We had 2 show up when da weather picked up. I went to change the feeder and brought it in da house.
all of a sudden there were small ants crawling on da counter. Upon closer review wit my glasses on I noticed they were from da feeder. There was even dead ones inside the chamber.

How do I prevent them from climbing da poll 7ft up to da top. :violin: Help! face_plant-2139.gif

:happy1:  It seems like when we have a lot of wind they are a pretty scarce around here too. I'm surprised you see any. ;) :rotflmao:  Seriously though, we have 2 feeders out & the only 1 we see them at, when it's real windy, is the 1 on the south side of the cabin & back on the edge of the woods. The other is along the shoreline & we rarely see them there when it blows very hard.

We have bee hives across the hwy from us.  They are about 400 yds from our house.  We have 2 humming bird feeders right outside our windows.  This time every year the bees start eating the sugar water and grape jelly we have out.  This year there has been hundreds of bees here.  The hummers can't get close to the feeders.  May as well take them down.

Saw one at the ranch this a.m. working the feeder. Cleaned and refilled the feeders for what is most likely the last time for the year. Heard one buzzing around about dusk so hopefully I get a glimpse of it in the morning. They had left the cabin in Canada several days ago according to a friend there who also feeds the hummers. We refilled those feeders too just in case but unlikely they'll be used. Always a little bit of a bummer when they leave. Means we're getting closer to putting up with this crap again.

Good news: Still at least one hummingbird here at lunchtime. Working on the potted plants and cannas. As an added bonus there was also a white-lined sphinx moth working over the impatiens. In addition a sasquatch happened by so need to clean out their feeder tonite. Don't want them to feel left out. :happy1:

Still at least one hummingbird here yet. Saw it as I was walking towards the garage after chores. It was working over the flowering pots on the north side of the garage. Saw one last nite too on the cannas by the well when I was filling the brood ewes' water tank. One of these days the hummers will be gone. Oh well, at least I can still feed the sasquatch.  :happy1:

had very few this summer, put out extra feeders hoping to attract more  little hummer's,didn't work.however they seemed to like my trumpeter vine flowers more than feeders?,I used store bought hummingbird  nectar and also made my own sugar water, neither were a hit, what do you guyz use?
Title: Re: Hummingbird birds
Post by: Dotch on September 09/17/20, 10:30:01 AM
Still going full bore here. Seems like once the flowers start to wane they pack up and head south. Got to clean and refill one of their feeders with some fresh sugar water. Might last until they leave.

Snow: Just using standard 4:1 water to sugar ratio in our feeders w/o any food coloring. The one feeder is actually an oriole feeder but the hummingbirds love it so I leave it up. We've got a wide range of flowers from petunias, coleus, impatiens, salvia, morning glories, 4 o'clocks and cannas. All seem to get hit by the hummers at some point. It varies by summer as to their favorites here. This year they've seemed to lean heaviest on the 4 o'clocks, morning glories and cannas. They use the feeders too and appear to spend more time chasing each other around than feeding.

Now that you mention it I haven't seen a hummer yet today neither.  That 28.5 this morning may have chased them away.  We too just use the 4:1 water sugar ratio.  I just use hot tap water when I make it and stir till the sugar has dissolved.

Can't tell you on color snow. Have two main morning glory sites. Haven't noticed any preference. They seem to hit the flowers on the site pictured in the a.m. Most of the birds coming thru now appear to be younger birds based on their small size and color. Haven't seen a male with the ruby throat for several weeks.

Is that a morning glory?  I didn't know they got so tall.  I may have to plant them on our power poles.  Will it be easy to trim where my power box is?
Title: Re: Hummingbird birds
Post by: Dotch on September 09/17/20, 04:29:15 PM
It's numerous plants of course Barry that come back from seed every year. They don't always grow like they did this year tho. Lots of heat and timely rains with extended dry periods between rains so they really took off. Helped keep leaf diseases to a minimum too. Pictured is last year's model in the same spot taken on Sept. 6th. One always wonders in May if they'll ever amount to much. Before you know it though they climb over 10' and pollinators including hummingbirds are loving life.

Not sure where your power box is but they are aggressive, out competing vegetation nearby once established. Morning glories are originally from tropical America. The vines are like rope once they start climbing. Escaped morning glories are a weed in parts of the corn belt, wrapping around crops and clogging harvest equipment. They do tend to spread but are easily controlled by chemical and early on by cultural methods. The seeds contain LSA which is a cousin to LSD. That's why some places locally wouldn't sell the seeds to high school kids once word got out.  :mysterymachine:

Probably not as long as it's grass and especially if it's mowed. You can see by the photos how far from the pole they spread. Each spring I start out mowing within a foot or so of the pole. Eventually they just kinda spread out a few feet more around it & I give them some space.

LOL dotch...your insight brought back memories, early 70's,road trip to Vail colorado, summer time, camping in a van ,ran in to hippies one day camping near us,they were making "morning glory wine" from seeds, never new the history of the seeds till your thread, thanx, hippies said the seeds gave them a good cheap buzz...lol.

LPS,agree with dotch on glories, only planted glories both morning and moon glories once few years back along my privacy fence which the vines cover up nicely, come back every summer.for my hummers they love the "trumper vine flowers I  planted the vine seeds 5 years ago on my yard pole light pole, they grow up to 50',bloom clusters of orange nectar filled flowers hummers seem to love.

They're still here. When I got back from raking hay, I heard their familiar squeaking sound emanating from the tomato cages, their favorite place to hide. Unless they move it's almost impossible to see them in the foliage. Sorta reminds me of that squeaking sound on MNO. Can't figure out where it's coming from... :rotflmao:

So, these morning glories...they are a veining flower? And the grow from seeds every year? Do you start them early?

Yes, they are vining. Just about anything works as a trellis. Hunks of hog panel, wire gates, ear corn tunnels, etc. They are annuals & grow from seed every year. Typically though you plant them once in a spot and they reseed themselves so you usually don't have to plant them again. They usually don't get going here until about mid-May. The only time I've planted new seed is if I want to change the color pattern up a little. That generally works better on newer plantings. The massive amount of seed produced by an established planting like the ones pictured makes it like peeing in the ocean.

A friend of ours gave us a sedum plant. Couldn't believe how fast the bees found that when I stuck it in the flower bed. Headed up to the greenhouse to see is they got a couple more.

Never see them in flocks but that doesn't mean much. Most of the stuff seems to indicate they don't group up much. Still one here this a.m. 4 o'clocks are still flowering like mad. Will have to save some seed soon.

Been awhile since I seen one but my feeder with home maid nector is almost gone so they must be around mid day?,I'm told some hummer's hang around until freezeup.

Side note, monachs have showed big time lately, had a couple dozen hangin on my tree's lately.

Just checked back in my columns and noted the hummers were last seen at our feeders Sept. 29th last year & the 30th the year before. In town sometimes the gal at the grocery store I compare bird watching notes with will see them a few days longer than we do. She told me recently about putting more jelly out for the orioles. Her 3 years old granddaughter was convinced there was a dimple out of what was still in the dish. Never argue with 3 year-olds when it comes to filling bird feeders she said.

Saw no hummingbirds this a.m. at the feeders.  Doesn't necessarily mean they're not around as snow said previously. Have seen them show up after a day or so missing them in the morning. Still plenty of clean nectar in the feeders and flowers for them to feed on.  :happy1:

Well its been a couple weeks,no hummer's and full nector feeder's so maybe its time to pull em,one more week as temps will rise again next week, but got a feeling they bugged out, hoping for some migrators to stop bye, monarchs are gone too, watched 100's of night hawks migrate the other evening all heading south bobbing and weaving as they went.

Roger the chasing.    I see all those pictures of feeders with multiple hummers on them.     I never have more than one, and that one will hang around to chase off any others...  And it is like that all summer.

Haven't seen any hummers at our place yet but have had a nectar feeder out since Friday that both the hummers and orioles can use. Jelly feeder w/oranges was also put out. Roony did spot an oriole late last week. This cooldown along with the slow development of leaves & flowers primarily outside of municipalities & wooded areas may slow their sightings elsewhere.

There are several migration progress sites when you search for them. Here are a couple:

They were nuts here last nite around dark too. Between the flowers and feeders they're like kids in a candy store. I have no idea how many orioles we have. At least a couple pair each of orchard and Baltimore's & an assortment of immature birds of both species. And catbirds.

Home brew. Early year 3 to 1 water/ sugar mix with red food coloring. Same ratio in the fall. Summer 4 to 1.
Orange is for orioles.

reading up on our feeders birder's claim food coloring is harmful to hummer's also in warm weather our feeders need regular cleaning as mildew will kill these tiny birds, have a friend that is a ornithologist, worked many years at our U of M,infact he headed the bird museum at the U now teaching, residing in nebraska, interesting feller, earlier in life he showed me pic's of one of his many field trips collecting bird species, this one event he spent a few weeks collecting hummingbirds in south america, claimed they used badmitten nets to capture them, the goal was to collect as many species for grad students to study back here in minnesota,,they/ he would stuff these birds for years of doing research,he had a 1900 era passenger pidgeon stuffed  that came with the museum when he took over I had a chance to see up close, looked like a large mourning dove with tail feathers like a pheasant

this doctor of science tells me sugar water like you discribed glenn is the best source for our feeders, guess my metro minn area isn't a hot spot for hummer's,they sure are interesting critters.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard-and my personal experience is-that nearby water enhances your chances of attracting these guys. That doesn’t explain the plethora of humming bird varieties that inhabit the desert southwest, but I know the ruby throated ones around here seem to be more prevalent where there’s a natural water source nearby.
To Glenn’s point, they have been crazy around here lately. I got buzz bombed tonight taking window boxes of red geraniums down to shelter them from the likely frost.
A good, but slightly dated, source of information for all kinds of bird feeding are books authored by George Harrison—not the late Beatle.

Title: Re: Hummingbird birds
Post by: LPS on May 05/26/21, 08:43:30 PM
I don't use any coloring.  Just 4 to 1 water to sugar.  I just use warm tap water.  I used to heat it on the stove but don't do that any more.  We have hummers around again this year.  I fill my feeders maybe once a month.
Title: Re: Hummingbird birds

You may need to not fill them so full LPS, and fill them more often. That sugar water can get pretty rancid in the heat.

Ours get filled with nectar that's been warmed in the microwave with no food coloring. Easy for me to tell if it goes bad as it gets cloudy. Usually need to refill ~ every 2 weeks or so here. It doesn't seem like we have as many as normal this year yet though.
Title: Re: Hummingbird birds
Post by: roony on May 05/27/21, 08:38:13 AM
No coloring for us. We fill our two feeders about one fourth full and refill more often so it stays fresher and we can dump the bugs out.
Title: Re: Hummingbird birds
Post by: Dotch on May 05/27/21, 10:54:52 AM
I use hot tap water & mix a 4:1 water to sugar ratio a quart at a time. No food color. Store the leftover in the fridge. Usually fill nectar feeders 1/4 to 1/2 full. Like Gunner I kinda monitor the feeders. If the mixture gets cloudy or full of bugs, I clean the feeders out good and put fresh stuff in. When it's warm it needs changing more frequently.

They are going nuts here out west, funny watching one feed and then sit on a branch waiting to chase off the next one that shows up. We have a small and a perty big feeder here but the in-laws in sconi have lots of little feeders scattered around which seem to work pretty good, maybe no bulling that way.. might have to try it perhaps.

Still no hummer's at my place, however only put one feeder out and a couple store bought nectar type flower bokay's,not sure where the  feeder nectar is going? flies found the feeder so maybe the insects are lapping the sugar water up?,I usually sit out in the pole barn smoking cigars so keeping a close eye on the feeder for hummers, might put the second one out tonight and hope for the best.

on a side note ,dotch pegged my downy wood pecker, tough little some beech as he has taken control of my large willow tree, thinking mama has a nest somewhere ,this little downy won't let any other birds perch on the tree,he runs them all away.

Currently keeping tabs on my 93yr old father in senior care,it's day by day health wise for him, last of my family so once he passes,I'm set, bought a chunk of land last summer and added to it this past summer, seem's alot of farmers in the dakota's are retiring early in life due to corporate farming, family I bought my land from mom & pop past away couple years ago, hunted this land for 20 years, oldest son took over the operation and decided he is done farming at 60yrs old...Don't blame him one bit, tough life as you know.

Was watching a Nat Geo special on Chile last nite...were showing the various Hbirds they have down there. (About the same as here) Interesting as heck, said their hearts beat upwards of 1,000 times a minute, and when collecting nectar, their tongues dart in and out 15-20 times a second. That's faster then Glenn's licking the sauce off a Lotsa Slopsa pizza.

Very few hummer's in my neighborhood for some reason,I'm facinated by them, have a good friend who is a ornitholigist at the UofM... very interesting but dry fellow, great stories and travels collecting different bird species from around the world for his grad students to study.

One interesting expedition brought him to south America to collect hummingbirds,he also is head keeper of the bird museum at the U,spent hours walking through this museum, they even have a passenger pidgeon mounted on display, been extinct since the early 1900's very interesting to check out iffin one has time.

Another expedtion he went to antartica to collect sea birds off a coast guard cutter.what a life. But that's another story.

Didn't see any hummingbirds this a.m. but will be stopping sometime after lunch to check on them. Certainly wasn't the circus it was a few weeks ago when I was watching yesterday.

Saw one on the nectar feeder after chores this a.m. We have two nectar feeders. The glass oriole nectar feeder that the hummers also liked developed a crack in it a couple cleanings ago. It's kept getting larger until this a.m. when I decided to toss it, rather than have it split open & slice my hand. Pretty sure there won't be any more orioles. I replaced it with a spare nectar feeder & cleaned out the other one. Mixed up another half-batch of nectar so we'll see how much longer they go.

Afeared we're gonna hafta call it here having seen no specimens since Saturday. Still fresh nectar in their feeders & plenty of flowers still blooming should there be a straggler passing thru. It's been fun having them.  :happy1:

Just saw a hummingbird working on the cannas by the well! The previous record at the ranch was Oct. 9th. May want to come in the house & have something to really warm up on tonite.

Feeder still going down but I think the culprit is the chickadee I saw yesterday sitting on it chowing down.   That was news to me...

I can't believe what I just saw! The wife must've forgotten to hit the garage door button. I noticed the outdoor thermometer had already warmed up to 41. Odd. The floor heat in the garage was on so when I peeked and noticed the overhead door was open, I hit the button to close it. There was a hummingbird hovering just outside the doorway as it started to come down! A few minutes later I checked the other outdoor thermometer just to see what the temp actually was. The hummingbird was still out there working on the blue salvia in the planters. I was positive after seeing the one yesterday that was it. Thought about taking the nectar feeders down this weekend too. Leaving them up another week yet.

Prolly overkill but I emptied, cleaned and refilled both the nectar feeders with half a batch mixed a hair more than 4:1. The sugar water in the one feeder was starting to look just a little cloudy. Don't want to make any of the little tykes sick on their way south.
