Two years ago my dad & I invested in 40 acres surrounded by state land near our cabin in Waskish. We built a couple stands the last two years but we hadn't done anything but talk about what we could do to improve the property some day. Well, this past weekend my son and I made the 10 1/2 hour drive to Waskish motivated to build our first food plot. My dad and my hunting buddy made the trip up from Isanti.

We improved a trail from one of our stands to another (made it wide enough for the 4-wheeler) and then we picked the location of our food plot off that trail.

My buddy fired up his brush cutter and my son and I helped pile up the small tree's that he cut. We spent the better part of the next day removing stumps and then my dad tested out his new pull behind tiller. We had to clear out quite a few larger roots while my dad was manning the tiller & 4-wheeler. We ran into a few rocks, a couple too big to move, so we went around them. But after three days of hard work, we planted our clover and are optimistic that it will grow.

I will post follow up photo's over the next couple months.

We also planted five apple tree's in another location and cleared some trees to provide full sunlight. Then we put a seven foot fence around each one.

Wish us luck!

New breaking is a tough job.  Just ask the settlers.  Good luck with your planting.

Good way to start. Be sure to give it enough sun. Clearing or thinning to the north as needed will keep it growing. Good luck.

Thanks ray634! We will make sure to continue clearing and thinning (especially to the north). I appreciate the advise.

Our property is located Southeast of Waskish out by Pine Island State Forest. I've been hunting that state land for over 30 years, my dad is approaching 50 years, and my grandparents were hunting before that (my grandma is 86yrs old and still hunting with us).

Getting a lot of rain by Waskish this past weekend. The clover is growing. Now we need some sunshine for a few days.

Update: Here's a picture of the clover plot from this Saturday (June 30th). I am also sharing a picture of a couple of the apple trees, and a visitor we had by the apple trees.

Looking good there.  I just planted yesterday. I know it's at the tail end to get something established before it freezes but I just had too many other projects to complete before planting got high enough on the list to get done.

I made the trip over from western SD for the Labor Day weekend and the clover plot looks great. We are picking up almost daily activity on the trail cameras. It has us pretty excited!
