Efficiency in the keeping track of everything.  So three digits are gravel or etc.  Makes sense.  I had to keep track of every hour of mowing on every road I was on in a day and sometimes that may have been 10 or 12 different roads.  Hauling gravel had to keep track of each load on each road too just like dozing, excavating, filling trucks, sweeping, replacing culverts etc.    If you are curious ask your buddy if all state aid roads are under 50.  That is probably a state wide thing.   Counties can switch road numbers to get more state aid on certain roads.  I really enjoyed working with the highway guys.

A year ago when we had the meeting about our roads the ole county commissioner said that all roads under 50 are state aid highways.
