It's no wonder he's blue! Do ya suppose if he ate beet pickles he'd turn purple?

Went to check on the garden and found about 25 pounds of ripe tomatoes. Also, funny thing, the cukes that looked
dead and done several weeks ago got a second wind.  New vines and lots of blossoms.  Don't think I ever saw
that before.

Nice batch.  I just got a couple of boxes to put them on in the garage as I pick them.

Our old neighbor used to have a huge garden when they lived here.  I think he used to pick the tomatoes when they were still green.  Then they had no bad spots on them that happens later on.  I think he just put them in the garage on paper in the cardboard flats and kept them cool.  I am tempted to pick all of mine that are so nice and big and see what happens.  Before birds, bugs, etc get them.  Anyone else do this?

I've heard putting 'em in brown paper bags is a good way to get them to ripen. Anybody else ever try this?

yea I remember reb saying he did that towards the end of the year. I pick mine as they are getting ripe....but not completely ripe. set them in a cardboard box in the garage until ripe, then the frig so they done over ripen. some say they lose flavor in the but I claim  :bs:!!!!!!!

I used to blanch them to get the peelings off and then mush them into freezer bags.  Great for soups stews etc.  Now I just put the red tomatoes in a gallon freezer bag and freeze them.  When they start to thaw out in the bag the peels come right off.  Then I throw them in the pot of soup or stew and let them continue the thaw as they cook.  Much easier and works great.  I have done the paper bag thing too Gunner.  I have too many tomatoes to do that now.

I haven't done it for years but just prior to hard killing freeze, I would pull the plants and hang them up side down in the garage.  This extended the ripening time and many of the green ones would ripen.  I suspect this is the similar to putting them in a box in the garage.  My wife just cuts them up a bit and puts them in containers to be frozen.

I usually have extra tomatoes, so I wash them and cut out the stem and bad spots. I'll then carefully run them thru a good processor, but not until there mush. I spray a cake pan with Pam, piur the crushed tomatoes in it. Freeze them then busy them up into smaller chunks, put in plastic bags and back in the freezer. Use them in sketti and different hotdishes and chili.

Darn right! Wrap 3 or so in newspaper and pack loosely in a cardboard box with others....they ripen slow and are delicious! I've eaten ripe ones at Thanksgiving!  :happy1:

One more load.  These plants just don't stop.  Thirty pounds of some of the best of the season.
