I seen that the Mn. DNR are putting hundreds of mussels that are native here in some southern Mn. streams in hopes they spread downstream where the streams run into larger streams.  Hope it works out.  good luck.

Here are more details as to what they are up to and why...

We have a bunch of mussels in the lake here.  I've thought about cooking some just to see what they taste like.  Anyone ever try them?  Look like clams.

Don't. Well, maybe some. They filter out a lot of crap in the water, and can be very distasteful, or even inedible. Or unsafe levels of stuff. All that looks like a clam is not.
For more info, talk to Molly Malone. Or, ya could just make buttons outta them, like they did along Lake Pepin area. Sew buttons on yer underwear.

We used to do that when we were kids on vacation at Ottertail.  When we cooked them they got real tough.  I think we over cooked them.

I guessed they don't taste good, since I have never heard of the natives eating them.

Good job, JB!! Danged if it isn't!

Minnesota DNR

Handling and Collecting Mussels

Return live mussels to the water where you found them.
Don't Move a Mussel!
Try not to disturb living mussels. If you move one, replace it on the riverbed or lake bottom in the same place and position as you found it. That will give the animal a fighting chance for continued survival.

In Minnesota, it is illegal to possess any live mussels. Licensed anglers may possess up to 24 whole shells or 48 shell halves from dead mussels that are not endangered or threatened species.
