Yeah I save some for seed every year.  Those giant genetics I have to keep around.  When one potatoes makes enough fries for a family of four its a winner. :happy1:

I have not and I never get in much of a hurry.  I'll plant them this weekend or the next or the next.  It never seems to matter around here.  I don't think I'm going to plant as many this year.  Anyone need seed potatoes  ;)

Corny it's 23 horse Massey Ferguson.   It's my second one.   First one was 10 years old and not one problem.   This one I got last summer with the drive over mower deck.   The snow blower is still from the first machine.   I personally know of 6 guys with this exact machine and not one problem.   This I know because my dad is the guy they call to fix their stuff.  Changing fluids is a cake walk.

got the garden weeded, cans off all the plants, replanted some green beans, carrots and kalarabi.

the green beans where an heirloom and half the bag of seeds were broken and crushed. pretty disappointed in them. I amy not have many beans this year which sucks. I can or pickle most of them.

Just finished vegetable garden planting today. Put nitrogen on and tilled everything as the lambsquarter and waterhemp were starting to get ugly. My leftover sweet corn seed didn't pan out so well so had a do-over with some fresh seed. Planted another area to sweet corn as well since I had plenty of seed and don't want to carry over any more than necessary. Also stuck in a couple rows of string beans about 30' long so that should give the bunnies something to nosh. Will have to start carrying my blunderbuss.  :fudd: Tomatoes are really starting to hit their stride and the muskmelons seemed to appreciate the weeding I gave them. Would be nice to get some good ones again for a change.

Keeping it cool yet above freezing is never a bad idea. This seed also had a heavy dose of neonicotinoid seed treatment (imadacloprid) on it which may not have helped. Tingles a little if you get it on your fingers. At least I don't have crabs though! 😎 Usually I remember to get new stuff from the local seed dealer but I usually wait until all his paying customers are taken care of first. They had Ambrosia, a 75 day bicolor SE so got that. Had it 10 years ago probably and it was decent.

Sucks for sure.  I haven't had time to tend the gardens since planting them.  I was kind of hoping for hail to trash the weeds.  I have time today so I plan to have a look see and tackle the weeds.  Wish me luck, i'm going in......

There are some plants in there after all.  I was too embarrassed to take a before picture.  I had to decide if would let the weeds or deer have there way with this garden.  I can't do much about the deer but I could pull the weeds.  It took a while but maybe I salvaged some plants from the weeds.

We finally got our big garden all in yesterday, a couple of weeks later then usual but we did miss out on the big storm we had here so it may have worked out for the best. Still have the gutter garden to put in, this weekend, but stuff grown in there will be harvested before the stuff planted in the ground. You guys down south are always so much farther ahead of us Northern guys! :doah:

With all these weeds, there just has to be some garden plants in there.

This is a before picture of my pumpkin, gourds, and squash patch.  I know they are in there because
I put them there.

Several long hot hours later my arms are like rubber but the plants emerged.  Victory was mine.

I am starting to do the Corny.  I've been picking all the flowers before they bloom and smack up the leaves a bit with a rake.  I did smash my first potatoe bugs yesterday on one plant.  I didn't see any others.

Got your green beans planted Monday before the rain glenn. Won't reb be proud? Anyway, if the weather stays warm and we continue getting timely rains, it may finally be worth taking a photo or two. Such a weedy mess and some holes in the vine crop area where old seed and cucumber beetles took their toll. Bastages!

Got cukes coming out my ears. Almost got enough regular pickles for a couple batches of dill pickles. Peppers are coming along nicely, many already picked. Zucchini....not so much....plants are huge, but not producing. Lost one tomato plant to some blight or something....plants next to it are producing well.

That's pretty impressive to have cukes already. Ours are flowering right along now but it will be a few weeks probably. Muskmelons look pretty decent but it'll be September probably. Jalapenos setting well as are the green zucchini. Yellow one not so much. Garden overall is liking this heat and rain thing. Gets to be mid-month and hopefully I can start planting some fall radishes, salad greens and snap peas. Got some nooks and crannies that should work well for that. Not much a guy can do right now other than gawk at it though. One giant mass of sticky black poo! :bonk:

Dotch, a really good friend of the family has a huge green house, so I  have a little jump start on the cukes, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. And they live less than a mile from the ranch. Pretty convenient.
I do a lot of pickles, so it helps a great deal on production.  :happy1:

Ya HD, I wasn't able to get a lot of my stuff planted in flats in the greenhouse like I have in years past. Makes a big difference. The vine crops with the exception of the zucchini and one watermelon were all direct seeded. The 'maters and peppers were transplants, crippled packs (3 instead of 4 in a pack deals) from the greenhouse the wife works for. They look good and the price was right.  :happy1:

I've found my gardening peaks about the time I plant the seeds.  I'm so new to this that it's a trial and error thing.  Last summer I was a radish king and now I'm all about snow peas.  There's a lot of crop failure but a ton of hope.  Maybe my best plan is for the squash I planted at the cabin.  Just kind of leave it alone and if one grows I will enjoy it with some grouse breast in the Fall.

put a deer stand near it, that usually keeps them away.  Heck, hang a shirt you've worn out there.  It may keep them away and/or make them use to your scent and associate it with good vittles and come deer season they will come running to get shot!  Probably a billion dollar idea I just gave away.

Our cukes are just starting to climb on the gate we put by them.  Maybe the vine is 3' long.  Tomatoes may be 2.5' tall Max.  Like I said there are little ones on them so that is positive.  The peppers are small too.  But all look healthy.  We had so much rain.  We haven't watered since we planted things and the ground is still moist.  This hot weather may kick start them.  We have lots of time yet.   :happy1:

Somewhat the same here.  I moved things around in the garden this year.  Sort of like a farmer rotating the corps.  Cukes are small and haven't really spread out yet.  Don't know why.  Some tomatoes are going strong but some seem stunted. Not sure if it's the new area they are in or just the way it goes sometime.

Green beans starting to really roar. Good thing there's no shortage of takers. Even people wanting zucchini. Unheard of! May even have to sell to the highest bidder. Right now if they'd mow my lawn they could have 'em. Little do they know it's a 5 - 6 hour process. 'maters are starting to come back online. Cloudy wet weather doesn't seem to be to their liking. August has started out drier so we'll see how they do. Gotta find some time and seed some fall garden too now it's dried enough to do it. Fall greens, peas and radishes are the bomb! (c'mon LL, I know yer out there!)  ;)

Was happy to pick the first of what I hope is many muskmelons last night. Have had good luck some years and not so good luck other years with them so will be interesting to see how it tastes. Planted snap peas as well as both winter and spring type radishes ahead of the rain. Plenty of moisture already so we should be set without too much more for a while.

My garden is going strong. August is the best month if you are a gardener. Finished my second batch of corn. Number 3 should start in a few days. Green beans are done. What's left will be for next years seed. Picked the first Sun Jewel melons today. Lots of Tomatoes for canning. Peppers are really slow this year for me. Not enough heat I guess. Way to many zucchini as usual.

Same here. Tomatoes are rolling along, the string beans, zucchini, and cukes ditto. 1st sweet corn of the year. Ambrosia, a 75 day bicolor SE, planted June 12th. It's young but ready to eat after only 64 days. It has been a warm summer overall with ample rainfall in generally measured amounts. About 50 measurable rainfall events since the last week in March. Radishes planted August 11th before the rain were emerging already on the 14th. Peas have germinated. but could use some help from the forecast rain tomorrow to emerge. The rain on the 12th was a pounder so there is a crust.

Still have some string beans to pick yet but the mosquitoes are really dampening my enthusiasm to pick them. I did get some mosquito nets that are reasonably helpful. Squash vines are toast so may as pick 'em, save a few to eat fresh and freeze the rest. Otherwise I suspect they aren't going to keep as wet as it's been. Muskmelon crop was a bust. Wet weather = no flavor. Sheep seem to like them however. Still some tomatoes yet but this will be their last hurrah methinks. The plants will likely stay in the ground though as muddy as it is after the latest monsoon.

Whacked down the sweet 100 'mater plant this afternoon. Early Girl is still putting out fruit, so I'll hold off 'til the 1st frost, and wrap up all the green ones to ripen downstairs. Now, if I could fin=d someone blowing out Turfbuiler for $9 a bag, I'd be happy. Happens every Fall; just have to catch it, as it's gone in a day usually.

Hauled in all the pumpkins, gourds, and squash.  Mowed down what was left and the "pumpkin hill" is ready for winter.  Still have some taters to dig and then it's done for the year.  The deer had a good feast this year.

Not sure what you mean smurf..... I  feed my plants a lot of crap and they produce into the fall
Cukes just need fertilizer, they suck a lot out of the ground. If it ain't there, they just die off.
I just took this pic today, and picked 3 more. Yup, they are coming to the end....but only if we get a frost.

So first what do you use for fertilizer? My cukes were toast by mid August. I know they like water to. Was just thinking you may have planted at different times???

Mine are still producing......well that was until I mowed them all over last night.  Now the only thing left is to dig the taters and till.  I usually leave the taters in the ground as long as I can.  Fertilizer I get from a turkey barn or I bring in a soil sample to the local plant and they mix me up what I need.

G, i use to get manure/fertilizer from a turkey farm to but that appeared to have more by products then the good stuff so i quit using it. use to get cow dung but wholly hannah da weeds.

this year i am going to put all my maple leaves in these big contractor bags, add some water and used coffee grounds,  tie them shut and let them do the compost pile in a bag thing and spread in the spring!!!!!!

Cut down the early girl tomato plant a bit ago...picked 24 green ones, now wrapped in newspaper and put in a box downstairs to ripen slowly. Total early girls off one plant: 75!  And every single one was blemish free....darned good year, for getting such a late start.  ;D

Checked on some of the green ones today that I wrapped and put away.....half are nice and ripe! Tastes like they just came off the vine; no discernible difference in on-the-plant ripening.  And to think years ago I didn't think you could do this, and threw the green ones away in the Fall.  :doah:

Yes, I did make some once. Just dipped 'em in flour and some seasoning, and into an oiled pan. Don't know if I did it right, but they were just OK. It was probably my method.

Usually I pickle all my late season green tomatoes....this year I had none that didn't ripen in time.  :doah:

Fried green tomatoes are ok, but if I  have even more than I want to pickle...I deep fry um.

Well gents the garden is done and the taters are dug.  I cut it down to 3 rows this year instead of 5 and planted half Yukon and half red.   Got a bunch of the same monsters as always.

This has been a great fall to garden. I am still eating Romaine lettuce, beets, kohlrabi, daikons, and broccoli.Looks like another warm week ahead. This has to be the longest gardening season I've seen here in 35 yrs. Love it. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:
