Vikings to sign Marcus Davenport

Davenport, whom the Saints sacrificed their 2019 first-round pick to get in a trade up in round one, has been a mixed bag at best in five NFL seasons. His best season came in 2021, with 9.0 sacks. Last year, he had only 0.5 in 15 games.

Acquiring Davenport could make the Vikings more willing to part ways with Za'Darius Smith, who has asked to be released.

Yeah, we all now how GMs and salary capologists kick the can down the road to keep good players as long as they can - especially when they think they have an window of opportunity to make a deep playoff run or if they know their jobs are on the line - both were true for Spielman at the end.

So goodness knows how bad the Vikings cap situation is relative to the rest of the league.  But Adofo-Mensah is going to have to clean it up - and maybe he is thinking the sooner the better - even if they have to take a step back for a season.

Lock up Jefferson - their brightest star.  Get rid of the aging veterans.  Let Kirk play the last year of his deal, and maybe try to get a good QB in the draft who can excel while he is still on a rookie deal, and then build the rest of the team using the cash they aren't paying Kirk.

what i'm reading is the Vikes draft #23. thye dont or cant afford to trade draft picks to move up, so they say anyway. and they figure any of the 4 top qb's in the draft will probably be gone by then??

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly made a move involving Kirk Cousins, with NFL Network's Ian Rapoport saying they have working a "cap conversation" to Cousins' contract that will create additional cap space for 2023.

It's a potential indication that Minnesota is not going to give Cousins a contract extension, meaning he could be playing out the final year of his deal with Minnesota without any future guarantees.

They want to change some of his salary to bonuses so the cap isn't so high. He won't be a Viking more than 1 more year.

They'd have to be "guaranteed" bonuses otherwise why would Kapt. K do that?

Sounds like a game of hide-the-sausage or whack-a-mole or some other loophole scheme, but either way, its fun to speculate about the Monopoly money these guys are playing with.

NFL Rumors: Kirk Cousins, Vikings Restructure Contract to Clear $16m in Cap Space

Minnesota entered Tuesday with the worst cap situation in the NFL, sitting $9.4 million over the line heading into 2023, per Spotrac. Cousins had a $36.25 million cap hit in the final year of his current contract.

The 34-year-old signed a one-year extension last season that featured two voidable years in the contract.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Vikings held contract extension talks with Cousins this offseason, but "nothing is imminent." The latest restructuring could indicate the two sides could not agree to a long-term deal.

Bradbury played better last year.  I hope he can stay healthy.

Now all they have to do is find a new defensive starting lineup.  How many starters are they bringing back?  2 or 3?

I guess all things considered...  The way they played the past 3 seasons, they probably shouldn't bring any of them back.   :bonk:

they reworked his contract to give the Vikings 16 million of cap space. Not heard the finer details but they might be paying him yet when he's in the nursing home! :rotflmao:

They just did some creative wording but Kirk is still getting every cent that he was getting before.  Will just be playing with new lesser paid teammates.

Kirk thing is called a cap conversion.  He will still get every cent.  Somehow will make the teams cap situation look better.

The Minnesota Vikings have made arguably their biggest splash yet in free agency, swooping to land coveted cornerback Byron Murphy, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals.

The Vikings have signed Murphy on a 2-year deal worth around $22 million.

More moves expected today.

They called it a Cap Conversion.  He still gets all of his money but it is in a different category for the teams purposes so it doesn't count as much against the cap.

Yeah, the other high-the-sausage thing from that article is that if they don't resign Kirk, then there will be a $28.5 Million in dead cap money.  Kirk will have already gotten everything, but the Vikes will still be paying for it over time ala kick the can down the road.  However, with NFL Monopoly Money - every team does that.
