Kabetogama/Namakam Fishing Report May 18, 2009

A mixed week of weather equals mixed results--one day 70 degrees, next day in the 20's, struggling to reach 40 degrees.

Today, Sunday is a great start for the week, sunny and topping out in the 60's. Normal weather has arrived by the looks of the forecast.

Anglers still continue to find the most catchable fish in shallow water, that being less than 12'.

Lots of spawning females--reports indicate the spawning cycle is nearly over in Kabetogama.

The male counterparts are being caught in the spawning areas, as well as, deeper shoreline edges at say 25 - 35'.

Bobber fishing with minnows or jig and minnow presentations is still the best offerings.

No word on crappies, but time is right for a good spring bite. Sullivan Bay, Old Dutch Bay, and/or Rudder Bay in Namakan may be good spots to try.

Northern pike are being caught randomly on live bait, no set pattern.

Walleye anglers could fish shallow areas like Tom Cod and Peterson Bays on west-Kabetogama; Martin Islands, Mud, and Daily Bay on mid-Kabetogama.

Deeper areas that have been turning over some keepers are the Sugarbush Island channel, again the Martin Islands, and outside creek inlets and outlets.

Dark colored jigs--black, green, and blues--worked well last week in our stained, wind-churned waters.
