New Mexico St. lost to Nevada in their first game & they're a huge underdog in this one. Speaking of dogs, not sure if they still have one, but New Mexico St. has had a kicking tee retrieving Border Collie for several years. Don't think they bring the dog on the road, but a lot of the time, they've been the highlight of the game when they play at home.

Led by Glenn there seems to be a lot of Gopher / Fleck fans in here.

Home game, game #1.............how many points they put up tonight?

1) 10 or more
2) 20 or more
3) 30 or more
4) over 40

If seriously feel there is as good a chance of them putting up 17 as there is of putting up 40.

Not a rah rah fan either but if PJ has success with it, who am I to argue? He needs to beat IA, Ohio St. & the dipsquit at IL tho before I'm sold. With the little blue guy on this one with #3.

I think the Gophers pay NM $250,000 to play with them.  Even though I am a Gophers fan I would like to see NM kick their azz or at least cover the spread.

I just wanted to see the Border Collie 😔

Spread was 36.5 Barry so ya, let's hope NMS covers... :rotflmao:

PJ did not run up the score.  There was no scoring in the 4th quarter.

PJ did cover the spread, but I missed my guess by 3 points.

Gophs took care of business... 38-Zip.

i read on IDO they shook hands before the game???????? heard there is some kind of riff between Kill and Fleck???????

but man Kill looks pretty rough!!!!!!! :doah:
Title: Re: Gopher football
Post by: Dotch on September 09/02/22, 10:11:13 AM
I really thought NMS would at least score once and they came close. My guess before the game was 37-17 Gophers. Think the issue between Kill & Fleck involves the players Fleck had at first were still Kill's recruits  & that some of the players sexual assault stuff going on was pinned on him. I hope Kill turns the New Mexico State program around. It's been awful for a long time. As I said, the tee retrieving dog has often been the highlight of their games.
Title: Re: Gopher football
Post by: KEN W on September 09/02/22, 11:12:10 AM
From what I saw.....Kill didn't like the way Minnesota treated Tracy Claeys.  Kill coached the Gophers for four-plus seasons but stepped down after seven games in 2015 due to complications from epilepsy.

Kill tabbed his defensive coordinator, Tracy Claeys, as his successor, but Claeys was fired after one full season and replaced by Fleck
Title: Re: Gopher football
Post by: Steve-o on September 09/02/22, 11:34:37 AM
Kill and Claeys had the program going in a good direction.

When epilepsy forced Jerry to quit coaching, he envisioned for himself an Executive Head Coach position where he ran the program, make the decisions, but didn't have to coach every Saturday.  That didn't fly with the athletic department and Jerry was out.

But they did give Claeys a shot, who I think was also doing a pretty good job.  But didn't they also get a new Athletic Director right after that?  And Claeys was "not his guy."

But I think the thing that really frosted Kill's cake is when PJ said he needed to "rebuild" the team and "change the culture."  PJ could have said it differntly, but chose not to.
Title: Re: Gopher football
Post by: Dotch on September 09/02/22, 12:07:55 PM
A little insight into what I wrote: "Think the issue between Kill & Fleck involves the players Fleck had at first were still Kill's recruits & that some of the players sexual assault stuff going on was pinned on him."

Hence, Fleck's comments about rebuilding the culture were a bur under Kill's saddle. Claeys got a raw deal and skewered himself when he stood up for his players & vice versa against the Morrill Hall gang. Wasn't Mark Coyle's guy as you said and the heat from the administration, commies that they (still) are, left him no choice. Liked Claeys but there was no way they would've been much better than a .500 team, given the recruiting & transfer policies at the time. Now? Who knows what might've happened.

We had a D1 connection locally privy to a lot of the goings on at the U in those days. Some pretty bizarre stuff went on, including one of the Gopher football players stealing her bike! Kill chewed the players @$$es and she got her bike back. :doah: We won't delve into my sordid past where my pal, the Boy Entomologist & I both got free visits to the U of M shrink, Dr. Schnoxell. Good times.

Gophers stink today. Turnovers(sure dropped TD with interception), penalties, missed chip shot field goal, and a bone headed call by Fleck to go for it on 4th and 2 on their own 28.

How much was Ibrihim missed????
Title: Re: Gopher football
Post by: Dotch on October 10/01/22, 10:01:45 PM
So much for being ranked. They found a way to $hit the bed again. Just about the time you think this team keeps on rolling after making a statement, it's Bowling Green all over. The B1G west is shaping up such that MN may be 3rd or 4th if Purdue's QB stays healthy. He didn't play against FAU last week and Purdue was lucky to survive at home in that one, with FAU getting called for a penalty after scoring what appeared to be a game winning touchdown. Didn't watch the game against MN but caught parts of it on radio. PJ can't make them catch passes or kick field goals but he has to coach smarter in these potential letdown games. Had a bad feeling about this one. Their wins had come too easily and when Mo was held out, well, there's your sign.

Title: Re: Gopher football
Post by: dutchboy on October 10/29/22, 08:55:41 PM
The Big 10 isn't about athletics, competition or academics. It's purely about the money. With USC & UCLA coming next year it will be a conference of the haves against the never wills. The Gophers are on the never will side of the ledger.

It's ok to support your school, be a super fan. But face the reality that they aren't competing for anything except third rate bowl games.

BTW, I enjoy some Gopher sports but understand in the main sports they aren't winning anything.

I think PJ found out that Morgan wasn't going to make a difference throwing the ball because there was nobody that could catch it without Aultman-Bell in the line-up. I think that's why he switched to the kid to get him some game experience. I might be wrong but that would be my guess. I don't think the kid is much better than Morgan.

Gophers win the AXE for the second year in a row. Now comes a forgettable bowl game. They needed to beat Iowa last week and they would be playing Michigan for the Title.

 It looked like a different guy playing QB this week to me. He threw for over 300 yds today & didn't even have 90 yds last week. The last 1/2 of the 4th qtr was pretty crazy, even thought Bucky was gonna tie it up until the penalties started. Still a nice win for the Gophers.

Hey these are big kids. Maybe a few notches above that.  They did a great job and beat a real good team.  How much fun is that?  I  didn't agree with some stuff that they did but it worked out just great!!  It was a fun game to watch from my seat.

The Gophers will find out Sunday where they're headed for their bowl game, but if the expert predictions are solid then there's a good chance they'll be headed to New York for the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

Bowl projection for Minnesota: Pinstripe Bowl vs. Syracuse on Dec. 29

That'll get the recruits banging on PJ's door.    :rotflmao:

PJ is getting close...

But there are a lot of other good Gopher head coaches before him who got close too.

I don't think it necessarily has ever been the coach's fault.

The elephant in the room is that Mpls, MN is is a Vikings town.  Why would an 18-year-old "Blue Chip" recruit want to come to MN to play on frozen tundra where Gopher football is only the 5th or 6th most popular sport in town when they could be a B.M.O.C. for a "Big Time" program in the Sun Belt, where the boosters can now "legally" get them big money deals signing autographs at car dealerships on their off days?      :doah:

We will disagree that PJ is close. He was very good with Kills & Claeys players. But I believe he has been a average coach in a terrible West division. Had he been in the East he would be looking for a job. I will say he has cleaned up the program and the players like to play for him, thats always a plus. The argument that top players don't come to Mpls because they wouldn't be the top dog in town is pretty funny. Almost as funny as Sid always saying the requirements to get admitted were to tough.

Mpls / St. Paul is the BIGGEST Big 10 market in the Big 10 behind Northwestern & Chicago, maybe you could add Rutgers the New York area. (Soon you can add LA to the list). The bright lights and opportunities other than getting to the NFL are here.

For the record I'm OK with Pj, I'm OK with the U. PJ is the best they can hope for and his results are the best they can hope for year in and year out. He will always have them compete, most games they will play hard. And as I mentioned he keeps them off the police blotter or at least out of the newspapers.

But lets not make him or the program out to be more then they are or have been since 1960.

I think the playing outside in the cold is a turn off for a lot of players.

I think the playing outside in the cold is a turn off for a lot of players.

I could buy that argument if they hadn't played in a dome for 20+ years.

Wait till UCLA and USC join the Big ten. They will realign the 2 half's. Unless they just figure out schedules for all 16 teams. Gophers won't be in the weak sister anymore. We can look at playing Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, UCLA and USC more. And still keep Iowa and Wisconsin. Going to get a lot tougher.

I think more West coast teams are coming along with Notre Dame.

Big Ten really wants Notre Dame. It would give them the New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles TV markets. Northwestern is in Chicago but not a Notre Dame. I think they would take one of the Oregon schools.

Should have let Morgan start his last career game anyway. It's a meaningless bowl game that nobody but the players will remember.

Mentality in a Bowl Game is always to play to win with the best players on the field. In this case it is Kaliackmanis. Otherwise I would guess they have a bunch of other seniors, not just Morgan.

The Big Ten Conference has revealed the schedules for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, the first to feature the newly added University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC).

The 2024 season will mark the first time the Big Ten will feature 16 teams and no divisional format, with the conference revealing on Thursday the launch of its "Flex Protect Plus" scheduling model, which will see each college "play nine intraconference games per season," and "every other conference opponent at least twice – once home and once away – in a four-year period."

Gophers will still play Wisconsin and Iowa every year. Will play at UCLA in 2024 and SO Cal at home in 2025.

Ol smoke & mirrors better find a legit team that wants him soon. His record will only go down from here. Big Money left the 4 cupcake games intact it looks like.
