Cathy and I are pulling out in an hour or so heading to Wisconsin.  We are going to look at 6 parcels of land in the Ladysmith area.  We're on the 10 year plan heading towards retirement, and looking for a new place to call home.  If things go according to plan, this will start out as a camper trailer and eventually we will build on the land when we sell our house here.  We're looking at 10-15 acre parcels that either but up against country or state land, and offer good deer hunting opportunities.  We'd like the focus area to stay somewhere in the 3 to 3.5 hours drive east of the Twin Cities.  Any suggestions on areas to explore would be greatly appreciated.  If the parcel happens to all ready have any improvement (septic, electric, water) that would be even better.

That sounds fun Gopher.  We are thinking of moving to central MN to get closer to our relatives.  We love where we are so it is a hard thing to leave too.  I am not moving until we find a very cool place to move to.  On water too.

Just got back a couple hours ago.  Saw some nice parcles, one really nice cabin, and learned a lot.  We see we will need to be on a paved road.  All the stuff we looked at this weekend was at least 10 miles from concrete. That's fine for a deer shack, but not for an every day residence, at least for us.  We have a more refined list of questions to ask now as we continue our search.  Saw lots of deer, lots of turkeys, and lots of water.  One road we went across to get to the one lot was partially flooded.  When we came back through there, there were 4 woodies happily swimming over the road bed.  Had I had a Rapala on a road, I could have trolled the roadbed.

We went through part of the Chippewa Flowage.  A very impressive chain of lakes and rivers.  Looks like good hunting land.  If we find something down in that general vicinity it should be  great hunting.

I would NEVER route for the Cheezer-Weezers or the Teddy Bears.  As soon as we set up permanent residence, the purple and gold will fly on the front porch.

We're looking at 10-15 acre parcels that either but up against country or state land.

This could be the dream scenario, but I would worry about how many folks are already hunting a piece of public land.  I hunted a spot up north where a guy owned a lot of land that butt up against 120 acres of public land.  There were about a dozen guys in his hunting party.  Two guys hunted his land, and the other ten had permanent stands and shooting lanes cut all over the public land.  I try not to get irked, because we were the interlopers, but they had things locked up pretty tight.  That is all part of the game when you hunt public woods.

We're planning our next reconnaissance trip.  Closer to home this time.  We're looking up around the Pine City area.  Lots of stuff in our price range in that area up to just south of Duluth.  We have no idea where this will take us.  It wouldn't surprise me a bit if we're just out riding around and end up stumbling onto something we like. The stuff we looked at in Cheeseland was just too far from my work.  I'm a Vision Center Manager for Wal-Mart, and I'd prefer to find another Wally World within civilized driving distance that's in need of a Vision Center Manager.  I've got a search going on the 'puter at work to tell me when an opening comes up.  Hope we can make this work as I'm still 10 years from retirement.

Looking more like this will initially start out as a land purchase.  Next step will be a big  travel trailer or a mobile home, and then eventually we'll put up a house.  Looking more like a 10 year plan to get where we want.

Hoping to get another recon trip in before deer season, but with archery open, and the leaves falling, it's time to get out the stick and string.  We hope to get out soon.  Maybe a combo recon trip and "leaf viewing run".   Will most likely be the Pine City area this time.  Hope to make another run to Sisconnie too.

Wife's got a business trip to Ivanhoe, Mn. leaving tomorrow night.  I'm tagging along.  We're back Friday night and hoping to go to Pine City to look at a couple properties on Saturday.  Back to Pine City on Sunday, weather permitting for a day of range time for my herd of newbies.

We just got back from Brookings.  Man, that's a whole lot of flat farm land between here and there.  The fields were very busy, and the farmers are focusing on their soybean crops.  Lord only knows how many millions of dollars of equipment we saw working hard today.  Easy to see how we feed so much of the world when you see so much machinery pulling in the crops.

Hey gopher, I was born in Tyler and had relatives in the Lake Benton, Ivanhoe area for many years. I like that country, lots of deer and pheasants around there.

Yeah, it's a good looking area for sure.  Gotta think the hard working folks out there are easy to get a long with.  We were in Brookings, and that's a nice town.  I like the size of it too.  Cathy's going to be a regional director for a pre scholl food program that is based out of an office in the "business district" of Ivanhoe.
