I like eating bass.  2.5 pounds and smaller are the best.

I have had bass before. there OK at best. just that there are better fish to eat IMO. and I've never been that desperate.

When they are caught in cold water they taste a lot like sunnies.

Nothing wrong with bass at all.  Haven't tried them down here near the cities though.  Warm water but fun to fish.  Since I spend most of my time up north fishing I do keep some bass.  Clear cold lakes in and near the boundary waters are the best.  The best i have had was for shorelunch on Basswood.  The guide was a young kid who wanted to save the walleye's we caught to bring back to the resort but had some smallmouth fillets in his cooler.  They were awesome.  I fished for lake trout on Clearwater Lake off the Gunflint Trail a few times.  I found that there were smallmouth in there and started to fish for them.  They were not big in that lake but plentiful.  Fillet them out and the fillets even had a slight pink color to them and very clean.  Were just as good as walleye.  We have a lot of bass in Minnesota and some smaller one's should be kept at times.  good luck.

Down here in the banana belt, since we have no nice big cool lakes, just rivers, they're good in the Spring, but the waters down here hit upper 60's later in the year, and they seem to get real soft, and do not taste real good then, either. Exceptions: Rockies. I love eatin' 'em. I used to eat em by the bucketful when I was a poor young pupster. Most folk think they're just a nuisance fish, but on an ultralight rig (With a small ice reel) they fight like crazy and are a blast to catch.

Ya Reb,  I never kept rock bass up north.  Probably should have but all that I ever caught were wormy for  some reason.  Way back in time when I was a kid our family camped on a small lake called Indian Lake north of Duluth.  The Cloquet River runs in it.  I was fishing with a bobber and a worm.  Caught a 2 pound rock bass.  My dad weighed it with one of those spring type scales back then.  Threw it back.  Could of been a state record if we knew any better and kept it.  good luck.
