placed at application. Once the barrier is created, any disturbance of soil in that area, by any hoeing or cultivation, provides an opening for those weeds to grow.

Contrary to popular opinion, herbicides do not stay in the soil indefinitely. And in fact, these products are broken down by soil microorganisms, which use them as a food source. For this reason, in order to have a season-long, weed-free vegetable or flower bed, it requires a reapplication of Preen in about 9-12 weeks

Your spuds will be fine. Preen is basically the same chemical as Treflan which was a chemical widely used years ago as a pre-emerge for farm use. We put it on and worked it in before planting spuds. We planted around an acre when I was I kid. It was spuds for grandpa and all 5 of my uncles families for the year.
Rebs is right about seed depth. If the seeds are planted below the preen they should still come. But I don't chance it. We still use Treflan on our pumpkin patch. But I start the plants and put them in after they are well rooted. By the time the pumpkins vine out and cover the ground, one application is good. But for your row type veggies and flowers it needs to be re applied.
I grow a garden so I don't have to buy commercial grown veggies with any chemical. We weed the old fashioned way, mulch with grass clippings, and use corn gluten to help with weed control. I believe Preen sells a organic version too. But it is just more expensive corn gluten in a bag!

Yes, you can move it. Long as you don't clip the core root you should be fine. I've moved my patch twice now and it has done well each time.

I mulch the $hit out of it, burn it in the spring. Add a little mulch every year. Not perfectly clean but pretty good.
Some say to use salt. While asparagus is tolerant of it to much can kill it. Or cause disease. As for the roundup it is somewhat tolerant of that as well. Kinda like pine trees. Once the new growth on pine trees has gotten hard ( not that light green color) they can take roundup...asparagus is the same way. It won't like it, but once established it pry won't kill it either. I use to pick wild stuff on a fence line that has been hit with chemical for years and it still comes back every spring.

I dont normally have weeds in our patch,I started some more from seed to enlarge it this year.I wait till spring to cut old brown growth an rake old mulch out,Then the last mow of the yard in fall  I save that grass for mulch, after the old brown is cleaned out I mulch it 4-6 inches deep the asparagus comes up through the mulch an weeds dont. Once I fully cut what I think I can without killing the plants I mulch again an let er grow till next spring when the process starts all over

So................If I apply Preen to this new plot, the only way that I can expand it going forward, is only by putting plugs in? (established plants)

World Naked Gardening Day is May 6th

World Naked Gardening Day is May 6th. Are you prepared?

World Naked Gardening Day is an opportunity to pull weeds, plant flowers, and harvest vegetables while getting some sun where it doesn’t usually shine.

While you might get a little dirty, the intention is good, clean, fun in the sun, and a move towards becoming more comfortable in our skin with “non-sexual nudity.”

nspired by World Naked Bike Ride events, Mark Storey (consulting editor for Nude & Natural magazine) and permaculturalist Jacob Gabriel founded World Naked Gardening Day as a project of Body Freedom Collaborative (BFC). Some of Storey’s other mischievous pranks are rooted in guerrilla gardening in urban environments.

Corky Stanton of Clothes Free International assisted Storey with web hosting and promotion of the project. Stanton also provided web hosting and promotion for World Naked Bike Ride from the beginning of the project.

The event is not intended to be a large gathering at any particular location, but something people can practice on their own time and at their own will, however they please. Storey notes in the New York Daily News that,

“No particular organization owns World Naked Gardening Day.”

The website acted as a seed for the concept, which has been left to grow organically on its own through participants providing the necessary nutrients in order for it to continue to grow.

The first annual World Naked Gardening Day event took place on September 10, 2005. In 2007, the event date was moved to the first Saturday in May where it still takes place to this day. The day before, International Permaculture Day, also takes place on the first Sunday of May.

Beyond the fact that the event is fitting to coincide with good weather, the objective was not to conflict with with the World Naked Bike Ride. Besides, spring is the ideal time of year to be in the garden anyway.

The event is intended to be non-political, and more about creating a positive body self-image.

“It’s not about exposing your body to other people,” said Stanton, in an interview with Today. “It’s about body acceptance and being one with nature on your own. … We actually do these events in secluded areas.”

Special thanks to the hosts of the World Naked Gardening Day website for allowing the use of these photos.

Asparagus expands by both seeds and roots. As long as you have female plants growing. They develope little red balls that are the seeds. They will come up the next year. But those little plants take a long time to produce spears big enough to eat.

Does asparagus expand by root or seed?
Both. But with those baby roots it will be awhile before they produce any seed or asparagus to eat anyway. And you would also have to have both male and female plants. Guessing by the size of your plants it will be 3 years before you harvest anything of any size from them.

And Mike, unless you want to see something that might hurt your eyes, don't come for my asparagus on the 6th of May! :laughroll: :laughroll:

Planted my tomatoes and peppers over the last couple days. Also have peas, radishes, set onions, kale, beets and lettuce in the ground. Very possible that I will have to cover the maters and peppers some night in the future but I got tired of babysitting those potted plants so in the ground they went. I said potted plants reb not pot plants.

Pretty simple. Cut up some onions. Mix some apple cider vinigar with about a cup of heavy whipping cream. I don't measure, just do it to taste. Mix altogether with your lettuce. Little salt and pepper.
Man it was fantastic! Been craving it since January!!!!

Real close to 2.03" at the ranch, 2.3" at the neighbors pasture and about 2.5" in Bugtussle proper since Monday. Will be able to see more closely how much in town in the a.m. Not a lot of rain relative to some places but it'll be 7 straight days with measurable precip. Today is another yucko. Cold and breezy with scattered patches of drizzle moving through. Only major gardening move I made was planting the cannas last Monday. Starting to look like I'll need to employ the Round Up scorched earth policy to burn off the annual bluegrass cover on the main garden before I can start there.

I don't bag every time. But I will this time. I did get most of mine cut yesterday,(what's not under the river) a little wet to bag so I'm gonna hit again later today and get the worst spots picked up. I do use the clippings for mulch in my gardens and it works great.
I love watermelons, the rest you can keep. I quit trying to grow them however. Not sure if I don't have the right soil or more to do with growing season length. Seems to freeze most years before they get ripe....take up a lot of space and get just a few that are edible

Lots and lots of watermelons going through the DC right now. I spose a lot of graduation receptions will be using them. I generally wait till they are more "in season" too, they seem sweeter then. Yes I like them and muskmelons too. Honeydew not so much.

I just use Miracle grow weekly, after planting everything in the ground with some bags of Miracle gro Garden soil mixed it. Other than an occasional plant spray of soap and water to repel bugs, and a weekly watering of Miracle gro for 'maters, my stuff does great. My 'mater's are zooming along and already flowering out!!!!    :azn:

Radishes were harvested and 4 o'clocks planted in their space. Not the greatest radish crop. Quality was good but lots of them had top growth but not much for bulbs. Finally had a chance to garden over the weekend. Saturday's howling sirocco meant little was done so Sunday between a graduation and lawn mowing, I got 54 hills of vine crops planted betwixt direct seeded and transplants, 9 rows of sweet corn, a row of Reb's fave's, string beans, 11 'maters and 4 jalapeños. I left a fallow area for late summer seeded stuff like radishes and snap peas. Doesn't always click but when it does, it's worth it. Mrs. Cheviot also got her planters all established and the hummingbirds were working them over the next day.  :happy1:

not sure is anyone needs anymore greenhouse plants but fleet farms got some really good deals, the one in waite park/st cloud anyway. i needed to replace some mater plants cause i thinks me got to close with the roundup, not sure why it took so long for the plants to have the effects but.........

anywho, they were marked at 1.99 for a pack of 4..............when i paid for them they were a buck a piece.

walking in i noticed the rack of these hen n chicks for 9.99. i new that was a good deal for them. called the wifey, she went in sunday morning, grabbed 2 paid and they were half price, so she went back and got 2 more.

Stuff is looking good here other than my large garden is a little full of weeds. Haven't had much time with youth baseball this summer! Although I put a dent on them Saturday.
Tournament starts Tuesday and ends Saturday! Sad and happy all at the same time. After a week I'll be waiting for next season to start, but it will leave me a little more time to visit here and keep the garden clean!
We put the scoreboard up today. That was a nice addition! Especially since we host the 7/8 grade tourney this year!

It was time to check on the gardens.  I've neglected them for a while now.  I figure plant enough and hopefully you will get some produce.

Grapes are doing fine on their own
(http://i67.tinypic.com/2eev8ud.jpg)

Flowers are going gang busters
(http://i68.tinypic.com/el5q9f.jpg)

Tomatoes and cucumbers are doing fine, potatoes and onions, not so much

Here's a photo of our garden this year. Two rows of sweat corn, a couple pumpkin plants, five or six cucumbers plants, three rows of green beans, peas, a couple squash plants, a couple zucchini, four pepper plants, two egg plants, two tomato plants, and we had a lot of asparagus, but we’ve let them go to seed now.

Think I'm done with pickles, I have 30 quarts done of one kind....may do some more of the 🍞 and butter....but I have Pepper's coming out my 👂's....time to dehyrate. Picked a little tonight, but I could easily pick a 5 gallon bucket.

So dehydrating is the way to preserve peppers?  We froze our jalapenos the last couple years.  They look great frozen but are real soft when thawed out.  Good idea on the dehydrating of them.  I will have to learn how to do that now.  Need another toy. A dehydrator is on my list now.

so HD, what kind of peppers do you all dehydrate? Do you mix them up, crush them?? I buy these crushed red peppers and thought of brewing up a concotion similar when the jug I have is gone.

Barry...get this one!!!! Usually go on sale about now at Fleet Farm for $55. LOVED MINE! Lotsa great features others don't have...dried lotsa peppers and jerky in mine. Precise temp setting is necessary for food safety with jerky, this has all different temp settings and horizontal airflow. Five big trays stack on top of each other, can use as many or few as ya want. I heartily recommend it!    :happy1:

Once in a while we get a mature Anaheim that surprises us in how hot it is. If ya can't shoot that critter trap it, either a live trap or a leghold. A bit of corn with some peanut butter smeared on it would work great.

Counted fifteen in the yard a few weeks ago!  I just picked 9 beauties, about 15 more just about ready. I've already eaten 15 so far... :azn: Not too bad for one plant that got a late start. They're all perfect too; no cracks or poor spots.

hey reb, maybe you can help me out?? I gotz so darn many green maters yet. so I be trying an experiment and I don't remember how this goes???????  is it you but green maters in a brown bag put them in a warm spot and they ripen faster, or is it put ripe maters in a brown bag and put in a cool spot to keep them for an extended period of time?

either way I/m looking to speed up the ripening process!!!!!!!!!
Title: Re: Gardening 2017
Post by: Rebel SS on September 09/21/17, 09:34:20 AM
Why speed it up? Slow ripen, I'm eating fresh ones at Thanksgiving every year!! Really! OK, here's how it goes: wrap 2 or 3 in a 1/4 sheet of newspaper, continue on until all wrapped, then I put the pile in a cardboard box down in basement where it's COOL.  Takes about a month to turn red, or even longer. If ya put them all together, I find it doesn't work as well. 2 or 3 works best. If ya GOTTA hurry, put a bunch in paper sack where it's room temp, and toss an apple in. 'maters and apples give off the same gas (ethylene)  that helps them ripen...and yes, they really DO taste like rigdht off the vine.  :azn:
