Tugboats help cut ice for season's early ships!

Cool Video.....and story!
:happy1:  enjoy....
Ramming through ice at the end of Canadian National Dock 6 in Duluth, Mike Ojard pushed the Helen H. tugboat as far forward as its 3,900-horsepower locomotive engine   :doah: would allow, then backed up, and went at it again.

The tug jolted to each side as it hit the ice, which split easily against its hull.

Darn good video.  I have always been fascinated with tug boats.  Especially the big ocean going ones.

The coast guard is really hurting with the few aging cutters they have left, and the budget cuts whonked the new ones right out. They have finally approved funds for two new ones...

Someone is ordering up boats. There's one hell of a lot of work in the ship yards the next 10 years or so.

The ice in central parts of the Arctic Ocean is on average 8 ft thick.  Nuclear-powered icebreakers can force through this ice at speeds up to 10 knots.  (Or so sez Wikipedia.)

I can't imagine bustin' thru that much ice. 'Course, I could never figger how a huge chunk of solid steel can float, either, regardless of water displacement...
