Question: I have a person who contacted me about putting in a garden. She wants to rent a spot maybe 40' x 100' or less. I would provide water and the dirt. They would handle prep, planting, weeding & harvest.
Any idea of a fair price for the ground & water for a season. Any downside?

just put in my last seed order today from Twilley Seeds. They have smaller seed packets for good prices. Would rather order new seeds every year if possible. I don't want a bulging packet where they don't get planted for 3-4 years. Also the same from Pinetree seeds.
Well I should rephrase. I still will be getting some trial seed from NDSU's extension service.
If anyone is interested, They are always looking for more testers. Most are from ND. But there are 29 testers from MInn. Also from Pennsylvania, Colorado, Sask. and Manitoba.

My brother starts his tomatoes from seed. I just don't have the space to do it. :confused: and he gets a certain type of seeds of course through Amazon. :pouty:

so, those that garden, what do you guys do in the form of fertilizer??? back in the day i'd get either cow manure or turkey manure. the cow manure had wayyyy to many weeds and the turkey manure was to the point it was a whole lot of other things then manure. so i quit using that.
so lately i've been alternating 10-10-10 or this Milorganite. i also throw all my potato peelings, banana peelings coffee grounds.....about anything biodegradable in there also. i also every fall throw a good amount of maple leaves and mulch them up.
i feel the need to do something different..........so i never ever thought i'd actually go buy like composted manure, but thinking i'm going that route this year............any suggestions?? i want to try something different.

I use bags of Composted Manure all the time. But not in my big garden. Cost to much. I use it in flower beds, fruit beds and my elevated garden in my yard. Other wise I use 10/10/10 or 12/12/12. spread over the garden and then again to side dress corn, tomatoes, onions peppers at the right time.
I also till in 4-6 inches of leaves every fall. Plus all my grass clippings from the summer and used for mulch.
The only thing different from above are my Blueberry plants. They get Miracle Grow for acid loving plants.

Seriously, I do load up numerous pails, bags, boxes, trailers and pickups full of sheep poo over the course of a year. I'll even bring a spreader full if it isn't too far away especially if the lady is hot! :hubba: I've got everything from aged and/or composted pack to the non-composted fresh pack that's pretty lively. I won't sell or give that to people for the present year's garden however. Chances of exposure to listeria are increased, one of the reasons they frown on it if growing canning crops like peas or string beans. Might be OK if you're establishing a garden area one year, working it in and gardening it the next. Otherwise the fresh pack belongs on ground to be planted into corn and soybeans.

Seems to be all about the same.....I buy it at Menards, Home Depot, or Lowes. Whichever is cheaper.

the other day i wandered threw the garden center at menards, i did see some composted manure....figured it was to early to pick it up. and i really didnt pay much attention to what back end it came out of! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: that area wasnt stocked all that well yet either.
they seem to be doing the continiuous 11% off thing again, i'll wait till i got a longer menards list to pick up 2-3 bags!!!!!! :happy1:

Planted a couple 10'+ rows of radishes tonite before we did chores. The small garden has some of the most bizarre soil I deal with. It's a combo of some black dirt the contractor used when installing the septic system (garden is over the top & around the tank), numerous skidsteer bucket loads of sheep chit, ashes, and the annual dumping of Mrs. Cheviot's planters and pots, containing leftover Osmocote fertilizer, perlite, peat moss and lord knows what else. It dries off fast on top but retains the moisture well throughout the growing season. I was shocked when I got the soil test back last fall. Likely due to the ashes, that pH at 7.6 is in Ken W's territory! :scratch: Plenty of soil fertility otherwise and the pH being a little on the higher side doesn't seem to matter regardless of what we plant. Everything does fairly well.

Think I might start some indoor farmin soon. Momma grabbed one of them cheap 50 cell starters that'll fit under the light. No peppers or maters just lettuce, green onion and perhaps carrots. I do have seeds for string less beans ( pole) , squash, and zucchini ( which the store bought plants last year had lots of rot) but might wait a bit on those.

took a walkabout the property this morning. sure is a beauty of a day so far. :happy1: cleaned up a bunch of black walnut stems. noticed a few new growths in my wifes hostas, and her ?????? :doah: :confused: damn nabit cant think of the name now.anyway there flowers. :nerd:
the grass is slowly greening up, my winter onions are also looking a little greener every day. so no life in the horseradish or rubarb. there is still frost along the garden where the neighbors fence blocks the sun. betting the rain coming will move things along!!!!1

So what do you guys do with your rhubarb plants?
Mine are just starting to poke up now, and have never done anything with them.....and every year....they bolt.
Do you clean up the dead leaves, fertilizer, chop them off in the fall?
Not like I really use it for anything.... but it always turns to crap...

What do we do with our rhubarb plants? When July comes we stop harvesting and let them go aside from the bolting. We try to cut those bolts when they show up as it pulls nutrients and energy away from the rootstock in order to produce seed. We have Canada Red and an unspecified older green variety. The green variety bolts more easily than the red at our place. It gets tougher and woody more quickly so we're not as fond of that.
We leave the dead leaves in the fall when it goes dormant for the winter and remove it in the spring once it dries out a little more. Amazing how many ladybugs use that leaf litter in our small garden. We fertilized it heavily before establishment but it looks like it could use some well rotted manure worked in around a couple of the plants. They aren't as vigorous as they were a few years ago. It's that or move them which is a PITA. We have one plant that established itself from seed a couple years ago where we've been planting cannas. That area gets manure annually and so far that plant is roaring out of the blocks ahead of the rest. It appears to be a red type too so not exactly sure how that happened.
On another note, checked tonite & our radishes planted March 9th are starting to emerge! I almost wet myself... :doah:

Pretty much what Dotch said about the rubarb. I try to use as much as possible, give it way. Anything left before it gets woody I wash off, cut up and freeze it. A rubarb cake tastes pretty good jan- feb. :happy1:

My Rhubarb is coming up. Always the first to show new growth in the spring. Dotch is right on as to how to treat it.
My wife makes the best rhubarb tort. My whole family loves it. She also makes strawberry/rhubarb jelly and pie.

Yes.....you might be early. Depends on when you transplant into the garden. Vine crops should be started 4 weeks before last frost date. They should not have more than 2 true leaves. If they are to big, they usually just sit there and don't grow. I always start my squash, cantaloupe, watermelons, and cucumbers May 1 and plant into the garden June 1. Put row covers over them to get extra heat.

I do similar except onions. I ALWAYS plant onion plants not sets. I really like raw sweet onions on HD, Sausage, Tacos, and Hamb. My philosophy has always been...."If you peel an onion and it makes you cry....Don't eat it raw." Cooked is OK.
So I buy bundles of sweet onion plants.....Candy or Wala Wala, Sweet Spanish, Alsa Craig, or Paterson......usually 50 to 75 plants in a bundle. They are usually grown from seed over winter in Texas.

I tried those for about 3-4 years. Had one really good crop. Even my sets are a crap shoot every year. Sometimes I have a great onion season, next year not so much. :rolleyes: :scratch:

Not sure, I always rotate where I plant things. Use a hoe, make a trench about 2 inches deep, plant, cover, weed and water as needed.

OK.....onions have special needs to get to size up. First, they start to make bulbs when we have the longest daylight....early to mid July. At that time....the larger the top green stems are.....the larger the bulb will be.
To get the largest stems.....they have to be planted the earliest possible. Onions are tough. They will grow even if it snows. Onions are biennial. Grow the plant the first year and then start growing again the next year to produce seeds on top.
I have even planted them along the edge of grass and garden. Kneeling down on the grass and sticking them in the ground before it can be tilled. I don't do that anymore. They should be the first thing you plant. Side dress them with fertilizer early July when they start to grow bulbs.
If you are buying sets.....get the smallest ones you can find. Buying in bulk is the best. You can pick out the smallest ones. If they are to large.....they will think it is their second season in the ground and grow seed pods on top. Won't keep. Also if you are buying bulk by the pound....you get the most by picking out the smallest ones.
Pull them in mid August when they are full size and the tops are bending down. Grab a bunch and tie them up with twine with a loop on the end. Hand on a nail in the garage until it gets to cold to keep them in the garage.

Yea I buy the sets by bulk and they are usually small. The biggest ones in the bulk are about the size of a really small bobber, less then a half inch.
Maybe I need to add a little extra fertilizer???

Broke my own rules and covered the crocuses last nite, something I've never done. Took a look at them and they were just about ready to open. There are more of them too than I thought. They've spread around the bed, apparently by seed. I plan to move them this fall into the bed where I've planted the daffodils & other miscellaneous bulbs. Also covered the biggest hill of rhubarb with a 2 bushel basket. May cover the rest with blankets to reduce the leaf injury. Pruned fruit trees last nite until dark. Froze my @$$ off. Forecast low tonite is supposed to be in the mid-teens. Think I'll forego that until it's warmer. :coffee:

Uncovered the daffodils, crocuses and rhubarb yesterday. All escaped the 15 degree low unscathed. It did toast some of the leaves on the iris but left the radishes alone. Didn't cover them. Figured there might be a little time to replant yet. :cool:

Big changes for us with the gardening this year. I'm headed towards back surgery, so bending over to work a garden's out of question. Gonna get one of those elevated gatden carts and put 4 tomato plants, some lettube and onions in it, and a box to put on the deck railing for some herbs, and rhat,s gonna be it.

Canada Red has been a longtime favorite rhubarb here. We prefer it to the old fashioned green types. It's hardy to zone 3 so it should work. Not as sure on the asparagus as our patch burned out years ago when it became too shaded. I need to re-establish one so am in need of some guidance on that one meself. Maybe KEN W can chime in on it.

the rubarb we got was from my wifes sister. its basiclly red and work for us. Coopy......if you know someone who has rubarb already
maybe they can split it and give you some. its how we got ours started.
the aspargus i planted i bought from Jungs. i believe its called Martha Washington. they where 2 year old roots i believe. if my memory serves me i believe the directions say to leave them, or not harvest that first year. but these are doing really well.

I plant radishes, lettuce, carrots, beets, onions, green beans & peas out of them as well.....
I got a separate garden for pepper and tomato.

I like the Purple Passion asparagus we have. I think we also have the Jersey Supreme and the Martha Washington I think. They are l good. I dug a 12 inch deep trench with a tile spade and covered the crowns with about 5 inches of soil. As they grew I kept putting more dirt on them. We have two rows about 12 feet long, way more than enough. I bet asparagus would really like some of that rotted sheep manure mixed with the soil too!

I did some selective harvesting the second year and full harvest after that. After July 1 we let it fern out. I just love the stuff!

Unless it's a big area I'd just try & rake it to see if there's anything green underneath, then hope for some rain. When I worked on the golf course I did that a lot on the tees & greens, would lightly brush in a little topdressing a couple times too. Within a week or so it'd usually come back.

Got thru pruning our production fruit trees and did the major surgery on the crabapples. More important to get the face snappers, eye gougers, headphone grabbers and glasses snatchers out of the way first. I'll do the cosmetic stuff later if there's time. The daffodils are opening this a.m. If it gets to 80 like they're talking, they should be in full bloom by this evening.

I did that with our lilac bush. Cut out all of the big stumps so it is new shorter stuff. Looks a lot nicer. Shorter too. Hope we still get flowers.

Those cap removers and scalp scarifiers are the bane of my lawn mowing existence. Never felt a bit of remorse after cutting a larger than anticipated limb in order to make lawn mowing less hazardous. I do say little prayer sometimes though. It goes: "Take that, you SOB!" :angry:
Good question on the delete post thing. Think I've been able to delete the content using the modify button. Then there's a blank post which in my case everyone just assumes I've gone a 15 rounder with the juniper berry extract so they expect it. :tequila;

I worked at Green Lee Golf Course in Alberts Leaf in 71 and 72. Loved doing it. Planned on going to school for it. My buddy did and the pay was lousy even at very big fancy courses across the country.

I worked summers because I was teaching the rest of the year. Loved that outside work. I started many flowers at home for the flower beds at the course. Rode a zero turning radius moor in the rough. That thing was awesome.

Pretty much my own boss back then but it was usually fairways or greens for me. Most of our equipment was pretty old & beat up, so it usually took some TLC. Worked a few summers with 1 of our HS's teachers/golf coach too, a good guy & we got along great.

Did a quick bomb session after chores in the gardens last nite. Trenched and worked manure with a little urea in around the rhubarb. Took the dead residue off the peonies and removed the grass clippings/leaf mat from the lilies of the valley. Daffodils were out in full force this a.m. so figured before the wind beats the snot out of them I'd snap a photo. Dug them up at Mom's last October and planted the bulbs in a hurry at our place. Grateful to have some of them bloom. Reminds me of her and her love of gardening.

Finally supposed to get some rain tomorrow. I would guess some of you south of here have gotten some rain yesterday and today. My wife's daffodils are just coming up. Today I cleaned the leaves out of the blueberries raspberries and asparagus. Haven't uncovered the strawberries yet. Don't want them blooming and then get frost.
Juneberries are always first to leaf out. looking good.

Had this show up over the past week or so. Checked it out and appears to be what's known as a fairy ring. Caused by some type(s) of fungi, some create an almost perfect circle of dead grass while others like this one cause the grass to grow more profusely. My 1st thought was aliens then decided it was more likely sasquatch pee! :shocked:

Those things are not easy to get rid of. The ones I've seen are only a couple feet across. Those are huge. If I remember right.....I dug them out and replaced the soil. Can't do that with those.

Doing a little reading, some of the rings can develop puffball mushrooms. Be interesting to watch anyway. Fortunately this is an area of the yard that's relatively hidden. One of my pear trees (Patten I think) is in the ring itself. Talking to a plant path guy, he said sometimes fairy rings may be related to trees growing there, sometimes hundreds of years ago. I have some old aerial photos of the building site but have to look to see if they show that part of the yard.

Lake was down almost a foot when we put the dock in on 4/6. Three days of steady rain the end of that week & some snow the next week brought it back up 10-12 " by the following weekend, 4/16.

Indeed I am. That's an extremely dry winter no matter how you slice it.
We had an interesting winter here as well. Snowfall at the ranch for the winter if you include the 9" we received in October, has amounted to 49.8". The normal for the SROC at Waseca is 52.8" so not that far off the pace. We've had only trace amounts of snow in April thus far and only .56" of precip total for the month. Normal at the SROC for April is 3.21" with 2.7" of snowfall being typical. The normal October thru April precip at the SROC is 14.26". Thus far at the ranch it's totalled 8.61". Luckily we went into fall with a relatively full moisture profile with abundant precip falling in August. This drier signature had its beginnings here in Sept. Something unique about the winter here was that even though the snow tended to be drier than normal, much of the water from the snowmelt went into the ground as it thawed and re-froze much of the winter. Frost depth reached its peak in late February at 17" and was gone by mid-March. The vast majority of the 2.63" of precip we got in March was stored in the soil. Our soil moisture is actually adequate as a result in spite of what the data might indicate. We will definitely need some rain hopefully by June or July at the latest depending somewhat upon what temps do.
I enjoy looking at the info on the link below. The monthly and 3 month forecasts are tenuous at best. They completely blew the February predictions for instance. However, the drought monitor does take a look at present conditions so pretty hard to screw that up. :rotflmao:

My faith in FF has been dwindling for some time. Since they sold out & the guy running the show was/is a former WalMart guy, the WalMart-ization of the stores continues. Went there to get a replacement outdoor fixture for the garage a week ago. I really didn't feel like driving to Mankato to Menards where we got the original. I got a replacement at FF 6 or 7 years ago that while not identical, you'd really have to look hard to notice. Got there & they had nothing remotely resembling it. Also, I needed to get some work socks. Been getting gray work socks there for years. Again, diddly. I guess if no one is working they don't need work socks! :rolleyes: Also checked their garden center for a Honey Gold apple tree. Zero. Zip. Nada. Very little in the garden center in general in spite of the huge sign saying they were open. Few trees other than stuff I already have. Got home & there was a letter saying they were changing their rewards program. No longer do you get a $25 gift card periodically, now you have a tally or some such nonsense to keep track of. We've been taking more of our farm related business to Bomgaars. If FF keeps it up they may just as well be known as Fleet. Fleet makes enemas so it'd be fitting... :rotflmao:

I may make a trip to Turtle Creek Nursery this weekend roony so will let you know if they have any Honeygolds. Delbert is 100% correctamundo on those. My Dad liked yellow apples although I never determined what the yellow apple really was he had planted at home. Harvest apple he called it. :scratch:
Purchased this unit yesterday so we'll see how it pans out. Blew my 25+ year old tiller up last spring so limped along in the small garden in the meantime. Guy I bought this from used it one year to establish his lawn in Owatonna then got a job in Hawaii. Wondered why the phone no. was an 808 area code. Tiller had been stored in the garage for ~13 years. Had been looking for one with a Briggs or a Kohler but most of them were several hours drive. Then this one showed up close to home. May need some carb cleaning but we'll start out with some Sea Foam to see what that does for it.

I see it has Counter Rotating Tines. Does that mean you have to push it or it will come back at you and not go forward?

I believe on this one the only way the tines will engage is when the transmission is in forward. Can also run it in forward, reverse or neutral without the tines engaged. If it dries off the next couple days I'll fire it up & put it through its paces. Turns out its the same model my brother had. Said it worked well.
BTW roony, I stopped at Turtle Creek to look for a Honeygold apple tree. No have. Also stopped back at FF. Nothing there either. May have to check a few other spots to see if they're in existence or if I have to go to ordering online, something I've had mixed success with. :scratch:

Radishes planted March 9th have finally started to act like radishes. Funny what a little warmer weather will do. No idea if they'll pan out but hey experimentation is half the fun at least that's what I always told my girlfriends... :evil:
Applied glyphosate burndown on the new garden area yesterday. Wait until the weekend to mow off the grass then till it up. Never in a hurry to get garden in out here in the wide open spaces. Not unusual to see a frost in late May or even the first week in June. Doesn't usually kill stuff but doesn't do it any favors either. Since we like to grow things a smurf won't eat such as squash, it's nice to give them the best odds of making it. :happy1:
Also yesterday, cleaned off the residue from last year's morning glories, a lot of ropy biomass. Worked the soil a bit and firmed the seed bed. They should reseed nicely. Also weeded the lilies of the valley. Wild buckwheat and chickweed can make a mess in there later on if you don't. Quite a few of them get picked for use in floral design altho you'd never know it.

:happy1: the type of refrigerator pickles i make i use cucumbers at cut them in spears, i use 2 gallon jars for them. only type of jar big/long enough for them.
my pickled fish i just use quart jars with the normal rings and lids.

On the back road to Owatonna the ditch hunters were out looking for apser grass this a.m. There used to be some large fields thru there on Steele Co. 7 until the canning co. in Owatonna stopped raising it. Stopped raising pumpkins too. Life hasn't been the same ever since. :confused:
I saw they had about a half dozen SnowSweet apple trees at FF. No Honeygold however. Lots of Haralson & Haralred too. Was tempted to add another SnowSweet here but think I'll save my shekels for now. FF is still good for something. Paid $2.58 for gas there with my coupon. :happy1:

Not really garden but didn't want to start a new thread. :scratch: this tree outgrew the lawn edging so I remodeled. Took the edging out and put these granite rock corrings in place of edging. Thought it turned out pretty good. Got 1 more tree I'm doing this too

Got most of the garden planted but still need a couple more jalapenos and wait for the pole pickles to come out. I did end up planting from seed some stringless pole beans, hopefully they take..

Wife just returned from St. Charles & some of the Amish places. Said her & her gal pal must've hit a dozen greenhouses. Fairly reasonable prices there & she should know having worked greenhouse retail as many years as she did. She got me some yellow pear tomatoes & a yellow canna along with a bunch of other stuff I can't remember the names of. Will probably know by the time I'm done planting all of them. Probably won't be the proper name either... :evil:

In the pole varieties, I’ve done Kentucky wonders and Purple Pods. Purple Pods is an old fashioned variety that is easy to pick because they are readily seen, being bright purple. Turn green when you cook them. Some of the newer varieties are more “stringless”. I think they also are more tender and have a milder flavor.

roony also has pear trees, some of the same ones I do and at least one other one I think so feel free to chime in Art. I have a Patten & a Parker. I think the Patten is more the pollinator here. These are standard size trees. They were ~6'-7' tall when I got them prolly 8-10 years ago. They're over 15' tall now. They had some Ure's at FF & I darn near bit but I wasn't sure about how they'd work here. Turns out they'd be fine but when I went back there, they were gone, of course. :doah:

My pear trees are Luscious, Gourmet, and the other one is either a Patten or a Parker. I highly recommend the Luscious. It and the Gourmet need a pollinator like the Patten or Parker. These are all standard trees and they get large. Pick them before they get completely ripe.

About the only two listed on the U of M list that might survive there are Golden Spice and Ure. Some folks south of town have a Golden Spice tree. It bears heavily some years and they give a bunch away when it does. They're small but tasty. Don't last long so have to eat them fast. Golden Spice is a pollinator for Ure in their listing. Sure you've seen this ken but posting it for others who might be interested in pears.

Supposed to be HOT next week.....mid to upper 80's No rain here. Time to get most of my garden in except tomatoes and peppers and melons. Good planting weather. Started dethatching my lawn today.....finishing tomorrow.
Went crappie fishing today with my brother. caught around 50. Crappies for supper.

Frost is possible till the end of the month. My plants of those 3 can still stay in my greenhouse for another 2 weeks or so. Although supposed to be mid 80's for a few days. I am just planting potatoes, carrots, spinach, beets. Plus my broccoli, cauliflower, romaine, pak choi, kohlrabies, basil, parsley are in the greenhouse and now ready to go in the ground today.

Got the new garden area tilled up last night. Purty dry altho we do have water access so at least for transplants, it'll work. Wasn't sure how big it was so measured it. It's 17' x 100'. One thing's for sure: I must've picked the rockiest spot on the farm! Be nice to get a rain so I can see them & pick them up. May move the pasture fence & widen it so I pick up some of the better soil towards the west end. One good thing, it hasn't been in crop or garden for over 30 years. Disease pressure should be pretty light. Wireworms might be my main concern but I'm ready for them.

I have a couple of plastic barrels. I see people make stands for them after they cut them in half for a raised garden. I may do that. Anyone here do that? I will cut them the long way. You can also cut them in half so each is a round raised garden.

Just about the time I thought they were going to bolt, the March 9th planted radishes come thru. They're interesting to eat. Little flamethrowers with a sweet aftertaste. More like the fall radishes I've raised only smaller. :cool:

I could put thicker cedar in the bottom, but I'm cheap (not as cheap as you though)
I like to change out the dirt every so often anyways, so it works out well. And, it saves on my back.

yesterday i spent time in the garden pulling weeds and pickin rocks. noticed the cukes, green beans and a few strands of carrots popped out of the ground. :happy1: :happy1: so i finished putting up the fence. dont want bunnies chewing that stuff off when i'm gone. and no more, i hope dog tearing up the garden. :pouty:
after i got done with the fence, i decided to work with shadow with the training dummy..........and of course the first throw, he takes this big oh bot gotta go get it spin, runs right into the fence, and i mean hard...... :confused: so some minor repair work needs to be done. but the look on him when he hit that fence was pretty funny!!!! :rotflmao:

yep, I actually just did one a bit ago. I found where it was shooting out from a rubarb stem, broke it off and threw it in the yard waste bin

Yup, when I see them start to bolt I cut that stem off. Otherwise the plant spends more energy on seed production than it does on producing stems. Our old fashioned green rhubarb tends to bolt more easily than the red variety.

Our Canada red rhubarb has gone bonkers with the addition of the manure earlier this spring, heat & rainfall. The last pie Mrs. Cheviot made is just tremendous.
Met the owner of the orchard to the north of us a few miles. Super nice guy. He was at the Arik Matson benefit. Mentioned my Haralson tree was barren this year & he said the same thing I'd read about thinning them when they're loaded like last year to coax them to bear more evenly year to year. Said they'll have plenty of Haralson's. Have lived here 37 years and haven't been to the orchard so will have to make a trip in the Stude this fall. Growing up in SE MN, I enjoyed going to the various orchards that were nearby so am looking forward to it.
& roony, I asked if he had any Honeygold apples. Nope, he said, they had to give them up. Claimed they're too hard to process without damaging them. Thin skinned and bruise too easily. I was wondering why I don't recall seeing them in the store... :scratch:

Canna lilies anyone. I seem to remember someone here wanting to try growing some canna lilies. I have two boxes of bulbs, one with red and one with green. Boxes are about 1 foot cube. These will be tossed if I don't find someone who wants them.
These are growing by a 6 foot fence. All they need is a little fertilizer and water.

Yup, altho you can leave them. They just don't come back! :rotflmao: I've got boxes of them too but I'm only gonna plant so many of them. I wouldn't mind having some of the red leaved ones deadeye but the Mrs. already got me a potted yellow flowered one. Figure I'll try to increase that variety over the next several years. The canna patch could end up looking like KATCHUP & mustard someday!
The wife also gave me a variegated morning glory to plant once it gets this frost notion out of its system. Be interesting to see how it does. :scratch:

I usually dig half of what I planted and then in spring plant half of those I dug. The rest I give away or toss if no one wants them. I just put them in a cardboard box layered with some news paper and store in the furnace room. It's probably 65+ all winter but they like it there. They like full sun and competition with something like a fence, wall or sunflowers. This makes them grow taller.

That's one I have never grown. I have found that the best for me have been the round white ones. Like Hailstone, White Globe, Snow Ball and a few others. They always seem to be mild. Others can get "hot." I also really like the fall grown Daikons. They always seem to be Huge and mild.
When I eat some of the hot ones, my wife complains because I am walking around the house burping radishes. :sleazy: :sleazy:

The wife and I took a trip around the neighborhood today and stopped at deadeye’s to BS for a bit and pick up some of those cannas. I had to get the wife out of there though as he has it to nice. I could see the ideas rolling through her mind.....rock walkway and a sprinkler system for the garden to name a few. Then we tracked over to HD’s to shoot the breeze until about 3pm. We were going to head to Costco but found out it was closed. We did see an out of the way green house so the wife drug me up there. She bought a few more tomato plants and a different variety of pickles. Besides having to show my Dukes of Hazard driving skills to miss a deer and some winner trying to pass coming around a corner it was a great day.

kinda figured as much. i did it last year...just gotta get out there more often. that ground is pretty hard right now, i'll wait till after it rains......need to get the root or your wasting your time.

I had quack grass get into a 20'x20' vegetable garden, so I didn't want to use roundup on it. I left it go for a year and that was a big mistake.
The way I got rid of it was to let it grow long so I could grip it, loosened the soil with a spade, and then pulled the grass. Afterwards I dug up and sifted through all of the topsoil by hand to remove the white spaghetti-like roots left behind. That finally took care of it. From now on, any time I see that stuff jump my edging barriers, I'm after all the roots immediately with a garden spade.
Once its in your lawn, all you can do is mow it.

every fall i buy a jug of the crabgrass killer, kills other weeds to, that ya hook to a hose.....seems to work pretty good!!!!!!!

I don't know dittly-squat about herbicides, but it seems the broader the leaf, the easier it is to selectively kill it.
I was happy to see them come out with post-emergent crab grass killer - for the stuff that didn't the pre-emergent didn't stop in the spring.
But quack grass is almost as thin as regular grass and is much tougher to kill without taking out the rest of your lawn with it.

Some gardening of sorts last nite. If I don't do it, it doesn't get done. 1st I got a couple 5 gallon buckets full of manure. I pulled up all the radishes that had bolted. Mr. Bucky liked them! Planted the potted yellow canna & the variegated morning glory. Then I transplanted some 4 o'clocks into a couple pots to see how they might behave as perennials. I know we have native wild 4 o'clocks out here that are perennials. Find them in road side & waste areas. They're not showy or fragrant though like the non-native species nor do they provide the amount of pollinator interest. Reputedly these non-natives can be brought in, kept over winter & come back from their tuberous roots.

Helps to know someone glenn, like a corn & soybean farmer who probably has a part jug laying around who's willing to sell you a dab. Not a restricted use product either. I still have a partial jug of Allero (clethodim) I've had for probably 20 years. Keeps well.

When we had the camper yet there was a huge hog farmer there also I got to know pretty well. He was south of marshall, think belatine was a nearby town. He gave me a good sized jug or Roundup, the good stuff. I still have some left, but he told me he couldn't sell it???

Kinda glad I didn't plant much yet. Made a trip around the yard last nite & it was interesting to see some of the plants that were injured by radiative cooling. We live on top of a hill so we had no frost per se. It included some of the morning glories, volunteer 4 o'clocks, perennial salvia & volunteer tomatoes. Thought at first it might've been some Round Up I'd sprayed by one flower bed but found the injury scattered around in other places too. Same goofy pattern as what we're seeing in some fields. :scratch:

Deer are worse than rabbits. I dont know if it's feasible but a 6 ft diameter ring of woven wire is the only thing that has worked for me.

Here is my novice operation. Lettuce in the new barrel planters. Cukes on first fence. Onions, radishes, and green onions in first box. Amish Romas in second box. Kentucky Blue Lake pole beans on white fence. Have some Peppers on the deck in an Earth Box. 2 Pails, 1 with yellow and 1 red Cherry tomatoes. I can't wait to eat it.

Here is my novice operation. Lettuce in the new barrel planters. Cukes on first fence. Onions, radishes, and green onions in first box. Amish Romas in second box. Kentucky Blue Lake pole beans on white fence. Have some Peppers on the deck in an Earth Box. 2 Pails, 1 with yellow and 1 red Cherry tomatoes. I can't wait to eat it.

The wife saw it on Pinterest. The barrel has a seam all around it so just cut it with a skil saw. Worked great? SO I got 3 - 8' treated 2x4's and 6 - 8" blocks. Cut the 2 x 4's in 2' pieces. Just lay the barrels on them and ready to go. I may make more of them next year. I drilled about 7 holes in each with a 3/8" drill bit too. Filled with dirt and potting soil.

Found this guy on the wall yesterday morning. I'd seen them before but never took the time to figure out what it was. Sent a pic to the Boy Entomologist and he identified it as a bat tick. We used to have a lot of bats that lived in our house but with the recent white-nose syndrome or other factors, they've been on the decline. I saw none last year at the ranch. These ticks are probably residents too. Found it interesting that they can live for years without a host. It may be why I saw this one. He looked hungry so I mailed some off to glenn... :Mail:

OK garden experts......watering question. i need to water the garden and flowers. when is the best time to water???????
i've often read in the morning is the best, so the sun can evaporate or dry off any excess???????
i tend to disagree, with this heat i prefer to water in the evening when the garden and most areas are shaded and when the sun goes down the water/moisture hangs around longer..........especially in this heat.
with that being said i dont use a sprinkler, i hand water everything either with a watering can or a hose with a nossle of some sort as i feel a sprinkler wastes to much water.
so what do you fellers think??????????/

More to the roots too, so less worry ~ disease IMO. My boss from the golf course days always said temp + humidity = 150 or > keep an eye out for anything lookin different as that is prime time for some of the bent grass diseases we dealt with. The watering cycle would usually get changed a little, either a little earlier &/or a little less water at those times. Especially on the tees & greens that didn't get a lot of sun or wind.

i'm no expert but to me alot depends on what your gonna use???
first off i would wait till maybe first part of july, and either wait till right before a rain or water good right after. i've been told if you use anything with nitrogen in it if it doenst rain of get it into the ground you lose alot of the nitrogen value, also some of that stuff can burn the leaves on the plant. i like to use the miloganite stuff......doesnt burn the leaves.
you could use something like the chicken poo i used, got it at menards.

Picked some asparagus this morning, it's still going strong but a little rain wouldn't hurt. I gave my newly transplanted tomatoes and peppers a drink.

the tomatoes really shot up, and the celery is doing pretty good to. along with the heat i removed those cans last nite because i was i bit concerned about those cans and the heat combo would burn the plants. for now i left the cans on my peppers......

Finally got a chance to get back at gardening. Planted all the cannas & put the cages on the maters. Also got the 4 o'clocks seeded. All the transplants are coming along nicely. The Mrs. gave them some water last nite but the maters in particular came through yesterday better than they did the day before.

I planted the melons transplants this morning. Also the second batch of corn....American Dream.
Glen....I put coffee cans around all my Peppers, Romaine, Basil, Parsley, Broccoli, Cabbage, Kohlrabi, Pak Choi, and Cauliflower. I leave them on until the plants are getting to big. Big reason is protection from the wind. You don't have to take them off because it's hot.
I don't put them around the tomatoes. They are planted laying down on their side with stem buried up to the top leaves. A can would cut through the stem.

Yeah they have been saved for years before everyone bought the Kuerigs. I was a teacher and took home empty cans from the lounge. So I have a lot of them. I can also cut the bottoms out of ice cream pails and use them any problems like frost and I can just put the covers on overnight.
Glenn.....you should plant your tomatoes laying down. I learned that many years ago. I'll take a pic of them. I use this method. Great tip about laying them on their side a day or 2 to let them turn up.
I broke a few off before I now do this. I pick off all the leaves up to the top. Tomatoes are the only plant I know that grows roots out of the buried stem. So I wind up with a big root ball.
Also if you plant them vertical, the ground is cold deeper. This way they are near the surface where it is warm. You do have to mulch them when they start to get tomatoes to keep the moisture level constant.
So if I go to a greenhouse, I get the tallest leggyist plants they have. I don't now because none of my tomatoes are hybrids. So I save my own seed.

Tomatoes and peppers are doing good. My maters will be getting their second tie=offs to the trellis tomorrow. We've got maters and peppers on the vines all ready. None of our garden seeds are doing any good, and the damned squirrels ate every sunflower seed we planted. Lesson learned- start all the seed crops early in the house. Second lesson learned-either shoot way more squirrels with the pe;;et gun, or tell the deer if they want any sunflowers, they'd best start runnoing off these damned rodents.

Last year our rhubarb wasn't up to par so this spring I trended some 10-10-10 around the plants and sprinkled a nit of urea in the area before a rain. We have decent rhubarb again. Another side effect i hadn't anticipated is that we haven't had a single seed shoot bolting from the plant. That's a good thing. The warden is happy so that's mainly good too.

Toss 6.75" of rain on it in May and now the heat, you wouldn't know they were the same plants. Deep, dark green and about tripled in circumference & height. They had started to bolt earlier and haven't since. For grins, I topdressed an old fashioned green plant that had been feeding off the manure I've been putting on the cannas the last numerous years. It was big but had started to bolt early on. After the nitrogen, rainfall & heat, not much for bolting. Of course this is not replicated or peer reviewed but we can always think it should've been... :azn:

The lady slippers are not in my garden. I found quite a few patches at my land this spring.
They usually bloom around Memorial day. The flower gardens are doing great this year.

Those yellow ladies slippers bring back memories. My aunt & uncle had a cabin on Cox Lake west of Lake Itasca. We always called it a cabin but it was a 4 bedroom house with a hip-joint roof that'd been part of a working farm supplying loggers with food back in the day. One of my first trips there I found some yellow ladies slippers out behind the cabin. The cabin is long gone from neglect and vandalism after my uncle died but the memories are still there.

Ken, a little more on you horizontal tomato planting: Does this allow or help allow you to forego using cages or other means of support? :scratch:

No....They grow to normal height. What the laying them down does is allow the stem to grow extra roots to feed the plant. Makes for a large root ball. It also has the roots near the surface where the ground is warmer in spring. So they grow faster.
But you have to mulch them in the summer since they will dry out faster. So I put 10-10-10 garden fertilizer under them when planted. Then when I am going to mulch them, I sprinkle some more over the roots and mulch 3-4 inches. You do this when you see the first tomatoes. Do this to stabilize the moisture and prevent blossom end rot. Straw works the best.
There are 2 kinds of tomatoes.....Determinate and Indeterminate. Determinate only grow to a certain height then stop. Lots of tomatoes in a shorter time. Indeterminate don't stop growing until frost kills them. I grow both....all Heirloom tomatoes are indeterminate. When they get to the top of the cage, I pinch them off. At that point they won't ripen anyway.
With indeterminate you MUST pinch off all the suckers that form in every leaf notch. If you don't the plant will get out of hand. With Determinate you don't pinch suckers.
I use to grow all hybrids and buy seeds every year. Now I grow no hybrids and save the seed every year to plant next year. I grow Heirlooms for flavor to eat out of hand. And determinates for canning so I get a lot at 1 time.
4 of the best varieties I have ever found are Saucey, a Roma type, Oregon Spring, Siletz, and Legend. Developed by Dr Jim Bagett at Oregon State Un. Bred to produce even in the cool rainy northwest. I always get plenty even if we get a cool summer. In a hot summer I get lots early. Done canning by Sept. 1.

Our tomatoes were planted upright 4"-6" deep with a wad of rotted sheep manure in the bottom of the hole underneath them. Probably unnecessary given the warm temps, manure test & soil test levels but not taking any chances. The maters have done tremendously well thru brutal heat and are growing like mad. Haven't needed watering for 4 or 5 days now. Was 100 degrees here according to the thermometer yesterday. Doing some minimal hand weeding but nothing to open the soil surface and lose what at this point is precious moisture. Semi-artificial soil containing lots of perlite & leftover osmocote on a south facing slope. It's all good. :cool:

Here the varieties are Jet Star, Celebrity, La Roma, a grape and old fashioned yellow pear. No clue on their growth habit being determinate or indeterminate. We've got lots of flowers already on all varieties except the La Roma's. We also have lots of bumblebees already this year. They've been busy on both the annual and perennial salvia. The Bushel Boy greenhouses are located not too far from here. Looked at a herbicide drift complaint there a few years back & was able to go inside their operation. Lots of little cardboard boxes containing bumblebees scattered throughout to pollinate their maters. :happy1:

I know Celebrity is a determinate. Most times the label will tell you, otherwise a simple online search. I use to be really big into growing maters when the kids were still home. I planted heirloom (open pollinated) varieties that were indeterminate. I started them from seed and put them out early with protection. I planted them in a 6 foot grid and didn't pinch off new growth until about Sept 1. Lots of times the plants grew over 8 feet tall. I liked picking without having to kneel down. Some of my better plants would yield around 100 lbs over the season. I usually started getting the first ripe tomatoes before July 1.
Bumblers don't pollinate in the traditional way, rather, they vibrate the plant helping it to self pollinate its flowers within themselves. This is necessary in a green house where the plants aren't rattled around by the wind. I use to shake my plants when I walked by them to aid in pollination.
I could talk for hours about tomatoes and peppers but I wouldn't want to bore you.
A couple of my plants look like they got a whiff of herbicide when the corn was recently sprayed, I'm hoping they'll be ok.

Celebrity is a semi-determinate tomato because it grows to a certain height (3 to 4 feet). Kind of in between. I have grown Celebrity a few times. Excellent eating tomato. Fruit grows in clusters. I stopped because I didn't want to grow hybrids anymore. Can't save the seed. I would not prune any suckers off it.
La Roma is determinate. Excellent paste tomato. Don't prune it. Again I don't grow it because it is a hybrid.
Jet Star is indeterminate. Will grow until killed by frost. Should be planted in a tall cage. When it gets to the top prune the tips off of it or it will start to hang down the sides. Here are a few pics of suckers. Should be pinched off of indeterminate plants

A sucker is basically a new tomato plant growing on the old one. Not many on determinate so you let them grow.

Yes....Amish Paste is and Indeterminate Heirloom and a Non Hybrid so the seed can be saved from year to year. One of the largest Roma Paste type.

Things are making headway here altho the Mrs. keeps buying stuff for me to plant. Good thing she's gone for a few days or I'd never get a break. Squash and pumpkins planted on the 8th started emerging yesterday morning. I was worried about bunnies and gophers raising cain with the garden. Nada from them so far. The wild turkey we've had hanging around has been a novelty, just passing thru so I thought. In the back of my mind though I wondered if he'd bother anything, especially after seeing some of the crap they pull in corn and soybean fields over the years. Saw him again yesterday. Sure as shooting when I checked out the pumpkins last night, there was one hill that was ripped up with a big three-toed footprint in the middle of it! :angry: Haven't seen any more evidence of damage today but if I see the turkey again, I may make him dance with the .22. He can go wreck someone else's garden. :mad1:

The front of the tag says they grow from 30-48'! :scratch: :rotflmao: We used to have some different colored & double flowered ones at one time. Got too cold in the crawl space and they didn't keep. Was wondering if you ever got any of yours to make it to flowering from seed. Have a few volunteer plants that are way ahead of the bulbs I planted.

Cool, I may have to trade some of my Purple leaf ones for a yellow flowered one. 30-48" inches seems pretty short to me. Mine often reach 8-10 feet tall. Yes, they do plant themselves from seeds. Maybe it would be easier to harvest seeds than dig bulbs. :rotflmao:

I could see working a trade on some bulbs for sure deadeye. Those purple-leaved ones you grow are beasts. They grow them at MN State Fair in plantings. Theirs are typically several feet taller than the green-leaved variety planted with them. The green type I have seems to max out at about 6'-7' even when we have lots of sun, rain & abundant nitrogen is applied. It's probably OK this yellow one is shorter. The way the wind howls across the prairie anything above soil level is fair game. Seems like we find that out the hard way in the corn almost every year someplace. :doah:

Started sampling my radishes. They are so hot as to be inedible. Didn't matter what variety or color. Don't remember them ever being this hot. Must have been the hot weather. I know radishes like it cool. Pulled them all out. :thumbs: :thumbs:

I liked the Daikons OK but still liked the spring radishes like white & scarlet globe in the fall better here. My fall favorites though are still the red meat or watermelon radishes. Get up to the size of a softball and keep extremely well. Have been eating them yet in March. The initial flavor & texture is that of a sweet tasting kohlrabi when sliced. A few seconds later you realize, whoa, it ain't no kohlrabi! The heat is generally tolerable though. I grew several types of Chinese winter radishes for a few years. The China Rose were just plain nasty. Even my buddy who loves hot stuff couldn't handle them. I wanted to try some Black Spanish but was warned by others locally that they were the same way. Just heat, no flavor. I started playing around with winter radishes the year my Mom passed away. It was a rotten spring (we had 18" of snow on May 3rd & a lot of prevent plant acres) so planted a bunch of the radishes & greens I'd bought for fall. If the wild turkey doesn't quit messin' with my vine crops we may wind up doing a bunch of that again.

I have grown the Black Spanish. Sliced paper thin and put in a jar with some salt. The salt would draw out the moisture and make a kind of brine. Good eating. Also tried China Rose.....as you said.....to hot.
Daikons have been the best. I learned that when I came upon a field of them planted with turnips as a cover crop while pheasant hunting. Planted them then and they were like a giant white carrot. Mild eating.

I think the red meat or watermelon radish seed I've got actually came from FF. It's last year's seed however. Jungs was another supplier I got some from once upon a time including the red meat, daikons & China Rose. The Black Spanish were available from another catalog I used to get but didn't see them in this spring's batch. Found them online by doing a search too.

I have gotten seeds from SeednSuch. They have smaller less expensive packets. I would rather buy new seeds every year, than have a bunch left over every year. Twilley does also.
This year I am planting Minowase Summer Cross #3 Daikon from Twilley. They do not take orders over their website. Have to call.
I never buy seeds off of a seed rack. They never have the best Varieties. Example some of the big stores have large Burpee seed racks. The Burpee catalogs don't have any of those.

Kinda fun to see where others are getting their seeds & what their focus is. After the recent wild turkey debacle, I'm leaning towards starting all the vine crops myself like I did when my wife was working at the greenhouse in Owatonna. The owner let me plant my own flats & he kept them watered for me. Sweet deal. He and I both like Chinese food so we'd have "date night" every once in a while to solve all the world's problems. Need to do that again.
We're in transition but a lot of things are in place. Got the garden where it needs to be (protected south facing slope w/water access) & where I can get at it with the manure spreader. Got the tiller I wanted and a decent disk to incorporate fertilizer & manure quickly. Have 5 sections of Kovar quack digger but still looking for a 10' - 12' mounted digger. Online have to compete with the food plot people. Betting I can find one in someone's grove or back of their shed locally given my contacts. Not necessarily in MN either. Have trailer will haul.
Also planning on expanding the garden area as vine crops consume a lot of real estate and are best rotated. In retirement I could see us getting back into what we started doing when we first bought the place. Selling roadside produce & decorative stuff, especially in the fall. The sheep consume the excess so nothing goes to waste. Left an area for winter radishes & greens but what I really want to get another crack at is snap peas. A little hit and miss where the garden was located before but think this site should work well. When they hit in the fall, they are the bomb! :happy1:

Those are the ones I've been growing. They seldom get cooked here. The last several times I grew them I gave away gallon bags full. No way I could eat all of them. I'd like to get them in the ground the end of July along with some of the winter radishes and greens.
Turkey update: He left the garden alone yesterday. I scattered some shell corn I'd saved for the pheasants out in that vicinity. Not sure he found it but the squirrels did so they can point it out to him. Now I'll have a yard full of Round Up Ready corn. :rolleyes:
The yellow canna opened up yesterday! Pretty flowers. Hope the heavy weather stays away tonite.

Yes, I get a catalog from them. I do know that they are a small outfit and if you don't order after a year, they won't send out another mailing. Because of cost.
I get all the other regular ones from the big outfits, but it seems like almost to many.

when you say small packages...how small say vs the ones in the big box store........and price wise????????? on a normal year when i get seeds i plant 4 of the big box store packages of kalarabi and carrots. 1 each of green beans, cukes and lettuce and spinach. if i want to equal that how many small packets would i need......relatively. i also usually plant about 6-8 radish packs per year.

That's difficult to answer. Some packets are sold by weight and some by seed count. I will look at what the size packet is and try to get the number of seeds I need for 1 year. Some varieties are hybrids and others not. I usually try to get hybrids if possible. Except tomatoes. Hybrids are almost always a step up from nonhybrids. Better germination, better taste, more uniform etc.
Most seed varieties in Big Box Stores are not hybrids or older. There are no hybrid beans or peas so I keep some for the next year by letting them dry.
I also like to try newer supposedly better varieties that are never on seed racks. Especially the new All American ones. Can only been found in seed catalogs.
AAS WINNERS are flowers and vegetables that have been "Tested Nationally & Proven Locally.™" Each AAS entry is tested for superior garden performance by horticulture professionals across North America.
The best Sweet Corn can only be gotten from a catalog. I wouldn't even think of getting corn from a seed rack. My family is fussy and will only eat Augmented Supersweet Corn. If you have never had a Super Sweet Corn, you are really missing out.
Same with melons. Wouldn't get from a seed rack. Other veggies the same. If you will tell me what you are interested in, I can give you some suggestions.

One thing I am curious about, when you order a single packet from one of these outfits, what kind of shipping charges do you incur? For instance, I found Mexibell peppers on Seeds-n-Such, an AAS proven winner back in the day I believe that I grew back in the late 80's. A friend who was working with Sun Seeds at the time gave me the seeds along with several other things to play with. The Mexibells did great even direct seeded in '88. '88 was hotter than hell here. We had water access tho where we had recently torn down the old barn. I think they'd work great for stuffed peppers with their added zing. Would love to grow them again but if it's gonna cost $10 to get the seeds here, perhaps not.
I went by Souba's Greenhouse in Owatonna today, coming & going to BTT50's registration. They worked with Ball Seed a lot and had a large selection of AAS proven winners in their offerings. The wife went along to see their extravaganza for many years. Sometimes though I like some of the things that I remember that are no longer available. For instance, Norgold russet potatoes. For the home garden growing up in SE MN, far superior to a Burbank russet. The Norkotah comes close but even those have fallen out of favor, being replaced by something "new and improved". If I ever find a Patten greening apple tree, it's coming to live here, regardless of the price.

I have grown Mexibell peppers in the past. I really liked them. Now I grow Red Ace. A short season Bell Pepper. I also have grown most of the potatoes developed at NDSU. I tried Norgold, but seemed to not be a very long keeper. Now I grow Norkota. Depends on what I want to use them for. My grandkids love mashed potatoes. The best potato for that is Norland. Been growing it for over 40 years.It keeps well, and flowers early so it is great for baby reds.
i planted 65 hills this year.....Norland, Norkota and Red Viking. They won't last past Christmas.
Yes, shipping charges can be high. So I try to get seeds from 2 companies. So the charges aren't to bad.

Have grown lots of Norlands over the years. A friend of mine grows them in the Valley. He sent me some seed Norlands a few years ago. They arrived in a couple egg cartons. Pretty cute. Would've been wonderful baby reds but I planted them. I liked growing them as an early red and Ponitac's as my later red. Fried potatoes it was hard to beat a good Pontiac. I seem to recall the same about the Norgold but we ate them rapidly so not a problem. We loved baked potatoes growing up and still do. As I get the garden here transitioned, potatoes will be back in the equation.

and i tend to stay withthe burpee brand.i've tried others but burpee to me so far have better results for me.
onions...... i buy the sets from the local hardware store...it,s definetly hit and miss usually i'm satisifed with th results...........this year based on what i see will be a good crop.
the tomatoes and peppers i but the plants from fleet farm, they get there stuff from a big greenhouse out by monticello and have had generally good results from them. although i kinda enjoy starting that stuff from seed.......i', simply dont have the room or a setup to make it feasable!!!!!!!!

So far so good placating the wild turkey with my corn offering. Didn't see any more of his damage in the garden yesterday. Now however the dummy appears to be following the squirrels around and digging up the corn wherever they plant it! Last night I was checking things out and he was standing on the edge of the yard no more than 30' away from me. Didn't have anything handy to throw at him so I took off after him waving my arms and yelling. He didn't seem real afraid of me, just sorta sauntered off into the plum & sumac brush. :doah:
If he continues to leave things alone, the main garden is off to a good start. All 6 jack o'lantern pumpkin & 10 buttercup squash hills have plants in them that are loving this heat. Watering was a must or we would've had squat. After being somewhat pokey, yesterday I noticed that 11 out of 15 hills of cukes were emerged. Oddly enough, the year old green dragon seed was out of the ground before the new muncher seed was. :scratch: The tendergreen string beans are finally showing some signs of life too. Doing a little digging I could see the crooks below the surface a half inch down. Tomatoes continue growing like mad. Several yellow pear fruit set. Zucchini may need a little TLC in the form of some nitrogen so may address that tonite. Did that last year & they took off like gangbusters. Cannas are coming up here and there like they always do. Still puzzled why the four o'clocks are so slow. Not sure if I might've overwatered or what but both beds have spotty emergence. Two different seed sources, some I saved and a packet the wife bought. The 4 volunteers I transplanted into pots are 8+" tall now. :confused:

Carrots...I always try to find the variety Bolero....The longest keeping there is. I can keep them for 9 months in cold storage.
A couple things about onions.....They are biennial. The second year produces seed pods on top. They don't keep at all. The larger the sets, the more likely they will bolt to make seeds because the onion thinks it is the second year.. So buy the smallest ones you can find. In bulk if you can find them. Don't use the scoop. Pick out the smallest ones. More per pound also.
My philosophy about onions is...."if they make you cry when pealing them....They are to hot to eat raw." Because of this I always buy sweet onions in bundles.
Yellow Candy and Red Candy. Plant as soon as you can get them in the ground. The larger the top when they start making bulbs....the larger the bulb will be. I just fertilized mine again today with 10-10-10. Try calling some nurseries and find out if they have onion bundles. You will notice the difference.
As far as starting your own peppers and tomatoes....I start them in small round or square pots like the ones geraniums come in. As soon as they come up I put 2 apple boxes apart and put a shop grow light suspended. As soon as seeds come up they go under the lights. I have to put something under them to get them an inch below the light.
When they get true leaves on them about 3-4 inches high....They get transplanted into those round pots. Gradually move them outside for an hour or 2. Then longer. Every time they get transplanted the stem is buried. When I move them outside, they go into a greenhouse on my patio like this....

I do the same with Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kohlrabi, and Lettuce. Plus all my melons. In also start my own Herbs. I just took mine apart a week ago till next year.
The seeds you are buying are fine. But if you want to start your own tomatoes and peppers.....buying them all from a catalog will bring the shipping down.

we Get our stuff from an Amish family. They been doing it for years. Never any bad stuff. These, according to the box they came in said they where from Washington.
I happened to see them at the local grocery store yesterday, pretty sure they were 2.99 per pound.

This a.m. planted a couple astilbe plants the wife brought home. The red one had been setting by the house since last spring. Thought it was dead but after the snow melted off it was still alive. Also planted a coral bell. Now we have something growing on the east side of the house. It looked like chemical fallow after my glyphosate treatments the past couple years.
Checked the main garden tonite & there is something growing other than weeds in all 37 vine crop hills. String beans are emerging well. The four o'clocks are starting to show up where there were gaps. I planted them plenty heavy as I've had mixed success especially with purchased seed. Maters will love this rain as will the cannas. Added urea around the zucchini last nite & watered it in. They appear to be responding already. We got .61" of rain at the ranch so feeling fortunate. Not as much as some but more than a lot of folks got. Lots of tiny weeds coming in the main garden, primarily crabgrass & waterhemp. Will have my work cut out for me for this next week.

the dill, tomatoes, and onions seems to be doing OK, looks like my onion crop will be good this year. the cukes are starting to vine out! the leaves wither up during the day in this heat and after it gets shaded and a drink perk back up. from what i can tell the peppers are ok.

Weeded the string beans & all the vine crop hills last night. Talk about weed pressure! The good news is once the vine crops take off they generally do a pretty good job of keeping the weeds down. Also good weed killing weather with his heat. Took a rake to the areas between the hills. I could see thousands of tiny waterhemp & crabgrass plants coming. Perfect size to raise cain with them. :happy1:

Being my new septic drain field took over my pumpkin/gourd/cucumber/mound, I had to plant them in the fenced garden. I had been using about 2/3 of the space so thought I had enough room but now the pumpkins are over running the cucumbers. :sad:

Got one in a shrub area at the corner of the house. I know it’s a weed, but I’ve decided to leave it.
Also have a lot of milkweeds this year, and there are plenty of monarch butterfly caterpillars on them. I’m leaving them alone, too, since that’s the only plant monarchs lay eggs on. Their numbers are decreasing.

We smoked dry corn silk in hollowed out corn cobs fitted with hollowed out pieces of corn stalks. Not one of my brighter moments as a youth, but probably a lot safer than some of the other stunts I tried on the farm as a kid. Bull fighting? Really pissed off my uncle. Hanging from the highest points of silos by just my hands? Stealing Chesterfields from my aunt and smoking them in a little shelter built of straw bales?

Dad had a bunch of old "It's a Boy" & "It's a Girl" stogies stashed in a drawer. A 6th grade buddy & I decided it was a good idea to smoke them. We hiked off to a culvert where "no one would see us". Never mind they could see where we went plain as day. We lit 'em up & after a few puffs decided we'd miscalculated. We turned green, about the same color as the stogies. My friend hurled & even tho I didn't I might've felt better if I had. Dad never said a word. He knew.

We lived right on the edge of town and there was a huge cornfield next to us. That is where we went to hide and make trouble. We stole Kents from our mothers and smoked them in the fort we made in the cornfield. I remember it wasn't near as much fun as we thought it would be. We couldn't even smoke more than one. LOL

Picked a handful of jalapenos, 2 small cukes, and a gold zookini today. Some of the other zookini are showing signs of rot, not all tho. The tomatoes are looking good, spose I could pull a few for green fried. The green beans have climbed a 6 foot trellis and are making there way down but havnt flowered yet. I did pick a green bell but the rest are pretty small. If I remember right last year I was picking cukes non stop come July.

I bypass the bugs that way... ;) :bonk: Planted 3 rows ~ 15' long of 3 different string bean varieties tonite. Got my winter radishes purchased and several spring radishes I'll seed the end of July. Also got greens, a couple more radish varieties and a couple more varieties of sugar snap pea ordered. I want to avoid using stool softener at all costs! :shocked:

Last night we had ribs for dinner with some carrots and green beans I picked out of the garden....I forgot how much fresh carrots taste compared to store bought. :happy1:
I checked the zucchini yesterday, I have a few that are about six inches long. I noticed something weird though...I bought both plants from the same farmers garden, but the plants have different shaped leaves :scratch:

1 1/2 inches here early this morning. Everything is back to lush green. We are eating Romaine lettuce. Lots of peas. Grandkids love sitting in the pea patch. Strawberries are finally done. Time to start potting up daughter plants to start new rows for next year. I had 4 thirty foot rows. 2 varieties....Honeyoe and Cabot. Cabot has the largest fruit of any strawberry. Grandkids call them strawberry bombs.
Picked 4 ice cream buckets of Juneberries. Just put the last of them in the freezer. Should be enough to make about 15 pies. Raspberries starting to produce. Yellow ones are really good. Purple ones are the biggest and taste the best. Reds are are little behind.
Had some poor germination for carrots, beets, and spinach. Had to reseed them. So they are a little behind. All my tomatoes have green fruit. So I fertilized them and put straw around them to reduce Blossom End Rot.

yes, I actually have some yet from last year in the freezer, nuttin wrong with it. Been doing that for years. I usually always end up giving some to people who need some also.
Only trick to the frozen dill is use what you need and then get it back in the freezer ASAP.

i've heard that before. i get my pickles from becks in elk river and they keep telling me that not everyone can grow dill :scratch:!!!!!! my stepdad lives in new richmond wisc and he grows it, i give him the seeds.
soil ???? its regular black dirt to me. before this part of town was added it used to be a farm field!!! i know the General grows it too!!!!!!!!! all i know is long time ago i almost didnt find any so the next spring i bought a couple packets and started growing it myself. i bought the dill that forms the little bulb on the end. every year i let a bunch turn dark into seed and just replant that the next year. i even have it right by the black walnut tree!!! and NUTTIN supposed to grow there. :scratch: :scratch:

correct......i plant the dill like the carrots. make a trench with the hoe and maybe a 1/2 to 1/4 inch deep!!!!!!!!!

Stuff is having a banner year here too. The new garden spot is just loaded with it. Have a sprayer mixed up with generic Select (clethodim) I think from a couple years ago. Sprayed some on a small patch of crabgrass by the barn to make sure. Smelled like Select but rather not nuke my garden by accident. It's out where everyone can see it now. :embarrassed:

Decided to cut clean and freeze what little celery I could get for now. 4 plants/ stocks and got a qt ziplock bag 1/3 full :confused: :doah: that should fill at least a gallon bag.
We shall see, hopefully round 2 will have better results.

Picked 2 more gold zookini, with lots more on the way. A few green ones coming but not like the gold. Sliced, oiled, seasoned and grilled topped with parmesan cheese is real tasty.

I seeded dill a few years ago. I never use it all. Some goes to seed and now comes up anywhere in my garden. I picked my first head of cauliflower today. My daughter baked it. I also am eating cabbage. Yellow summer squash is a few days away. Green beans should be on the menu next week.

last night putzing around in the garden looking at my tomatoes i am seeing a fair amount of my plants wilting!!!!! :angry2: :angry2: so i googled preventing tomato wilt. it talks about irregular watering, PH levels, and bacteria and fungus. i try really hard to be consistent with watering, this morning after i watered last nite some look better today?? :scratch: :scratch: my tomatoes and peppers get hand watered with a water can when i do it, pretty sure my wife uses the water hose when she is in charge, so......
up until a couple years ago i never had this issue, and i do my best to rotate where i plant things in the garden. when i googled that there was a product that came up to spray on the plant to prevent that.......some kind of wilt protection and supposedly good for the full growing season, they dont give that stuff away either. it also said to plant in pots or raised gardens but that aint feasable.
i value my tomatoes out of the garden like gold so this irritataes me to no end........ any ideas. seriouly thinking of getting this wilt stuff thats supposedto protect/prevent wilt, but wonder iffin its to late for this year????
i'm going to go ask the local country store here in town if they can do a PH test, its associated with the coop here.

So here is a question to you that are more knowledgeable than me. Most of you. LOL I have a asparagus batch in my driveway ditch. I mow it with my pull behind mower so it leaves it about 4-5" high. Will I hurt my asparagus if I keep mowing it down? It is now tall with seeds on it.

I only mow mine in the early spring, and once more in fall. Then in the fall after mowing, I cover with mulch.
From what I've read, mutable mowings damage the plants.

Yes.....mowing it off all the time will kill it. Asparagus needs to have the ferns on top to allow the plants to store energy through it's ferns. Same reason you can only take spears for a few weeks(depending on how old the patch is.) When the spears in my patch get to be pencil size, I stop cutting them.
I leave the ferns on over winter to catch snow. Cut them off in spring.

The string beans planted late July 5th are emerging. The Top Crop variety has emerged completely while the Tender Green & Tenderette are little more pokey. The first planting Tender Green is beginning to flower. Squash and pumpkins are going bonkers with the rainfall, sunshine and warmer temps. If this keeps up they will cover their space in another week or so. Green Dragon cukes are starting to vine while the Munchers are slower. The one hill I replanted July 4th has some emerged seedlings. Maters are looking good. Disease free, lots of fruit set. The yellow pear plants are 5+' tall & growing. Put a cage around a Champion plant Friday just minutes before it rained. Another week and it would've been tough to do. Zucchini's are flowering like mad.
One of the 4 o'clocks I potted is about ready to flower. Lots of bumblebees. Just hoping I don't locate their nest with the lawnmower. :shocked:

Will start picking yellow and purple raspberries. Green beans, purple beans, and yellow squash will be ready by the end of the week. Lots of green tomatoes. Pinching off the tops of indeterminate tomatoes as they reach the top of the cages.
Potted up 75 new strawberry daughter plants to move to new beds in a couple of weeks. Corn is just starting to tassel. Hopefully it will be ready to eat in 3 weeks. 2 test varieties from NDSU's Horticulture Extension Service.
I am testing 2 varieties each of Cantaloupe, Corn, Peas, and Carrots.

Not in the garden. It's a volunteer sunflower. Seeded it's self in the yard so I let it go. It's over 10 feet tall and still growing. I may just need a stump grinder this fall. :rotflmao:

Doesn't have to be. Get thee to a garden center or big box store & look for a product like Dipel (Bacillus thurengensis) or Sevin or any number of synthetic pyrethroids such as permethrin or bifenthrin. Cabbage worms are a PITA but aren't necessarily a deal breaker.

White butterflies laying eggs on and Cole Crop. Plant is still OK. Dust first to kill the ones there. No heads there yet. Since I don't want to be eating pesticides.....I cover my Broc, Caul, etc with a fine mesh netting. Keeps them from laying eggs. I have been eating Broc and Caul over the past week.

Did the dollar tour on the yard & garden(s) last nite. Morning glories are starting to bloom. Need to make sure I collect some of the seed from the variegated variety so it can have its own trellis someplace next year. It's not as aggressive as the varieties that come from seed each year. Staked all the tomato cages with electric fence posts. With potential wind coming would be preferable if they are standing. Two of the recently planted string bean varieties are completely emerged. The Tenderette has some gaps. Was a difference in the procedure used for establishment & it shows. Likely got them a hair to deep given the ample rainfall that followed. Cannas have put it in overdrive with the heat and rain. Nowhere near what deadeye's are but mine were planted 2-3 weeks later. 1st potted four o'clock was blooming while I was grilling. Love the way they smell.

Some of you guyz have impressive gardens....I'm lucky to get wild flowers to come up every spring,however my morning glories come back every year without seeding,however my moon glories didn't appear this summer morning glories are very sparse compared to my neighbor,his glories engulf his entire privacy fence just a wall of green vines/flowers,hummingbirds are enjoying the trumpeter vine flowers that popped this week after the last rain storm here,good to see.

First time I planted pumpkins and gourds in my fenced in garden. They have grown over the cucumbers, past and up the sunflowers, engulfed the peppers and are now headed to the potatoes. If they make it past the onions and start up the tomatoes, I gonna yank them.

Back in from doing battle with the weeds in the main garden. Probably the last time I'll be able to use the tiller on the vine crops for the year. July 5th planted beans in the foreground, Jack be Little pumpkins, then jack o'lantern pumpkins, then buttercup squash, cucumbers after that and my ratty first planting of string beans. They've led a miserable existence thus far. Next two pics are the small garden. The yellow pear tomatoes are now 6' tall. Zucchini plants got huge too this year for some reason. This garden is likely to be relegated to just floral stuff as time goes on. It produces but it's getting too shaded especially earlier in the season when the sun is high overhead. The main garden gets full sun, one of the reasons we chose that spot. We'll probably about double its size eventually.

After the deer attacked our cukes the second time, I built kind of a shanty Irish fence around them with some old woven wire. It ain't much but it's keeping them out. The warden even picked enough cukes to make some refrigerator pickles. I'm watering the plants now while waiting for the lawn to dry out.
Also getting some zucchini and a few cherry tomatoes. We like the Sun Sugar variety.

Grew up eating Purple Pods. I also grew them back in the days when I had a big garden. Don’t garden much anymore because I live in the midst of too many veggie eating critters. I have always thought that the Purple Pods, Kentucky Wonders, and Missouri Wonders had the best flavor of all the beans.

It's funny with the cherry tomatoes, they're just a sampler right now while checking out the rest. I put 2 gold and 2 green zucchini in and I'm running otta counter top room. Have done lots of grilled rings and last night did a big batch of deep fried parmesan fries out of one, perty good. The cukes, another 3 quarts today of refrigerator pickles, hafta enjoy picking while we can, it'll come to a screaming halt before we know it..

Gave our 1st zucchini of the season to a friend's Mom. She'll be 92 or 93 in August and had insisted that we grow her some. Had called ahead to make sure she was home. Delivered it just before noon & had a nice visit. There was a recipe she'd looked up online she was going to try. Reminds me of a little younger version of my Mom only more vocal. A blast to talk to nonetheless. :cool:

Went out this morning and picked green beans. Ended up with 2 qts of pickled green beans. Taking a good look at everything and how pathetic my tomatoes and some other plants are I'm getting to the point if cashing it in. :confused: the kalarbi isn't going anywhere and the ones that do bulb out aren't getting bigger than a tennis ball and those are not near as tender as they should be. :confused: :pouty:

Sucks when Mother Nature doesn't smile on you glenn. Got some owies here and some successes too. Something recently mashed part of a row of 4 o'clocks by the well. I'm blaming tomcats fighting or turkeys. Could've been a fawn too I suppose. They're all over the place. I must've smacked the morning glories with a whiff of dicamba a few weeks back. The leaves are showing textbook symptoms. Not as impressive as some years as a result. Vine crops are going berserk. Scares me to think what'll happen if it decides to rain a couple inches. Some of the tomatoes look great, some look like they need more sunlight. We'll have plenty but wait'll next year when they move to their new home. July 5th planted string beans are smokin'. The ratty 1st planting still looks ratty but is in full bloom. They seem to compensate somewhat for a thin stand much like soybeans do. And the Rodney Dangerfield of vegetables, our zucchini? What can I say. They're zucchini. They're already getting ahead of us even as late planted as they were. :rolleyes:

Picked 4 ice cream pails of green beans the last week. Purple bean are a few days away yet. Picked my first Saucy tomatoes today. Can make some fresh salsa. Too many yellow squash. Melons are looking good. tilled up a row of Honeyoe Strawberries today. Ready to plant some Cabot Strawberry daughter plants tomorrow. Have them rooting in pots and ready to live on their own. Can't eat the Broccoli fast enough.
Making some refrigerator pickles with Broccoli, Cauliflower, Green and Purple beans, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Red Onions, and Jalapeno Peppers .Ready to try them tomorrow.

Not sure where yer maters are growing Gunner but here's a recent U of MN release on it. I'll say this much, I haven't had much of an issue over the years & after soil testing I can see why. The pH in the garden where the tomatoes are planted is 7.6. Sometimes when we've been through a wet spell & it dries out but not much otherwise.

Did some more fall garden planting last nite. First though I had to tear up a little more real estate so there'd be room for all of it. Got 3 double rows (twin rows on 30" centers) of snap peas planted so at least there was that. Can put some hog panels in easily for trellises. Figured I'd better get them in as past experience has taught me that earlier is usually better if you want a chance to make it work. It's fairly dry though so if it goes too long without rain, will need to water the rows to get them to germinate more evenly. Should be able to get my fall/winter radishes & greens in this week. They're a little more forgiving but when you have conditions that allow you to plant, you do it. Otherwise, it suddenly rains for two weeks and you're left holding the bag or seed packets until next year. :rolleyes:

gunner.........i use epsom salt, about every 3rd or 4th watering i but a tablespoon of it by the stalk before i water them. i've only had 3 with it this year.
been doing this for quite a few years and seems to help. i've also been told that inconsistent watering can do that????????/

ive thought about putting in some radishes but with the lack of rain and this heat.....i have no confidence they'll do anything. :confused:

As soon as tomatoes start to appear, I put straw around them Trying to stabilize the moisture. Not hay.....full of weed seeds. Always seems to work.
peppers will also get blossom end rot. Straw around them also.

He put some mulch around the base of 'em to help hold the moisture. He was pretty careful to only water around the base of the plant as well as the amount & timing of his watering too. The pc I read most of mentioned too much fertilizer as a possible culprit, which is what he thinks happened. That causes the plant to not get enough calcium where it needs it most. Some things on straw: Clean straw is a great mulching material, as long as you know the source and what was sprayed on the small grain crop it came from. Why? Isn't that how you keep the weeds out of it? Yes, but here comes the agronomist's butt: If the field was sprayed with something like Curtail which is good on Canada thistle, there can be enough residue in the straw to damage sensitive plants which means most broadleaves. It might not kill them but it's certainly capable. Had several instances where people were using grass clippings from lawns that had been sprayed with it and some major problems arose. It's extremely water soluble so if it rains, it comes out of the clippings quickly and washes into the soil.
We've also seen issues from manure where pastures were treated with clopyralid, the active ingredient in Stinger, or aminopyralid, Stinger's younger cousin. The stuff runs right through the digestive tracts of animals unmetabolized and departs in their urine & feces. It accumulates in the bedding. This gets hauled out and spread on the fields. Not a problem if you plant corn or small grains on that ground but plant soybeans there and you can find out in a hurry how sensitive they are. I forgot a few years back when spreading manure that field would be soybeans next year & it killed out a nasty hole in my customer's field. Buy straw that wasn't sprayed? Typically it'll have more weed seed in it. Here if it isn't sprayed, it's generally underseeded to alfalfa, limiting your herbicide options. Not trying to throw cold water on using straw, just keep both eyes open and avoid making a mistake with it is all.

Planted 7 rows of fall/winter radishes last nite. Gotta water 'em in tonite along with the snap peas. That oughta make it rain. Worked before anyway... :rolleyes: Sent a bunch of fruit and veggies to compete at the Freeborn Co. Fair. Mine were the only pears there so I should win that class handily... :rotflmao:

I use to use straw around the tomatoes and I had good results. The last couple years I have been using fabric around my tomatoes, cukes, and a few other things. Its spendy but you can use it for several years.

Excellent post Dotch. Never thought about sprays on straw affecting the garden. I use a lot of straw on my strawberries. to keep the berries off the dirt and for winter cover. I do know that.....Don't plant potatoes where you put manure. They get full of scab.

I know you know your stuff Ken as do most others here. I've become a sort of bastardized county agent only w/o the pay or bennies. I never know what someone is going to dump on my desk when I'm out. There were also some straw bale gardening people that had trouble with clopyralid although that like many things got swept under the rug. Didn't fit the narrative. :rolleyes:

Some friends and foes to keep an eye out for from yesterday. The first one is a minute pirate bug. Voracious aphid eater. Looked like he'd sucked the juice out of the soybean aphid closest to it. 2nd one is a soldier beetle, also a soft bodied insect eater. Big enough to tangle with the ants that tend to protect the aphids so they can collect the honeydew, basically sugar. Last one is spider mite stippling. They're tiny and live primarily on the undersides of leaves. While this is on soybeans, they'll also infest string beans and can get into sweet corn, especially when it gets dry enough and they have nothing else to eat.

We have had something the last few weeks that has made hundreds of small holes in our radish leaves. When I water it looks like small mouse turds washing off the leaves. Is that bug poop or the bug?

Like I tell people, without a "good" picture, it's pretty hard for me to say for sure. Bad, out of focus pics are the same way.
I can guess that it's likely flea beetles, the same thing we encountered in the yellow & oriental mustard fields I scouted when living in North central ND. We've seen quite a few red-headed flea beetles here in both corn & soybeans. A lot larger than those in brassicas but inconsequential in both of these crops.

They may be difficult to photograph Barry as they hop around pretty quickly about the time you want to snap their picture. Had a beeotch of a time getting this red-headed flea beetle on a soybean leaf to cooperate. When I grabbed it to get a closer pic of its red head, their elytra is so hard and slick, it squirted out of my fingers like a slippery seed. :rolleyes: This release from the U's Jeff Hahn does a pretty good job of detailing who flea beetles are and what they do. They would take out entire fields of commercial mustard if not treated ahead of time back in the day. If you want a yellow sticky trap, I could mail you one since I'm in the business of mailing certain people chit... :whistling: :rotflmao:
Here's a photo of a sticky trap I removed from a corn field this afternoon with 113 corn rootworm beetles on it; 76 westerns and 37 northerns. Part of a study to ascertain what's happening with our Bt traits among other things. The things I won't do for entertainment. :doah:

I can remember Mom dusting the radishes when I was a kid. They'd emerge & the flea beetles would show up quickly in numbers. Without prompt treatment the radishes were goners. Have seen a few occasionally here over the years but nothing like those days. Was surprised to read they're capable of 2 generations. With the heat we've had this year that may be what's happening.

Stopped at the veggie stand that says they're from GR yday again for some more corn & they had some cukes, as well as some tomatoes so they picked some up. Brother asked the guy about his BER, he said it was a calcium deficiency also & would give them more water. :scratch:

Yup....that's Flea Beetles. Really tiny. They like radishes and any Cole Crop....Broccoli, Cauliflower etc. I put fine mesh netting over that stuff to try to keep them at bay.

Yup, in fact most appear to be pale striped flea beetles. If you blow the pic up, you can see some of them scattered around on the leaves.

Looked at my Monday planted fall radishes last nite but nothing has happened yet. Ditto on the snap peas. Watered them in but kinda waiting to see what this weeked weather holds before getting too carried away and watering them again. Soil was still damp enough that the seeds should germinate. Was a little overzealous this spring that way & didn't rely heavily enough on my weather data. :rolleyes:
Cucumbers are about to take over the ranch. Judging by all the flowers and little ones set on the vines, they'll overrun us sometime next week. The buttercup squash are cutting down on my lawn mowing. The vines have expanded far beyond expectations. Looks like a big green and yellow comforter spread on the sidehill, especially in the morning and evening. It hums too. Bees are going nuts in the canopy. If we get the kind of rain they're talking, no hail or an early frost, we should have abundant squash. If so, think I'll look for a pressure cooker and freeze a bunch. Love squash with Hope creamery butter, especially buttercups. :cool:

The way I deal with most of these garden issues can be summed up with one word. "VOLUME" I know not everyone has the space but for me I try to plant enough of things I want so if the rabbits, deer, drought, hail, deer, bugs, too much or too little calcium, too much or too little water, too hot or too cold, too many weeds or just neglect don't kill them all I will have plenty for me. Blossom end rot happens but I just pick those and whip them out in the trees and find a nice one. :rotflmao:

I will be planting 2 test varieties of red radishes from NDSU this coming week. My Daikons are just coming up. Have to be careful to watch for those little pests. :thumbs: :thumbs:

Checked the radishes planted Monday nite and most rows are coming up like gangbusters. No sign of the snap peas yet but the .48" rain so far should help their cause. Was bummed the wind knocked most of the pears out of the trees last nite. I may bring a few in & try to ripen them but when I've done that in the past, the results have been unrewarding. Oh well, the sheep love them, ripe or not. There were a few Patten's left in that tree. Haven't had a chance to eat one of that variety yet (it's the pollinator for the Parker). They're larger & are supposed to be tasty. If the wind doesn't knock them out or the squirrels & birds don't get them, might get a chance.

SO we are throwing our radishes out. The wife cleaned some up and they are in water. I popped a little one in my mouth and after chewing on it I had to spit it out. I have never done that before. They are brutal! Too hot to eat. Does the hot weather do that? Nice looking red ones. How about those white ones are they more mellow? I would like to plant one more batch of better to eat ones.

I just pulled the last of my white radishes, they are hot (according to the wife) I think they're fine. I'll plant another couple rows at the end of the month.

Yup mikey, seems like when it's hot & dry the radishes are hotter. Depends on variety too. Ranch dressing seems to cure all ills at least on the spring type radishes. Never tried it on those fall oriental radishes like China Rose but I doubt it would've helped. They were just plain nasty. Tongue was numb after trying to eat them.
Can row all the fall radishes now so that's a plus. Still no activity out of the snap peas yet. Been in the ground a week as of today so hope I didn't waste my time planting them. Forgot I have a few packets of greens left to put in. Have to schlep those in sometime this week. My busy social events calendar & the heat while picking veggies this past week didn't help. :doah:
Actually the wife was helping every day at the Freeborn Co. Fair too, in the horticulture building. There was a couple who have been running it for years and she passed away a few weeks ago, which left things somewhat in turmoil. The wife & Auntie Mar Mar had been helping there for several years so they stepped it up even more this go round. Exhibits were down slightly but they really made it look nice & had a special tribute display to Sue, the lady who passed away. :happy1:

Good news on the snap pea front. In the past 24 hrs. they're starting to show up in force. Forgot I didn't water them in until Tuesday nite so that was probably a factor. By the looks of things within a few days they should fill in the rows. Then the race is on then to see what they do based on the weather. The maturities range from 56 - 72 days. Finners crossed... :azn:

Yup follow soup directions and add carrots, caul., brocc.,beans....etc. bake at 350 until vegies are done. My mistake....can says Cheddar Soup. Add 1/3 Cup milk. If it isn't thick enough add Parmesan.

Thought I'd snap a shot of this before something happened to it, again. If you look real close at the leaves on the morning glory, you can see the effects (crinkled leaves) of the dicamba drift. New leaves are growing over the top of the damaged ones.

Here is some of my garden. Melons include 19 watermelons, 17 cantaloupe, 8 Galia, and 6 Santa Claus melons. Grandson picked 2 ripe cantaloupe this morning.
Lots of corn. 5 varieties. All are Augmented Supersweets. Started eating some last week.
8 varieties of tomatoes
3 kinds of potatoes, red beets, carrots, four 30 foot rows of strawberries.

No.....a big family that likes fresh produce. And I like growing it. One of my daughters has a home on a lake here with a rather large yard. She told me to plant lots and also plant an orchard....We have 5 apple trees, 3 plums, and a pear. Plus asparagus, 3 kinds of raspberries, 20 blueberry bushes, 4 juneberry bushes, and a grape vine. Keeps me busy in my retirement.

Great tip last year lps on freezing tomatoes. I've been trying to stay ahead of it, only so much salsa I can make in a week. Blt's weekly it seems but the 5 plants I have are going pretty strong. Thank God the zookini are slowing down, the peppers of all kinds, think I'll let em turn red, seem kinda sweeter that way. Thinking on doing a row or 2 of radishes soon and maybe some lettuce..

We have 6 Roma plants and 2 grape plants. That freezing the maters works great. The skin comes right off when you thaw them. No blanching or any of that. I got the idea from JB. Have done it ever since. Now I want to see if I can do that with green beans.

Here answering my own question. Just read that you can cut the green beans in half after you cut the ends off. Rinse them and let them dry on a towel. Put them in zip locs or vac pack bags and freeze. You can measure them if you want different size packs. Done deal here!!!

Seeing you mention aromas reminds no me. I used to grow Roma green beans. They were a flat version of green string beans and had a very nice flavor. I miss my gardening days but don’t have the time to put up with the critters and Mother Nature.

Our ratty @$$ string beans turned out way better than anticipated. Thought we'd be lucky to get a few meals. A few gallons later & they're still cranking them out. Must've been the sasquatch pee... :doah:

Done the refrigerator pickles many times. Love them. I also used to freeze our green beans to when we had a garden. Just picked them and put in ziploc then into the freezer. Easy peasy and they were good.

neighbors sweet corn turned out great once again this year,he said his pivet irrigation he bitched about (cost) saved his crop,I'll be stashing zip locks of super sweet corn away this weekend,inbetween chores around my place I've been putting off,figured I would get around to some day.

Yes, I thought my cukes were a bust after the deer ravaged them the second time. I built a half fast fence around them and now we have given more away than we have used, and we used a bunch.

First batch of sweet corn in finished. Second batch will be ready mid next week. Third batch is tasseling right now. Ready in 20 days.
Have pick 3 ripe cantaloupe. Grandkids devoured them. More ready next week.

Question here.....Does anyone here grow peas now in the fall? I have tried a number of times and they always get moldy. Every time. Never happens with peas planted in the spring.

Question here.....Does anyone here grow peas now in the fall? I have tried a number of times and they always get moldy. Every time. Never happens with peas planted in the spring.
I do not. Actually I don't plant peas, for what I get out of them and how often we use peas not worth it to me. I just go to the frozen food section.

Not the regular peas, but snap peas. Getting the vines to flower & set pods has been the main challenge. Seems like planting them here the end of July offers our best opportunity for success. Wet soils and delaying planting into August won't give them enough time especially if it's cold, cloudy and damp much of the fall. They've been hit and miss but when they hit, it's oh so worth it. :happy1:

Those are dill pickles done in a crock. My F-I-L use to make them when he was alive. There are like the best.

Like a week or more, might even be a month. I can't remember for sure. You have to be able to skim the stuff off of the top when it starts forming. Something I always wanted to make, but don't have time when working full time. He gave me the recipe. I could try and find it if you would like?

LPS, there are several ways to use cukes, I made these yesterday. theone on the left is a creamy cuke that takes onion, half and half vinegar and sugar. the one on the right is a summer frig cuke and takes sugar vinegar onion and celery seed.
also look and the canning thread, those are bigger cukes in the 2 gallon jar. if your interested i can post these recipes in the recipe thread!!!!

HEY DOTCH............ quick question. how long does it usually take to get results back for soil samples sent in??? think i sent them in about a week now. it was sent to someplace in wisconsin. strafford rings a bell??????/
went down to the country store/coop with my dirt, they gave me a kit to fill out and a little bag to put the dirt in. had to fill out a form...... lawn or garden, what kind of stuff i planted. etc etc. they said they used to be able to send them in, but where told the interested party needs to now........ whatever.
you had the option of 2 tests.........one was 16.45 for apparently a basic test, the other one was 20.45 for a more complex text.....i did the 20.45 one.
anyway just curious as the the time table of when i can expect results.....................

It comes down to interpretation of the results too. Some lab's low to medium test values are considered high by others. Some labs are in the business of helping dealerships sell fertilizer. Looking at the U's fertility rec's is usually a good place to start.

boober referred to it in the morning thread, but yea looking like my cukes are petering out also. been a disappointing garden year for me for sure. only thing going like hot cakes are my jalepeno peppers. looks to me like by the end of the week a couple more mater plants will get yanked out.

Our cukes are still going strong but our first try at pole beans didn't pan out too well. At first they were really growing but then they slowed down a lot. Beans are big on one end but small at the other end. I wonder if I needed to water them more whilst it was so hot. The maters did good next to them. ??? Will try them again next year. Maybe sprinkle some 10-10-10 near them.

I cheated this year, after the first round of 10-10-10 the plants got liquid miracle grow through out summer. Not sure if that was it but everything did really well this year, except the pole beans.

Need to finish picking the last of the 1st string bean planting, then toss the plants over the fence to the sheep to establish some greens. For as ratty as they looked early on, the plants really produced well. Sheep are livin' high off the hog lately. Devouring lots of sweet corn husks & cobs, overripe cukes and string beans plus any weeds that pi$$ me off. They're not starvin' that's for sure. Weeded the snap peas & winter radishes thorougly yesterday. Lots of waterhemp & purslane in places. Getting it out of the way now usually ensures it'll stay clean the rest of the fall. Water them tonite. Cukes are still at it. Almost hate to see how many there are still out there. Not going to water them. They're on their own. :rolleyes:

Did a walkabout this a.m. & snapped a pic of the morning glories by the well complete with the four o'clocks that filled in behind them. Hummingbirds are going nuts out there! Noticed a new color pattern in one four o'clock plant, variegated white colored blooms. Oddly enough, there are solid colored pink and white flowers on the same plant. :scratch: Kinda unique and pretty at the same time. Will try to remember to save the seed from that plant.

i did the same thing boober........... i used more epsom salt on the maters though!!!!!!!! however i'm convinced my grass clippings and its residue where my issues!!!!!!!

Green beans are just about done, but we got a ton of the little buggers. Gave a bunch away. Cukes and Zucchini are still going good. Kolrabie didn't do well this year. I have a ton of green mators, only ate one "orange" one so far. :puke:
Beets are still doing good, eating a meal once a week. Carrots are good too.
Gonna put a couple rows of radish in soon.

Opted not to pull the beans yesterday. Looks like one more picking still on the vines. Picked 2 grocery bags full in the afternoon. Late planting is flowering like mad so will be a few days on that. Sheep don't care. They devoured a couple 5 gallon buckets of overgrown cukes I tossed over the fence. I hauled a couple more buckets worth that were decent into the house. Amazing how the cucumber vines bounced back this morning after relieving them of all those cukes. After chores, I had a small opened sleeve of osmocote so fertilized the radishes with that & some urea, then watered it in. This garden is whuppin' my @$$! :shocked:

Kind of, but the ones I have don't have that many different colors??? What throws me off is there kinda shaped like a Roma, but taste 10 times better.

So many varieties of 'maters out there. My favorite little 'mater are the grape ones, supersweet 100, and midnite snacker. I always had WAY too many of 'em , though, gave a ton away to folks!

I had my son ask the couple he got them from, they said there called tiger tomatoes. If I want to grow them either I order them on line or not devour them and save the seeds . Oh joy :rotflmao:.

Didn't tske you for such a quitter. As rough as my cukes and California Wonders looked earlier, they really came around with some TLC. I did have a Much Nacho pepper that just up and died for some reason.

usually i'm not. just beem such a disappointing year garden wise. being retired i spent more time then ever before babying the garden with all the TLC i had. :embarrassed: :doah: i could water in the evening then in the morning i'd pull carrots and kalarabi and the ground around it was like i never watered. and i dumped enough water around the plants till it puddled.
the cukes were not getting bigger, they were turning a bit yellow, then they taste bitter. and no others where forming on the plant. the green peppers....didnt get very big, they would start getting rotten on the bottom and the ones i pulled had no peppers left on them.
usually i nurse that stuff till it freezes!!!!!!
even my carrots arent getting very big, the kalarbi, i havent had one yet that was bigger then a tenis ball!!!!!!!

Getting the rain the last few days here...too little, too late? Should help the drought, at least, and the gardens some. Lotsa thunder and lighning right now, fair rain. Oh oh. Another batch just slid by a couple miles to the north. Probably too late for the crops here anyway. If the weather terrorists are close to being right about what is coming it might be good that we've had zilch so far.

Tore out the 1st planting of string beans last nite and tossed them over the fence to the sheep. Tilled up the area quick & broadcast seeded the fall greens into it along with another package of white globe radishes I'd forgotten about. One nice thing about fall seeding is the weeds aren't near the issue they are the rest of the year. Snap peas are moving along as are the earlier seeded radishes. The one variety of string beans (Top Crop) was flowering like mad the other day so suspect we'll be overrun by them shortly. The Tendergreens will need to be looked at tonite. Looks like the cukes may start to slow down as the flowers aren't near as prolific as they were just a few days ago. The bees also slow down when it gets into Sept. Fine by me. We've given away tons of cukes but there are plenty in the fridge to last a while yet.

Tomatoes have been decent this year. Lately I've been having a problem with the dang grasshoppers munching on them. They seem to like my Black Cherry and Giant Belgium the best. Overall my biggest winner has been the Brandyboy. It's a hybrid that is suppose to have the fine taste of a Brandywine. I don't plant many hybrids but this one I will plant again next year.
Been a super year for peppers. Pepperpalooza is set for Sept. 1st.

Peppers like it got.Had my best luck in 5 gal pails on the deck, where they really got hot. I'd water and mist 'em twice a day. These last ones got 62 green bells off of 2 plants... :shocked:

I actually dried most of those, and some of my jalepenos in my dehydrator, then ran them thru my food processor. Used 'em in my chili and sauces. Tip: Do not dry cayenne and jalepenos in a fan drier inside the house.... :cry: whooo

Lots of ripe melons the last 2 weeks. !8 pound yellow watermelon the biggest. Grand kids are devouring the cantaloupe, Galia melons and Santa Claus melons.
Sweet corn every other day. American Dream the latest one. Grand kids were selling it for $5 a dozen. Doesn't last long. A yellow variety called Vision up next.
Have put out Hornet traps.... they are into everything sweet.

I have used both pop and beer. Beer beats pop hands down. Besides I drink sugar free pop. Gotta have sugar in it to attract them.

when we camped we used both. we'd take a 20 oz pop bottle, cut the top off, add pop or beer then put that top back in upside down. worked great, they could crawl in but not out!!!!!

yup.....that is exactly what I did. 2 had quite a few in it and 1 was almost full of hornets. Still to many in my crab apples. Now starting to move over to fall raspberries. Have to put up a Shepard's Hook with a trap hanging from it next to them.

Picked another shopping bag full of string beans tonite then turned around and picked another couple 5 gallon bucket of cukes, ~half of which went over the fence to the sheep. So much for the cukes slowing down. Still plenty of little ones out there yet too. :confused: Some of the early August planted radishes are getting nice bulbs under them. Need to be thinned & weeded in places so curious to see how they're coming. The earliest snap pea variety looks like it's getting some flower buds. Finners crossed. Nummy! :hubba: The fall greens are starting to poke thru here and there. I wanna take a page out of Barry's book and grow some lettuce on the patio railing. Once the leaves fall there's a lot of nice sunshine to be had and the planter(s) could easily be brought inside until the inevitable of course. The rate it's been going the past several years that could be early December. We've had garden tomatoes at Thanksgiving time, why not fresh salad? :happy1:

There are 15 hills of cukes. After going cuke-less a couple years back, I promised myself I'd never let that happen again. Was pretty sure they wouldn't all make it especially given the bunny, striped gopher and wild turkey population. Even the year old seed I planted grew! Between all the stretching, hauling buckets and whipping overripe cukes over the fence, I get good exercise. I have more cukes than I know what to do with and I can share with those less fortunate. Found out over the weekend Auntie Mar Mar has been funneling some of what I've given her to her 99 year old neighbor guy. She told me how much he has enjoyed the fresh garden raised vegetables. Can't ask for more than that.

Harvested the first batch of fall radishes last nite. Didn't disappoint. Had the typical fall sweetness to them along with the radish bite. Some don't care for the bite but I guess if I wanted a radish without any bite, I'd eat a turnip or a rutabeggar! 🤔 Noticed that sweetness with most of the veggies so far this fall including the string beans and the maters. The cukes to a lesser extent perhaps but with enough ranch for dipping, I really don't care. 👍

well, the garden is starting to wind down. i did plant some radishes again and am pleasantly surprised they are doing ok!!!!!!
only thing left is the kalarabi..there finally turning out to be something, carrots will be toast by midweek. pulled the jalepenos, got them sticking outta me ears!!!!! few green peppers and the tomatoes. there taking forever to ripen lately. i see a good batch of pickled green maters in my future!!!!!! :happy1:

Cukes are done here, its been a great year for them. The tomatoes and peppers are doing well, I hope the frost holds off for a while. I planted two hills of giant pumpkins for the grandkids, I'm guessing one of them is close to 200 lbs.

Picked another gallon bag of Reb-r-roo's faves, the string beans tonite. Then I decided to look at the radishes. Holy hookshot, Batman! They changed in the past week. Wound up with a couple Cool Whip containers and 2 margarine tubs full. Sweet but with a nice burn to them. With some crushed red pepper cheese curds added to the mix, I will stink tomorrow. 🤭 Oh ya, the sheep love the radish tops. Betting they will stink tomorrow too! 🐑

Ya Barry, they're usually happy when there's stuff to eat getting tossed over the fence. I'd thrown some radishes that had bolted in their pasture last nite and they made a beeline this a.m. to get after them. We'll have pumpkins again this year to feed them later on. The ewes in the picture won't wind up in our freezer but some of their offspring might if they haven't already. 🥩 😋

String beans keep a long time in the crisper too. I need to attempt to freeze some of those tonite. Been many moons since I last did that. Found the blancher thingy, now just need to be careful so I don't run out of ice to make G&T's!🍸
Running my errands, I stopped at FF and chanelled my inner Barry and picked up some black seeded simpson lettuce along with mesclun mix. Can entertain thoughts of putting a planter on the porch railing for fresh greens. Now just so long as I don't start building fishing tackle or worse, making pillows in my basement like his close relative...🛏

Picked what I hope are the last of the string beans tonite. Of course if I yanked them all out & tossed them over the fence to the sheep I could all but guarantee it! :happy1: Picked the first two fall snap peas. They were down low on the plants & if it rains like they're talking they would've been in the mud. OMG were they sweet! They were the Fleet Farm special el cheapo variety too so can't wait to see what the Cascadia's & Sugar Daddy's taste like. All 3 varieties are blooming so hoping the rain and cooler weather brings them on. Radishes too. The winter radishes like the red meats and German giants would really benefit from a good rain and cooler weather.

We planted green peppers in our earth box on the deck again this year. They do great doing that. There are so many peppers on it there is hardly room for leaves. Beautiful peppers too. When we planted them in our raised bed garden they didn't do well at all.

Might be more by accident than by design here. Both the Sugar Daddy & Cascadia varieties I planted have good resistance to powdery mildew. I have no idea on the el cheapo variety I planted but so far so good. In the new garden area they're in full sun all day. Even with the heavy dews they dry off quickly. When I planted them in the old garden area that had full sun only part of the day, they tended to avoid it on the fall planted peas. Spring planted they were in trouble by July especially in wetter seasons. Too much shade.

Finished freezing the last of the string beans last nite. Looking forward to having them over the course of the winter. Wondered about the wisdom at first of taking the time to freeze them when they're on sale sometimes in the store for 3 packages for $5. When I was blanching the beans I taste-tested them. If they taste anything like that when they're fully cooked it'll be well worth it. Never had store bought beans that tasted that good. :happy1: More radishes to process tonite after I get rid of the dipstick coming to get a lamb. :rolleyes:

he told us to give 'em got rid of the BER on the tomatoes & we're still picking quite a few. Although they're not ripening near as fast the last week or so with the cooler nights. Might even have to can some or we got a salsa recipe from the neighbors wife we might try too.

Locals are sayin' cuz of the drought, apple crop is way down. The local orchards here don't have the pick'yer-own this year, just the already bagged becuz of the "shortage''. Stopped at a local country orchard the other day for some and squash. Honeycrisp there were $15 a bag.... :censored: Guess I'll wait and do the single ones at the grocery store. :rolleyes:

Same here Art, at least the ones the squirrels haven't plucked. We had a few SnowSweets but they've suffered the same fate. :rolleyes: Had diddly squat on the Haralson tree so think I'll head to Johnson's orchard at Lemond some weekend when they're open. Talked to the owner a few months back & sounded like they'd have some. Lived here 36 years and never been there. Place is only 4 or 5 miles up the road so would be a nice stop on a weekend cruise. He's got a restored apple red Ford 1/2 ton pickup, ~ a '53 I think. Pretty little unit.
Harvested more radishes last nite and checked on the progress of the winter radishes. They're starting to make a move although appears I'll need to water them if we don't start getting more rainfall. The snap peas are looking like we'll have a picking soon. They too might benefit from a light watering. Will be tossing the string bean plants over the fence so I won't be tempted to pick any more. Found a couple last nite & promptly ate them. Also found about a half dozen more eating size cucumbers! 🥒 Tossed another 15 - 20 overgrown ones I found under some squash leaves that hadn't died back yet. The sheep were happy campers this a.m. Checked on the progress of the greens patch I broadcast seeded. Aside from the purslane scattered around in it, there's some interesting looking salad making material. Some more white globe radishes scattered around in it as well. Just thinking about all the money I'll save on stool softener this fall... :whistling:

I accidentally let our string less green beans get away, picked several batches as they came but last week their were lots to grab and I let em get too big. Grabbed another ice cream pail of maters yesterday, 2 acorn squash ( 5 smaller ones left yet) and enough red serranos with a few red jalapenos to make some sauce. Lots of green hot peppers yet hanging, if they don't change looks like I'll have green hot sauce then. Didn't have any used sauce bottles so some 1/2 pints had to do.

Picked a quart bag of snap peas last nite. Just stuffed them in a bag w/o cleaning the blossoms off. Could try to freeze some if there are enough I suppose but they're so tasty fresh, doubt they'll last that long. :undecided:

Ok fella experts, I need an idea, thoughts on this. Spring of 2020 I pulled this stump out of the lake up north along our shoreline. As I was letting it dry out I had a brilliant idea hit me. I brought it home, hollowed it out and put a hen - n- chick in it just like you see now.
Come fall a double bagged those grocery store plastic bags, packed it with leaves, put it over the top and bungee corded it around the stump.
Do this spring it looked pretty tough and died. Not sure if it had something to do with shadow chewing on it, the long stretch of bitter cold we had or just plain didn't get any air
Should I just leave it be or try covering it again??? And with what!

Say Dotch, have you ever eaten those tillage radishes? A couple years ago I dug some up at a in a neighbors field (with an invitation of course). I thought they were very good.

The daikons tended to break off when dug & were bland flavored compared to the red meats (watermelon radishes). I liked the texture of the latter better as well. More crisp like a kohlrabi & sweeter in flavor initially with the radish bite following. Still letting them grow a while before harvesting to let them get full sized & flavored. Seems like a couple hard frosts help their cause. Also have some German giants that I'm letting enlarge.
What I've been harvesting so far are early August planted spring radishes, white globe & cherry belle. There's also a purple radish, sweet something or other, that I won't plant for fall again. Sorta woody & not anything special other than their color to me anyway. This project has been interesting. Where they're a tad too thick & I harvest those that are ready, the plants left behind come on rather than bolting with a little watering. The daylength & weather cooling down probably has a lot to do with that.

Also picked some salad greens & a few yellow pear tomatoes. Prolly the biggest find tho was 3 cukes that still looked edible. They were very edible. Add some snap peas, a couple smaller radishes & a leftover pork chop; supper was served. No problem with the squash other than outward appearance. Flavor was awesome & it was relatively dry textured. The season seems to have a lot to do with the latter & we prefer them like that. They soak up more Hope creamery butter that way! :happy1:

Cold here this morning.....35 degrees. I'm going to start digging potatoes. still have them and carrots in the ground. Carrots are sweeter after some frosts. Over the course of the growing season they store up energy in the form of starches. When temperatures start to drop, they convert these starches into sugars, which act as an anti-freezing agent for their cells. Thus getting sweeter.

They just won't quit. I'm pretty much burnt out on tomatoes but they just keep producing and if it doesn't freeze soon there are lots of green ones still on the vines. :confused:

I'm going in wish me luck. I usually wait for a frost or two to dig up the canna bulbs but with the rain coming and hunting time, I will dig them today.
That's a 6 foot chain link fence in front of them. I may use the chain saw to cut the stems.

Yesterday 5he warden said she was going to pick some bell peppers to freeze. She didn't make it too far. She got twenty of them off the first plant, that should be enough for winter she says. All our peppers did well this year. The tomatoes are still doing well also.

Yes, they are beautiful and easy to grow. But they do take some work. The bulbs are not hardy and if they freeze they will rot and not grow. You need to dig and store inside the bulbs for planting in spring after danger of frost is gone. The bulbs usually multiply by a factor of four. Meaning if you plant a 5 gallon bucket full you can dig enough bulbs to fill four buckets. I usually dig half and plant maybe 2/3 of them. For the record I completed phase 3 and all the bulbs I intend to keep are boxed and in the house. I will leave the boxes open for a couple weeks to allow moisture to escape.

Haven't dug any cannas here yet. They still look like they're in mid-August form as well they should. They broke the all time record for GDU accumulation at the SROC in Waseca yesterday. The record was set back in 1988, one hot SOB, which was 2956. The question is, will we break 3000? One thing I tried with the cannas this year was deadheading them once the heads were done blooming, in an attempt to get more blooms. Some reading indicated it might make them produce more & bigger bulbs too. Not that there was a problem before in that dept. but I thought it seemed to make them bloom more profusely.
Picked a gallon bag of snap peas last nite before the rain. Better than fishing them out of the mud. :happy1:

I have one big plant of Serrano's that I had to put a mater cage on it early on, with a smaller one bought by mistake. Anyhow this sucker just keeps kicking em out, between the quarts of hot sauce lately , salsa earlier and dishing em to the neighbors I'm bringing more to work and let the southern folk fight for the rest, I left some on yet if I can talk the mrs on making some Verde sauce. 4 plants each of bell and jalapeno yet but the rest got yanked today..

I have never done that in the fall Dotch. But our green peppers do great in the Earth Box on the deck. The plants are just full of peppers. We just harvested them last week. We also had some grape tomatoes that did great in buckets on the deck. I made a bench to set all of this on so the dogs don't eat them all.

And if I don't, I'll have seed to start a planter box or an early garden planting next spring. :undecided: I did finally pull the pin on the string beans. I'd threatened to yank them all out earlier but hadn't found enough daylight hours to do it. Barely did tonite. Started pulling them just before sunset & realized there were still a lot of edible looking string beans on the plants yet. Grabbed a gallon container and picked the beans off before they went over the fence. Filled the thing up and some of the results are featured on tonite's "What's on the Grill Folks" thread. Man they were good! Best of all, there were enough to give Auntie Mar Mar a bag tomorrow when she & Gregory go for a ride to the orchard in the Studebaker. :happy1:

Our first attempt at pole beans didn't go great. We got some but they seemed to get flimsy as they got bigger. It was so darn hot for awhile. Maybe they needed more water. Will try them again next year.

The just refused to quit so I finally pulled the plug on the tomatoes. After pulling the cages and vines I picked up some that looked nice so that's probably the end for the year. Fried green tomatoes anyone. :laugh:

I did the same today DE, talking rain so might as well yank everything while it's dry. I've done everything I can with the peppers this year here even gave a bunch away. Thinking on freezing some to make more sauce yet, I'd sure like to dry some out but our dehydrator takes forever. What else can one do ?

I froze the peppers we need to make salsa, we froze tomatoes when we had too many throughout the season. I have a dozen or so tomatoes ripening inside. Gardening is pretty much done except for a bit more cleanup.

I have pulled all my tomatoes and peppers. We had temps in the 20's the last 3 mornings. Supposed to rain all day tomorrow. So I also tilled everything today.
All done except for pruning and burying grapevines. Also have to prune back my fall raspberries and cover my strawberries once the ground freezes.
Been a good garden year. Lots of everything. And lasted until just a few days ago. Only problem this year was the hoards of Hornets. I killed hundreds of them in my traps. They still did a lot of damage.

Gotta assess what kind of frost injury the snap peas might've sustained while I was gone. Guessing that they're fine & I can harvest another bunch. Gave some to our Canadian friends who were tickled to get them. Some of the winter radishes are probably ready to pull. Might have to wait until after the rain for that.

Snap peas apparently didn't like the 26 degree low when I was gone. Found a few but think the vines can go over the fence to the woollies. Sampled a couple red meat or watermelon radishes. Crisp & tasty, think I'll work on harvesting them this week.

Ya, think I planted them the 1st week in August. Might work well behind a string bean, lettuce or pea planting. I had to tear up a small hunk of sod to make room for them. These aren't as large as some years. They didn't get much rainfall until late August & they weren't thinned properly in places. A buddy gave me some about 10 years ago and I was hooked. Hadn't grown any for a few years with the garden changeover so it's nice to have some again. No stool softener needed. Almost pulled a Joe Biden coming from the barn this a.m.! :shocked:

Think I'll call it a season in the garden. Hauled 75 buttercup squash into the garage last week. Dug all the winter radishes and pulled the last fall planted spring-type radishes yesterday. Had to dig the winter radishes as they developed quite a taproot and were well anchored. Will need to be more prudent about thinning them as there were areas of row that were too thick. Was getting towards dark so didn't get a good read on the salad greens other than they looked wilted after being frozen perhaps too much. The snow and ice in them might've been a clue. Sheep won't mind. Think I'll punt on the salad green planter project for now. Weather needs to show me something before investing much time in it. Still have a few tomatoes worth eating but better do it soon. They won't last forever.
Not done until they're cleaned up and put away.

Thanks mikey. My back feels it after standing on the concrete washing them up. The nicer, larger ones are down deeper in the pails. There are 20+ lbs. of radishes there.
Would still like to run the chitspreader across the garden yet this fall. Prolly won't be able to get it worked in tho. :undecided: It can wait till spring unless the weather provides an opportunity. Have some aged stuff that would spread nice & evenly.

Am envious Ken but remember how much work they were growing up. Well worth it tho especially with whipped cream from our Jersey milk cow. Same cow that destroyed Dad's grape arbor. God he was pissed! I need to source a Honeygold apple tree & am probably dreaming but would love to find a Patten greening. Heirloom tree but located some in WI a few years back. Ultimate pie, sauce & crisp apple. Might add another pear while I'm at it altho roony has all the good pears 🍐. :pouty:
Froze the last squash I plan on freezing yesterday. There are 10 qt. bags stuffed full so that ought hold the 2 of us. Nuked a bag of string beans last nite I froze back in late Sept. Needed a veggie to go with some shrimp & rice pilaf. Very tasty! :cool:

Raspberries are easy to take care of. You just have to know what to do with them. Strawberries on the other hand are much tougher. Again....just know what to do with them. Gardening and fishing are my main activities during the summer. Keeps me occupied and having something to do. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:

Garden plot here will eat up a little more pasture & double to 40' x 120' in size next year. The sheep more than get that back opening up the windbreak for them. The tomatoes will move to the main garden. Want to incorporate onions, melons, gourds and Indian corn back into the equation. Vine crops take a lot of real estate. Think we can cut back on the cukes & squash a tad. They were sure beautiful tho and the squash I didn't freeze are still keeping well. Keep getting jars of pickles from nice folks who got cukes from us too. Like having the fall snap peas & winter radishes in the mix. Works well after string beans and can plant late crop string beans where the early crop peas & salad green were. Had a few squash vine borers appear last year so we'll have to deal harshly with them before we get too carried away.

Ye all she did was raid it. :rotflmao: she is engaged now and living in sin, so they kinda have there own garden. They do however occasionally raid my full canning ingredients.
I gave 4 qts of my pickled green tomatoes the past week to the kids.

Sounds like more than it really is Barry. If you've done a good job of initial weed control the vine crops take over their space, especially pumpkins, squash and gourds. If you're a weed like waterhemp, lambsquarter, or even a purslane trying to get enough light, nutrients and moisture under that canopy to survive, good luck with that.

we recieved a Jungs catalog s few weeks ago. i looked through it but nuttin tripped my trigger.
a few weeks ago i was meandering through fleet farm, kinda looking for seeds........i expect them to be out on shelves in about another month!!

You get 2 small- medium sized packets of seeds of a variety. Plant them and compare the 2. At the end of the season compare the two and report your findings. $1.50 for each trial and $5.50 for shipping. You can have up to 7 trials. You can look back at the trials for at least the last 10 years and see what people are saying about varieties.
Last year I compared 2 sweet corns, 2 carrots, 2 cantaloupe, 2 peas, and 2 purple beans.
