The weather is changing for the better, not that it takes much!!  The lakes in the Ely area still have some snow on them, and double layers of ice with about 8-10 inches of water between the two layers.  The only travel possible on many of them are tracked ATV's.
If you are planning to come up and fish perch or crappies, I'd suggest you wait at least another week as the conditions should be much better by then after the water drains off.
I took a ride on Burntside Lake this afternoon with my tracked Ranger, and it wasn't too bad for a short period of time.  Then I hit a large double layer of ice with plenty of water.  When I stepped out to take the picture, I had almost knee high water.
