            Young turkey hunters find success

Learn to  Program last weekend enjoyed the highest success rate on record for the program, with five turkeys harvested.

Kevin Feind, coordinator of the program for the Gitchee Gumme Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, reports that 12 hunters, ages 10 to 16, took part this year.

 
Each youth was paired with a mentor and issued a custom engraved slate call on the evening of April 7 in Wascott before heading into the field in the early morning hours of April 8.

In hunting on April 8 and 9, the young hunters took two adult toms and three jakes — an all-time high for the program.

"Everyone had a great time, and mentors loved to share their passion with the young hunters," Feind reported. "Building memories is a huge component of this program. It is far more than the chance to shoot a turkey. It is also about hearing the barred owls, the first morning robin, the hen at 5 feet, the time spent with a new friend, and just getting out in the woods on a beautiful spring morning."
