Speaking of glenn I wonder if he has those precious garden stakes stashed away in a safe place for winter? :cheesy:

Dat's a good idear Reb. I got an old plastic water tank that's cracked and leaks. Sorta like you & LPS!  :embarrassed: Fill the thing with a mixture of soil and sheep excrement then see what happens. One nice thing about it: I can pick it up and stick it inside with the skidsteer. Maybe extend the growing season if possible.  :happy1: Going to see if I can find a few Mexibell seeds. Looks like a bell pepper, not super hot but just enough burn to let you know it's there.

Set yourself up for a great year in the garden!
Gardening season is almost here! It’s time to brush up on everything…

How to start your own seedlings

Seed catalogs are filled with dreams that grow into reality: A perfectly straight and early stringless bush bean. A dahlia in the most vibrant color you can imagine. The same tomato that South Dakota settlers grew in 1845.

Dreaming doesn’t do you much good, though, if you order a whole pile of seed packets without the slightest idea of how to grow them. Some seeds do well placed directly into the soil. But others need to be started indoors in order to maximize the growing season. For instance, peppers and tomatoes should be started by the end of March, and cool crop seeds including broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower by the end of April, says Scott Moon, owner of Sargent’s Gardens in Rochester. “The first couple years, there’s a bit of a learning curve,” Moon says.

To lessen the learning curve, we have a little guide for how to start your own seedlings if you’re ready to get your hands dirty.

Container type

Seeds will germinate in many conditions, but ideally, you want containers with good drainage or drain holes in the bottom, Moon says. Popular choices include:

Containers or kits with draining holes in the bottom, on a tray with a plastic cover
Egg cartons
Peat pots
Newspapers
Dirt style

The type of dirt you use matter a lot. Don’t use regular dirt dug up from your yard or garden to start seeds. Moon recommends a seed starting mixture that contains peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. This cuts down on weeds, gives proper drainage, and overall increases your chances of success. Potting soil may have too much fertilizer or be too heavy for seeds. Moon says to water the mixture and follow the directions on the seed packets before planting instructions.

Growing location

Seeds will do best in a location that is bright and warm. Once your seeds are settled in their containers, you’ll need an artificial light source (warming lights) and a heating mat for underneath your containers to encourage growth.

You’ll also need a dome or cover (plastic would work) for your container(s). Timing plays a role in success with covering. Keep seeds covered until you see sprouts. As soon as germination occurs, pull that dome or cover off. This time of germination is Moon’s favorite part – there’s something magical about it that never gets old. “It’s that whole experiencing Mother Nature and working with the dust,” he says.

Make sure your seedlings stay watered, and watch them grow. If they start leaning toward the light source, rotate the containers around or move the light to another spot.

Hardening off and how to do it

Hardening off means preparing plants to live outside. If you put your seedlings in the ground without hardening off, they are at risk of shock, which may slow future growth and potentially stunt your plant. In Minnesota, spring brings a variety of temperatures. Seedlings are used to a protected, controlled environment. To harden off your young plants, introduce them to the outdoors for a few hours each day, adding time until they are spending 7 or 8 hours a day outside. At first, they may need shelter. However, after about a week, they should be strong enough to stay outside. Keep an eye on the weather, though! Strong winds have been known to topple young plants, or a sudden rainstorm could drown them.

Once your plants are hardened off, it’s time to plant. Then sit back and watch your garden grow.

Glenn, Like I told you before, I start my seeds on the top of the boiler in my shop. I just stuck a digital thermometer in a little starting pot on there to find out just what the temp is and the reading was 84 degrees. Some spots on there are a little cooler and some a little warmer I suppose. I hope this helps.

Of course its not worth it if you think your time is worth anything. I enjoy it though. I suppose none of gardening is really worth it but its kinda fun to grow your own stuff..... as long as you don't get too carried away. I have a tendency to go a bit overboard and make it too much work for the warden and I.

When the glacier recedes maybe I can think about gardening. Went out to the back garden where the cutworm moth trap is and snow is 2' - 3' deep out there. The hazelnuts with the tree wrap on them are back under the snow again. Oh goody.

I hosed out the central AC, which sits on a pad between the house and deck. The water just rose up over the edge of the pad and didn't sink into the ground, must be frost in there yet a ways down.

Too wet in my garden to do much. The winter onions are looking great, thanks Glenn. Rhubarb is going strong but no sign of asparagus emerging yet. If we get a bit of rain that will bring it up. I know the farmers are anxious but I think it's plenty early and a nice rain will bring the last of the frost out.

WOW how time fly's. Already planting time!! I have the garden tilled but didn't bother starting anything indoors this year. This summer I plan on building a small green house with an almost free heating system.. Not sure about the idea of heating for free but I will let you know if it works and will surly be willing to sell my idea for a nominal price!! Plan on heading to Duluth some time next week to try dip some smelt and sometime in between getting a few of the early seeds in the ground as it looks to be warm from here on out. Carrots onions so an and so on..

I'm a double cropper on spring radishes so typically not real concerned about the bolting. I harvest them, process them, toss the greens over the fence to the sheep and the area gets planted to something else for the duration of the growing season. In that spot it'll be zucchini or crook neck squash of some kind. The seed I planted was leftover from last year's late summer seeding, Cherry Belle and a blend of different types. That is one of the beauties of the late summer radish seeding that's ready in Sept. They usually don't bolt. I have a couple packages of new seed too I was hoping to plant, one is Cherry Belle and the other escapes me. Hell to get old.  :surrender:

During winter when I was real bored I made a whole bunch of them Nice way to plant prefect spacing.
Just some TP cut in strips and kindergarten glue flour an water holds the seed in the TP folded over. Can ya tell I was bored?

So ya just stick the seed on the "glue" on a piece of TP, spaced how ya want?

Nice setup HD.  I made some 3 x 7 garden boxes about 3 years ago and they are pretty cool but to not have to bend over would really be nice.  So is that regular dirt in those?  Just wondering about the weight issue.  I showed them to the wife now she wants them.  So do I.

when I first plant my tomatoes, cabbage and pepper plants I put the old metal 3 lb coffee cans around them to assist in watering them as well as to help protect them.

today I took them all off, I definitely think this intense heat is affecting the plants. picking up those cans as well as rocks in the garden they were really warm.

dang its ugly outside.

I happened to go to Menards for some new tomato cages. While I was there I found a couple things on clearance. They had kohlrabi in 6 packs for .94
So I bought 4 trays to fill the spot the radishes were.

Then..... I found a whole wine barrel for $89
I'm going to use it to cover up my well and put a glass top on it with a 🐦 bath.

We planted Romaine lettuce in two of our flower boxes on the deck.  Works great.  We go out and cut a bunch and then rinse it and put in a gallon zip lock in the frig.  Makes salads for about 3 days.  By then it has grown up and we cut again.  Great tasting letttuce.  We love salads but get tired of buying it in the stores and throwing half of the head away.  I think we will do a grow light thing this winter in the basement for it too.  I told the wife with all of the money we are saving I may get a new boat.....??.

I finally had time this morning to weed and tend the gardens.  Man things really grew up while I was doing other fun stuff.  Also tied up all the tomato plants so the fruit isn't on the ground.  Had a nice crop of potato bugs going so I threw everything I had at them.  Not sure just what kills them.  Onions are doing great and I just had to eat a few to prove it.  Picked a few cucumbers also.  I hope things don't get away from me while I'm gone next week.

back in the day when i planted spuds i used some type of powder. worst part then dang bugs moved over to the tomatoes. i havent planted potatoes in years so i am not sure whats out there.

i've been waging war on box elder bugs. been using a SEVIN product, ive been so disgusted and frustrated with that product i finally threw it out. it was a white liquid, always clogged the sprayer, seperated from the water so i'll be looking for something different.

We had a limestone foundation on our house in Stillwater.  We had thousands of boxelder bugs on the foundation every year.  I heard that about the soapy dishwater being thrown on the bugs.  Well I did it and they all left.  Never came back and we were there for another 10 years or so.

Dish soap worked forme,57 you got a food source That Sliver maple they love the sap, seed an leaf. They got their name cause the were found on Boxelder trees and that maple is its first cousin.Try dish soap on the tree trunk from ground up as high as you can.

already have an outbreak of young elder bugs, they get all balled up on south facing structure and wood fences,100's in a basket ball size lump, must be a sex party of sort?,tried the dawn soap in  my sprayer all it did was dispurse the little vermon, maybe they ran off and died who knows.

I use this on the end of the hose. Mynards, Home Despot, $6. Spray sides of foundation and on the rock edging around house. Been using it for years. Couple years ago, put up overhead door and just about had to shovel the dead box elders off the ground. Had a sidewalk ant problem last year of them sneaking in somewhere around one rec room window, from behind the paneling. Finally figgered they were underground under all the rocks out front. Sprayed the rocks good and let it soak in. Yup. Dat took care of DAT.  Just be careful spraying on flowers or plants, it won't hurt them, but it WILL kill the bees. Don't wanna do that.  :azn:

Oh Delmar.... :whistling:

DNR: birdfeeders can lead to return visits by bears

Rochester, Minn. (NBC) -
A lot of homeowners set up feeders to enjoy visits from various winged visitors.

But those birdfeeders can attract unwanted guests, like bears,  and it may not stop be just a one-time occurrence.

While it might be neat to see a bear from the safety of your living room, according to the Department of Natural Resources it could come back.

Last week, a bear paid a visit to a homeowner's birdfeeder near viola and enjoyed some food, and caused some minor damage to the birdfeeder. One was also seen in rural Rochester.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, bears are not frequent visitors to the Southeast part of Minnesota.

"We've had a few reports in the Southeast part of the state of bears this Spring," said Rochester Area Wildlife Supervisor Mike Tenney It's not very common to have bears in this part of the state, but occasionally bears will wander through."

But here's why bears and birdfeeders might be a problem.

"Feeding bears is not a good idea because once they have developed a taste or a tradition of coming to a certain site for food thatt they like, they'll keep coming back," said Tenney.

So what should you do if you see a bear eating out of your birdfeeder?

"Enjoy it; typically bears when they see a person or hear a person coming they don't stick around very long. They usually leave," said Tenney.

According to the DNR, if you have a food source on your property, simply removing it may solve the problem.

"One thing that homeowners should also understand is that if there are bears around, keeping their garbage enclosed in a container is a good idea, instead of having it just laying out in a bag," said Tenney. "Feeding animals outside like cats and dogs is usually not a good idea."

Wildlife managers and conservation officers said that the majority of bear-related calls they receive involve bears destroying birdfeeders.

Our garden has been growing pretty slow this summer. We are starting to get a few tomato's. The green beans just began flowering last week. The cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and zucchini have had some recent growth spurt. The asparagus has been producing steady but I'm starting to let a few go to seed. Our green peppers haven't flowered yet. Here's a picture.

I'll beat Del to the punch.....

Aluminium oxide is not very reactive and so protects the underlying metal from further damage. Aluminium acetate (the compound that forms when aluminium metal reacts with vinegar) is soluable so if you were to be scrubbing the surface of the aluminium while in contact with vinegar, it would slowly be eaten away.

Is the pan coated aluminum? Or bare aluminum? I know that all of the information I have, is not to use bare aluminum pans in the brine or in the liming process. ( Most likely from the "chemical" reaction)

If the pan is coated, the vinegar or lime wouldn't come in contact with the aluminum. I would believe, that would be fine.... I'll do some checking....

This was pulled off the canning history website...

TYPES OF PICKLES

Fermented pickle vegetables below the surface of the brine. A glass jar filled with water makes a good weight.

Containers and Weights for Fermentation:
Pickles and sauerkraut can be fermented in large stoneware crocks, large glass jars or food-grade plastic containers. If you're not sure whether a plastic container is safe for food, read its label or contact its manufacturer. Another option is to line the questionable container with several thicknesses of food-grade plastic bags. Do not use aluminum, copper, brass, galvanized or iron containers for fermenting pickles or sauerkraut.
The container needs to be large enough to allow several inches of space between the top of the food and the top of the container. Usually a 1-gallon container is needed for each 5 pounds of fresh vegetables. Sauerkraut may be fermented in quart or half-gallon canning jars, but there is a greater chance of spoilage.
After the vegetables are placed in the container and covered with brine, they must be completely submerged in the brine. A heavy plate or glass lid that fit down inside the container can be used. If extra weight is needed, a glass jar(s) filled with water and sealed can be set on top of the plate or lid. The vegetables should be covered by 1 to 2 inches of brine.
Another option for submerging the vegetables in brine is to place on food-grade plastic bag inside another and fill the inside bag with some of the pickling brine. Freezer bags sold for packaging turkeys are the right size for 5-gallon containers. Close the end securely. Then use this filled bag as the weight on top of the vegetables. Filling the bag with brine is a precaution, in case of accidental puncture

Equipment for Fresh-Pack Pickles:
Pickling liquids should be heated in stainless steel, aluminum, glass or unchipped enamelware saucepan. Do not use copper, brass, galvanized or iron utensils. These metals can react with acids or salts and cause undesirable color changes and/or form toxic compounds in the pickles.
For short-term brining or soaking, use crocks, saucepans or bowls made from stoneware, glass, stainless steel, aluminum or unchipped enamelware. Except for the aluminum, the same containers can be used for soaking vegetables in lime. Lime pits the aluminum and can cause an increased level of aluminum in the pickles.

Boiling Water Bath Canner for Processing Pickles:
Use a boiling water bath canner or any deep pot that has a rack on the bottom and a lid. You will need to be able to have 2 inches of boiling water above your jars when you process them.

Canning Jars and Lids: Use pint or quart canning jars specially designed for home canning. Commercial jars such as mayonnaise jars break more easily than standard jars and may not seal. Check all jars carefully for cracks or chips. Wash the jars in hot soapy water and rinse well.
Jars that will be filled with food and then processed for less than 10 minutes need to be sterilized first. To do this, cover the jars with hot water and boil for 10 minutes. Keep the jars hot until filled. Jars that will be filled with food and processed for 10 minutes or longer do not need to be sterilized.
Two-piece metal lids should be treated according to the manufacturer's instructions before use. These lids can be used only once.

PROCESSING AND CANNING
Processing is necessary for all pickles and relishes to destroy yeasts, molds and bacteria that may cause the products to spoil and also to
inactivate enzymes that could affect the color, flavor and texture of the pickled product. As in all canning, a seal is necessary on the jar to prevent other microorganisms from getting in.
Pickles and relishes are high acid products because of the large amount of vinegar added or because of the acid produced during the fermentation. Since they are high acid products, pickles and relishes are processed in a boiling water bath canner.
To Pack the Jars: Follow the directions in the recipe and pack the pickled product into the jar, leaving the appropriate head space (usually ½-inch). Remove any trapped air bubbles by sliding a non-metal spatula around the edge of the jar. Wipe the jar rim clean with a damp cloth. Place the lid (treated according to the manufacturer's instructions) on the jar and screw the screw band down fingertip tight.

For All Pickled Products: Place each jar as it is filled onto a rack in the canner containing simmering water. When canner is filled with jars, add more hot water if necessary to cover jars by at least 1 inch. Cover canner and bring water to a boil. Start counting the processing time when water reaches a boil. Process for the time specified in the recipe.

As an Option: Sometimes processing cucumber pickles in simmering water (180° F) for 30 minutes results in crisper products. To do so, pack the room temperature product into hot sterilized jars. Fill jars with 165° F to 180° F liquid, leaving ½-inch head space. Seal jars and process at 180° F for 30 minutes. Be sure to use a thermometer. This temperature is hard to maintain without one.
Caution! Altitude Adjustments: The processing times given for the pickle products in this publication are for altitudes of 0-1000 feet. If you are processing at an altitude over 1000 feet, see the chart for the correct processing time.

We both love green beans.  May have to plant some next year.  I have had dilly beans that were pretty hot and they were great!  Would like to try to make some of them too.

Well, what I always did...and it works....really! I wrapped 3-4 together in newspaper, then when I had 'em all wrapped in threes and fours, put the pile of all of 'em in a box downstairs or somewhere cool. They'll ripen at different times off of each other, over a couple months period. And they DO taste no different than vine ripened!  OR, do like Leech, fry 'em up! Make green 'mater salsa! Pickled green 'maters!

4-9 x 11 cake pans skinned and 1/4ed  tomatoes
1 container onions  the container i use is the older, taller sherbert containers. cleaned and cut up.
1 container green peppers..........see above
1 1 lb container jalepeno peppers......i use the i cant believe its not butter container.
roughly 1 cup of chopped garlic.i also add some home grown celery.

cook down, as i'm cooking it down i use a strainer to get rid of some of the juice or it takes forever to cook off. the last batch i cooked down just the maters for a bit then added the other ingredients. once its cooked down some i add some salt and pepper and a couple tablespoons of ground cummin!!!!!!

put in jars and seal.

Does look good. I ended up planting 3 clusters of black beauty zucchini and 3 gold clusters. Not sure how many double batches of bread we've made otta tge green ones but them gold ones are non stop. Been grilling most of them,  slicing adding to kaboobs or just grilling for a side, really good. Think I'll do those again next year.

When it comes to salsa we like it chunky,  so I've been slicing everything by hand except for  cloves of garlic and cilantro that run thru the ninja. Its pretty simple recipe,  maters , peppers ( bell, jalapeno,  serrano ) , onion, a clove of garlic per qt, lime juice, cilantro ,salt and pepper to taste.  I have lots of red serranos and jalapenos now, those will probably sweeten it up a smidge.

One year I had many, many green tomatoes on. It was about the 3rd week of September and it was predicted to get down to the upper 20's. I went out about 5 AM with the garden hose and drenched my tomato and pepper plants. There were many of them, 24 plants if I remember right, and the plants were huge, some of them 8 feet tall. I spent about an hour out there spraying. The ice on my tomato cages was over half an inch thick in places but I saved every plant and went on to harvest more tomatoes after the freeze than I had before it.
This year my tomatoes are about done anyway.  :pouty:

Per info I got on here I just put them in a cardboard box with newspaper on the bottom of it.  Then cover with newspaper and they will ripen.  Throw out bad ones as they occur.  Works great.

Yes, I do recall that conversation.
I guess I should have worded the question differently.....

Would they rippen quicker left on the vine, covered so the frost don't wreck them? Or, put them in a box in the basement covered with news paper?
I've always been told that they taste better ripped on the vine. Is there any truth to it?
Title: Re: 2018 gardens

Nope. Ask Barry.....!  He did it! I've always wrapped about 3 together tightly in one sheet of   newspaper, then take all the wrapped piles of 'em and put 'em in a box down in a slighty cool area. Done that for many years.  They ripen great and taste no different, IMO.....make sure none are bruised or have bad spots, though. Plus, they ripen at different rates, when wrapped in different bunches, so I check weekly, had fresh 'mater's in November!  Give it a try!

I've got a lot of 'maters with a little blush on them so I'll pick tonite but the greenies are on their own. Frequently it's slow to freeze on the south facing slope where they're located.

I have done them both ways and I prefer them vine ripened. Either way I don't think you get the full flavor that you get during warmer weather. Either way they are still better than what you can purchase at the store

Remember to cover them tightly....it's the ethylene gas given off by the 'maters that makes them ripen, and you want to keep that from escaping as much as possible. Helps with the taste, too....

Potatoes and carrots still in the ground. Potatoes killed last week with frost. They need a week to allow the skins to set. Carrots get sweeter when they know winter is coming.

Title: Re: 2018 gardens
Post by: Rebel SS on October 10/07/18, 11:03:51 AM
Yes.

Carving pumpkins

In contrast to the flesh-packed pie pumpkin, carving pumpkins, commonly referred to as jack-o'-lantern pumpkins, were designed to make it easier to, well, carve. Jack-o'-lantern pumpkins have a thinner shell and typically have less flesh (or pumpkin guts) on the inside. The flesh is grainier and stringy. The inside of a carving pumpkin tends to contain more water than pie pumpkins.

Jack-o'-lantern pumpkins, also called carving pumpkins, are less fleshy and easier to carve:

Thinner shell
Less flesh/guts inside
Grainier/stringier flesh
Contain more water than pie pumpkins

Pie pumpkins

Pie pumpkins, also called sugar pumpkins, are smaller in shape than the monstrous pumpkins you'd find at your typical pumpkin patch. Pie pumpkins are commonly found in the grocery store in the produce section or at farm stands. This small, round pumpkin is packed full of flesh that makes it a good choice for cooking. The pulp also has a better texture (less grainy) and is sweeter.

Compared to carving pumpkins, pie pumpkins, aka sugar pumpkins, are smaller and easier to bake:

Small and round
Normally found in the grocery store or at farm stands
Full of flesh that's good for cooking
Pulpy, sweeter flesh on the inside
