Title: Mille Lacs Indians Saying They Still Have a 61000 Acre Reservation
Post by: Steve-o on February 02/21/20, 12:19:55 PM
In reversal for MN, Ellison and Walz say Mille Lacs band still has 61,000-acre reservation (https://www.twincities.com/2020/02/20/keith-ellison-and-tim-walz-have-sided-with-mille-lacs-indians-saying-they-still-have-a-61000-acre-reservation-thats-a-180-degree-reversal-for-minnesota/)

"If it does, and if it’s in fact 61,000 acres, that could mean that thousands of non-tribal residents and businesses, including the communities of Isle, Wahkon, Vineland and part of Onamia, will be subject to the authority not of local elected officials, but the federal government, which has jurisdiction over such tribal lands, along with tribal authorities."

Might be time for someone to start snooping through Ellison and Walz funding contributions!   :mad1:

Near as I can tell, it was Skip Humphrey that was responsible for the gambling capitulation.

20 years later, state-tribal gaming compacts still produce friction (https://minnlawyer.com/2011/09/21/20-years-later-state-tribal-gaming-compacts-still-produce-friction/)

And I'm not sure which wing nut or nuts were responsible for hanging up those offensive signs around Lake Calhoun.  (Yes, I find those offensive.  But no one seems to care when I'm offended.)

And I'm certainly concerned about labor issues and making sure farmers get a fair shake, but when it comes to figuring out what the DFL party is all about, or the Democratic party at large... (I was going to say something disparaging, but I won't) ... lets just say I disagree with their leadership, strategy, and unilateral policy decisions.

And I can't say that I agree with everything the Repubs say or do, but at least they ain't trying to give the country away.

$#!T, why don't we just sell the Louisiana Purchase back to the French for the original purchase price on the grounds that they got screwed over in the deal.

And H3LL, we might as well sell Alaska back to the Ruskies too.  Certainly there wouldn't be any problems if they had all that land in North America.

And they laughed at Seward??!!  Hmmm...did you know this about Ellison...I'll let you decide, I've got my own opinion....but we sure know how to pick 'em here. Omar...

Ellison graduated in 1981 from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, where he was active in sports and a senator in the student government.
At the age of 19, while attending Wayne State University in Detroit, as a NAACP supporter, Ellison converted from Catholicism to Islam, later giving the following explanation: "I can't claim that I was the most observant Catholic at the time [of my conversion]. I had begun to really look around and ask myself about the social circumstances of the country, issues of justice, issues of change. When I looked at my spiritual life, and I looked at what might inform social change, justice in society ... I found Islam."

This whole gambling thing irritates me.  Maybe we should stop maintaining roads to them.  We need State run Casinos.

This is hitting the nail on the head. I have been saying that for a long time. Especially to people who say they have voted Dem there whole life. And I agree about spending money at the casinos. I won't do it.

Was out one year with Mom and her husband for Easter Dinner at the Anderson House in Wabasha.
They decided to take a drive and  decided to go to Treasure Island for a couple hours. I'd never been in a casino.
Went in with Mom, looked around for a bit, and went back out and sat in the van for an hour until they came out. Not my thing. Not throwing my hard-earned money away.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota's attorney general still insists the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation still exists.

In a legal filing this week, Attorney General Keith Ellison backed the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe's assertion that the band has 61,000 acres across the entire south
shore of Mille Lacs Lake.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Gov. Tim Walz also supports fellow Democrat Ellison's move.

Ellison's statement attempts to reverse more than a century of state policy.

Mille Lacs County officials believe the band has only a few thousand acres.

This contentious issue could have deep and serious implications for people who live around one of Minnesota's destination fishing areas.

Me too.   One of them subjects I’m going stay low on.   Blood pressure goes up to much.

Now that we have so many “gambling addicts” this is an easy fix.  Put a STATE owned/run casino in Bemidji, St. Cloud and the cities.  All profits go to certain departments voted on by the residence and NOT to state general funds.
