Title: 1990?? Jiffy Legend 9" auger
Post by: LPS on December 12/05/18, 12:09:31 PM
I bought this Jiffy Legend Auger I am thinking around the early 90's??  It is a 9" which I love and is just the right size for me.  It is a heavy auger and this year as all others started on the second pull.  Put new gas in it and ready to go.  I love the auger except it gets a little heavier each year.  I have never weighed it buy have read they are about 40 lbs.  I can feel it in my hernia  that I got repaired when I retired.  Well I am thinking of getting a new lighter auger.  Unfortunately it will be plastic where mine is all metal except the gas tank.  I have always considered the propane ones.  I use a permanent house and just keep redrilling the holes.  So I guess I need a chipper blade.  My buddy says go electric but they are $675.  That ain't happening.  I may even consider a smaller gas model but still with a 9" auger.  I will then sell mine.  Any thoughts as you are my go to guys at times like this.

Is that a Strikemaster HD?  I will be redrilling holes most of the time.  I may even just get a lighter gas auger.  I see Eskimo does not make a 9".  There out of the picture.

ESKIMO!!!! What else IS there? Go with their HC40 propane 8".......or the 33cc gas Stingray. My stingray was unbeatable. LOVED it.  Very light; I needed that after 3 spinal surgeries. But, I like the propane, no muss, no fuss ones. Terrific customer service, too...Eva will take care of you in a flash.  :happy1:

Love my stingray.  2 friend have the electric strikemasters.  1 is an 8 inch and the other is a 10 inch.  When mine finally dies I WILL be getting an electric.  It's an investment that will pay for itself.

I am looking at getting the Ion x 10". I would get the strikemaster, but i will be reopening holes. Electric is worth the investment i think.

inagree with rebs, ive the eskimo hc40 in 10" genitics ya know, and it is a dream for perms if u dont like ele tric. its geard lower, and anctualy augers, where the others are whats called crap slingers. throwing ice all over the place.

in also have the ion x 10" again, genetics,  love it! but i tell ya, when the ice gets 2.5 to 3 ft thick, it wear me out bad, so much ice displacement compare to the 8, so im in the market for an 8"bit

Keep in mind Jb, that an ION replacement lithium battery runs anywhere from 130-$190....and the tranny gears are nylon. Just not what I care for, but whatever works for ya. Worked on a LOT of augers over the years.

I just ran to Outdoors Again the sporting goods store here.  Looks like Jiffy is the only ones that make a 9".  He has a Jiffy electric there for about $599.  Forgot to see if it has reverse.  It is a 9" or I could keep my flighting and use it with the elec powerhead.  Jiffy powerhead alone is $499.  Then sell my gas powerhead.  ??  Maybe I could get by with an 8" since it would be so easy to redrill with electric.  I let the holes freeze a little smaller of course cuz it is a pain to redrill them now.  Decisions decisions.  A replacement battery is $180.
Title: Re: 1990?? Jiffy Legend 9" auger
Post by: Rebel SS on December 12/05/18, 02:40:35 PM
That DOES have a reverse, Barry.  8" redrill easier than 9", and wiyth levtric saving on juice is important. An 8"hole is gonna get yer fish out, IMO 1" makes little difference.

I hear ya Rebs and Boar.  I do catch some big sturgys here so don't want to be unhappy if I get the Granddaddy of them all.  I know 8 would probably do but I am so used to 9.  It seems the perfect size to me.  Now i need to get the weight on it.  It does have a 2 year warranty on it.

Yup Barry, it's a Strike Master..... I'm a run and gunn'er. I have a flip over that I use more as a sled than a fish house. I drill a ton of holes in a short period of time, and move around a lot.

With that said, they don't work well for redrilling holes and they don't have a 9 inch.

That's why I really can't help.
If you wanted a lightweight auger to drill a bunch of holes, fast, I would recommend a Lazer.
For the fish house folks, Boar or G would know better.

I did not know that Rebs about the gears. The only reason I am leaning towards the ion is for reopening holes in the fish house. The strikemaster lazer sucks for reopening holes. I hear you to Boar, the thicker the ice gets the more torque you get out of the 10". Gas or electric. I just like the 10" in the permy because it gives more room for the transducer in the hole. I wish strikemaster made a twin blade that is good at reopening holes.

I am charging it now and there is not one there.  You are right Dotch.  BUT on the Jiffy site it says "integrated USB charging port".  Either it is an older or newer model year than mine.

It says on the Jiffy site it says it has an 'integrated charging port"  On one of their sites I just looked at it does say to charge phones etc.  I called them but they close at 3 so I left an email to them.  Darn. :angry2:  It is on the Cabelas site that explains the USB as for charging phones and other small electronic devices.

You 2 got me goin, so I did some looking earlier this am & didn't find much. So I googled it, "usb port on jiffy propane auger", &  it led me to "jiffyonice.com/Service-Support". Is it a E6 Lightning, Model 56? If it is there was 1 of those at the top of the search page that had integrated USB port highlighted. That led me to a spot where you could sign in & email the company directly. Just a thought.

:rotflmao: :rotflmao:  You guys are great!  I pushed and felt around for a secret opening and pushed on labels in case they covered it up and I don't see it anywhere.  I went to their facebook page and made a comment about the USB port and it disappeared as a we will review your comment and it never came back up.  SO I mentioned it on a post below that and it is still there.  I did leave a message at the Jiffy headquarters.  Will see if they respond to me.  I also left an email to them.  BUT I got the fishhouse out yesterday and what a smooth auger.  I couldn't be more happy with it.  It turns slower than a gas one and cuts great.  Then I lowered it down a little and hit the reverse and it cleaned the ice out of the hole great!!!  That worked  better than I thought it would.  I love it.  Wish it had a USB Port..    :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :happy1: :happy1:

As long as you're OK with it. :happy1: Just curious, is it the E6 Lightning, model 56 I mentioned?  That's about the only 1 in their line up that had all  the features you talked about.  Kinda funny that they'd have the USB port in the discription & there wasn't 1 there. :bonk: Is it a new model? Nobody else has bought 1 & brought this to their attention?

Yup that's the one Gunner.  I think this is the first year of them.  That made me a little nervous but seems like a great auger other than our USB problem.  Puzzles me too as to why they use it as a selling point even though it is not there.  Curios to talk to them and hear the excuse.

Ok I am impressed.  I had an email already this morning from Jiffy.  They disabled the USB on the earlier models but are waiting for the new stock that should have the USB on them and they will send me one of them when they get them.  I asked for a powerhead cover and a hat instead.  We will see.  SO I looked and yes on the powerhead I can see a rubber plug that must be covering up the USB.  Why would it be on the powerhead???  So you have to have the auger in the house to use the USB???  Oh well at least we know the skinny on this.

 Good to hear that they were quick to respond. :happy1: I'd probably  took 'em up on their offer of a new powerhead just in case I'd ever want to be able to use it. In your case, where almost all of your use will be in your wheelhouse that's usually not very far from where you live, maybe not. Especially the way it's designed so you need the auger inside the house to use the USB. New model & probably not that many in service yet, I'd been more than a little suspicous  if they didn't get back to you pretty quick.
