Title: Puppy picks
Post by: LPS on November 11/25/20, 04:44:32 PM
Ok this is the about 6 month old male dog at the Humane Society here in town.  What a cute dog.  He is a stray so they know nothing about him.  Seems like someone dropped him off in the area.  They don't know if he is pointer, or what.  Looks like a Walker coonhound to my brother who used to raise and hunt them.  Maybe is a cross of spaniel and something.  ????   They said he is real mellow and pretty quiet.  I have first dibs after they have him neutered next week.  I would like to visit him again first.

If he gets "fixed" he is more likely to stick around home.

Is he chipped? Or going to be chipped?

I agree with HD, on both counts...  the first one mostly...

I could care less what it costs to get chipped, I will go for it.   As mentioned wandering is the biggest issue with pups and young dogs.  I am hoping Buddy will help teach him to stick around.

If you pull the trigger lps you can always do the dog ancestry test, my kid did that with a pooch he got.  The results were pretty interesting,  turns out a pure bred beotch in heat got out and did the deed with a mutt, it had it all broke down on what its mixed with.

That is interesting Bobber.  I would do that.  I am not for sure taking him but I do like the looks of him.  I really want a lab or Golden but the wife said I can't spend that much money on a dog.  I said well how about if I find a good deal for a thousand bucks.  She said that is still too much.

I looked into those this morning. Temping. Found some chocolate labs for 600 bucks to.

Googled a few humane society too. One had what looked like an older yellow lab.

These are the two pups the lady in Pine River has available.  The light colored one is still available.  I too the darker one.  The mother is a black lab and 70 lbs.  The father is a Golden Retriever and is 95 lbs.  They are both great family dogs and the pups are real friendly too.

So far we are naming ours Cooper.   I read a thing that said to go outside and call for your dog using the name you are thinking of.  See if it sounds good to you.  Good thing we don't have close neighbors.  I was testing names as we had a fire today.

so now that we are going to be having a dog, the question is what dog food.

LPS, what brand dog food do you plan on feeding it????? the gal i talked to was pretty adamanat about feeding the diamond brand.

our sheltie we feed the kibble and bits because of the softer pieces because she has not many teeth, she also gets 1/3 of a can of pedergee food each morning.

i'm not set one way or another but some of those dog foods out there seem to just run threw them and there turds are grease bombs. i've fed pedegree, and purina and like purina  because most places always have it.

any opinions??????????????/ i know, its like a chevy or ford, ski-doo r polaris conversation, but...............

The lady sent me a pic of the Diamond Puppy food.  We will use that first if we can find it.  Or else order it online.  Then may switch to something that they sell here as he gets older.  We have always fed Tuffys Supreme.  My dogs have lived as long or longer than other dogs we have known.  May be more poop but it you fed the same amount of any kind you will get the same amount of poop.  I guess they feed dogs less of the expensive stuff.  I wonder if the dog is hungry or do they just get used to it?  Some of that food is $2 a lb so a 30 lb bag is over $50.  That doesn't go to far with 2 labs.  I think I pay $22 for a 40 lb bag of Tuffy's Supreme.  They sell it here too so that is part of the program.

What do you other guys feed?  Do you feed less so the price is similar?

same thing here. I've typically fed pedigree or purina.  But since fleet farm is so friggin unpredictable with what they have I always get the purina. Always seem to have that. I don't like changing dog food.

Way back when I had my black lab, spike, I bought the sprout dog food from fleet farm for bear bait. I had some leftover, figured he'd eat anything. :rotflmao: Yea he wouldn't touch it  :rotflmao: fed it to the critters up north. :rotflmao:

I used to feed Purina but was hard to get here in town.  Have fed the Tuffy's Supreme for about 14 years now.  Less poop would be nice though.  Especially in town.  We have lots of room here but in the winter they always go in the same area and gets ugly.  I plow it back further when it snows.  LOL

We fed ours taste of the wild for a long time, until all the crap came out with grain free food not being good for them.  Switched to purina pro plan which has been ok but the flavors are hit or miss with the dogs. Our dogs are real active with that said ive been considering trying the purina sport with more protein and fat %..

Please stay away from the grain free foods. Labs and especially Golden’s are susceptible to dilated cardiomyopathy. I know because my dog was fed grain free Blue Buffalo wild, and developed DCM.
The vet put him on a different food for 6 months and his heart returned to the normal range. Also stay away from the cheap foods like Sprout or Old Roy. And if you don’t want your dog to develop a good case of the winds, don’t feed your dog Purina dog chow. Purina pro plan is supposed to be good.

OK, my $.02 worth:

Lots of good dog foods out there. Some dogs are fussy. Mom's dog liked Beneful. Was softer and Mom could handle the smaller bags. I agree about the grain free thing too. If you've ever had a Lab on a farm, they go out and harvest corn to eat all by themselves! Border collies love eating sheep poop. Most dogs do.  I can mail you some more glenn!  :rotflmao:

Our border collies have run on Diamond Performance since '97. Ruby eats it every day. She'll be 11 in 4 months and she wears us out. We started her on Diamond Puppy food as well. Many of the stock dog & sled dog breeders were feeding National when we got our first border. High energy & protein, low feeding rate, not a lot of stool. Ideal if you're gonna keep a dog kenneled. I checked into it. No distributors anywhere close. I would've had to buy it a pallet at a time. For one dog not an option. Diamond Performance or Professional as I believe it was called at the time was suggested as an alternative by the breeder. More stool but we've got ~17 acres for dogs to poop. Doesn't stop Ruby from pooping in the front yard.

Congrats Glenn and LPS.  I’ve fed my last 3 GSP’s diamond.  Started on Diamond puppy and feed the extreme athlete during hunting season and the regular hi energy anything else.  $25 for a 50 pound bag and I feed 4 cups a day per the instructions on the bag.  He’s a lean mean hunting machine just like his owner.  They always have it at menards, runnings or fleetfarm.

Yea Yea Yea. :rotflmao:

Back in my younger years I was throwing them around 2 at a time.

pretty much, i do intend to ask questions. the lady said they have good hunting backgrounds, even some shed hunting.

does this concern you??????? by that i mean maybe issues with the dogs? i did google them and they seem to be a legit breeder.

:pouty: well there appears to be overly dramatic drama over the " bear" name we've picked for the dog. Apparently my granddaughter had a dog named bear with her former boyfriend and he wouldn't let her have it when they parted ways, now she's all emotional.

Now her mother is sticking her effin nose in our business and it's not the first time. :angry2: and it really torques me off.

Honestly I wasn't real sure about the name and we've been throwing it around a bit, but haven't made up our mind yet. But time is getting short. :pouty: :bonk:

Glenn, what the heck did we bet ourselves into here.  The wife works so I am the full time puppy wrangler during the day time.      We have a plastic 7 sided playpen thing that is working nice for him.  It won't last long before he is climbing out of it though.  Buys me a little time to talk to you guys.  Man he eats like a horse.  The lady told me she keeps the food bowl full so they can eat whenever they want to.  ??  I think we will come up with a 3 times a day program so we can anticipate poop time more accurately.   Well gotta go.

Yup he has an odor.  She had them in their own room the size of a pickup with wood shavings.  Said they have never been in a house or outside.  Cooper loves the snow.  He didn't make a peep overnight neither.  Has done all of his pooping and peeing outside so far.   :happy1: :happy1:   Bath day for him tomorrow since the wife has the day off.   :sleazy:  Super nice puppy but Buddy doesn't see him as a friend yet.  He avoids him.  Snapped at him once when Cooper grabbed his tail.  Didn't hurt him at all but scared him.

I got the one with Shadow on the seat of your truck.  I didn't know you texted.   :rotflmao: :rotflmao:  I added you as a contact.  Cooper was pretty good but started whining around midnight so the wife took him out and he pooped and peed.   :happy1: :happy1:  I read on the dog food pkg and a 20 pound pup gets 3 cups of that Diamond food a day.  We are going to feed a morning, noon, and supper time schedule so he is all pooped before bed time in his kennel.  Had one little pee accident in the house this morning.  That is the first accident in the house.  SO far.   Cooper weighs in at 20lb and 7 oz.  When they are 30 lbs they get 4 cups I think.

Hey LPS, my granddaughter, daughter of my daughter was over. Came with her boyfriend, who happens to be going to school for computer science. He was able to somehow send the pictures of our pups parents pictures to Walgreens.

I'll be getting 5 X 7's of mom and dad. :sleazy: :happy1:

Oh yea my granddaughter is almost done with school. Going to be an elementary teacher.

So Glenn, Cooper weighed in at 21.4 lbs last Sunday and today he weighed in at 25 lbs.  He is not as chubby as he was.  Getting taller and longer of course.  He is really getting around outside too.  He loves his food so I upped him a little each feeding.
Still pees in the house now and then if we don't keep an eye on him but he usually goes to the sliding glass door when he has to go.  He even has barked a couple of times to go out.   :happy1: :happy1:  We are loving the heck out of him and Buddy seems to be mellowing some too so all is good.  Bob isn't afraid of him at all even though Cooper barks at her and tries to chase her.  She sits on a kitchen chair under the table and hisses at him.  Funny as heck!  Hope you and Shadow are getting along Ok too!

Yes our pup gets crazy after eating and just goes nuts when he knows it is feeding time.  He loves the stuff.  We will of course feed the bag we have to him and then decide what to do next.

Those pooches like dynamite fellas!! Any thoughts on having them fixed yet? The whipper snappers golden retriever was fixed right away and doesn't lift his leg. The lab that's not fixed pisses on everything .. even the retriever gets a golden shower now and then.

mines definetly getting fixed. we talked to the vet and they say ya gotta wait at least 6 months. AND i've been told for health reasons to wait till there 9 months old!!!!!!

This is fun watching the "puppy" saga unfold for you guys. Our only batch of Border Collie pups resulted in one black & white rough coat we wound up keeping because he had a swallowing issue. Pretty normal otherwise at least initially. I took him to the vet at ~ 6 months to get him fixed so he'd be a "squatter" and not a "leg lifter". After they did the surgery and had me pick him up, they told me to keep him calm when I took him out to the truck. Border Collie? Calm? Ya right. I opened the front door so I could put a towel down for him to lay on on the front seat. He was used to riding in the back seat so he jumped in over the top of me, flew over the top of the front seat and into the back seat, panting with his tongue hanging out like he always did. Yep, he sure looks calm alright... :doah:

I will get Cooper fixed as soon as I can and have heard the 6 month mark is a good target so that's when I have them done.  I think that dogs, horses, etc. learn a lot from the animals around them.  If a dog sees another dog raise his leg to pee he is more apt to also.  Once they get older it is easier to squat.  Cooper is my 6th lab.  They have all been great pets and friends.  They have all been males.  I have waited to have a couple of them neutered.  One I bred to some females and it went well.  The other was a pain and had expensive bladder uretha issues that the Vet said was from not neutering him.  Like $3,000 bill.  SO no brainer to me.

The wife read a thing from AKC that said to feed puppy food until they are a year old.  If you neuter that pup at around 6 months or so then switch to adult maintenance food.  They no longer need the high protein of the puppy food after neutering.

I haven't taken Cooper for a ride yet Glenn.  It will be an issue since Buddy and I take the ol Ford to town so the puppy may cramp his style.  Have to try it though.  We did cut his toe nails on Sun.  Piece of cake.  Carla played with him and I cut them with a people fingernail clipper.  He didn't even know I did it.  LOL

We have a small kid kennel type thing.  It is plastic and flexible.  His kennel fits in it with 2' of extra room around it.  So he can lay outside the kennel if he wants.  About once a week he will slip and pee in the house.  Maybe we miss the signals??  He has never gone in his kennel area even overnight.

Yes he does Glenn.  He is getting better and the biting thing is improving too.  They like everything in their mouth.  He gets all wound up right before he takes his naps.  First thing in the morning he is nuts but then settles down.  Same thing at night.  I have wondered if the two do the same things.  Cooper is starting to mellow some.  ???  LOL   That is pretty good that he brings you your paper Glenn.  We are working on that too.. Great pup.
