I did & IMO it's because a lot of different kinds of packaging can be made out of it, & it's CHEAP. Everything from bubble wrap & shopping bags to cell phones, computer moniters/tvs, & cars.
-
Plus it can be recycled easily and indefinitely. :coffee:
-
well one would think that if the recycling and pollution of these plastics is an issue our fearless leaders would do something regarding this.
and boar the show was regarding all the pollution and trash, not why its getting pushed on us.
i demand paper bags when i go to the grocery store.
-
Plus it can be recycled easily and indefinitely. :coffee:
not really............china takes most of our plastic, and thanks to out POTUS there telling us to stick it. theres been lotz of news coverage over this lately.
-
Whoever invented those stupid flimsy plastic ones that everything falls out of, should be kicked in the azz. I miss the stand-alone brown paper bags. But, there goes another tree....

But, it's SOLD to them, then we get rid of it....and buy it back in everything that says MADE IN HONG KONG on it.
-
trees are a renewable resource and paper bags are way more easily recycled!!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:
-
Nuh uh!!! Try a bag over yer head!!! :mooning: :rotflmao:

Not really a new story to me, especially the shopping bag & plastic bottle thing. Been around for quite a while, seen many stories about the # of just bottled water bottles that are just thrown away every year. :pouty: It's staggering, enough to go around the planet a time or 2.
-
i demand paper bags when i go to the grocery store.
When the grocery bagger asks me, "Is plastic ok?" I say no. I'm surprised at how long it takes some of them to process the response.

Ya, Wally world asks that....why?! They don't even HAVE paper bags....!!!
'Course, I don't expect much outta Wally world anyway.... no Einstein's in there. :doofus:
-
We go to a store(Aldi's) where you bring your own bags, ours are cloth, & you bag your own groceries, quite often. We don't have 1 here but there's 1 in Mason City, Austin & Grand Rapids. Is Trader Joe's the same way, Reb? I know they're owned by the same German company.
-
Was just at TJ's on Wednesday......they just bagged my stuff up in good ol' paper bags, with a nice Christmas theme and their logo on it, Gunner...
-
I carry cloth bags too... leaning toward using paper more too when I have too..
-
 :happy1: Thought they were pretty much the same , evidently not. Think they handle a little different stuff too, from what you've said.
-
Who can forget the paper grocery bags from Red Owl with the big owl on 'em?

super value too

Everything around here plastic or paper end up in the landfill so it makes no difference what we use. Nothing biodegrades in landfills as they are made that way. Dig one up 50 years later and you can still read the newspapers. I go plastic as it actually makes a smaller ball when wadded up than a paper bag will.

They put plastic in yer landfill?

   nothing biodegrades???????????? paper breaks down, burns????
-
I think the idea is ... nothing (or not much) biodegrades (rapidly) in landfills.
I remember seeing that news article - it might have even been 60 Minutes back in the day - where they dug down into the landfill to show that trash wasn't breaking down. I also remember them referencing the 50 year old news paper. I think that story went on to propose an alternative method of landfill that promoted more composting, but obviously that never caught on.
It was probably more expensive, took more land area, and was probably more stinky. Nobody wants that in their back yard.
-
down this way............most that is seperated and sent to garbage burners for sources of electricity. great river in Elk River, and red wing to think of 2 places.
-
Modern landfills have a liner on the bottom so nothing leeches out except where they may want it to go to a lagoon through pipes. After that section is filled they cover the top with a foot or two of fill on top of the garbage. Then they put either an astro turf or seed with real grasses. They don't want rain water to get in. SO nothing biodegrades in there. There is not enough oxygen to promote it. They do also have methane pipes burning off any gasses that may occur.
There are appx 7 kinds of plastic bottles. They must be separated into their type before baling it up. Very time consuming and labor intensive to separate those bottles. Then you fill a semi and still don't have much weight and the market for them is not good. SO it all ends up baled and just sitting in warehouses. Then lots of it gets broken up and sent back to landfills. The prices on much of the recyclables is so bad that lots of the biggest recyclers in the US are not even running. Yup composting didn't work as good as they thought neither.

Several other countries have moved to accepting plastic for payment of things like subway tickets and vending machines. Here's a link to an article on that topic: https://www.thecivilengineer.org/news-center/latest-news/item/1599-in-beijing-plastic-bottles-can-pay-for-your-subway-ticket

so my point to this is why are they not going away with plastic bags? plastic bottles if its such a pain in the azz to deal with it. :doah: :doah: :doah:

If you want to see the 60 Minutes episode from last night (Dec. 16, 2018) on the Plastic Plague, the first part of the episode is on Opioids. The Plastic Plague starts around 13:40.

Here in the #1 perfect city, all plastic must be separated, labels off, and put in weekly recycle bins to go to the "Waste to energy" facility here in town. My garbage company states cardboards, paper, and plastic have to be separated. Yet, I watch the trucks pick up all three and dump them in one truck...

Because they don't want to havta raise their prices & lose business. There are some eco friendly businesses out there & just about all have considerably higher prices. I think the new Mercedes Benz plant down in Geaorgia, near Atlanta, was acually built on an old landfill & they've found a way to capture the methane coming off it & at least partially power/heat that plant. Bet  they got a LOT of tax breaks from city, county, & state to build it there too. Until there's a government mandate that everybody has to do it they won't IMO. :bonk: Even then, they probably just close shop & move to another country where it's not required.
-
i'll never ever be convinced retailers dont adjust there product prices to accomodate for price increases in there bags, be it paper or plastic. and i'd bet if plastic is cheaper...they didnt lower there prices!!!! just sayin!!!!
-
I didn't get to watch that 60 Minutes thing cuz I was in football mode. Thanks for posting it. I will watch it.

A lot of towns have gotten so fussy about the recycling that a lot of the people stop doing it. Besides it easier to throw everything in 1 bag & they don't care or think about the consequences.
-
That's what I see here. They won't take leaves, or branches or twigs.....have to drive to the wood dump site and pay $15 for a pickup or carload load of wood, branches, etc....and we're a national "Tree City". Always lots of small limbs and twigs everywhere, with all the trees here. St. Paul and Mpls have you set out tree limbs on the curb and they pick up when they can. Grass and leaves have to go to the mulch dump here, which is free. But, they then sell mulch back to you.....I see a lot of the neighbors dump all that in the bottom of their garbage cans. I can see why....
-
And a TV is about $25 to get rid of but once it is broken up it is garbage. :sleazy:
Used to see a lot of people do that.
-
That's why the ditches around here in the country have old 'fridges and freezers tossed in 'em. Cost me a small fortune to get rid of the old TV's, computer monitors, old freezers and 'fridge and stove from my Mom's house.
-
$7 here for fridges, stoves anything..

Ever try to turn an old upright vacuum into garbage? Whew!!! :whistling: :rotflmao:

$15 for 'fridge or small air conditioner, etc., and other electronics $ by the pound. Mattresses and box springs are $16 EACH. :doah: Gotta pay for the glitz and sparkle.

I guess it pays to live in a poor county...
-
Just watched the whole 60 Minutes show. Thanks Outdoor Junkie. And this whole plastic bag and straw thing is sweet but a non issue to me. As long as it gets to an approved disposal facility in your area so it doesn't get into rivers and flow anywhere we will be ok.
-

Cohassett has a salvge yard that'll take just about anything that has some metal in it, for free. There's also a county transfer station just north of town that takes computer monitors/ tvs, lithium batteries, old oil, & just about everything else for free, if it's recyclable. You can buy punch cards from local businesses that they use, if there's a charge. It was just $2 for an old printer we had that we took in this fall. Our co-op in Big Fork has a recycling program for appliances as well. It's $25 to bring it in but they then issue you a rebate check that more than covers that cost.
-
I gotta move.

:happy1: :happy1: havent had to go to Cohasset or big fork, but use that punch card system for the "dump" Gunner speaks of. occasionally i will bring stuff from home there cause its simply easier.
-
yea forgot about the metal being free, thanks Gunner!! that sounds like our transfer station...

I gotta move.

Got to agree,57, the little segment on the island of Midway proved that. Out in the middle of nowhere, no people livin anywhere near there, yet, they're havin to go out everyday & clean up the beaches. It showed some of the albatrosses that had died & the only thing left was the garbage they ate & had killed them
-
It is hard to believe how careless people can be. How about that river full of trash and the girl just swished the garbage away so she could get to the water. Yuck...

We don't go to the dump on the north end of the lake by you much, glenn, unless we have a trailer load. About every 2 weeks we have enough recyclabes, usually plastic, to stop at the Cohassett 1 anyway. Besides we're in to GR just about every week anyway.
-
Yea we might go once maybe twice a year. Mom does the road ditch cleanup so she brings the stuff there.
-
Yeah Reb, it's some sort of national refuge. Shouda seem 'em they were everywhere. Kinda looked like yours, only weren't quite that ugly. :happy1: ;) :rotflmao: We try to help the lake assoc. with their ditch clean up on CR 4 & 35 every year too, if we can. It's ~ 3 miles on each end but somebody comes & picks that up.
