It looks to me like the Gophers game today is on the Pac - 12 channel. SO I don't think it is gonna be on unless you get one of the alternative stations. Fubo or Sling TV or something like them. I have already done the free trials with them to get games in the past and I am not joining them.
-
Holy crap LPS, I just googled the gophers. They beat Colorado 30-0. I thought they didn't have a snowballs chance in hell against Colorado??? :happy1:
-
If you look at the box score, doesn't look like Colorado even had 80 yards of offense.
-
Unreal. Go Gophers.
-
Musta been a Rocky Mountain High going on.
Sports girl just said Gophers are 2-1. I know they got ran over by OSU but who else did they play?
-
They sqeeked buy Miami of Ohio last week.
-
We'll find out where they're REALLY @ on 11/13! :sleazy: :nerd: :nerd:  ;)
-
WOW! I only had a chance to listen to the game at the beginning of the 1st quarter when it was a back and forth field position game. I was worried that it would be tight.
Lost track over the weekend, so I'm shocked now to see the drubbing. Yes, go Gophers!
-

Well, given their cake schedule other than Penn St., their record should be fattened up feasting on The Little Sisters of the Poor by then! :rotflmao: They did beat two worthy opponents although IN has turned out to be a flash in the pan after some on BTN were claiming they'd contend for the Big Ten East title earlier. Ya, right.
-
Bad loss to Bowling Green for our favorite rodent-named football team.
I didn't hear any of the post-game explanations. Anyone hear what P.J. said about the loss?
-
This one's on him...bla, bla, bla. Sounded like a certain governor I know... :whistling:
Just win baby. Ugly, pretty, blowout, scrape by. Doesn't matter.
Horrid decision going for it on 4th down & short deep in their own end in the 1st half, then give them points when you don't make it. Set the tone for the rest of the game. Were they looking past BG to Purdue? Better hope so cuz they'll be watching bowl games on TV again otherwise. Can't lose to the schlep teams like that, at home, in a homecoming game. Just can't. It looked looked like Punky Brewster was back coaching again.
I think PJ can quit worrying about USC wanting him after that loss. Besides, Urban Liar & the guy from Penn St. were already ahead of him in line.
-
There are 50 guys ahead of him for any decent jobs. He better concentrate on hanging onto what he has instead of leaking his name to every opening.
-
Since it's still raining out and pretty soggy out there, tuned into the gopher game.
Drives me nuts, every offensive play the QB looks to the sidelines, twice, :pouty:. What's up with that :doofus: :doofus:
-
Checking to see if PJ is still his coach.
-

:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: good one!!👍
-
Not the gophers but while cooking up deer camp meals watching Arkansas and Ole Miss play. What a shootout. 8 minutes left yet it's 45-38 and a combined 1043 yards in offense.
-
Looks like gunners Iowa Hawkeyes are getting manhandled by Penn State :sleazy: :rotflmao:
-
Ferentz better have a good supply of chewing gum...

'Spose PJ's crew hasn't EVER won a game when they're down by 2 TD's early , so you probably change the channel. :doah: :bonk: :sleazy: :nerd: :nerd: :tut: :mooning: GO HAWKS, 6-0 baby!! :cheerleader: :party3:
-
:sleazy: :rotflmao: was a good game though!! :happy1: good to see the neighor state win.
Just watched Bama get beat. That was a hell of a football game.
-
 :bonk: Wish I'd watched it as I'm NOT much of a Alabama/Nick Saban fan. I was busy cheering for the SF Giants as I'm not big on LADs either but it didn't help. The OK/TX & Ark/ Ole Miss games were both real good too. All the Penn St penalties the crowd help cause & the 2 INT's he had never let the #2 QB get any rhythm which was the difference in the 2nd 1/2 IMO. :happy1:
-

is there anyone you DO like!!!!!!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :mooning: :pouty:
-
:pouty: :tut: Saban wins too much so he must be cheatin  & the Dodger's are the the NYYs of the NL. They can buy their titles because they have soo much $. Yeah, I like anybody who's playing these guys & teams like the Cowboys, Ohio St, & Michigan. :moon:
-
Gophers hang on to win after darn near crapping the bed in the 2nd half. D steps up after the offense was playing just not to lose. Williams looks like their guy for now at RB. Interesting to see how badly IA destroys Purdue now... :coffee:
-
No kidding! Good for the Gophers!!! Too bad I missed it.
-
Hawkeyes are in trouble in the 4th qtr. down 17-7. Oops! Make that 24-7...
In the meantime some of us Gopher fans are enjoying the MN-NE rivalry that's developed:
-
Purdue outplayed 'em on both sides of the ball. :pouty: They shouldn't been ranked #2 anyway IMO, HC said so too!
-
I was a little surprised but I also know that Purdue got one of their main offensive weapons back who was absent when the Gophers beat them last week. I agree, the #2 ranking was a little over the top when one looks at the game against Penn St. If Penn St.'s QB hadn't been out with an injury in the 2nd half, it very well could've been a different outcome. The 1st half was mostly Penn St. last week.
-
watching the gophers, they showed a stat where the gopher offense line outweigh the ravens and vikings offensive line!!!!!1 :rotflmao: :rotflmao: and there up 17-3. :happy1: :happy1:
-
i finished watching the game while wining and dining my b-day girl......... :sleazy: watching those running backs for the gophers is crazy.......i dont know how the gophers get these running backs year in and year out but damn they get some good ones.
there defense is getting pretty good to!!!!!! :happy1:
-
Their offensive line has been together for a long time!
-
The big games are coming. Especially Iowa for Floyd of Rosedale. Then there's the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe with Wisconsin. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:
-
Where are the Gophers? Sucking hind tit so far...
-
Dont Gophers hibernate this time of year? 🤭
-
Looks like the same team & game plan they used against Bowling Green.
-
💩 the bed again
-
Mediocre team in a bad division gets enough wins to be bowl eligible (you really, really need to be bad to not get a bowl invite.) They are what they have always been.
They will beat either Wisconsin or Iowa and everybody will begin the lovefest for Mr. Elite again.
-
Missed the 2 INT's & it was 14-0 when I turned it on. It looked like the Illini's D had a good game but even 'Bama found out how hard it is to win if you can't run the ball very well yday. :tut: Except they got lucky!! :pouty:
-
I would say 90% of Alabama's 2nd stringers would be starters at the U. Bemidji State is closer to being like the Gophers than the Gophers are to being on the same plane as Alabama.
Mr. Row the Boat has done a good job at keeping kids in school and out of jail and if thats what he is being paid to do then he is earning his check. If he is being paid to build a top 3 Big 10 program he is failing as he isn't close.
-
By the way Gunner, iffin your rootin for the Hawkeyes :tut: today, you best be south of the border already. :tut: :mooning: :moon: :rotflmao:
-
man watching the gophers is frustrating. there clock management at the end of the first half is horrible, bet they wasted a full minute looking at the sideline before snapping the ball!!!! :doofus:........and morgan couldnt complete a pass if there werent any defenders on the field!!!!!!!! :doah:
-
Game over? How did it go?
-
Game over? How did it go?
typical gopher/ Vikings fashion.

Just remember, revenge is a dish best served cold... ;)
-
Ya the Gophers and Vikes seem to use the same coaching/playbook philosophy. Although a buddy of mine told me that the Gophers O line weighs more than the Vikes O line. SO they can run the ball better.
-
Just remember, revenge is a dish best served cold... ;)

I noticed some issues managing the play clock yday for your guys, been like that all year? Morgan wasn't on his game throwin the ball yday but neither were the guys he was throwing too IMO.
-
Yup, clock management has been an ongoing issue under PJ. The constant dicking around they do prior to every snap doesn't help matters. Might drive defenses nuts occasionally but rarely draws them offside. Runs clock which is good when you're ahead. When you get behind and the play gets changed last second as appears is happening, you wind up with untimely delay of game penalties. Absolute effing drive killers. Morgan's talents have gone the wrong direction. He seems increasingly more indecisive under pressure and has happy feet, something he didn't have so much two years ago. He doesn't have the talent of a Bateman or Johnson to throw to either and it shows. Throw the ball anywhere close to those guys and they'd frequently catch it. Loved the TE touchdown play however. Maybe something they need to capitalize on more often. Despite getting lit up statistically, IA found a way to win. If the Gophers ever stay healthy on offense, become more creative in play calling in addition to learning clock management, they could be something. As it is, they're just also rans good enough to go to a toilet bowl.
-
Yes that constant looking over at the babysitter drives me crazy. He will end up like Cousins and won't be able to read a defense on his own.
-

he football career is over when he's done with college i'd say!!!!!!!!
-
This new transfer portal will be interesting. Be fun to see if Mr. Row the Boat can sell his BS or if he loses more than he gets.
-
Yeah, the Gophs have had several coaches who "almost made them good" (or is it "made them almost good"). Either way, it hasn't worked out yet.
It might have been the biggest mistake in the history of college football to fire Glenn Mason for Tim Bruster. And they kept "Basement Bru" for 4 years. :doah:  :censored:
It would have been good to see what Jerry Kill could have built. I think he was on the right track until health issues derailed his progress.
I think it remains to be seen which programs and colleges will continue to thrive with the transfer portal.
The transfer portal and play-off expansion to 12 or 16 teams *might* be good for college football, but it will suck for the Gophers. If a good player isn't already on one of the perennial to top 20 teams, they will make frequent use of the transfer portal to get on one of the teams that has a chance to make the play offs. The rich will get richer.
My prediction is P.J. will lose more than he gets. I wish him the best, but he is going to have to recruit and coach is a- :moon: off if he wants to consistently get his program in the top 20.
-
I see no way, none, zip, nada that he can get them to the top 20 on a consistent basis. He will get them there for a week every couple of years but he won't keep them there.
Here is something that really tweaks me. When they went to this play-off crap they took all the mystic away from the big bowl games on News Years Day. It use to be it was a big deal, a big honor to make the Rose Bowl. Not anymore. The Rose many years is just another crap above average bowl game. Just a couple steps above the Midas Bowl, Idaho Potato Bowl, Sun Bowl. All the Row The Boat guys pump their chest over this crapty bowl game and PJ gets his bowl bonus. How about this PJ, how about you give money back when you are one of about 20 DI teams that don't make a bowl game. It's all smoke & mirrors with this guy, EXCEPT for the fact he keeps the kids out of trouble and off the police blotters for the most part.
Rant over ;)
-
Gophers success has basically depended on getting Floyd of Rosedale, Paul Bunyan's Axe and the Little brown Jug.
They have let Iowa keep Floyd for 7 straight years.
They have lost the Axe to Wisconsin 12 straight times.
The Gophers have only beaten Michigan 3 times since 1969.
Michigan leads the series, 76–25–3.
Gopher football is a disaster and has been for quite a while. And changing coaches every few years has made no difference.
-
Yeah, they have been way behind the power curve for a long time.
When the other Big Ten schools were MASSIVELY investing in their athletic facilities and increasing their coaches salaries, the University of the State of Education was dragging their feet.
Back in the day... How can we justify paying the head football coach $1,000,000 when the president of the university only makes $250,000?
This is why we can't have winning football teams at the University of Minnesota.
Will they ever catch up? I have my doubts.
-
Beating teams like Indiana, Rutgers, Purdue, Maryland & Illinois are called "Big Wins." That should tell you all you need to know about Gopher football.
-
Hey, that's five one-game seasons where they went 1-0. In P.J.'s vernacular, they were champions that week.
-
Just flipped on Alabama 24 vs Arkansas 14 and looked at the scroll on the bottom of the screen. I was looking in the results for the top 25 teams to see how Smoke & Mirrors did this week. I didn't see anything. Did I miss it or did they not play this week?
-
Just googled it, there up 28-7 with 3 minutes left in 3rd quarter.
It's off to the rose bowl. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
-
They played altho it was such a nice day, I didn't tune it in until just a few minutes ago. It was on one of the BTN alternate channels, 5441 on Dish. A win over another crippled also ran. Next week counts again.
-
'Bama vs Arkansas was a good game. Back & forth. Glad PJ was able to beat Indiana. Give that boy another contract extension!!!!
-
wisc get a player booted for targeting on the first play from scrimmage. now the gophers are shooting themselves in the foot with penalties on defense after good defensive plays!!!!!
-
Pick 6 for Buckey and only getting 2 field goals will kill the rodents.
-
interesting game........defense came to play........ 13-13!!!
-
Conservative play calling all the sudden, settling for a field goal. 23-13, 6 minutes left. Plenty of time to get beat... :bonk:

Awww, poor Bucky lost the axe. Oh well, at least Paul Chryst still looks like my C-squad football coach...🤡🏈
-
Awesome win Gophers. To bad Nebraska caved in yesterday. Otherwise the Gophers would be going to Indianapolis next Saturday to play Michigan and not Iowa.
Storming the field and playing the Badger song "Jump Around" just made it even better. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:
Score this week......Minnesota 2 Wisconsin 0    :wowza: :wowza:
-
A big win for PJ's crew. :happy1:  The INT early in the 2nd 1/2 yday reminded me a lot of the blocked punt on Friday as they both were by far the biggest play of the game for the winning team.

Frannie is ALWAYS animated!! ;)  Got it down to 2 pts but couldn't get it any closer. The way the 1st half was I thought they might lose big. So how's your new bball coach lookin?

Me too....I've watched as many as I can. That Samedy is the best hitter in the country. Wow can she spike the ball. :happy1: :happy1:

Yeah, it's only conference championship games being played today so there's only 2 BIG 10 teams playin. :whistling: ;)

I saw that Iowa made a pretty good 2nd half run at the Boilers. Impressive with Iowa's big gun being sidelined for this game. Interesting to see what happens on Jan. 27th when Purdue visits Carver. Frannie has assumed the mantle from Bobby Knight as most fun coach to watch on the sidelines. Jury's still out if he can throw a chair tho... :coffee:
I like what I'm seeing so far of Ben Johnson but the bar is set pretty low. Still, to be unbeaten playing with a team comprised of spare and used parts one has to be satisfied. They play hard, can shoot and they play D but lack depth and any real presence under the basket. They could surprise or at least scare someone if they're sleeping and taking them lightly on the wrong night. He's after the MN talent and who knows what'll happen in a few years if they keep this transfer portal stuff up.
-

Same here. With Bally Sports and other such nonsense messing up Gophers hockey, we've watched a lot of Gopher women's volleyball. Samedy is a hitting machine! Great fun to watch her. :happy1:
-
Undefeated? Really? Goes to show how much attention I pay to 'em. Big 10 wrecked Gopher Hockey for me so I pretty much ignore them now. You have to stumble into them playing at 2:30 on some weird ass channel. Good thing about living up here on the border now I have a better chance of of watching UMD or the US branch (North Dakota) of the Canadian league. :rotflmao: Fighting Suzie's I think they are known as.
-

Hawks lost it on the 3 pt line & the defensive boards according to the box score.
-
Sounds about right. Caught mainly the 1st half. They couldn't hit a 3 to save their souls & Purdue's big man was a load. Then I had to catch up on my Gunsmoke reruns! 😴
-
Kept it close 'til about midway through the 3rd qtr yday but then the dam broke. The blocked punt was the last straw for me. :pouty:
-
Once it was 14-3 it was over. I switched to something. Iowa doesn't have the offense to get into a shootout.
-
 They're Special Teams & Defense have scored a lot this season too & were the main reason for the came back, it was 21-9, to beat Nebraska.
-
how bout dat......them gophers are rowing the boat to the Guaranteed Rate bowl on dec 28th against west virginia!!!!! :azn:
-
Yep and DB will be happy to know that Gopher men's BB is 7-0 after beating Mississippi St. on the road this afternoon. Much more entertaining than watching the Vikings choke, again! 🙄
-
Glad to hear the basketballers are doing well. I'm not a basketball guy on any level so I don't watch them. Would be fun to see them do well the year after lil Ricky left.
-

Hawks get to play against Mark Stoop's team, Kentucky, on New Years Day. He, like both of his brothers, played for Hayden Fry.

Gophers Volleyball in the NCAA tournament playing Baylor today at 2:00 on ESPNU.
-
Watched a little of it yday & I see where 6 BIG 10 teams made the tournament!
-
Gophers beat Baylor.....on to the Elite 8. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:
-
 Anybody see the shot that Ron Harper Jr made to beat Purdue last night? Almost 1/2 court, 1st time in school history that they beat a #1 ranked team at any sport.
-
Dagnabbit I missed that along with IA getting trounced by IA St. :sleazy: Brockington must be an animal & Kalscheur started at one of the guard positions I see. The wife was watching the Vikings who came close to crapping their pants.
-
:tut: I was watching the Vikes too. One of Gopher men's teams MIGHT have a chance at beating the Hawks at something this year yet. :nerd: ;)
-
Well maybe, if IA has a hockey team or something... :rotflmao:
-
Hockey in Mn is a lot like wrestling in Ia IMO.
-
Gopher men's BB upsets mighty Michigan at Crisler Arena. Say what?!?!?
-
 Seen that yday so I had to check the boxscore. Not much difference, that I seen, except from the 3 pt line.
-
I'd forgotten they were playing when the Mrs. tuned it in while I was slaving away in the kitchen.Totally unexpected but an impressive win on the road over the bluebloods by a team of misfits.
-
When Ben Johnson was hired, I'd hoped The U would have tried harder to get a bigger "Named" coach. But now I like the hire for 3 reasons.
Richard Pitino was the biggest named up-and-coming coach The U was willing to pay - AND who was also willing to come to the school. Despite what Richard continued to say, does anyone really believe that he wasn't going to jump to the first blue-blood school that called if he could ever figure out how to turn the Gophers program around? (How'd that work our for Richard? :doah:) I'm glad The U didn't go that route again.
After I heard Ben Johnson's first interviews, I was very impressed. He doesn't have a track record as a winning head coach, but he struck me as an leader I would go to war with. I'll bet that plays very well in living rooms when he is recruiting and I predict he will have continued success in recruiting home-grown talent as well as good out-state players. He won't get 'em all, but he will do better that Richard. :happy1:
I know it is a small sample size, but he has that team playing. Health is the pivotal issue on a team without much depth, but if they stay healthy, I like their chances to be over-achievers this season.
-
Enjoyed your assessment Steve-O. Good friend of mine is a UNI alum/basketball fan so asked him about his thoughts. He was impressed with the guy, said he recruited very well for them as they had some good years with those players.
Be interesting to see if they have a letdown tonite at the Barn against Texas A&M-CC. They're 9-1 so not to be taken lightly coming off a big win on the road.
-
Gophers on TV tonight at 9:15 against West Virginia in the GUARANTEED RATE BOWL in Phoenix. Game will be on ESPN. Will be a Midnight or later finish.
-
Mighty West Virginia? Real feather in the hat of Mr. Elite.
-
Most of these bowls are....."Never heard of it." The only ones that count are the 2 playoff games on Friday. That's why I can't believe the NCAA is dragging their feet in expanding the playoffs for more teams.
-
i'll watch the gophers and Mr. Elite!!!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
and yea there are alot of them, but its extra cash for the schools and maybe helps recruiting?????
-
9:15 pm and that is Central time. WTF!! Won't get much for their advertising dollars during that game.
-

We were just talking about that this morning, making the major bowl games relevant again as part of a playoff system, rather than the subjective selection method being used now. Fine to have all these "also ran" bowl games but other than generate revenue and to a lesser extent, help recruiting potentially, not sure what the point is.
-
I'm guessing by the time they fly 1/2 the school to Arizona and put them up there isn't much left. Deduct the Big 10's share and Mr. Elites bogus bonus share.
-

Crazy, the game on ESPN before the gopher game was cancelled 2 hours before kickoff. Think that's like 5 bowl games already.
-
I heard the Gopher's took a page out of the '86 Bears playbook last night & had their version of "The Fridge" play RB.
-

Than guy makes the fridge look small. He's more "walk in cooler". Trimmed down this year... a mere 378
-

yep, that was neat to see. crazier 2 pt conversion right after that too!!!!!!
oh and his an AUSSIE!!!!!!!
they showed a stat of the offensive line. the gophers offense was 27 lbs heavier then the vikings offensive line!!!!!!
and i was awake the whole game!!!! :happy1: :happy1:
-
Stayed awake too. Parts of the game were entertaining but the 2nd half was a yawner. Wet Vagina is a terrible football team. Gophers D played very well. Morgan overall looked awful altho his receivers falling down a few times weren't necessarily his fault. Field was a disaster. Wet, new sod, horrible footing. Glad they won but playing in venues like that is what happens when you get invited to a Fart Bowl because you lost to the likes of Bowling Green and Illinois. Lucky no one on either side was seriously injured.
-
I need to take a nap so I can stay up that late to watch the game.
I did exactly that but still didn't make it to the end. Recorded it and finished watching this morning. Gophers definitely had the better team. To bad they lost those games to Bowling Green and Illinois. They would have been playing Michigan for the championship and lost....Go to Rose Bowl.
-
I actually made it till the third quarter and then went to bed. They did a good job even though the field was just plowed and seeded last week. What a joke that was.
-
:sleazy: :sleazy: hey GUNNER, how's that Iowa state game going. :sleazy: :rotflmao:

Been watching a fair amount of the bowl games. I know it happens every year, but all these guys not playing in them to, so called get ready for the no fun league is crazy.
Basically selling out there teammates iffin ya ask me
The Tennessee and Purdue game on right now is pretty dang good!!👍
-
Yeah.....31 to 30 Tennessee. Go gettum Big Ten

Yeah.....31 to 30 Tennessee. Go gettum Big Ten
:rotflmao: there's been 3 TD's since.

Purdue in overtime. 48 to 45. I could read the Tennessee Coaches lips after they were stopped at the goal line. "You gotta be F***ing kidding me." :tut: :tut: :tut:
Best bowl game I've seen this year.

 Most are lookin at a multi- million $ payday & not wanting to get hurt in a meaningless bowl game. :doah: That is a no brainer for almost all of 'em. Jefferson is a perfect example, he came out as a junior & signed a $13 mil/4 year deal.
-
Yea but I'm pretty sure Jefferson played in his last game which was a bowl game
Think what ya want, I don't necessarily disagree with ya gunner, but still think there bailing out on there teammates. Not gonna convince me otherwise.
-
 I'd bet at least 80% of their teammates would do the very same thing without thinkin twice about it ...................................if they had the chance. :doah:
-
I can't fault them for doing that. Not with enough money to live on for the rest of there life at stake. Besides they are playing w/o getting paid. College football is basically the minor league teams for the NFL. If I was pretty sure of that, I would probably not play either.
-
Justin Jefferson left LSU after 3 years in 2019 so he was a junior. The Vikings picked him in the 1st round, #22 overall, which they got from Buffalo when they traded Diggs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Jefferson

Watching the Michigan Georgia game. Michigan doesn't look like they even belong there. :doofus:
-
After watching both those games....Sure looks like the SEC is a lot better than anyone else. Georgia will get the chance to avenge that loss to Alabama.
-
I have to agree Ken & most of the country must think the same. Last line I seen was Alabama -13.5 & Geogia -6.5.
-
Bama, Georgia, Clemson, LSU and even Mississippi State can take Michigan down. Nothing against Michigan, those schools are just better.
-
  da iowegain Hawkeyes are already behind.

I see dat. Sounds like their stud running back opted out.

Wild game???? Rose Bowl tops them all. Ohio State and Utah just scored 5 touchdowns is just over 2 minutes. And they are only half way through the second quarter. 56 points and not half time yet. Ohio State just fumbled into the end zone on another long pass.

not for long!!!!!!!! 12 seconds left and ohio st on about the 3 yard line!! buckeyes up by 3 9 seconds left.

Well that sucked. My Big 10 loyalty only runs so deep & stops w/OH St. Time that the OH St. & Michigan monopoly comes to an end.
-
Great game to watch if you don't care who wins. Those 2 last night weren't worth watching. Blowouts. I quit watching in the 3rd quarter. 1 more tonight....Sugar Bowl.
-
Well that sucked. My Big 10 loyalty only runs so deep & stops w/OH St. Time that the OH St. & Michigan monopoly comes to an end.
Dotch I'm 66 years old and it's been the Big 2 vs the Little 8 for as long as I can remember.
-
 It seems like they're still the only 2 schools in the BIG 10 that get any of the 4 & 5 star recruits every year. :pouty: The SEC seems like they get 80-90% of those, at least for football, every year.  :doah:
-
Yep, Penn State & Nebraska were suppose to change things. All they brought is 2 more teams for the crappy bowls.
Now with being able to pay the kids the OSU & Michigan programs will get stronger and more dominate.
-
Yup, it's been a conference dominated by OH St. & Michigan for a long time. I'm only a few years behind you db. Still remember being an OJ fan when OH St. upset USC in the '69 Rose Bowl. They've been dominant ever since. Watched Woody Hayes toss a clipboard onto the field at Memorial Stadium when I was a student at the U. Saw him punch the Clemson kid in the throat on TV too. He never apologized. What a shining example of sportsmanship and epitomizes a lot of the problems with college sports and sports in general.
As many times as both Michigan, OH St. and to a lesser extent Michigan St. have been penalized for serious infractions by the NCAA, it seems like they pick up where they left off very quickly. Both The Big 10 and the NCAA like to play favorites and are capable of making bad situations disappear, along with a lot of help from the MSM. Follow the $. A few years ago, it looked like they had Michigan St. & Izzo dead to rights on a sex scandal cover up. There was even talk it would be his last year and he would step down. Then poof! Disappeared, all better, nothing ever happened. Ya right. I was once a bigger college sports fan than I am now. As you said, this allowing college players to be paid for their endorsements will only make matters worse.
-
Yeah, Woody & Bo were both quite the role models for their players in their prime. :pouty:
-
Watched Gophers sweep Mich St. in hockey over the weekend only to hear that LaFontaine was jumping to the pro's this a.m. effective immediately. Thought maybe he'd have to wait until the end of the season but oh well...
Gopher hoops has come back to earth after showing some moxy early on. Lost at IN yesterday after being ahead for a chunk of the game. Double teaming down low with no inside presence makes it tough against some of the bangers in the Big 10. Have still played better than I might've guessed. We could be watching Nebraska. Now that is a horrible excuse for a basketball team. Hoiberg has to be wondering what they slipped in his drink when he took that job.
-
Watched the Gophers lose a heartbreaker to Izzos bunch on the road Wednesday night. Too bad Curry got hurt in the final minute or the outcome could've easily been different. :doah: The Hawkeyes got a badly needed win over Indiana at home last night without their leading scorer doing much. His twin brother had a career game though & 23 TOs by the Hoosiers as well as 21-25 on FTs did the rest. :happy1:
-
Ya, that Michigan St. game was a heartbreaker in more ways than one. Latest reports have Curry's injury as an ankle, not an Achille's as some were speculating. Listed day to day sounds like. I watched parts of the IA-IN game while I was slaving away cleaning up the aftermath in the kitchen. Frannie had a meltdown in the first half so got to see him get t'eed up. Always nice to see someone has picked up the slack left by stalwarts such as Bobby Knights, Judd Heathcoate and Gene Keady. Izzo does a good job of pissing and moaning but he never gets T'eed along with getting most of the calls and non-calls anyway. Ain't in the same league as Frannie. Gophers-IA tilt on Sunday. Hook up the dogs to the sled! :happy1:
-
Your got that right about Izzo, Dotch. :banghead: He gets all the breaks from the zebras & never gets a T :doah: when could easily get at least 1 every game I see. :pouty:
-
We always hear the same thing about Saban, Belichick, Coach K, ya know, the guys that win a lot. :rotflmao:
-
 I'm kind of fan of Belichick & Coach K though but you can add Calipari to that list too as far as I'm concerned. Seems as though the Izzone used up all there good luck, for this week anyway, against the Gophers as Northwestern put an L on 'em in the early BIG 10 game yday. :happy1: A big 2nd 1/2 by their center was a big reason for a rare road win against Izzo.
-
I'm not a big basketball fan but didn't Michigan State stink early last year also and then play in the final four?
-
Yeah & it's starting to look like that could happen again this year. :pouty:
-
:pouty: yesterday while youz guyz were enjoying the first football game....... :pouty: i was watching basketball on ESPN. #1 ranked Baylor was getting whipped by Oklahoma St. Bylor came back from 18 pts down to make it a very interesting game!!!!
-
I was going there during the comercials too. That's 2 loses in a row at home for #1 Baylor as Texas Tech beat 'em on Tuesday too.
-
Saw that they lost too, both Baylor & Mich. St. Gophers stand little chance today other than they're at home. With Curry going down, they're even shorter of warm bodies than they were. The grind of the Big 10 season will catch up to them if it hasn't already. Said all along they'll prolly ambush a few teams that overlook them but they're still a team made up of used and spare parts. And yes, coach Cal is a slime ball. Seeing KY get beat is a good thing. :happy1:
-
Gophers and Iowa just started on Big Ten Channel.
-
 I thought Curry might be able to go today.
-
Nope. No Curry & no Sutherlin = no chance. A couple others out too.. Think they had to have 7 scholarship athletes eligible to field a team by Big 10 rules & they had 7. :doah: They've battled in the 2nd half apparently but they dug the hole too deep before the half.
-
 Thought I heard 'em say they had 8 today. Battle, Stephens, & the young center started makin shots after they went to the zone that really stopped our scoring. I even got a little nervous when they got it down to 3 pts. They couldn't quite get over the hump though before Keegan & McCaffrey made a couple big buckets. Murray had big block near the end too.
-
Gopher Sports was saying 7 pre game. I didn't have time to check. Checking on a ewe thru 1st half & pulling a lamb at half. Game got ugly after that so tuned in the football @$$kicking instead. Then I saw the score & flipped back. Saw the best part of the game anyway.
-
Got to tip my hat to the new coach & the guys that did play yday as they got it a lot closer than I thought they would. The players never quit & the switch to the zone was big. Get 'em healthy & a little more depth before the BIG 10 tourney, you never know.
-
Ya, Ben's done pretty well considering the disastrous hand he was dealt. They suited up 8 players yesterday and 7 of the 8 were scholarship athletes according to the U's own sports website. Two of their coaches were also out. They play hard, reminiscent of Clem's teams in that respect. Seeing Thompson add 8 points yesterday was indeed a pleasant surprise. The fear with him is he's not ready to play man to man, yet. When they played zone, it worked. Can't teach someone how to be 7' tall. IA should have something to say about what goes down in the Big 10. Their bench is deep enough and it looks wide open at this point. Any given night as they say.
-
a while back i either seen it on the toobe or read it somewhere, but whats the name of the gopher player thats up from a real little dinky town up somewhere noth of or by grand Miara?????

I see by Sunday's box score he got a few minutes in, a couple boards, an assist and a steal. Hope he can continue to contribute. They need all the help they can get. :happy1:
-
Figurin out how to win on the road in the Big 10 isn't easy................ever. A couple games over .500 on the road will keep you in the runnin for the conference title almost every year.
-
Watched the IA game last nite against Rutgers. Neither team could make a basket to save their souls. Took a dump in the 2nd half and the score remained the same when I came back! :doah: IA kinda got jobbed on that last foul call in the waning seconds of the game allowing Rutgers to win it 48 - 46. If Frannie was ever justified to have a meltdown that was it but he kept his cool. They'd been letting them beat on each other all nite up to that point. That was a ticky-tack call in the overall scheme of things.
Gopher game appears to be on yet for Saturday against Rutgers. Home game but guessing attendance may be off with the mask mandates, etc., etc. Starting year 3 of 15 days to flatten the curve...
-
Yeah, they were lettin play all game up until then. Both teams only shot ~ 30% for the game. :doah: Hawks barely shot 50% on FT's & got beat on the boards by 11.
-
Ya my wife couldn't believe I kept watching it. Told her it was like a train wreck--I couldn't look away. Watched IA St.- TT some the nite before. They were down by 15 before I quit watching that one.
-
The Purdue/Indiana game last night was a good game too. Indiana held onto win with only a couple late FTs out of their big because he only played 11 minutes as he was in foul trouble. Purdue won all the stats except FTs, Hoosiers made 7 more & that was difference.
-
It was a good game, much better than the Gopher women's BB vs. IA. Semi-competitive in the 1st half but the wheels came off after that. 105 - 49 embarassment. Whalen better hope this next year's class pans out or her tenure may get cut short
-
Right now Whalen supposedly has the 10th best group of seniors nationally committed for next year. All from Minnesota.
Just a side note.....Hopkins girls team is playing the number 1 ranked HS Girls team in the country from Washington DC at 4:00 today on ESPNU. The will play the number 2 ranked team from Texas tomorrow.
-
Terps beat Illinois handily & Michigan St/Wisconsin tip off shortly so the top spot in the BIG 10 is likely to change.

THEY PULL IT OFF!!!!!! Loewe, Thompson & Willis all played 40 minutes; 2 other guys played 37 minutes each. Willis had 32 pts., made 8 3-pt. shots.
-
Those 3 were all hot from the 3 pt line, Gophers did a good job on the boards too.
-
Different outcome last nite for the Gophers against one of the best teams money can buy in the Big 10. Just let 'em have too many 2nd chance baskets. Otherwise, the stat sheet was surprisingly close. I see IA suffered the same fate at the hands of Purdue as well. They made it interesting towards the end but fell short. The box score on their website gave me an error message so not sure what all transpired at least on the stat sheet. I know at one point they were down something like 20 points.
Jasmine Powell has left the Gopher women's BB program as of immediately. Things ain't looking pretty there. Whalen better hope she can right the ship next year or her days will be numbered. On the flip side, 5'6" guards have been the problem as in too many of them and not enough post players getting precious boards and scoring consistently, same as the men's program this year. Betting if Ben has anything to say about it, that will change in upcoming seasons.
-
Dotch  why did she leave???
I've heard Whalen has one of the best recruiting classes coming in.
-
Not sure why but she started 18 of 19 games. Her stats don't look too bad but I saw one game where she was benched and didn't start. She played but apparently there was an issue or issues. They had a similar situation a few years ago with a guard, Destiny Pitts, who left the team. Whalen is an old school, listen to the coach, hard nosed grinder. Betting it's easy to get in her doghouse if you don't fit that mold.
-
Dotch, the Hawks couldn't hit their :moon: early & the Boilermakers shot over 60% from the floor & just under that from deep. Hawks were more like 35/30 & that was the difference in the game.
-
I can see that from Whalen but she does have the creds!!! Maybe this Powell is snotty brat??? who knows???
I googled gophers women basketball. If I read between the lines, she struggled in a game and Whalen didn't start her in the second hay. Maybe hurt her feelings??
-
I use this https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/scoreboard/_/group/7 most of the time, Dotch.
-
Thanks Gunner! I placed that one in my sports folder. Now remembering which one it is for sure...
-
:happy1:
-
Bucking Fadgers! Just not enough horses & some really awful calls especially in the 1st half. Shut my favorite puke, Brad Davison, down in the 2nd half. Scary to think what might happen if this team ever can develop a quality bench...
-
I was hopin they'd pull it off after they tied it up late but their young guard, Davis, took over from there. :pouty:
-
Only battles Iowa won last night was from the 3 pt line & turnovers which wasn't enough in a tough 2 OT loss @ Penn St.
-
I see dat. I was in the zone writing last nite so I just heard bits and pieces. Looked like they got outrebounded & didn't shoot particularly well percentage-wise. Played at Penn St. Tough to win there, especially when you need to. The Gophers found that out many times in the Pitino era.
The Gophers play Purdue at The Barn tomorrow nite. Purdue's been on a tear lately & they have two big men vs. the Gopher's none. Curry has played admirably & I'd loved to see them pull an upset. Unfortunately I see foresee a potential drubbing in their future.
-
Purdue's had 4 guys in double figures the last 3-4 games with 1 or 2 of 'em comin off the bench. With their bigs that's tough to beat.
-
Ya, that went about how one would've expected. Gophers actually shot fairly well just got outrebounded & lost in the points in the paint dept. No surprise there. They're undersized vs. most of their opponents. Unless you have a whole team full of Jordan Murphy's, that's about what's gonna happen. Purdue is loaded with talent but very beatable. They run into officiating crews that don't appreciate Painter's patented clutch and grab defense and they're in foul trouble quickly or not able to execute because they can't play pattycake. The Gophers got under Trevon Williams skin, exposing him to be a hothead so be curious if other teams exploit that. Gophers still played hard, at one point crawling back to within 7 in the 2nd half. Add some rebounding muscle into the mix and they'll compete with anyone.
-
Another one that ended about like one would've guessed. Great 1st half aside from Battle forgetting to show up then things fell apart in the 2nd half. Bench points: IA 17, MN 5. Final score 71 - 59, 12 points. Strange. What are these bench points you speak of? Credit to IA for turning up the D in the 2nd half. Officials also let 'em play in the that half. Grabbing and bumping called in the 1st half wasn't in the 2nd for both teams. Fine, except the Gophers didn't get the memo. Should've been more physical and need to be moving forward.
Should be the easier part of the schedule coming up, at least playing teams with records more similar to their own. Righting the ship would help entice MN recruits on the fence and interest potential players in the portal. Oh for another Jordan Murphy and Reggie Lynch combination...🤔
-
Listened to some of it on the way home. Those boys need a win.
-
Gonna be a long row to hoe, with the portal anybody any good will be moving along. Be teaching spot for those looking for a winning program. This portal thing will turn out to be the worse thing to happen to marginal teams.
-
Listened to some of it on the way home. Those boys need a win.
damn Roony, your a glutton for punishment. :doah: I'll watch basketball but listen to it on the radio. Uffda.... You got courage. :rotflmao: :happy1:
Dutchy I totally agree. :happy1:

I haven't seen all the news about this year's team. Was surprised to heart that they have 11 transfers. Is that right? They had to replace the whole team from last year with no new recruits? That doesn't seem possible.
-

I counted 10 transfers on their roster page Ken but might've missed one.
https://gophersports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster
Eric Curry hung around because coach Johnson needed a warm body & thought he still had some gas left in the tank, rather than becoming his grad assistant as planned. Ihnen was out due to injury or he could've provided some minutes off the bench. Otherwise none of the players were here last year. Willis played here previously then transferred back here from the College of Charleston. Liked him when he played here under Pitino but he didn't get the minutes he should have. But like Sutherlin, Stephens and Loewe, he'll be gone next year. Have to be impressed that Johnson has done as well as he has. Could be Nebraska with a coach being paid big bucks in the 3rd year of his contract who has produced a 5 - 46 Big Ten record & is 20 - 62 overall in that timespan. Rumblings that Hoiberg's days will be numbered if he doesn't turn it around soon. They should've kept Tim Miles! :doah:
-
They all left because they fired Pitino? Hope Johnson has at least a decent recruiting class next season. Yeah, Nebraska at 0-14, is the only team below Minn. out of 14 teams.

That & the cupboard became pretty bare once guys like Kalscheur, Robbins, Mashburn, Johnson & Carr all declared they were entering the portal. There went about 70% of their scoring punch. No school loyalty either when you don't have to sit out a year anymore. Was a little surprised when Brandon Johnson didn't stick around. He didn't declare until later on. He definitely would've fit the mold & could've helped them win some of the games that were close. Played hard. DePaul's record, where he transferred, is 11-10. His mom is an alum there. He's an educated dude so that might've been a factor too.
One of Ben Johnson's reputed strengths at Xavier and UNI was his recruiting. At MN? We shall see. So far, the guy has proved he can coach with a team of spare parts anyway. Might be fun to see what he can do with some actual talent. :coffee:
-
Are any of the guys left Pitino's recruits?
-
Curry and Ihnen. Willis was a transfer student & sat out a year.
-
Keegan was able to stay out of foul trouble & they shot >40%from the floor for the 1st time in a week or so. Bohannon playing the point was big too as he had 0 TO's & the team only had 6 for the game. That's been the recipe for W's this year IMO. I like Ulis & Perkins getting more minutes at the off guard too as they both play some good D.
-
:oops1: :doah: Too many TO's & only 2 guys makin anything. :pouty: Glad to see Rutgers beat Ohio St though.
-
Gophers are now the worst team in Big Ten. Losing to a team with an 0-14 record in the conference. Even though they have 1 more win.
-
Yup, had this in the back of my mind when I saw the game was at Nebraska. Gophers dug a big hole in the 1st half. Came out of the chute throwing lazy passes into traffic like they were confident the Fuskers (as our friend, former NDSU an-sci prof Bert Moore calls them) were gonna roll over and play dead. They turned the ball over 18 times, gave up 25 points off those turnnovers, Curry, Stephens & Loewe all had an off night, then they got all 11 of their bench points from Sutherlin. Usually not a recipe for success. I don't get too worked up about where they are in the Big 10 standings. Nebraska is o-fer on the road. They are a horrible basketball team. So are the Gophers. The Gophers have an excuse. Nebraska doesn't. Next up: Penn St. on Sat. 7:30 at The Barn.

Yes the Gophers always have a excuse despite being in one of the largest cities of Big 10 teams.

Yes the Gophers always have a excuse despite being in one of the largest cities of Big 10 teams.
I think that has always worked against them.
When you go to other smaller Big 10 towns, the university is the biggest thing going. And if you are a star athlete on a good team, you truly are a Big Man on Campus.
I don't care if you are an All Big 10 caliber quarterback, in this town, that person won't get as much press coverage as the Vikings starting left guard who is playing like crap.
Plus, with the U of M...
Who was it Gov. Jesse V (or was it Perpich?) who dubbed us the Brain Power State or the Education State?
The MN Legislature and U of M Board of Regents has always been behind the power curve when it comes to funding athletics at the highest level in the Big 10. They assume if they spend money on athletics (facilities, coaches, etc.), that they will be held accountable for not spending more on education. Other states figure out how to fund both, but we can't seem to get that done here.
And now they have been so far behind for so long - even though they are catching up in many areas - they have gone for so long without a winning tradition - that top athletes rarely consider coming here.

I'm not buying that. They overpay both Football & Basketball coaches vs their success rate. They have some of the best facilities in the Big 10 especially if you consider they haven't won anything since Clem was around.
The metro has everything athletes look for, girls, clubs, girls, girls and more girls. They just don't sell the program for whatever reason. Are the expectations to low? The only expectation I remember was in the mens hockey. But that went away also when they grabbed the money and turned the hockey program into a also ran.
My fandom for the U pretty has evaporated. Once upon a time I was a big hockey guy. I would watch the basketball and football. To date I have watched zero basketball, about 5 minutes total of football and I did see a few periods of hockey. I think the people of Minnesota really want a winner at the U, however it's been forever since they have done anything and the people like me just give up.
-
The Gopher's excuse in the case of the basketball program is legit for now but it'll be short lived if it doesn't produce better results than the last go round relatively quickly. This basketball program has been snake bit for a long time and this state, not just the TC, is hungry for a consistently competitive team. The talent is here. We need to keep it here.
As far as facilities, ya, their stadium, hockey arena & practice facilities now are without a doubt some of the best in the country. Wasn't always that way up until recently. You may not follow the women's BB program but we've had front row seats in Bugtussle. Carlie Wagner grew up about a mile across the fields from us as the crow flies. She finished up in 2018 and never got to use the new practice facility and athlete housing. She said it was amazing. One other thing as nostalgic as it may be to us old farts, Williams or The Barn may not hold the same attraction to some of the blue chip athletes. They tend to like bright shiny objects.
Steve-O alluded to it and it was Rudy Perpich who declared this the "Brainpower State". Not sure if this was before or after his chopsticks factory brainfart but I digress. It was about that time that the elitists and academics really started to look down their noses at practitioners and made requirements to get into the U more difficult. Used to be they'd take anybody. Hell, they took me! They got rid of the general college and University Without Walls curriculum where they could stash athletes and make it easy for them to stay eligible. Mychal Thompson was in the Physical Geography class I had on West Bank. Boring as hell but if you had a pulse you passed that course. I saw him in class, once. Johnny Kundla was my conditioning instructor at the old gym on St. Paul campus. Inside it looked like someplace the Mandelbaums would hang out and throw the medicine ball. Murray Warmath was still on staff over on Mpls. East Bank campus in those days. He taught a class called "Angling Moderate Intensity". A lot of the athletes took that one and spent it watching films of Murray with his fishing buddies. Good times.
My zeal for University sports has dwindled as well db. Was fun watching Carlie and even before that, we went to The Barn many times to watch their games. That program tanked & is still in recovery mode, we hope. We used to come home Friday night, do chores and tune in Gopher hockey. Rinse and repeat Saturday nite. Listening to Wooger, Motzko and Doug McCloud was so easy. They messed that up. Tough to get the games & the :mad1: Big Ten Network would rather broadcast OH St., Michigan & Notre Dame. Marriucci used to be the toughest ticket in town to come by. Now there are empty seats galore. Been a Gopher BB fan thru thick and thru thin. Recent years tho, too much turnover and I don't have the passion for it I once did. Always been more lukewarm about football altho I enjoyed getting bombed on Mad Dog at Memorial Stadium & passing girls up back in the day. When the dummies tore down the stadium & moved the games downtown to The Dome, that set my interest back for decades, aside from the brief flash in the pan that was Lou Hoax perhaps. Start beating Ohio St., Michigan, Bucky and Gunner's beloved Hawkeyes consistently and then we'll talk.

I took that class my first semester at the U (198...?). I loved the class and the lectures. Mychal missed out.
But then compared to what Mychal was probably doing while I was in class, maybe I missed out.

Not in my lifetime nor your kids lifetime will that happen. As far as the barn goes I have a simple solution. Since the Big 10 likes 2:30 & 5 o'clock hockey games move the men into Ridder with the women. They would darn near (well at least 2,000 anyway) sell that out. Turn Mariucci into the basketball arena. But I'm sure the state would rather spend $75 to $100 million on another arena.
-
There's a lot $ that comes into the major college's coffers because of the revenue generated by their athletic programs. Specifically, the ones with the big TV contracts like BB & FB & without that cashflow there would most likely be some major cutbacks at all the schools. So, like almost everything else in our world today  ....................it's all about the money.
-
Bohanon & Murray didn't miss many in Iowa's win over the Terps :happy1: & Michigan had 5 guys in double figures while throttling Purdue.

And yet tuition keeps rising at a amazing rate. These kids are coming out of college nearly bankrupt, well at least the ones not working a job while going to school. I would love to see a audit of a place like Michigan where the football team prints money. I think we would be surprised how little money actually funneled down to the school.

I took that class in the fall of '77. Would've been Thompson's senior year so he (or someone) was probably just signing the guestbook just enough to stay eligible. They'd been on suspension the year prior. Biding his time until the Jail Blazers picked him as overall 1st draft pick in '78. The TA who taught the lab was a stoner, like, wow man... :doah: I also had Physical Geology that quarter on east bank. That was more my speed. Some cute girls in my lab but the way they dressed, betting they didn't do a lot of leg or armpit shaving. :whistling:
-
Had a class at the U with a running back, a defensive back and a lineman-not sure if he was offensive or defensive. The RB insisted that his name was preceded by “Mister”. The lineman would raise his hand and paraphrase what someone else just said-no original thoughts there. The DB actually was drafted, but never went anywhere. I was lucky enough to be seated in the same row of these gentlemen. We had a team assignment, and they all decided that I was the one to do all the work on the team. I dropped the class.

Iowa didn't take any prisoners, that's for sure. That was one of the few nites I liked seeing Michigan win a BB game. Most of the people I know who went to school at Purdue majored in Arrogance. Their 💩 don't stink. Purdue is very beatable on any given nite despite the announcers during the game putting them in the Final Four already...
Be interesting to see if the Gophers have anything left in the tank tonite or if they folded up their tents and went home.
-
Would be nice to beat Penn State tonight.
-
Gopher's game 'bout ready to start, I'll be watchin. Not many smiles from everyone's favorite Badger Bball player, #34 ;), today as Rutgers got a rare win in Madison. :happy1:  Ohio St's defense had a good 2nd 1/2 in Ann Arbor too so the conference title is still up in the air. The BIG 10 Tourney should be fun to watch too.
-
😄 Whoever plays Bucky next better send out the nut cup memo! He's due. Rodents tied at the half. Took great personal satisfaction in watching the men's hockey team squash The Ohio St. University & sweep their sorry assets. :happy1:
-
Nice 76 - 70 win back in The Barn. Not a dominating performance but they controlled the tempo in the 2nd half & played well enough to win. Dared Curry to keep taking that jump shot and he did , ending up with 22 pts. Getting Farrar in foul trouble didn't hurt. The way they started out I figured he'd just keep jamming down their throats all night. Got outrebounded something like 36 - 20 but they only turned the ball over 3 times vs. 18 the last time out. Penn St. coughed it up 13 times and the Gophers capitalized on it. At OH St. Tuesday. That one probably won't end so well.
-
Nice win....they got out rebounded because Curry sat on the bench the final 10 minutes until 25 seconds left. Still after getting bombed at Nebraska because they didn't come ready to win, they have to be feeling good.
-
Willis & Loewe played every minute while Battle only missed 4. Gopher's had nice day at the FT line only missing 1, for a +8, to go along with winning the TO battle. Putting Farrar on the bench gave 'em a lift IMO too as he can be a beast on the boards. A really good W for still only having 7 guys suited up. :happy1:
-
I'd love to see the Gophers make it 2 in a row today!! Gonna be cheering for Penn ST. & the Hoosiers in their home games today too.
-
I haven't been a BB fan for many years. Mayhaps I should jump on board.
-
Set to record.....skip over commercials.
-
Well, that ended about as expected. The Gophers team that beat Penn St. on Saturday played the 1st half and the one that stunk against Nebraska last Wednesday played the 2nd half. I'm sure the OH St. halftime speech probably went something like, "You're paid a lot to play better than that!" :rotflmao: Seriously, the Gophers looked gassed in the 2nd half. Lazy passes, short jump shots, getting beat to the ball for rebounds, missing assignments, sagging off and allowing open 3's. Yup, same team that got beat by Nebraska. Now they play at Penn St. Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. (WTH?!?!) and then have Northwestern in The Barn on Saturday. If they think they're tired now, there will be nothing left of these guys by then. Brutal schedule for a shorthanded team thanks to COVID. If the Gophers win one of those two I'll be impressed.
-
Just the opposite for the home team, they looked like they thought the Gophers wouldn't even get off the bus. :bonk: Probably more of a letdown after a big win at Ann Arbor though. They, OH St., have an extra 3 games to play yet so.............. At least Penn St. beat Tommy :happy1:, looked like Indiana gave Buckey all he could handle too.
-
Rutgers just put a thumpin on the Illini too. :happy1:  Nowhere near as close as the final score might indicate. Almost 1/2 time before they made a 3 & they got killed on the boards.
-
I watched that last one too. Every time IL made a run at 'em Rutgers had an answer. Purdue bested Northwestern 70 - 64 at Evanston. Was surprised that the final score was that close altho 7 points was about as close as Northwestern could get the entire game. When I looked before going outside again the deficit was worse than that. Still not convinced that Purdue is the 2nd coming or that the Big 10 is as strong as some think it is. Watched some of the Baylor - TT game and that was a slugfest. I see Tubby is stepping down from his alma mater at High Point. Always liked Tubby as a person. Hated his offense (nonexistent). If he could've found someone to run his offense plus keeping players happied up & out of trouble so they'd stay (Royce White - clepto & head case; Devoe Joseph - doobie brother; to name a few) no telling what he might've accomplished.
I see our favorite Bucky puke got another flagrant one the other nite. Wasn't a nut cup violation tho. He's probably just getting warmed up. Can't understand why so many people continue to defend this POS. One broadcast they made a big deal out of saying he didn't go to MN, chose to go to WI. After seeing him play, glad he didn't. Even coach Izzo, whom I have less respect for all the time, recently brushed it aside as just hard nosed basketball, someone you'd want on your team. Seriously Tom? You really want someone on your team who's willing to risk causing a potential career ending injury to their opponents in order to win a game? Wow. Must've gone to the Sean Payton school of coaching I guess.

Don't forget the Gophers are a 3:00 start today at Penn St , & the Hawks have Michigan in Carver at 6.
-
I gotta go back to the office & sign the guest book after lunch but maybe I can watch the Gophers online between interruptions. I plan on watching the Hawks. Told the ewes to put a cork in it until Saturday. ;)
-
Gophers played pretty well against Penn State a week ago. They were embarrassing against Ohio State a couple days ago. 40 points for a major college team is terrible. Which team will show up today?
-
Another crap game. Getting to the point where these guys aren't worth watching. :surrender: :surrender: :surrender:
-
Some good D by Penn St today but the Gophers only had 1 in double figures & that won't cut it on the road in the BIG 10. :doah: Lost the rebounding battle pretty bad too.
-
Big game for the Hawks 'bout ready to start, ESPN. I sure hope it's a better game than the last.
-
Some good D by Penn St today but the Gophers only had 1 in double figures & that won't cut it on the road in the BIG 10. :doah: Lost the rebounding battle pretty bad too.
Yup, completely shut Curry down too. He had 22 pts. against them last Saturday. 1 today. Love to have a player like Harrar. Hopefully they can find a double double machine for next year. As far as surprised by today's outcome, nope. Disappointed? Always when they lose, but considering what this team is made up of and what they've been through, way better than I would've expected given the circumstances at the beginning of the season. No way did I expect a team in the Big Dance nor the NIT. Battle is a good forward. Thompson shows promise. Recruit well, have some luck in the transfer portal and this team is better for next year. At The Barn on Sat. then games every 4 days for the remainder of the season. Relative to the 4 games in 8 days schedule they've been on, that'll seem like a vacation. Now let's see how them Hawkeyes are doing...
-
Sorry gunner, might've jinxed 'em. Only got to watch the 2nd half. Saw the Hawks miss 3 dunks in that timeframe. Left 'em for dead then they made a furious comeback. Almost had 'em at the end. Misery loves company. Next up, at OH St. on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the best paid team in the Big 10! :coffee:
-
Hawks didn't shoot FT's very good either. They did do a good job on Dickinson but #14 had a big game,12-15, especially late. The 1 guard made 2-3 clutch 3's down the stretch too. :pouty:
-
Tough to win when you have 5 points 10 minutes into the game. 2 field goals by Willis. Never could get caught up again.
-
Gophers play NW at 3(BTN), Illni @ Mich St at 11(ESPN), & Iowa plays at OH St @ 1:30(Fox)1
-
Way to go Hawks! & at Columbus no less... :cheerleader:
-
Yeah, a great win  especially after falling behind by 10 right out the chute. Got 'em in a bit of foul trouble, started to double & triple Liddell in the 2nd 1/2, & won the TO/REB battles too. Big 1st 1/2 from Keegan & brother had nice 2nd 1/2. Gophers didn't look like the same team that played Penn St. either. With Willis out they still have 4 in double figures.
-
Great day. Ohio St. goes down against Frannie's Phenoms, IL knocks off Izzo at the Breslin Center and Ben's Boys pull off one at home. Sometimes it seems like they thrive on adversity. Willis was out sick and Curry was a game-time decision. Both of those guys looked sick the last game. At one point in the first half the Gophers were shooting 80% from beyond the arc. They matched up better with Northwestern than some teams. With no big ogre to contend with under the basket, they played almost even-steven for points in the paint and outrebounded them. Loewe did it all & Battle was more physical on the boards than I've seen him with 14 rebounds to go along with his 21 pts. That made a huge difference. Gophers get Bucky and our favorite puke on Wednesday nite, 8 p.m. at The Barn. I will be sticking pins in my Brad Davison doll in anticipation...
Gopher hockey won again tonite for the sweep, coming from behind at Penn St. where they've struggled to win. Playing for a 1st round bye in the Big 10 tournament.
-
 damn Dotch, you need to find something to do other then lay around on the couch :sleazy: :rotflmao: :moon:

I missed the Hawkeye game. Had to move gates, panels, bales, & pails instead. Another set of twins at choretime. I need a TV out in the barn!

Were those the same guys playing Northwestern that played Penn State 3 days ago???   :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:
-
Dunno if Davison just gave Dickinson a rap in the nuts on that screen but he went down like a house of cards...

Just tuned in & was wonderin the same thing. The body part he was holdin was a bit high :doah: for the family jewels though. ;)

That's a pay extra channel on Direct TV. I don't get it.
:pouty: We have Paul Bunyan TV up here & it's a lot better than what we have down home which is Mediacom now. We did have DirectTV for quite a while down there but the rates kept going up for less & less & finally said see ya. :tut: At least with Mediacom we get some more local channels & the Wi-Fi is better, cheaper too.
-
My buddy in Bemidji has that Gunner. Likes it.
Geez, I go outside for a couple hours to slave away & miss all the good stuff. The Bucky-Michigan game reminded me of a hockey game at times when I was watching it and at the end a fight breaks out, led by Michigan's head fred, Juwan Howard! :doah:

See? mikey & I are just concerned about yer heart health... :rotflmao:
The altercation may have some implications on Bucky's Wed. nite game with the Gophers. There were some WI players who mixed it up pretty good after Howard threw the punch, some of them throwing punches themselves & escalating the situation rather than backing off. Gard is a douchebag, claiming he called the timeout with 15 seconds left to keep his subs from getting munched trying to get the ball in. They're subs! Let 'em get munched. That's how they learn, by making mistakes and looking at film to correct them. :doah:
Howard is equally as big a douchebag after listening to his postgame press conference interview. Took no responsibility for his actions. Was just waiting for him to play the race card. If you want to express your displeasure, fine, then move along. Instead, he chose to keep jacking his jaws and didn't let it drop. IMO, both coaches should get suspended along with several of the players & assistant coaches who appeared to lose control.
-
:tut: I agree, Dotch, & that's Howard's 2nd one of these as he got into it with Turgeon too. :doah: Read a pc where it sounded like his bosses where really :angry2:..................we'll see.

2 year contract with Direct TV. Expires in Sept. May not go back. Would love to be able to get Mid-Continent.
-
Juwan Howard suspended the rest of the regular season with a $40K fine. Greg Gard gets a 10K fine, no suspension. Michigan's Moussa Diabate and Terrance Williams II, and Jahcobi Neath of Wisconsin will be sitting out their team's next game. Won't be of much consequence in the Gophers game. Neath has scored a whopping 31 pts. and played 150 minutes all season. A minor bench player at best.
-
Thought it might cost Howard his job at 1st, but I guess not. He did get into it with Turgeon at BIG 10 Tourney last year too but that didn't get physical. I've seen many post-game lines where the coaches were upset with each other, but this was way over the top. Howard got the stiffer penalty as he should IMO but Gard didn't use the best judgement either as he should've seen how :angry2: Howard was & steered clear of him instead of putting his hands on him attempting to explain his side of it. :pouty:
-
just read where the university of Eisc is going to pay the fine for the coach!
-
I thought Bucky got off pretty easy, probably too easy. Should've given Gard at least a one game suspension. I read the letter from the WI athletic dept. basically saying they did nothing wrong. This from the same outfit covering for Davison's antics the last 5 seasons. I read Howard's apology. See if he means it now.

Mich St vs Ia @ 6:00 on ESPN tonight :cheerleader:
-
And in IA City at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Be good to see Frannie's Phenoms best Sparty. Hopefully there are no complications during chores tonite. Wife had the day off so she should have most of them done by the time I get home. Ya right...
-
Keegan got off to another fast start, 14 pts in < 8 minutes, then Frannie's oldest  came in & drained a couple quick 3's. Quickly up by 20 & the game was pretty much over. Hawks shot better, 43% from the field & deep, & won the TO battle too. We don't see Izzo's squad get beat like that very often :happy1: , so I had a couple extra. :toast: I hope they can keep it going. :cheerleader:
-
Fun to watch Izzo get a taste of his own medicine that's fer sure. Every time Sparty got within 10 pts., the Hawkeyes would put on a burst. Pretty unselfish play and nice to have the luxury of a deep bench.
Watched the Fuskers lose to Northwestern afterwards. The Fuskers have one guy worth a crap and the rest of the team, not so much. Freddie must be having second thoughts.
Gophers tonite against Bucky at 8 on BTN. Hopefully the Barn is rockin'. Don't forget to wear yer cup! :coffee:
-
Yeah, all 14 got in the game & 11 of 'em scored. I think it was about the same for Oh St. Would love to hear the Barn serenade ol' BD with some Nananana hey hey ................goodbye tonight. :happy1:
-
Gophers won the TO battle but Davis & their bigs killed 'em on the boards. :pouty:
-
Tough loss. Especially to a team loaded with Minn kids.
-
Yup, last minute flurry but just couldn't quite get over the hump at the end. Had Davis fouled out a few minutes earlier, might've been a different scenario. They did a pretty good job of keeping him bottled up on the offensive end. The very best thing about this game was we won't have to put up with Brad Davison's BS at The Barn anymore. Still remember watching him purposely trip & injure Nate Mason then sticking his leg out to cause Jordan Murphy to land awkwardly, the kind of play that wrecks ankles and knees. Good thing Murph kept his cool or they would've been picking up pieces of Brad Davison with a stick and a spoon. Good riddance!
Next up: Indiana at The Barn Sunday on ESPN2 @ 5 p.m.
-
 game last night in Champaign, Oh St was down 15 early & led by 15 late but had to hang for the win. Hawks have the late game tonight in Lincoln & on FS1. This is no time for a letdown. :cheerleader:

I usually start following college hoops around tourney time. Does any big 10 team have a chance???
-
I saw that IL got beat last nite when I was looking my phone this a.m. I know they were ahead at the half but just barely after coming out of the gate like a house afire. The Fuskers on their home turf is always dicey especially this time of year. They have nothing to lose. Luckily they are a really bad basketball team, even worse than the Gophers.
As far as who in the Big 10 might have a chance of a run, Purdue & possibly IL, but all the teams at the top can and have had some off nights as IL just showed. WI if they can play their slow tempo but their Achilles heel has always been relying on too many big, slow white guys. The Gophers almost beat them so matched up against a team with a better inside game, more speed & a deeper bench, a longshot at best. I'd say look out for the Big 12.
-
 Some depth inside & teams the get really good guard play usually do well in March. I think the top 5-6 teams in the BIG 10 have a good chance to win some games in the NCAA but I agree Purdue & Illinois probably have the best shot to advance the furthest.
-
Nice win for Frannie & the boys. The Fuskers gave them a tussle in the 1st half but looked like they were in control most of the 2nd half. Gotta admit I was flipping between that and Gopher hockey. Gophers took revenge on Bucky for the rude treatment the BB received the other nite. Big 5 - 0 win over the Bucking Fadgers. Take that Brad Davison! 😎
-
Actually it was about 1/2 way through the 2nd when they went on a 11-0 run with the help of 3 TOs before it was really in control. Perkins led the way with 20 pts & 5 others had double figures. Hawks had 7 guys play 20 minutes or more too. The only real difference in the box score is on FT line & on the offensive glass. Glad to get out of there with a win :happy1:, NW next on Monday @ Carver.

Men's gopher hockey at 7 pm tonight on BTN. WAY better than hoops! :sleazy: :happy1:

Yuppers, Notre Dame picks off Michigan so Gophers are outright Big 10 Champs. Gophers score 2 quick goals 21 seconds apart right after that final just to make damn sure. :happy1:

4-0 gophers in the 3rd....now get that shutout for the goalie!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:

Gophers made a game of it after trailing 70 - 43 at one point in the 2nd half. They cut it to within 3 with 5 seconds remaining. Willis had 7 three pointers to lead the comeback. Battle didn't have a great game scoring but had 7 boards as did Curry. Curry had 6 points but couldn't help but wonder where that 15' jumper was he lit up Penn St. with a few weeks back? Looked like it was open several times but he chose to pass the ball off instead. Could've taken some of the heat off outside or allowed Battle to drive had he made a few of those to keep them honest.
At Maryland on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on BTN.
-
I watched most of the 1st half but flipped around after they got down big in the 2nd. Hoosiers were gettin a lot of shots at the rim & then the 3's started falling. Gophers got off to another slow start too, Curry & Loewe really struggled. Hawks have NW @ Carver tonight at 7, BTN.
-
An EZ win but still pretty hard to watch as not much was falling for either team. Hawks had 2 that shot pretty well, they only had 1. A big advantage on the offensive glass for Ia again played a major part in the W.
-
I saw that Hawkeye game Monday in part. Every time I looked in on it, the Hawks had it pretty well in hand. Northwestern looks to be struggling down the stretch.
Gophers come up short last nite 84 - 73 against Maryland after cutting it to 2 pts. with 2:34 left. Battle put up 39 pts. & Willis chipped in 21. Loewe had 5 while Stephens & Sutherlin had 4 apiece Curry out with an injury (imagine that) and the Gophers were outscored 46 - 16 in the paint. Maryland had 15 bench points vs. 4 for the Gophers. Tough to win many games with stats like those.
When Battle is on like last nite he's tough to stop. Get Ihnen (6' 9") back for next year with Parker Fox (6' 8") healthy after sitting out this season and games like these could have a different outcome.
Final regular season game at Northwestern Sunday 6:30 p.m. on BTN.
-
Watched the 1st 1/2 & start/finish of the 2nd of the Gopher's game. Tough to win on the road with only 2 in double figures when the home team has 5. Iowa/Michigan in Ann Arbor @ 8 tonight, FS1.
-
How 'bout them Hawks? :happy1:
-
How 'bout them Hawks? :happy1:
:dancinred: :cheerleader: Still got a little nervous when it was down to 7 with ~ 2 minutes to go. Hawks got 2 quick TOs then though so it was over. Hawks outscored 'em by almost 20 on FTs & 3s, #15 & #3 were 9/11 from deep, & that's tough to beat. Some good D too as we had 10 steals.
-
See the Fuskers upset Bucky at the Kohl Center this afternoon! Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of jerks... :rotflmao: Ohio St. got picked off by Michigan too. Hopefully the Hawks do same against Illinoise. IA has the length to compete with them. The Gophers against Northwestern? On the road so who knows. Be nice if they're healthy for a change. Have heard nothing to the contrary so we shall see... :coffee:
-
Same Gophers team playing the 1st half that lost to the Fuskers... Hawks looking good :happy1:
-
Hawks missed 12 of 22 FTs :doah:, most of those in the 2nd 1/2. They make their usual % & they win by 4. :pouty:
-
Really thought the Hawks had 'em but as you say, ya gotta hit yer free throws. :pouty:
Gophers looked tired right out of the chute. Battle & Willis played the entire game. Stephens played 37 minutes. Curry looked like he was still injured. Outrebounded 48 - 31. Sutherlin had all 8 bench points & Loewe struggled, again. They get Penn St. in the Big 10 tournament after the NU/NE tilt Wed. They're tired and not goin' anywhere so they may as well start on next year ASAP. They have A LOT of work to do.
As far as their season goes, I'd give them a B- based on the hand they were dealt. I defy any of the teams in the Big 10 or country for that matter to go through the wholesale lineup change the Gophers had to, then have two of the players who did stick around injured for the season and try to put a championship product on the floor. All this with a new head coach who had never coached before! :doah: Appears the guy can coach. Given the late start he got, he recruited better than I would've thought at least through the portal. Now he needs some higher caliber players. He has some. Battle is a future All Big 10 forward if he can stay healthy. Any team would love to have a guy like that. Parker Fox should be a contributing factor not only scoring but on the boards. Being out for a year, Ihnen is an unknown quantity although that wingspan should translate into more rebounds. He also had an outside shot that could come in handy. Thompson needs to hit the weight room and learn some dance moves. Caught some glimpses of what he could be but as mentioned, has a lot of work to do. Guards suddenly become the question for next year. Who will they find?
-
 I've got to agree on the Gopher's season, Dotch. They kept me checkin in to see how they were doing. Another year, stay away from all the injuries, add a couple key players, some depth, & you never know what could happen next season. Is Willis coming back or is he done?
-
Afraid Payton Willis is done unless the NCAA comes up with some new goofy rules.
-
Well....the season is over. They played like the number 14 seed. Hopefully some good recruits will help next year.
-
The 1st 1/2 was hard to watch as nobody could get anything to drop. Stephens not being able to play had to hurt. I didn't realize so many of their guards were seniors, definitely going to need help there next season. Ind/Mich is the 1st game @ 10:30, Ia/NW @ ~ 2.
-
Two words: No Depth
-
I made my first attempt at watching them yesterday, didn't last very long. Watching re-runs of NCIS was less predictable.
-
The boys were tuckered when the 2nd half rolled around. All the starters except Curry played the entire 40 minutes. Stephens, once he recovered from his migraine enough, spelled him for 1 minute. Curry still looked injured judging by the hitch in the motion on his jumper. He battled Harrar admirably tho, holding him to 6 pts. Didn't realize that 3 of the Gopher starters were in the top 4 in minutes played in the Big 10.
Not sure yet who the Gophers might have hiding in the weeds as far as guards. At least we have a head coach this year, something we didn't have once Pitino got fired. The recruiting process is already in place and not last minute. Some naysayers saying Johnson should've played his bench more. Perhaps, but think he might've been sending a message to the MN HS players of note that if you come here or come back here, you will play once you're ready anyway. Can't help but think of MN Mr. Basketball Isaiah Dahlman who rode the pine at Michigan St. for 4 years. What a waste. Had Curry not been hurt or COVID not been a factor, they probably would've red-shirted Thompson.
-
:oops1: Closer to 1:15 for the 2nd game today. :bonk:

Hawks squashing Northworstern 64 - 31 at the half...

Gophers had a bench full of players. Evidently none of them are good enough to play for a team that finished last out of 14 teams. How many are seniors? What will happen to them when a new class of freshmen come in? Cut them?
-

Wasn't paying much attention to who was on the bench the other nite but here's the breakdown on who's who:
Non-starting seniors included Ogele, Sutherlin, and Daniels. Kern is a grad student.
Starting seniors included Willis, Curry, Stephens and Loewe.
Sophomores are Battle & Ramberg.
Juniors are Parker Fox (injured) & Ihnen (injured)
Freshmen are Thompson, Purcell & Thiam.
This is the list of players for next year, scholarship & walk on players so far:
G: Braeden Carrington/Abdoulaye Thiam
G: Joshua Ola-Joseph/Jaden Henley
F: Jamison Battle
F: Isaiah Ihnen/Pharrel Payne
F/C: Parker Fox/Treyton Thompson
*Walk-ons: Will Ramberg, Jackson Purcell
Johnson has 4 more scholarships to dole out yet the way it sounds after the commitments listed in that gopherhole article I posted. Some of these bench guys are part of the practice squad that scrimmages the starters. Even in Dutcher's & Clem's days, there were numerous players who rarely saw the court in games that counted. Simply weren't good enough to compete at that level. Will some of them be forced to leave? No if they're scholarship athletes but some of them may leave on their own if they're walk-ons and someone who is better with a scholarship shows up.

Penn St. picks off OH St. so that was an interesting turn of events. Harrar sticking around another year & remaining healthy was a huge factor for them.
-
:pouty: meh the gopher mens hockey team is where its at. 8pm tomorrow night on the big 10 network!!!!! :happy1:
-
:tut: Aw, go lay by yer dish! :rotflmao: Yup, Penn St. is in town at Mariucci. Hope they have some goals left in 'em after pounding on Bucky a couple weekends ago. :happy1:
-
listrened to an interview with the HC the other night......guess its a one and done deal if they lose.....so yea they need to bring it!!!!!!
-
Maybe they can bus a crowd over from the High School Tourney at the X. Lord knows they won't draw flies on their own.
-
Looked like the stands where pretty full when they played the cheese head hockey team???
-
Back before the Big 10 became whores for the money hockey was fun. Big time rivalries with several programs both in-state and outstate. Now, not so much. I haven't watched a full period of Gopher hockey this year and the game vs Penn State won't be one I watch either. I don't care about Penn State. The game against them means nothing to me. Give me a battle against Duluth, St. Cloud, North Dakota and even Bucky and I would be glued to the TV.
People can spew about how great the Big 10 is for hockey, but the proof is you can get a ticket anytime for any game at Mariucci. That was seldom the case before the U bent over for the Big 10.

Yup, dutchy, was a bitter pill to swallow for me too after being at the U when Herbie had national championships and the Miracle on Ice crew. Up until they joined the Big 10 conference, for years that was our Friday & Saturday nite ritual. Come in the house after chores, make supper & watch Gopher hockey. The guys doing the games were great. Now the Big 10 broadcasters (if they even televise the Gopher games) are hit and miss, especially the Kelly(?) guy they think is so great. One of the most bland, milk toast hockey announcers I've ever listened to especially after hearing the likes of Doug McLeod and The Wooger. Donnie was a big factor in making the switch too. WTH was he thinking?
One has to hope that rivalries develop over time. Aside from the Badgers and the occasional interaction with Mich St. & Mich over the years, that simply hasn't happened. I didn't even realize Ohio St. had a hockey team until the Big 10 hockey conference was created. That said, I enjoy seeing Michigan, Bucky or Ohio St. get beat at anything including tiddly winks so there is that. Now if the Hawkeyes would just get a hockey team... :rotflmao:
-
oh i agree with you guys about the big 10 crap with what it did to hockey. them rivalries where awesome.
back in my DCI days i had a friend that had st cloud state season tickets, said if i ever wanted to go he said ask. so i asked once when st cloud was playing to gophers......he laughed at me. :doah: he said when st cloud plays Alaska Anchorage you got a shot!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
-
I actually followed the Gopher men's hockey team quite a bit closer back when it was the old WCHA, guys. I couldn't get the games on TV down home much though but usually knew when they were playing 1 of their better rivals that were good that year.
-
if i find where st cloud, the gophers or UMD are playing i try and tune in........especially now at tourney time!!!!!!
-
Great move by Frannie putting Toussaint in & going to the zone. That got 'em running, rebounding, & took Rutgers out their offense. Hitting 22 straight FTs, 25/27 for the game & winning the battle on the boards didn't hurt either. Got pretty chippy though as there was 6 technical fouls called.
-
so all this BB talk........gotta question........does does Dotches favorite bucky player, this Davidson, :sleazy: have any chance of being and NBA player?????
-
 I wouldn't think he'd get drafted very high, if at all. He can shoot the 3 pretty decent, plays tough D, & rebounds OK so I wouldn't be that surprised to see some team give him a look. Might have to play the G league for a year or 2 before getting a real shot though.
-
Davison might be able to play G league or overseas but rumor has it per some info on the gopherhole, his butt buddy, coach Gard, is keeping him around as a grad assistant. Should be lots more tripping, elbowing, flopping & nut punching in their future. Classy.
Man oh man, wish I'd watched that Hawkeye game. Doing tax chit is overrated. With all those technicals, did they have to get that Francon meter out?
-
 Think I heard that on BD34 during a conference game this season too, Dotch. Not 1 technical was called on Fran. :doah: At 1/2 court during a TV timeout to chat with the refs a little though but quite calm for Fran. No more than a 8, maybe a 7 on your scale IMO. Link didn't work on my phone but will try it on the confuser later. I actually like Frannie altho he's not as easy for a Gopher fan to like as Todd Lickliter was... :rotflmao: Watched an interview someone did with McCaffery & it was pretty interesting. His family has has some major health issues to overcome. Philly guy, came across as pretty grounded, not just a bag of hot air or full of himself. Saw Bucky get beat by Sparty. One of those games where it would've been nice if they both could've lost.
-
Watching hockey but whenever that Stoopid Rona commercial about not wanting her kids with the shot comes in I flipped the channel. Iowa got damn lucky!!! :sleazy: :rotflmao:

I thought maybe he was courting the ladies of Inger or at least helping them find their dentures...
From my post back on Jan. 17th: " IA should have something to say about what goes down in the Big 10. Their bench is deep enough and it looks wide open at this point. Any given night as they say."
I was downright prophetic, doncha think? More likely 3 or 4 G&T's deep when I wrote that...:rotflmao:
Congrats to the Hawkeyes! Great game and great result. I like this team. After watching them back in December when they were struggling to rebound & getting beat by IA St., I thought the Gophers might have a crack at them. Not so much. They brought guys off the bench today I don't remember seeing much of and they were instrumental in making it happen. Always good to see Purdon't biff it in a big game especially by a team that deserved to win today. :happy1:

How Gophers looking in basketball? Decent seed or are they a NIT team again?
-
:pouty: They didn't deserve to win. A lot of shots that were short from Iowa yday & I'm not sure if that was Richmond's tough, physical defense or a hangover from the BIG 10 tourney. Don't matter, Hawks still had a chance at the end but..................... :bonk:  :tut: But it was an Alaskan IPA & Evans Williams Apple yday, glenn!

How Gophers looking in basketball? Decent seed or are they a NIT team again?
if i heard this right, the m mens team is golfing and womens team is in the NIT!!!!!!
-
Interesting. I thought I read here or on IDO that they blazed through the pre-season with this new coach. Maybe it wasn't the old coach but a lack of talent?
Oh well, maybe they will get good someday.
-
They did do well in the pre-season and snuck up on Michigan at Crisler Arena early on making some think they might be better than anticipated. Also, as anticipated, the grind of the Big 10 season with only one guy of any significance (Sutherlin) coming off the bench took its toll. To win 4 Big 10 games was on the upper end of where some of us diehard Gopher fans thought they'd be. To think they'd make the NIT at the start of the season was pie in the sky. By the same token, this team battled and they were still in all but 2 or 3 of their Big 10 games well into the 2nd half, coming close to pulling off upsets in several of them. As we were talking here a little bit ago, that doesn't say much for teams in the Big 10 being dominant as evidenced by the 1st round of the NCAA tournament so far. Regardless, Minnesota was not a good basketball team.
If they had kept Pitino around another year, I could've lived with it. He won the NIT in 2014 with Tubby's guys and was Big 10 coach of the year in 2017. But, it looked like he was going nowhere after 8 seasons, only winning 6 Big 10 games in his last season and none on the road. This transfer portal thing has put a whole new dynamic on the college game, one I personally don't care for as it sends the wrong message. If you make a commitment, you don't have to honor it if you decide to change your mind or someone helps change it for you. Screw the team, it's all about me. Unfortunately, it's a reality that teams and fans have to adapt to. Who can play it best will determine a large part of the success of any team. Hopefully Ben plays it well as he'll need to. Otherwise, we'll keep battling with Nebraska for basements rights.
-
Gophers women beat Green Bay in NIT.....73-65
-
Saw that & still can't believe they got invited. :doah:
-
Between the NCAA's & NIT you have to be really, really, really, really bad not to be invited to a post season tourney.

#1 seed and defending national champs Baylor got beat by Duke!!

I tuned in during commercials. The kid from Sweden (goalie) dominated the Gophers from what I saw.

yep he was pretty darn good. the announcers kept saying to beat him the gophers had to get close and redirect the puck.........they did make it close at 4-3 but to little to late. gophers scored 2 goals with like 1 1/2 minutes remaining!!!!
both teams should still go to the big tourney though!!!!!!
-
Normally, I'm a BIG 10 guy but ..........................it didn't bother me 1 bit to see the Cyclones & ex- gopher Kalscheur beat Bucky & BD34 at their own game. A lot of players hitting the floor in this 1 & Dotch's buddy might have led the field. Most of the time it wasn't on his terms either. :happy1:
-
Saw that! My pal got at least 1 flop call that I saw & should've been called for kicking his leg out on one 3 ball attempt. Happy for IA St. after a rough season last year. Hopefully the Gophers follow suit next year. :happy1:

Forgot my personal fave tho was when the little dipstick Davison jumped on Conditt, then flew into him again and stepped on his ankle tripping him. Somehow Conditt got called for a moving screen outta the deal! WTH?!?!?! :doah: Watching Conditt's right ankle on the replay made me wince. Could've easily have sprained it or worse. Twitter was full of folks today hoping Davison goes on to play at the next level, then pulls that crap on the wrong guy. Lotsa people would pay to watch the Grayson Allen of the Big 10 get his comeuppance.

I wouldn't say I have little faith......well maybe, but maybe not, I'm not sure. :sleazy:

Looks like most MN teams won, to bad St. Cloud didn't advance.

 Hey Dotch, how'd that coach for Arkansas ever get out of the state without at least a short stint with the Gophers?  :bonk:

He was on a lot of wish lists along with Brian Dutcher but don't recall they interviewed him or that he was ever interested. Can't blame him either way. He had a program built there. Here the cupboards were bare. Pretty sure too even prior to that, his dad, Bill had left the U amidst some serious violations not to mention the Ohio St. brawl. Some of the gutless, touchy-feely, warm fuzzy-types in charge at the U probably didn't want to reassociate themselves with all that.

Better check the price of tires Glenn, you might want to get some more hours to afford tires. Price of those things are stupid high in my opinion.

I think he was HC in the NBA before he even tried college & that was as an assistant at 1st. He did have a good run at Nevada before this job though.

Old Motzko has himself some talent. You need to wonder how good they would be had LaFontaine not left. Wonder what the real story is with him leaving? Very strange he leaves after the season starts.

So Gunner, I see where your Hawkeye sophomore center is entering the transfer portal.
When they go to a different school what happens to there scholarship??? They should be required to cough up the cost of what tuition would be. :doofus:
-
 No idea, he got very little PT this year. Must not work that way either or so many of 'em wouldn't be doing it. Bet Dotch knows & he MIGHT even be able explain it for you, if he has enough time. :sleazy: :nerd:  ;)
-
Anything for my little blue katchup-loving buddy... :rotflmao:
I don't know all the ins and outs but, when they enter the portal, they run the risk of losing their scholarship if the school decides to pull it and give it to someone else in the meantime, if the individual entering the portal changes their mind & wants to stay at their original school. That varies from school to school and situation to situation. They do not have to pay the scholarship back anywhere I am aware of. Most will get another scholarship at their new school although I would suspect they could walk on, which would be kinda dumb but these are kids, most of them anyway.
-
Lindsey Whalen loses 7 players to transfer. Pretty tough to have spring practice with 3 players. At least she will get the 4 new recruits when summer school starts in June. Why are they all leaving? Most are saying they want to play on a winning team. Evidently that's not the Gophers.
In sports it used to be said you can’t replace the whole team so the coach had to go. Apparently the gopher women are the exception to the rule.
She was just inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame this week. Sure looks like she was a great player, but can't coach.
She should have 1 more year and if this disaster continues with the supposedly Number 10 rated class in Div 1 Women's BB, she needs to be replaced.
-
I haven't been paying enough attention to know. Is it that Whalen can't coach or is it kids to day don't want to be pushed?
Otherwise, if a talented gal REALLY wants to win a championship, there are only a handful of teams that seem to have a chance to win year after year. And the grass is always greener...
-
When there are that many players leaving, there is clearly a lack of confidence in the coach and the team. She has been there for 5 years now. And has gotten nowhere. And the players are leaving the team in big numbers. Time for Coyle to see the writing on the wall. Being a home state icon is not getting the job done. I hope I am wrong and the new recruits can find winning ways.
-
IMO that transfer portal is a bunch of total :bs:. if they didnt want to play here, why come at all??????
anyhow, 7;30 tonight gopher hockey against mankota!!!!!!! :happy1: :happy1: final 4 action...........

Actually this was Whalen's 4th season coaching but that's immaterial. She's been lucky to have the press in her back pocket or she would've been ridden out of here on a rail by now. I was surprised after getting off to a good start her first year that she suddenly had difficulty that has been ongoing. I expected big things the 2nd year and it's been downhill from there. COVID and the transfer portal have not treated her kindly. If she doesn't show vast improvement next year though, the program needs to move on without her. This isn't working.
Like Steve-O said, there have been some indications such as in the Destiny Pitts case where player behavior showed little respect for the coach or regard for the team. When you disobey the coach, someone who has been through all the wars like Whalen has, then call her a bitch to her face, you need to take your medicine, not pout, take your ball & go elsewhere because your feelings are hurt. Likewise with Jasmine Powell whose response after getting benched for not following coach's orders during a game was to pout, then quit and transfer in the middle of the season. What a bunch of :bs: I see a lot of the same in some of the younger employees I've had here in the recent past. Some are very respectful, work hard and quickly understand what's expected without being having to be told all the time. Others think they're above all that, want to be told what to do so they have an out, (You didn't tell me to do that!) yet work at their own pace and be able to come and go as they please without communicating first. Otherwise it interferes with their social agenda. More :bs: In college sports, it's increasingly becoming "all about me" and the transfer portal only serves to perpetuate that kind of behavior. I fear college basketball may be transforming itself into a glorified extension of AAU ball or a minor league for the pro's. I can't stand watching the NBA (only the Hallmark Channel is worse) and only watched the WNBA when the Lynx had decent teams. If the trend continues, it'll leave a lot of fans like myself behind. I have better things to do in the twilight of my years than watch overpaid crybabies and spoiled brats.
-
Dotch.....I agree 100%. Part of the problem is Minnesota has excellent women's BB prospects. But they want to play at a winning program. Why are both SD and SDSU better than the Gophers???
Wait until players can now be paid to play college sports. Like you say.....Nothing more than a minor league NBA or NFL. I don't watch the NBA either. Not even the playoffs.
The only thing keeping me watching the NFL is that the salary cap keeps teams competitive. Don't know how much longer I'll keep watching the Twins if they can't win at least 80 games a year. Basically nothing but a minor league team for the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox etc.

It would be interesting sometime to talk to my neighbor Carlie Wagner to get her take when she's around. She's studying to be a nurse as I understand it after getting some kind of business degree at the U. See her every once in a while out running when she's home. The kind of shape she's in, looks like she could still be out there at The Barn playing! One of the things that impressed me most about Carlie was when Pam Borton was fired, she stuck it out with the hiring of Marlene Stollings. Marlene was an absolute battle axe when I watched her from courtside! After leaving MN, she got fired at Texas Tech for her and her staff being verbally abusive to their players & for questionable conditioning procedures. Borton had recruited Carlie as had Brenda Freese and several other blue blood programs. Carlie always wanted to play for the Gophers. She could've bailed and transferred out. She stayed loyal however and that spoke volumes (to me) about her character.
I mentioned Brenda Freese, the gal who initially put Gopher women's basketball on the map in the '01-'02 season, being named AP National Coach of the Year, before leaving for Maryland the following season. Recruited by Cheryl Littlejohn the previous season, Lindsay Whalen played for Freese, averaging 22.2 ppg during the '01 - '02 season. Freese left for Maryland and went on to develop one of the elite programs in the country, including 6 Big 10 championships, numerous Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight appearances and a national championship in 2006. Guess what? Suddenly she's got the same problem as Whalen has!
https://news.yahoo.com/maryland-women-basketball-sophomore-american-002400753.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall
-
Very good article about Maryland and women's BB in general. Sounds like a coaching problem when the best players are not returning to their home state team and one of the best programs in the country.
-
Not sure if it's all the coaches, but as much if not more spoiled athletes that think there above being told how to play. Then if they get put in place or there feelings hurt they go elsewhere.
Never heard of this 20 years ago.
-
That's because they couldn't transfer except down a division.
-
Brenda Freese is old school, now. When she first started she was new and exciting, getting the most enthusiasm out of not only her players but the fans as well. At that time at the U, the men's BB program under Dan Monson was floundering and fans were desperate for a winner. She had us packing The Barn, for women's BB for crissake! Unheard of! She was still a my way or the highway coach and she's stuck to her guns over the years. Pam Borton was that way to a lesser extent but did fairly well at recruiting MN kids. Too bad she ran afoul of class AAAA #1 jerk Norwood Teague as athletic director who wanted "his gal" from VCU in as women's BB coach. He also had some under the impression that fellow VCU men's BB coach Shaka Smart might be lured this direction. Instead we wound up with Little Richard & we all know how that went.
Some kids aren't responding to that kind of discipline anymore and now the transfer portal gives them carte blanche to do whatever they want should they perceive someone has wronged them or the grass is greener. 20 years ago when you transferred, you knew you needed to sit out a year before even thinking about playing. If you could by some odd chance prove a hardship of some sort, death or illness in the family for instance, you could get a waiver and play right away the next season. That was the exception though and not the rule. Now it's become a free for all. The parents bear a large degree of the responsibility. They're kids. Stop trying to be their friend and instead be a parent. Hold kids accountable. When/if that happens, maybe it can be fixed but I'm afraid the genie is out of the bottle. I'm not optimistic about the future of college basketball, men's or women's. On the flip side, it might mean spending more time outdoors and there's nothing wrong with that.
-
The question becomes.....
What is best for the NCAA
What is best for the college
What is best for the kid.
Aren't the kids people and not slaves? Don't they have the right to make decisions about themselves?
This transfer portal is great for the kids. Obviously not for the colleges.
Colleges have to get the right coach and the right kids and there should not be a problem with transfers of starters. I can see kids that are not playing wanting out. Shouldn't they have the right to do that? And not have to sit out a whole season?
-
These coaches don't suddenly overnight forget how to play basketball. Whalen is there for instate name recognition. If the players can't relate to her then she needs assistants to handle practice and in game moves. The problem with most sports these days is the inmates (players) want to run the asylum (programs)
Somebody, somewhere has to draw a line on this practice.
-
Looked for the Gopher & whoever they were playin ;)  game yday but it was only on ESPNU here yday, & that's NOT part of our cable pkg. :bonk: See it ended up 1-0, the Mn St goalie must be as good as they're sayin.
-
so I'm hearing Mankato took out the Gophers!!
-
Just wacked them. 5-1 including a empty netter. Denver vs Mankato for the championship.
-
 Thought I read where it was 1-0. :bonk: Were you able to watch it, db, & where did you find it?

ESPNU. Channel 788 on Midco up here in the tundra.
Yes the game was on last night. Rodents scored first then got ran over.
-
I heard Mn St had a really good team & was looking to check it out during the commercials elsewhere but ....................... we don't get that channel. :pouty:

i watched the first half of the first period then needed to go to bed. cant shake this damn head cold!!!!!! :surrender: :bs: that goal the gophers scored sure was a pretty one. :happy1:
yea mankato's, spelling right Mike!! :sleazy: :mooning: :rotflmao: goalie is really good, i heard he could possibly get 3 of the top hockey awards this year including the hobey!!!!!! it was also said there team is about the oldest in NCAA and not any if any are from minnesota. i'll still be pulling for them tomorrow!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:
-
I watched most of it until they were down 4 - 1. Was a good Wagon Train on last nite. :happy1: They looked flat-footed even in the 1st period and stayed that way. Was disappointed but hey, the way they played the first part of the season, I wouldn't have bet they'd get as far as they did. Wish they could get out of the Big 10 but that ain't gonna happen. Thanks fer nuthin' Donnie, ya terd! The best they can hope for is to get rid of that insipid Olympic-size sheet of ice and keep grinding.
-
If you are a stud high school hockey player why would you enroll at the U to have to play out of state? Who wants to take a trip to Ohio, Pennsylvania to play?
Stay and play in Minnesota for Duluth, Bemidji, Mankato, St. Cloud. Hell, go to North Dakota. The lack of intensity playing in the Big 10 hurts the Gophers plus every in state school wants to pound them more than anybody else. Which they have been doing.
-
I was just a stud in high school!!! :happy1: :sleazy: :smoking: :happy1: :moon:

Hey studdley, maybe it's something ya caught in high school that is causing you to not feel well lately.

No question about it. Not sorry I went to the U when I did because it opened a lot of doors for me, opportunities I wouldn't have had anywhere else in MN agriculture. But, even at the time I was there in the mid-70's & early 80's, it could be an intimidating place with attendance at 55,000, an ugly bureaucracy to deal with at Morrill Hall, and right in the middle of the Twin Cities. Can't imagine how some of the outstate kids might look at it now with all the crime and gun violence.
-
just read that 2 of the gophers running backs entered the portal to now...........thomas and irving??????/

With this portal fiasco (it's just a legal way to pay the players) the U should petition to join the MIAC in all sports.

At this point, why even pretend to make D1 athletes take classes?

I'm guessing the boys at Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Clemson don't spend much over 1 hour a day in any class that isn't teaching NFL.

it be really interesting to see how many of these athletic scholarship people actually walk out of college with an actual degree............ or even go back and get it after there playing days are over......1%.................

Hard to argue tho, their entry level NFL contract is more than I made in my life. Seems messed up but thats the way it is. I suppose if I had wanted to make a pile of dough I coulda went into farming.

Since he had played at Marquette prior to North Carolina will he have to sit out a year? Will he have 2 year of eligibility left?
-
Every indication is he'll be eligible due to a hardship situation for "family medical issues". Of course this is the NCAA we're talking about but with this wide open portal thing they've got going, I'd be surprised if he sat a year. As far as years of eligibility, should be two years minimum, provided he doesn't decide to go pro after one season. Some of the articles I saw stated he's the highest rated recruit (4 star McDonald's All American) since one and done Kris Humphries. 6'11" Garcia was lighting it up at NC before his concussion and leaving the team. Garcia, Battle & Fox in the front court? Me like! Now we need to find an experienced point guard who'd enjoy feeding those guys the ball. Add a quick shooting guard or two for good measure who'd like taking an outlet pass to the hole after a rebound by those 3. Still a bunch of guys looking at MN yet and that pick up certainly didn't hurt matters.
-
Ben Johnson landed a potential immediate impact point guard with Morehead State transfer Ta'Lon Cooper, who committed to the Gophers on Wednesday.
The 6-4, 190-pound South Carolina native averaged 9.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and ranked seventh in Division I with 5.9 assists per game. The All-Ohio Valley Conference first team selection had four games with double figures in assists and his 202 assists led the OVC and ranked second in team history.

Was a nice pick up. Shooting guards up next... :coffee:

Been out for a week or so. All about money. Big Ten now has coverage in second largest market in Los Angeles. Now they just need to get Notre Dame and the Chicago market.
