Metro Area Fishing Report - August 15th, 2014



LAKE MINNETONKA AREA

Muskies have started hitting small bucktails at night on the big flats with green weeds on Lake Minnetonka. Look for walleyes on the 22- to 30-foot weed edges in Brown’s Bay, Wayzata Bay, and Smith Bay on Minnetonka, sunfish in 10 to 12 feet, bass in the milfoil, and crappies on the weedlines in Seton Bay and Black Lake. On Lake Independence, walleyes are hitting fatheads in 12 feet during the evening hours.

NORTHEAST METRO

Crappies and sunfish continue to hit in 10 to 12 feet at Big Marine Lake and White Bear Lake. Bucktails are producing muskies early and late each day in 8 to 15 feet on the St. Croix River and Bald Eagle Lake. Demontreville Lake and Lake Jane are safe bets for pike and bass, while the walleye and sauger bite remains steady on the St. Croix in 15 to 22 feet.

WEST METRO

The bigger catfish have started hitting sucker minnows or bullheads in the deep holes of the Minnesota River. Crappies are hitting in 16 to 18 feet on Lake Bavaria and bass fishing remains strong with plastics or spinnerbaits on the weedlines of Lake Bavaria, Lake Zumbra and Lake Auburn. Sucker minnows are triggering northern pike on Lake Minnewashta in 14 to 18 feet.

LAKE WACONIA

Walleyes continue to hit fatheads or leeches during low-light periods on Kegg’s Reef, North Reef and Anderson’s Reef in 14 to 17 feet. Look for bigger bass to hit plastics on Cemetery Reef and Pillsbury Reef in 14 to 16 feet. Sunfish are hitting small leeches along the south shore and weedlines on most reefs in 12 to 14 feet, while muskie reports have been best with bucktails on the weedlines.

ANNANDALE AREA

Crawlers and fatheads are turning walleyes from the weedlines out to 24 feet at Cedar Lake, Clearwater Lake and Sugar Lake. Hit the 12- to 14-foot weedlines on lakes John, Sylvia, Pleasant and Cedar for crappies and sunfish. Bass are hitting topwater baits, and northern pike can be had with sucker minnows or spoon plugs on the deep weedlines of most lakes. Muskie anglers are seeing a few more fish on Sugar this week.

CHISAGO AREA

Walleye action has been good in the mornings and evenings along Lidberg Point on Green Lake in 17 to 24 feet, Nelson Island on North Center Lake in 14 to 16 feet, Holtz Point on South Center Lake in 18 to 23 feet, and in front of the hospital on South Lindstrom Lake in 20 to 24 feet. Sucker minnows are producing northern pike off Lighthouse Point at Green in 6 to 9 feet. Panfish, bass and northern pike are an easy catch on the weedlines of most lakes.

MONTICELLO AREA


The 11- foot weedline on Eagle Lake is producing sunfish, crappies and walleyes. Small suckers pitched close to shore are turning largemouth bass on Lake Ida - you’ll also find sunfish here in 9 feet. Work the weedlines of Limestone Lake for sunfish, Long Lake for crappies, and Buffalo Lake for panfish, catfish and bass. On the Mississippi River, walleyes and smallmouth bass are hitting between Monticello and Clearwater, while sunfish are being found below the Monticello dam.

Northwest Minnesota Fishing Report - August 15th, 2014

ALEXANDRIA AREA

The 18- to 20-foot weedlines on lakes Ida and Miltona are producing walleyes, as is Lake Reno in 10 to 20 feet. Live bait rigs and leeches or crawlers are best. Crappies are on the deep weedlines on the Le Homme Dieu Chain and Ida. Bass are hitting plastics on the weedlines of most lakes. A few muskies have bit bucktails on Miltona and Lobster Lake.

BATTLE LAKE


Look for walleyes to hit jigs and minnows in 15 to 20 feet or crankbaits in 5 to 10 feet on Otter Tail Lake, West Battle Lake and Rush Lake. Northern pike are taking sucker minnows on the 15- to 25-foot weedlines of Fiske Lake, Otter Tail and Clitherall Lake. Bass fishing remain best in 8 to 12 feet with spinnerbaits at South Turtle Lake, Long Lake and Bass/Elbow Lake. Panfish are going in the 7- to 15-foot weeds of East Battle Lake, Ethel Lake and West Battle. Muskies are hitting Double CowGirls over the 20 to 25-foot cabbage on West Battle.

DETROIT LAKES

Crawlers, leeches, and minnows are turning walleyes in 18 to 20 feet on lakes Sallie, Melissa, Big Detroit, Upper Cormorant, Middle Cormorant and Big Cormorant. Topwater baits and bucktails are turning muskies on the weedlines of Big Detroit and Pelican Lake. Look for sunfish along the weedlines out to 21 feet on Big Detroit, Sour Lake, Siverteen Lake and Floyd Lake.

PARK RAPIDS AREA

Crawlers are producing walleyes in 18 to 24 feet at Potato Lake and during low-light conditions on Fish Hook Lake in 21 to 30 feet. Northern pike remain active, hitting sucker minnows in 14 feet at Big Mantrap Lake. On Two Inlets Lake, crappies are biting on the weedlines during the evenings, and the Crow Wing Chain continues to produce bluegills in 12 to 15 feet. Bucktails have started raising muskies on Big Mantrap.

PERHAM AREA

The 12- to 14-foot weedlines on Rush Lake and Big Pine Lake are worth hitting for panfish. Crankbaits are producing walleyes on the shallow flats and shoreline breaks of Big Pine, while leeches are working for walleyes on the 10- to 20-foot humps of Little Pine Lake.

DULUTH AREA

Crawlers and fatheads are turning walleyes at Island Lake in 20 to 25 feet and Whiteface Lake in 12 to 14 feet. There’s some bluegill action on the weedlines of Fish Lake and Pike Lake, while muskie action has improved on Island and the St. Louis River with double-bladed spinnerbaits. On Lake Superior, the Two Harbors area is producing lake trout and cohos near the surface.

ELY AREA

Walleye action has been inconsistent, but the reefs and shoreline breaks are best with leeches on Burntside Lake, Basswood Lake, Snowbank Lake, and Shagawa Lake. Spoons or heavy jigs are producing lake trout over 40 to 60 feet on Burntside and Snowbank.

LAKE MILLE LACS

East - Smallmouth bass continue to hit rattle baits or plastics on the 8- to 12-foot rocks. Walleye action has been best in the evenings and after dark on the edges of the mud flats in 20 to 28 feet with slip bobbers and leeches. Bigger northern pike have started hitting crankbaits on the north end weedlines and in any southern bay.

West - Walleyes are biting on the tops, edges, or off the mud flats - their location just depends on the day and the evenings have been best with leeches. During the day, bigger walleyes are being caught and anglers are catching some of the nicest perch they have in years on the mud flats. Work the rock points for smallmouth bass in 10 to 20 feet. Muskie action is slow. Pike are hitting crankbaits in the bays.

LAKE OF THE WOODS

Many anglers are heading north to Garden Island, West Bar, or Hay Island in 22 to 24 feet, while others are staying close to the Lighthouse Gap in 14 to 20 feet. Hammered-gold spinner rigs tipped with a leech or crawler are working best. Walleyes are hitting jigs or spinners in 15 to 17 feet during the afternoon and evening hours on the Rainy River. Sturgeon are piled up on the river off current breaks near deep pockets and adjacent streams. At the Northwest Angle, spinners and crawlers are producing walleyes in 22 to 30 feet near Little Oak, Four Blocks or Little Traverse in Ontario. Muskie action is strong in Ontario waters near weedbeds with pink CowGirls during the evenings.

LAKE VERMILION

Walleye fishing continues to be “good to excellent” with Lindy Rigs and a piece of crawler, minnows, or slip bobbers and leeches all producing fish in 18 to 25 feet. Work the transition areas and mid-lake reefs for better numbers. There’s some good-sized perch in the mix and smallmouth bass are an easy catch on the rock points and reefs. Muskie anglers are reporting follows but few hook ups. Northern pike can be had in the shallow, weedy bays.

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

Walleye reports have improved and there has been more keeping-sized fish in the mix with most of them coming from the 6- to 11-foot weedbeds in the northwest corner of the lake on crawlers or leeches. Bigger walleyes continue to be caught on the humps and bars in 18 to 22 feet. Spoons or crankbaits are triggering northern pike on the weed edges along the north and west sides. Look for bigger perch on Hunter’s Hump, Horseshoe Bar, Snaghole Bar, and the south corner of Bena Bar in 20 to 24 feet.

LEECH LAKE

Sucker Bay is producing walleyes on crawlers and spinners or crankbaits in 9 to 12 feet. Sand Point, Cedar Point and the weedlines in Walker Bay are giving up walleyes on leeches or crawlers in 10 to 14 feet. There’s some evening walleye action on the humps in Walker Bay and crankbaits are producing walleyes at night in less than 12 feet from Sand Point to Cedar Point or on the Goose Island Flats. Muskie action has picked up on the rocks and weeds with small bucktails.
