I have the two 3' x 7' garden boxes. Wish I would have made them raised like HD said when I made them. Could still do it. Well I planted one box full of 3 kinds of lettuce that I mixed all of the seeds up and planted them. Once it got going the two of us couldn't eat it fast enough. Even had green smooties in the morning and they were great! This year I think I will do a half a box so a 3' x 3 1/2' area. It is one thick growth of lettuce. I go cut what I want with a scissors. Worked great and I am not much of a gardener. Most fun thing cuz I like salads. Afraid to buy lettuce in the stores...

The Walmart-ization of FF continues. It used to be like an old shoe. You knew where stuff was, there was some logic to it and they didn't mess with it, much. And arrangement was consistent from store to store. Now as has been mentioned it's wholesale movement of categories to other parts of the store. Sometimes it's seasonal related which I get and other times it appears to be just for the fun of it. Now, I will say at the Owatonna store they haven't messed with the grilling/smoking stuff & the batteries are still where they always were. Otherwise it's become like going on a scavenger hunt to shop there. :confused:

I got really bored this afternoon so I took me a trip to fleet farm. meandered around the store to try and get acquainted with it since they moved everything around. :pouty: :pouty:
bought all my garden seeds. ended up getting a $5.00 gift card for spending 2o bucks on garden seeds!!!!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:

Had BLT's yesterday. Kind of bland. I have heard people talk about how much better fresh tomatoes taste and mentioned it to the wife. We couldn't hardly taste the tomatoes on the BLT's. Can't wait till the season now too.

Store bought 'maters are gross. Ripened by pumping 'em with nitrogen. Can't develop any flavor that way. Gotta find someone that grows em year round in a hothouse.
I see Walfart has all their seeds and seed starting kits out already, and the indoor greenhouse was being filled with plants.....nice to see.
I'm tempted to grow my Early Girls in the 5 gal pails on the deck again......

I need to decide what kind of mater to even get. I just buy what is sitting there. Last year they got so big and had all of those wrinkles so were hard to eat.

i usually get 1 super sweet 100 plant its a great cherry tomato. for other maters i get early girl, better boy and big beef. i've had good luck with these types. there nice sized, and seem to me are a decent "meaty" tomato. i didnt can much last year so i will probably get/plant somewhere around 24 mater plants.
i need to make salsa, stewed maters and soup starter mix.

I've grown Early Girls, Better Boys, Beefeaters, and some heirloom type. But the Early Girls are my favorite for taste, and just the right size for slicing, IMO. They're about tennis ball size.

We usually have 6-8 plants up at the lake but we don't grow any down here as we're never around. Have had pretty good luck with the ones grown up there by Dotch in Owatonna, Bushel Boy. They're usually in the grocery stores here & in Austin when the seasons right. Taste a lot more like homegrown IMO than the others that are shipped from who knows where.

i eat a pile of tomatoes. i find that romas arent near as flavorful as the other tomatoes. but your right HD, gawd that hurt, :rotflmao: :rotflmao: they are a meaty tomato. there also great for making the fresh salsa!!!! their also smaller in size!!!!

Those are used mostly for sauces, I think....but they do hold together well when chunked up. Just not a lot of flavor. I've used them for BLT's, and like chunkin' 'em up for tacos and burritos.

So just west of Wadena there is this nice house out in the country in a little neighborhood and they have the coolest raised gardens. It is like culverts. Nice and shiny new ones cut off at maybe 36" high. Probably 36" or 48" diameter. They must have about 5 or 6 of them from what I remember. Made a great looking garden. Can weed whip around them easily too. I am going to the County Hwy Dept. to see if they have any old ones. They do give them away because they won't use a used culvert. Some they replace aren't in terrible shape and may have some good sections to cut out. It's gonna be rusty in spots but I would just buy a can of galvanized paint and clean it up. Cut them off with my torch.

I may be onto something. At Menards corrugated metal panels that are 26" high and 12' long. So make it a circle and it would have a diameter of 45" maybe a little less for the overlap to bolt the ends together. SKU 1558104

Went out and cleaned up after the wind Rai. And snow yesterday. Tended to the bird feeders. Wondering around the yard I noticed the rubarb started popping out of the ground. Some of the winter onions that I planted also showed up.

Was hoping the rhubarb would motor along a little faster but seldom do we have rhubarb ready for pie and sauce from our patch on Easter. Under the snow again which with lows in the mid-teens coming up is probably a good place for it. Had bought some Schwan's vanilla ice cream the other day just in case. Just hafta suffer thru another strawberry pie if I have to I guess. :pouty:

Have Lettuce, Radish, peas, garlic, potatoes, a few green beans, beets and a little dill in the ground as of today.
Will wait a few weeks for the rest of it.
Also planted 4 acres of corn and some beets in the food plot today. And a few rows of sweet corn. Will plant the soybeans and rest of sweet corn at a later date.

The general tilled my garden Saturday when I was up north. I'll get early, cool stuff in the ground depending on rain and weather.

Tomorrow after my blood donation I plan on stopping and getting my mater's, peppers, cabbage and celery plants at fleet farm. Was out checking last year's lists and notes to get a final count of what I need.
Last year I didn't plant anything till May 10th. So my plan is 20 tomato plants, 4 cabbage, 16 green peppers, 8 jalepenos, and haven't decided yet on celery, either 4 or 8. :scratch: :scratch:

The stuff I ate prior to seeing the dog nail it was extemely strong celery flavored. Our garden was in the area where the old hog house sat too. :scratch:

I use it strictly for cooking. Add to chili. I put it in my world famous salsa :rotflmao: and when I make my world famous soup mix/ soup starter. Only time I eat it is when I clean it and the small little shoots smack dab in the middle. :happy1:

One thing with the home grown celery is you can let it get woody. I cut, clean and freeze it sometime around July 1. I keep an eye on it pretty close. I can usually get another small batch and the end of the year.

One thing I learned about celery is to put coffee cans over each plant to keep them growing upright. Otherwise they sprawled on the ground.

Made the drive to Lou's Greenhouse in Bigstone SD today! Got most of my plants. A few more fruit trees to add to my spread.
I was talking with one of the guys and they had to limit spud sales because people were coming in and buying 100lbs at a time. 5lbs will easy yield 50lbs if ya take care of them!!! People are :crazy:
They were out of onion sets as well. My Walla Walla and Big Daddy's will have to wait till the weekend. More expected in later today, so I paid for mine and a buddy is gonna get them later this week when they go.
Gonna wait a awhile to plant...to early for the maters and peppers for sure.

Don't live in NoDak anymore. As we have reached our 70's we decided to live close to one of our kids. So we moved across the river to Hawley, where one of our daughters lives.She has a home there and we have our usual big garden there.
Been a long winter Glad to get out of the house for some garden work. We don't go south for the winter. My wife refuses to leave the grandkids for long. Did go on a cruise in Jan. for a week. we have been on 6 cruises. None booked for next year. We won't go on a ship if there is no vaccine available.

planted some dill, a row of onions, 2 rows of radishes and some lettuce and spinach yesterday before I got tuckered out. the dirt was perfect to work with. hoping to get the rest of the cool weather stuff planted by tomorrow, weather dependent!!!!

The ground in the fields, especially last year's bean ground, has worked up just beautifully. If time allows, I'd like to move some fence and break up a piece of the pasture, again. We raised Indian corn and pumpkins in that area many moons ago. Friend has a rear mounted tiller on a small tractor he's offered me. After several crappy springs in a row, this might be the chance I've been looking for. :scratch:

Anyone look at their apple trees lately? I hadn't paid much attention until noticing they're leafing out quickly. Got a close look last nite and man are they loaded with flower buds! And not just some of the trees, all of them. The pear trees also have more flower buds than we've seen before. Just hope it doesn't freeze at this point.

And not just some of the trees, all of them. The pear trees also have more flower buds than we've seen before. Just hope it doesn't freeze at this point.

Got my kalarabi planted today before the fail force wind. Planted my celery and cabbage. Put in my jalepono peppers. Wax going to finish putting all my mater's and green peppers In tomorrow but seen some 33 low temps next week. That put a stop to that. :pouty: sucks keeping them watered in them little plastic thingys they come in.

Brother put his tomato plants in up here on Friday, he's got some red plastic jackets that he puts water in to keep 'em from gettin hit by the cold. Had 'em for 2-3 seasons now & they work great.

I got an email from one of my Canadian friends on Friday. Moved out to their summer cabin. Said the ice was still on the lake then but he wasn't brave enough to walk out on it. It is amazing what they can raise in their garden there considering the latitude. As long as the bears, deer and moose don't get it first... :rotflmao:

I agree Ken. This morning felt anything but spring-like and we're supposed to get a taste of that snow tonite. It snowed on Memorial Day here back in '92, enough to make the ground white. Was weird seeing rows of green corn and everything else was white. It froze on Father's Day that same year for an encore. Don't need that kind of nonsense again. :confused:

Warmer is OK too except there's more opportunity for volatile off target movement. Round Up tends to be more forgiving depending on what you're going after with it. We've sprayed many fields for annual grasses when it's cold and it's worked fine. Tougher to kill broadleaves and some perennial grasses it may be better to wait until it's warmer. And some broadleaves like giant ragweed & most waterhemp have developed resistance.

i only use the roundup in the landscaping rock/ crushed granite around my house. after a while it gets old pulling weeds and when you dont get the roots they come back. works good on kwack grass too!!! I take a full bottle and dip the grass leaves id the bottle works pretty good.

No problem. Something else I just noticed in the yard here, some but not all of the dandelions took a whackin' from the frost. Their leaves are watersoaked almost like they've been sprayed with a cell membrane disruptor. Noticed a few yesterday morning like that & there were more this a.m. The dandelions aren't dead but they're not going to take up chemical very well either until they have some actively growing leaves. Weird frost. Nailed some of the dandelions but not a lot of visible frost on the grass. The dewpoint in the teens to low 20's might've had something to do with that. :scratch:

I sprayed 4 acres of former crp that was burned off and greened back up. And the infield at our ball diamond, both with round up. About a week ago now. It is working but definitely slower with the cooler weather.

well, looks like 1 more night of covering the plants then temps improve. there saying pretty good chance of rain wed, so plan is to get the rest of my plants in tuesday nite. then whenever i can all i have left are green beans, cukes and carrot seeds to get in the ground!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:

Got 18 green pepper plants and 23 mater plants in the ground tonight. Even cleaned some winter onions. :happy1: :happy1:
Green beans cukes and carrots left to plant. Spinach, lettuce, onions, kalarabi and radishes are peeking out of the ground. Only thing that isn't yet is my dill.

when the maters are ripe, its nothing for me to eat 5-6 a day easy. i make salsa, stewed tomatoes, tomato juice and my own soup mix, or starter. to make the salsa and soup starter it easily takes a box of tomatoes the size of a box peaches and pears come in.........about a bushel. if i have extra i wash them and run them threw a food chopper, pour in a cake pan, freeze, then bust them up in smaller pieces to add in chili spagetti and hot dishes.

Not sure how many mater plants but thinking on trying homemade pasta sauce and of course for blts and salsa. A good variety of peppers and definitely zucchini. Probably start shopping tomorrow. This is the first year of no raised bed, I imagine I'll get sick of weeding after a while.

I eat a lot of tomatoes. Usually from mid July till freeze up. Making salsa.juice,spaghetti. pizza, sauce. I plant a few early reds and yellows, paste and a 8-10 heirlooms including
Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Amana Orange, Winsall, Kellogg's Breakfast, Gold Medal,
Carbon, and Prudens Pink.

As much as I hate to admit it....I plant like Glenn ;) 27 maters and 30 different peppers. 200 plus onions. We do eat maters daily when fresh.
Diced, juiced, salsa, and spaghetti sauce all get canned. We generally put up 60 pints of diced, 30 quarts of juice, 50 plus pints of salsa and whatever is left goes to spaghetti sauce..the sauce actually takes a ton because you reduce it so much..freeze a lot of peppers. Still eating onions from last year, about a month to go before they run out..

Thanks for the reminder on the canna bulbs. I gotta get 'em out of the crawl space and the attic yet. My usual source for 4 o'clock seed is either sold out or didn't stock them this year. Good thing I saved a bunch of seed last fall looks like. Wife is talking about petunias for some of the pots & planters so the hummingbirds won't go hungry.

Here is my salsa recipe. I also put it on the recipe forum......my kids and grand kids love this....
Hotsy Totsy Salsa
4 cups tomato puree or diced tomatoes
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced peppers
3 TBS white Vinegar
1 TBS minced garlic
2 tsp dried parsley
2 tsp Cumin
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp dried oregano
If you eat this raw it is fine the way it is. If you cook and can it then you need to start with more tomatoes and cook them down to the thickness you want. Then measure out the 4 cups after cooking.
I put in the measurements for the onions and peppers. But after measuring out the tomatoes, I just keep adding till it looks to be the right amount w/o measuring.

Here is my salsa recipe. I also put it on the recipe forum......my kids and grand kids love this....
Hotsy Totsy Salsa
4 cups tomato puree or diced tomatoes
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced peppers
3 TBS white Vinegar
1 TBS minced garlic
2 tsp dried parsley
2 tsp Cumin
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp dried oregano
If you eat this raw it is fine the way it is. If you cook and can it then you need to start with more tomatoes and cook them down to the thickness you want. Then measure out the 4 cups after cooking.
I put in the measurements for the onions and peppers. But after measuring out the tomatoes, I just keep adding till it looks to be the right amount w/o measuring.

So what do you mean about using more tomatoes to can it? To boil off the water and end up with more actual tomato so it is not so runny? SO 6 cups of tomatos? Another question. So you use green tomatoes and make this salsa out of them? That sounds great. Thanks Ken this sounds great.

Yes......Actually I use a tomato machine to run them through which removes the skins and seeds. It's called a Squeezo.....works slick when you have lots of tomatoes. I then boil the tomato sauce till it's the thickness I want. Measure out the 4 cups or more for larger batches. What ever is left I can as tomato sauce.

Yeah.....that's not the one I have. Just an example. The one I have is plastic except for the sieves the sauce goes through which are metal. I wouldn't pay over $200 for one.

Made the wife some raised garden boxes on the hill side. Hope it reduces the amount of weeds we’ll need to fight this year. I made them so we can wrap netting or chicken wire around them to keep the wild bunnies from nibbling.

When I use this recipe for fresh salsa it is chunky. Just chop everything up, add spices, put in the fridge to let flavors meld and eat it. If I can it, it is with tomato puree and chunky onions and peppers. I would think canning with chunky tomatoes would be fine.

I have also used this recipe for green tomato salsa. It's good also and makes a smaller batch to eat faster. My grand daughter likes making this one in the fall with green tomatoes. Again onions and peppers as much as you want. Add hot sauce or Jalapeno's

Sure did, used a hoe. Being the first year the grass just keeps popping up. Kinda bugs me tho, some tops of the trees are blocking the sun so hope this all works out..

Man our lettuce is 1/2" tall and the radishes are mayhaps 2" tall. You must plant one heck of a lot of radishes to get that many Glenn.

think there the cherry Belle. I'd have to look. I gave up on white radishes. Never had any luck with them. Pick from whatever fleet farm has.

Have to plant earlier than that..... They take about 10 days to come up and more than twice as long to grow than regular radishes. At least 60-70 days to get to size. I usually plant them the last week of July/first week of August. Pull mid October

KenW, I plant the cherry Belle and the cherry giant. Those are what I get best results from after trying all different kinds.

Enjoy fall radishes here too Ken when time has allowed it. The cherry belles, white and scarlet globes have worked well in the fall. Seems like they get bigger and sweeter than they do spring planted here. I've liked the daikon radishes too but my favorites are the red meat or watermelon radishes. Some years they get up to softball size. We slice them like kohlrabi. Cream colored on the outside and red on the inside, they add nice color to a relish tray. The texture & taste is like a kohrabi until the radish bite kicks in. They keep most of the winter. Hoping to borrow a friend's tractor and rear mounted tiller to work up a new garden area after spraying season is over. Winter radishes may be one of the first things to go in it if I can find the seed. The other thing I want to do again is fall snap peas. It doesn't always work but when it does it's totally worth it. :happy1:

I planted some radishes a while back. After I planted them I remembered I had put down a good covering of Preen so I figured they wouldn't germinate. Wrong, popped up fast and are growing great. Go figure. Yesterday I finally got around to planting the last of the cukes and pumpkins that were start in pots. Also gave about half of one garden a bit of a weeding until I got overheated and quit. :rotflmao:

Yes radishes seem to grow best in the fall. The trick is to get them eating size before the ground freezes. I also like China Rose.
I just started eating my spring radishes today.
I have tried fall peas. Not successful. They always got moldy. Gave up.
I am also a test gardener for the NDSU Extension Service. this year I am testing.....
Pumpkins,Carrots, Yellow Beets, Sweet Corn, and Cantaloupe.

If you go through and read all the comments on how each variety performed.....It pretty much covers most varieties that can be planted here in our climate. I use it as a reference all the time. I also recommend varieties I would like to trial.
They do not trial veggies that have to be started inside like tomatoes and peppers.

I think I planted enough this year. 200 Walla Walla, 200 Big Daddy, 100 red. Plus the ones we plant for just for green table onions. I plant them through out the summer all summer long.

So I read to plant 2 radish seeds in each hole. Well they all grew. Is that ok? Do I need to pluck the ones that are touching?

I thin mine to a couple inches apart. Then when I start eating them I pull every other one. In my experience when they are touching you end up with nothing but tops out of both radishes

Damn.....I couldn't possibly eat 500 onions. I usually plant 1 bundle. That's about 75. Always sweet onions.....Candy. I never plant sets. WAY TO HOT to eat raw. Wife complains I'm walking around the house with onion breath. :thumbs: :thumbs:
My philosophy for onions is....If they make you cry when peeling them.....they are to hot to eat raw.
Up here we plant long day onions. Onions start to bulb up according to daylight hours.Longest days are early July. At that time the larger the top, the larger the bulb.
Sooooo the earlier you plant them, the larger the top will be at bulbing time.
It's almost impossible to plant onions to early. They will grow in snow. In fact onions are actually perennials. They grow bulbs the first year and seed pods on top the second year. that's why if you grow sets.....you want the smallest ones you can find.
If they are to big they will think it is their second year and grow seed pods on top. If they do' they are poor keepers.

Ken we use onions while making our salsa and tomato sauce. So that burns up a lot of the smaller ones. The Walla Walla are large and sweet. The reds never get that big here but are sweet too. The Big Daddy is a new variety for me, but they are supposed to be long keeping onions. Gonna find out!!
The rest we dry out for a few weeks then store in paper bags in the garage fridge and normally have enough to last the whole year. I share a few with friends and family. My 12 year old daughter and I have already had 50 plus little green onions at the table. Like I said I plant these every few weeks all summer long..we love them!
All I ever plant are sets. Works best for me, rather than seed..

The guy whose tiller I'm borrowing was in this a.m. wondering when I wanted to work the new garden area up. Wouldn't take him long to hook it up he said. I told him get all your spraying done 1st then we'll worry about it. Great to have friends like that.
The snap peas farther south like we are seem to work best if we snag rain in late July-early August. It also helps to have a warmer September into early October. When I've been disappointed they've laid in dry soil too long or planting has been delayed well into August because it's too wet. Then it's been followed by a crummy, wet, cold, cloudy September. The salad greens are another fall favorite. I think LPS has been doing that. Hopefully he'll chime in.

I planted my lettuce seeds the week before Mem. weekend. They are about an inch or two tall now. Turned out great last year. I just mix 2 or 3 varieties together in a pouch and spread it all in the garden. I just cut them off with scissors into a colander so I can take out brown leaves and rinse in the sink and ready for a salad. I look across the river at Canada so you know my lattitude. Now I have to get this radish program going.

Or bigger Ken. My Dad grows a variety that get near the size of small cabbage. But to me that's what Kohlrabi tastes like. Mild Cabbage taste with the texture/crunch of a radish.
We froze some asparagus today. Or my wife did anyway. ;) Not like fresh, but very good come January!

Pulled the last of our radishes yesterday. Was a nice crop & shared a bunch with others. Radishes were extra crispy this year for some reason. Planting tomatoes, beans, cukes & some 4 o'clocks & cannas for the hummingbirds tonite. Good thing I saved the 4 o'clock seed from last year's planting. None to be had at the local grocery store display where I've been buying them for years. Kept the red one's separate from the mixed colors except I don't remember which bunch is which. Guess we'll find out... :scratch:

last year I used the Milorganite and really liked it, even for my lawn. I was told golf courses use it for there greens, but fleet farm aint giving it away this year like last year!!!!
another thing I do with maters...…..once they start bearing...…..about every 4th watering I add a TBLSP of Epsom salt. once the cukes start I add some extra fertilizer now and then too!!!!!!

Well I lied. Mrs. Cheviot had one more spot for a tomato plant. Every place she went was sold out yesterday so she almost pulled the trigger on a zucchini. I went to Albert's Leaf, ordered a new pair of glassses, got some ointment for Ruby's eye then stopped at The A.L. Weed House to see if they had any maters. They had a wide selection of healthy looking maters and some zucchini to boot. Got a 4 pack of romas & zucchinis so now we'll have to find spots for them. Both are nice additions to shish kebobs. :happy1:

The one time I planted romas, I had the worst blight or whatever I ever had. I don't think my garden ever recovered.

Del: They've got resistance to races 1&2 of fusarium, verticillium wilt and tomato mosaic virus. If no preventative fungicide is applied, they get septoria or anthracnose & the weather stays damp, they're apt to be goners in this climate anyway.

I guess I needed to spray my tomatoes. I sprayed apples but not tomatoes. Now I only spray weeds... except I did spray some spruce trees with fungicide for the first time ever this year. They were looking pretty ratty and guy next door told me to use a fungicide on them. So I did. One more treatment right before I go north.

OK, now I really am done planting, hopefully until late July - early August. Put all four Roma's in along with the four pack of zucchini tonite. Beautiful nite to plant with a nice breeze. Good to get them in as the wind let up and the skeeters came out with a vengeance. :angry:

I'm done now also. Except for 2 more batches of corn on the 15th and once more on the 25th. Keeping ahead of the weeds now and pests. Found the first Colorado Potatoes Beetles today.
I have a Juneberry hedge and they are loaded. Have netting over them to keep the birds from getting them all.
Strawberries now have berries on them. Netting over them next week also.
Peas are starting to bloom. Won't be long.

my garden, rubarb/winter onion patch, and horseradish patch is also all weeded finally. now I need to go get some grass clippings for around my cukes and mater plants.

Our 🌽 is tasseled out, 2 ND row of radishes are almost ready. Pickle garden is all flowering. Beets are going great.... And (Rebs Favorite) we are picking green beans, first batch was much bigger

We have lettuce up the gazoo! Pretty easy even for a novice to raise. I am going to cut it all tomorrow. Clean it so just great lettuce packaged. Freeze it in ziplocs. Works great for green smoothies. Had the first one this morning. Banana, yogurt, milk or almond milk, whole handful of lettuce or anything fruit or veggie you like. We put in our Ninja individual portion glasses and turn it to a drink. Pretty easy and darn fun. We freeze the bananas when they get old too. In portion sized ziplocs also. Novices at it also buy great way to eat up stuff. I love them. They don't stick with ya long though. Need a sandwich later.

My peas are done. Strawberries maybe 1 more picking. June berries 1 more picking. Eating yellow squash and zucchini.Melons are softball size. Green beans next week. Blueberries next week. No tomatoes yet. Potatoes finished blooming. Eating broccoli. Yellow Raspberries starting to ripen.

Cherry 'maters from the pot on the patio are luscious! :happy1: Cukes are coming along nicely in the one hill. Something chewed off another one in one of the hills that's been struggling. A bunny had an accident tonite so hopefully that helps. Luckily there are still 7 plants in the hill, 6 of them are green dragon burpless & are growing like mad. The munchers are slower for some reason. :undecided:

I'm envious youse guys have cukes already. Amazing how things jumped overnite after the rain tho. Those green dragon cuke plants about doubled in size. They'll need to as late planted as they are. "Maters also increased in height by ~4". Hoping this rain has primed the pump and we can get the pasture area worked up for next year's garden. Bought some extra radish seed the other day so we should be able to start on it in late July - early August.

Ya, not a lot you can do with zucchini, grilling is good. This zucchini patty recipe is the best way that I have found, very tasty.
Zucchini Patties
"These cheesy zucchini patties are an excellent way to use up that abundance of zucchini from the garden. Serve with a bit of tomato sauce or sour cream dabbed on top."
Ingredients
* 2 cups grated zucchini
* 2 eggs, beaten
* 1/4 cup chopped onion
* 1/2 cup instant potato flakes
* 1/2 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
* 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
* salt to taste
* 2 tablespoons olive oil
Directions

I just obtained a real nice 4' x 6' steel panel with 3" x 3" squares. It is white epoxy coated. Should make a great garden trellis. SO now I am thinking of planting some pole beans this weekend. We love green beans but have never planted them before. Do you think there is time for them to grow up here?

I seeded dill one time. I always leave some go to seed in the fall. Comes up all over the place the next year. Usually more than I need. I usually wind up pulling some of it out.

I always let some go to seed, I collect them save it and replant the next spring. I gave what I had left this spring the this General!!!! so I need to save some more.
I freeze extra dill, ive used it as old as 3 years. doesn't seem to make much of a difference. i'm not canning pickles this year, but will probably do a bushel next year. I still will need some when a pickle my cukes and green beans.

When I was in town late morning got a call from my friend/customer with the rear mounted tiller on his tractor. Wondered if I wanted my new garden area worked up before they put the tiller away. They were moving some stuff around and it wouldn't be out of the way. Sure, I said. Got my business done, picked up my feed, mowed a chunk of pasture & moved the pasture fence so it'll work. Soil tested that area a couple years ago so it should be a good spot. Hopefully he can get it in ahead of the rain. Finners crossed... :cool:
PS - They left about a half hour ago. Worked up a strip about 20' x ~100. We can modify it as we go along but at least it's broken up and we can start making it into our future garden. I need to get another tiller soon. My 20+ year old front tine tiller went bang! earlier this spring... :sad: It had tilled a lot of garden. The tines were worn to a sharp tip. :embarrassed:

I add onions to everything I can of pickle. Just what the recipes I have call out. Just an idea. I put a slice on the bottom of the jar and one in top. And I eat that too. :happy1:

Just found out that our local sweet corn producer has their 1st truck in town this morning sitting down in Ace's lot. :happy1: :cool: Harrington's of Nashua Ia, ~ 10 miles south of us, & they are into it big. I used to bowl with a couple of the boys & then it was at least 15-20 pickups with around 50 dozen or so on 'em goin out everyday with fresh picked stuff. They're so big that they cover 30-40 miles in every direction & even our local Hy Vee & Fareway buy from them. Always great corn, I really like their earliest kind.

any i dea what they are currently charging???????? just curious. 2 weeks ago i guess the grocery store was charging 1.75 an ear. yesterday when i went to the veggie stand to get my watermelon and 2 cantalopes they had a sign sweet corn was 10 bucks a dozen.
i'll wait till later on when all the local corn starts coming and they dont have anywhere to get rid of it!!!!! :happy1: i'm going to need about 5 dozen for what i put up for the winter and what i add to my soup starter/mix i can!!!!!!!!

Brother went & got some this afternoon it was $7/dozen or $8/1.5 dozen, takin $8 worth north with us. :cool: They were just comin to town & gettin set up when he seen 'em around 10 or so.

I usually always stop at those stands, great people and produce. Had a Farmer by the cabin would use tge honor system at his stand, i would throw an extra buck for him, just incase tge others didn't.

the watermelon was a tad more expensive. i paid $8.oo for it but was way bigger then the store ones. they had a gaint from texas that was 12 bucks. th cantelope wher 2 bucks each....cheaper then the sales in the big stores. and they are really tasty.

Hey, LPS. I think it’s a little late for pole beans. They generally take longer to be ready to eat than bush beans. The last time I planted them they were coming along just fine about this time of year up to six feet above the ground. One morning I walked out to the garden and found about three leaves left on sixteen plants. Barring an electric fence or a high fence the deer will get them.

Here is my garden. Mostly tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. One green pepper plant. The little tomato plant closest on the left is a heirloom tomato my family has been growing for years. We call it a Toland tomato after my great uncle. He was a farmer and was known for growing huge vegetables. This plant had a rough start, but is doing good now.

Ken, the Juneberries you have, are they the same thing as a serviceberry? Have some of what are probably Saskatoon serviceberry but they're primarily for the wildlife. They're usually long gone before I get a crack at them. A little seedy although I like the canned Saskatoon berry jam from Canada. Would like to try plums again altho I've been advised to move them away from the wild plum thicket if I do. Too much potential insect and disease pressure from that old thicket I was told when my Mt. Royal plum bit the dust after ~ 5 years. Also curious, what kind of pear trees do you have? Looks like a good pear crop coming here considering our trees were planted less than 10 yrs. ago. Saw a customer's pear trees today that are more recently planted and the one was loaded as well. Even the pollinator had a few on it. :happy1:

I have Loma and Hudar pears. Put then in last year, So they are still small. Both are supposed to be self fertile. Got them from St Lawrence Nursery in New York.
Yes Juneberry, Saskatoon, and Serviceberry are all the same. I have 4 planted 2 years ago....Regent, Honeywood ,and Martin. Also some that were here when we bought the house. Those are the ones that are bearing heavily.
I lived in Bottineau, ND for 30 years.....Picked wild ones there. You have to put netting over them or the birds will get every one of them as soon as they turn red.
If you plant plums.....Toka is the best pollinator. All the fruit trees are young planted the past 3 years. All are semi dwarf except the pears which are standard.

Sadly, after nearly a month of being gone & working on Mom's house, our garden up here is almost a total loss. More weeds than anything else, might get some tomatoes & raspberries, but it looks like the deer got the peas, beans, onions, & lettuce. The new neighbor was even comin over & givin it a drink a few times when he was up while we weren't. :pouty:

Disappointed in my Jalepenos. The plants are healthy and full of blossoms and peppers but they ate something other theln Jalepeno. :angry2: I will have to start from seeds again next year. My arse is chapped.

My jalepenos and green peppers are going bonkers. I already gave enough jalepenos for 2 batches is salsa. And I've given some away. Think I have enough green peppers for my soup mix also.
After I got unpacked and things out away from the cabin I went through the garden. Picked green beans, enough for my soup mix, tomatoes, both peppers. When I'm done taking care of that kalarabi and carrots are getting my attention. :nerd:

Reb is pretty funny but I will go with "no comment". LOL The best bell peppers and jalapenos we have ever raised have been in our earth box on the deck. The grow great in them with potting soil. When we put them in the raised gardens they just don't do well. We have cukes now and the tomatoes are just getting close to being Ken's green tomato salse. We are eating lettuce as fast as we can. Fun as heck..... We are novices..

We have some nice looking peppers, I just wish some of them were the jalepenos I thought I planted. I picked cukes today, the warden is making the first batch of refrigerator pickles. I am going to have to pluck a bunch of apples and pears off the trees before the limbs break.

I've grown quit a few yellow varieties.....Yellow Doll, Yellow Baby. This year I have Yellow Petite and Lemon Krush. My grand kids love the yellow ones. Also have red Golden Crown, Blacktail Mountain, and Mambo. Should have all we can eat next month.

yep. I need to make a batch of soup mix and 2 batches of salsa. Each batch takes a bushel or so of tomatoes. Plus the pile I eat.

Pretty darn good. It was nice to cut up the green tomatoes as they are harder and easy to cut. We did add one of those pouches of spices for salsa. 5 tomatoes was exactly 2 lbs which your recipe called for. I did that in the morning and made 3 qts of refrigerator pickles in the afternoon as we were getting too many cukes in the frig. Fun day!

Well I got my asparagus weeded. :doofus: holy mackerel. 2 hours and 3 loads with a ranger later gotter done. The friends I have the asparagus at, his wife said put a small amount of the real fine softer salt down and that helps control weeds. He said he talked to a Dotch kinda fella, says there's a weed killer out there that doesn't kill asparagus or raspberries but it's like 400 bucks for 2 1/2 gallons. Holy Hannah.
Got home and now done taking care of 4 dozen sweet corn. Some for soup starter I make. Rest for meals. Currently in the frig chilling.
Stopped at Mom's and watered her garden quick. Talked to her, she said the big garden produce family north of town that sells a pile of garden stuff at farmers markets doesn't have a lot of stuff this year and there blaming it on the lack of pollination
I drive past a place on my way to work that sells alot of garden stuff and they put up bee hives last year.

I was told by an old farmer to sprinkle some salt around your asparagus. It will kill the weeds but the asparagus can handle it. I went to the County salt shed and got me a pail of salt sand mixture. Way too much brought, brought almost all of it back. It did kill the weeds for at least a year. Pretty good anyways. This was early in our asparagus career so don't remember what the next year asparagus yield was. I'm thinking it stunted them and now 10 years later the asparagus are fine but so are the weeds. LOL I talked to that old farmers son who is a friend of mine the other day about the salt and asparagus. He said well my dad must have put too much salt on them cuz all of his asparagus died. :rotflmao: :rotflmao: This is an absolute true story. Maybe his Dad just overdid it. ?????

YES........they are the first things you can eat in spring from a garden. by the end of june, first part of july they are donbe. plant them someplace you can keep them permanently, they reseed themselves and wont have to ever replant them if you do it correctly.

I see it in stores. Basically about anything in the garden. Throw it all in a pot. Cook. It, put ion jars seal. Them. I will take beef soup bones or a turkey carcass boil it then add that to it for soups.

its a soup starter/mix. i add that to beef or boiled up poultry carcasses. i add all these ingredients into one of them blue speckled 7 qt canners to cook. i must warn you all my or most of my stuff comes from the garden so its time consuming to do. the canner full makes about 18-19 qts.
4-9 X13 cake pans of skinned and 1/4ered tomatoes.
all these ingredients i use a colander/noodle strainer.1/2 to 3/4 full
corn
carrots
peas...i buy frozen
cabbage.....at least 2 big heads
green beans
celery........i grow my own for cooking with
onions
peppers
garlic..... this i add about a 1 lb i cant believe its not butter type of container.
i let this cook down a bit then add more tomatoes....the more tomatoes..the prettier red it looks.
bring to a boil and continue to let it slow boil 45 minutes or so. throw in jars, lids and rings.......hot bath for 45 minutes!!

I got to harvest my first tomato today. It's a biggie. This is how successful my gardening is this year.
I think I got four 'maters total - and the bugs got at the first one so I couldn't eat it.
I'm done spending good money planting vegetables in my sun-forsaken garden. I should fill it with hosta and be done with it. :surrender:

I made my 3' x 7' garden bed/boxes about 3 years ago. We really like them and we are novice gardeners. In one we put 4 tomato plants in a row on one side and about 20 onions on the other side. So easy to weed and water and take care of. We are going to drop a bag of Miracle Grow potting soil in each one from now on. We put peppers and lettuce in the other one this year. Our cukes we just plant in the ground but may make a box for them too with a fence for them to climb. Pretty basic and easy to take care of. HD has his raised up waist high. That is the best way to go. I keep thinking about that. Just throwing it at you in case it helps.

Planting hostas will make the deer happy. I keep looking for a repellent that will really work. Otherwise they chomp every leaf off and leave nothing but stems.

Our patio was full of pots, 5 gallon buckets of tomatoes and peppers over the years. What a difference going with a in ground garden, no rot on the tomatoes and big difference in yield with everything. I had a waste high raised bed made out of cedar for 5 years or so but the bottom was rotting out so it had to go, not too mention the dogs liked laying under it for shade which made me nervous as all get out. Our beans and cukes climb a trellis and tgat works great.

I always plant beans in a wide row, 3 feet wide. Wide enough to reach the middle from both sides. Scatter the beans in the row. Pull the soil on top from both sides with a hoe. And tamp them down. You get A LOT more veggies and less walking rows.
Also plant onions is a wide row 3 feet wide 5 to 6 inches apart.
Beets and carrots in a wide row. 3 rows 6-8 inches apart. Learned wide row gardening years ago from the National Gardening Association TV shows.

Would be fun to plant beets too. Last year I went to the Sat morn farmers market here and the women were almost fighting over the beets. That made me want some. But they bought them all. So by a wide row you mean a 4' long row versus a 2' long row? My cool as heck trellis is 4" squares. It is steel but it is all white plastic coated. May be a clothing display thing. It is 4' x 3'. I thought I would put the 4' side on the ground so would have 4' of beans. Do I plant one row of them near the trellis?

That's good information! I use that in my raised gardens, and works well!

The row is 3 feet wide and as long as you have seeds for. Just start scattering them in the row until you have all the seeds on the ground. Leave an aisle on each side to walk on.When ready to pick.....kneel down on both sides.
Peas can be planted this way also. But I prefer putting in a 3 ft. high page fence. Anchoring in place with electric fence posts. Planting peas 6-8 inches wide on both sides of the fence. Pull the dirt up on both sides from the walkway to cover then.

Of our 4 cuke plants we have eaten almost all of them. I think 4 weren't very good so we threw them. Last night I picked 4 that were only half the size of the normal ones. The leaves on our plants are all yellow and brittle. They know fall is here.

The cuke plants here have been prolific altho they may slow down with the cooler temps. We've given several grocery bags of cukes away. They like to run and hide a cucumber or two under other the plants. Find those 3' - 4' diameter jobbies every once in a while. Once they get hard seeds in them they're sheep feed. Can buy cukes like that in the grocery store. Ick! The sheep are most appreciative.

No, brine, seasoning and it was hit bath for 5 minutes to seal it. I see a bay leaf and garlic. Not sure of the other seasoning yet. I'm gonna add onions to it.

Picked some apples today, honeycrisp, cortland, and sweet 16. Picked a basket or so that were ripe, most of them will take a bit of time yet. Also picked pears, the ground was littered but picked about two and a half pails of good ones. Once they hit the ground they are toast in a short time. Seems like you need to pick pears before they're quite ripe, I keep them in a cool place for storing and put a few in a paper bag to get ripe. When the get a little soft they are ready to eat. My 3 pear trees are Luscious, Gourmet, and Parker. I don't spray my fruit trees for anything but am tempted to start next year, at my age what could a few chemicals do to me? :confused: :confused:

Bet they'll taste pretty good tho. :happy1: Will pick some of the Honeycrisp apples too. Have never sprayed the fruit trees here either. About the only thing I notice are occasional apple maggots but they're pretty rare. I pick up the ground falls religiously and the sheep gobble them down.

I have never sprayed any of my fruit trees either. Only problem I have seen is some russeting once in a while. Kind of a scabby peel.

I get some of the apple maggots, not so many this year. I noticed the black on the parker pears, this is the first year I had pears on that tree. I'm assuming its some kind of fungus. Another fungus, and the one I might possibly spray for, is cedar scab. For it to thrive you need to have apple trees and cedar trees nearby. I got cedars growing all over heck around here. It puts a scabby surface on my fireside and harolred apple trees and the apples are both unsightly and they don't keep near as well.

made an executive decision last nite. my cukes are getting pulled, think i'll wait till tomorrow so the ground isnt so wet. by next weekend i'm pulling my tomatoes too now that i got a use for any green tomatoes. they just dont seem to want to ripen. :pouty: maybe with this warmer weather coming. :scratch: :scratch:

Cukes and maters here were just hitting full stride before it cooled off. Betting with the warmer weather this next week we ain't seen nothin' yet. Lots of small cukes on the vines yet and tomatoes just starting to blush. Everything has been at a standstill. Did some yield checks yesterday before it rained and the corn hadn't progressed since last week in maturity.

i figured the cool weather slowed things down. my cukes sucked all year so..........its just time to cut my losses with that. i'm kinda waiting till wed when my mom gets back home to gather her green maters and just do one batch. i do have enough of the small maters to make up another 4-5 pints of juice. i just need to get a few more to ripen up a bit more. they juice better when there good and ripe. :happy1: i especially like when i dont have enough left over juice to fill a jar. let it cool down add a little salt and pepper, some lemon juice and down the hatch!!!!!!!

Pears are relative newcomers to the fruit growing landscape here in MN but there are getting to be more, increasing the likelihood we could see stuff like scab showing up. That's sorta what it looks like from the CT release. The variety Bartlett has been around since the 1700's so breeding programs weren't breeding for or aware of some of the diseases. About the only disease mentioned in MN publications is fireblight. If it is scab betting that properly timed fungicide application(s) containing mancozeb would do the trick.

One more thing HD, if you want a positive ID on whatever it is, you might be able to submit it to the Plant Disease Clinic on the U's St. Paul campus. Have submitted lots of dead & diseased plants over the years but never any fruit so you'd probably want to check with them 1st.

Pear harvest went well. Some were way up there so had all I could do to reach them with the picker. Got over a 5 gallon pail full and threw 15 - 20 pears that the birds & squirrels had ruined over the fence to the sheep. That'll learn 'em! :angry:

I stopped spraying my apple trees when I retired and started spending summers up nort. Most of the apples are pretty bad. This year somewhat better for some reason. Maybe because the deer are eating all the windfalls so the bugs don't reproduce.
Have a honeycrisp tree, never got a decent apple off it. Honeygold pretty good this year but need another week or so. Another tree that I forget what it is, zestar maybe, did ok this year.

Did a little looking. Does anyone grow pears up where you're at Barry? There's a variety called Ure that was discovered/developed at the Morden Experiment Station in Manitoba. It needs a pollinator and the Golden Spice variety developed here in MN works. Both are hardy that far north. Trouble is it takes a few years to get them to bear. Was a little surprised that HD has a Bartlett tree that has survived MN winters. That's a zone 5 variety more in line with central IA. That said there are rumored to be some peach trees in Waseca. Sometimes in the right environment you can get away with things. A friend and I tried growing peaches that were reputedly zone 4. We babied them thru 2 winters before they biffed it. :sad:
Del: We used some Haralson's today for apple crisp and the scab is the worst on them it's ever been. Didn't get the leaves raked & ground up last fall, mainly because they stayed on the trees until well after the snow flew. May have to consider the spraying option if it happens again. Our Honeycrisp has been a work in progress. It had a double leader out of the chute that was a pain to straighten out. Once I did it'd bear a few nice apples the birds, squirrels or deer would get then the next year not bear at all! It pulled that stunt several times & pissed me off to the point that I almost cut it down. Pruned the ever living snot out of it last spring in an attempt to cure it or kill it. It pulled its head out of its butt and actually had decent quality and quantity on it. Figured it'd revert back to its old ways again but noooooo! It has beautiful apples & lots of them. Plus it actually developed into a nice looking tree. Go figure. :scratch:
On the bucket list for next year: A Honeygold apple tree & possibly a Luscious pear tree.
And glenn, since you have all this free time on your hands, why don't you go pull up your neighbor's garden to help him out, ya putz! :rotflmao:

Our garden turned out pretty darn good for the novices we are. I think we will plant Roma's next year. This year our tomatoes are so juicy that there is not enough tomato to go with it. lol Actually so juicy they aren't that good in a salad. Almost fall apart.

Dotch, Honeygold is my absolute favorite apple. My trees are mostly getting pretty old, like me. I've still got the honeygold that I planted in fall of 73 growing and producing. Outlived several of the other apples. Also have a couple I don't remember what they are...
Two full sized haralsons that got away from me and are now like 35 feet tall...
Couple zestar! I think the northern spy bit it last year... And the Honeycrisp tree is doing ok, but the apples seem very susceptible to bugs and disease, so this year there are a bunch but they are all lumpy and about the size of walnuts.
Since I am only a couple blocks from an old orchard turned into houses, still having bug issues although this year was better for reasons unknown.
Tried Northstar cherry years ago. Got a few cherries once. Normally it turns out that the robins will eat them pink instead of waiting for red... And netting the three was a pain. The plums succumbed to borers in the same time frame. So Apples it was.

Been a good apple year here. Even the two Honeycrisp trees have some nice apples and they are delicious. Other varieties we have are State Fair, Sweet Sixteen, Cortland, Haralson. Harolred, and Fireside. I should probably get the old cider press out but we still have lots of frozen apple juice. Del, you are inspiring me to plant a Honeygold next spring.

Last time we used it we had neighbors bring apples too. I believe we made over 50 gallons of apple juice and some pear juice also. Its pretty good stuff. A five gallon pail of apples makes a little more than a gallon of juice

Honeygold is also my favorite. Had quite a few last year. None this year. But the tree is growing nicely. Had some Zestars to eat this week. Grand kids loved them. Also had Chestnut Crab this past week. They ate all of them also. Small but love the crab apple flavor that is different than any other apple.
I have 2 pear trees I planted last year from St. Lawrence Nurseries in New York, They are both self fertile. They only sell hardy standard trees. Both are rated for -50. But could take awhile to produce fruit.

Thanks Ken! Looked at the St. Lawrence website & was impressed by the number of apples & pears they had. Still looking to acquire a Patten Greening someday. It was primarily a pie & sauce apple, now an heirloom. Was one by the old granary when I was a kid. Was never sure of its origins but turns out it was an IA release. Old publications like these fascinate me & along with giving me a lot respect for those who did the work of selecting the varieties all those years ago.

Honeygolds do tend to bear every other year unless you are diligent thinning them. I have noticed that. I was never very diligent at thinning stuff.
I had a beacon and when it bit the dust, replaced it with a state fair now that you mention it. I had forgotten that one. I think it passed on a few years ago.
STill have a spartan from Jungs of wisconsin... some sort of macintosh variety I was told.

Many years ago I started planting apple trees on my property. I probably should have but never did keep track of what I planted. The first ones were a lot of crab trees that came in plant bands. Trees were about a foot tall. For the past 5 or 6 years I have been planting bare root apple trees each spring. Probably have about 60 of them now. I think I counted 20 something of the crabs I planted years ago. There also a smattering of apple trees started from seeds from apples we ate in stands. :rotflmao:

Only thing left in my garden are tomatoes and a bumper crop of carrots. And those tomatoes are going to get worked over tomorrow. Make juice out of the small ripe ones, and pickling, canning a bunch of green ones

Except for making some horseradish yet, I'm done canning. Will need to finish putting stuff away, but that's for another day. Thinking Friday while I enjoy a few :toast: and a :campfire:

Wasted some time today picking apples. I have to say the apples on my Cortland tree are particularly impressive this year. Makes the Warden smile when she gets to peel nice large blemish free apples. :sleazy: :sleazy:

Cukes are waning here. Still a few on the vines yet & with the warm weather next week that'll probably be it. Was just nice to have some again after a couple years without.

Everything has really slowed down think I'll pull what's left this weekend. I'll try the garage trick on all the green tomatoes , some big green bells might just get cut open and some scrambled eggs added to it. The smaller jalapenos will get put in tge dehydrator with all the mexi bells and serranos for seasoning. Still several squash tho, the green ones will probably get cut up and froze for soups. Been a good year!

As Dotch can attest, I use to be pretty serious about my tomatoes. The varieties are all heirloom meaning mostly that they're not hybrid. I use to plant them in 6' by 6' grid and they pretty much filled right in. I would put them out early and protect them. A tomato plant will double in size every 21 days.
This year I only had 5 plants and they are barely 6 feet tall.

Picked all the maters that were ripe or blushing last nite as well as a dozen cukes. Where the maters were located it didn't freeze all that hard relative to the rest of the yard. Looks like we can call it a year in the garden tho & focus on finishing up apple picking. The Fireside and Haralson need to be picked along with a few remaining Honeycrisp. The SnowSweet should be getting close to ready. Have to round up some caramel and slice up a few. Got my eyes on a rear tine tiller not too far from here. Might have to go look at it over the weekend. Be nice to spread the new garden area with chit & get it worked in before the snow flies.

picked the green tomatoes off my only plant left last nite and hanked it last nite. will pluck all the flowers today that are toast. my garden is no officially done with.

Well, not everything got toasted last nite. Cukes are & any volunteer gourds got nuked. Somehow one zucchini survived & I picked a nice 8" specimen. A few of the tomatoes got singed on top but had lots of live foliage left. Cannas the same. Their flowers were fine, just some of the leaves scorched in places. 4 o'clocks largely untouched. Still flowering too but definitely close to being done. Interesting to see how cold it gets tonite after they'd predicted 36 last nite. :scratch:

Still lots of foliage left on the maters yet along with green fruit after the 2nd hard frost nite before last. Guessing we'll have a few dozen more to pick before the week is out. Metering out the ones we picked the other nite nicely. Put the greener ones in the bottom of the buckets so between giving them away & eating them ourselves we should have maters to burn for a while yet.

Garden season is over......picked all the tomatoes and dug all the potatoes. Still some fall raspberries yet. about half done tilling. Time for some green tomato salsa.

It's coming here too based on the forecast after mid-week. Still lots of tomatoes to pick yet. The past 3 weekends when we've been working at Mom's, I've brought my brother from IA a dozen or so of varying degrees of ripeness. He's had a steady supply. Their garden never materialized due to the dry weather there & he loves tomatoes. Also gave him a bunch of apples. Still apples to pick yet. The SnowSweets should be about ready. Slice some up and dip them in caramel. :happy1:

Got the remaining Honeycrisp & SnowSweet apples picked last nite. Birds raised hob with way too many Honeycrisp & then the ladybugs got in them. Got a couple dozen SnowSweet so was happy about that. Heading to the grocery store for some caramel. The tree had what appeared to be fireblight in it even tho it's supposed to have above average resistance. Felt fortunate it was limited to a couple limbs so will prune that out and hope for the best next year. Should pull out the ratty ass lilacs to the south of it to improve air flow while I'm at it. Love the tree. It was almost perfectly shaped up until this summer. A few Firesides & Haralsons to pick tonite along with the maters.

Dug and let dry all the cannas and dahlias. Well, I only dug half of the cannas as that's usually more than I will need next year. Boxed them up and put in basement (I have walkout so I was able to move the boxes with a dolly. I dug up three of the 6 or so rhubarb plants (each could easily be split into three parts) because they are in what will be the new septic drain field. Anyone looking for rhubarb is welcome to come and get the remaining 3-4 plants.

I picked a few baskets of apples yesterday also. Fireside, Harolred, and some Sweet 16s that were a little later to ripen. I thought I had removed plenty of apples when they were the size of ping pong balls but I should have removed more. From what I've been reading lately, they should not be closer than 4 to 6 inches from each other. (Social distancing)
I also picked my tomatoes and peppers. I got an egg basket of bell peppers and a real nice bunch of ghosts and serranos which I will start fermenting for pepper sauce.

Those dangerous peppers are beautiful. Way to hot for me. I would like to try a taste of something made out of them though. 1 bite. LOL I like to watch the food shows when they are eating that real hot stuff. Pretty funny how some can handle it great! Looks like they are in serious pain.

Covered the strawberries with straw today. Also laid down my grape vines and covered them with dirt. Supposedly could get a foot of snow by Sunday.

pulled the last of my carrots. dumped leaves in the garden and mulched them up. tomorrow as its snowing i'll dump unmulched leaves on ma's flower bed. then its ni-nite for the winter.

Picked the last of the tomatoes Saturday a.m. Got the remainder of the apples picked last nite and inside. After 24 this morning I'm thinking we're gonna call it. My quest for a tiller has been frustrating. Too much time being spent at Mom's cleaning out stuff. Every time I find one I like that's close enough, it's gone before I get a chance. Eff it. Spread chit on the garden, buy another tractor & disc it in instead! :happy1:

I've only bought different perennial flowers and onion sets threw a catalog. One year had excellent luck with the onions another 2 years not so much. I get my onions from the local hardware store and all my seeds from fleet farm. And that is like in March when I first see them put out.
Now my brother gets his tomato seeds and starts them from seed through Amazon. These are a certain type of tomato, smaller but tasty. He buys these during the winter and taste like they where vine picked that day.

Sooo, pretty new to this garden stuff. I ended up dropping the mower deck while sucking up leaves today and dumped a bunch of cut grass and leaves on the garden. Being pretty late should one let the snow smash it down and till it in the spring, or till it yet this year?

so Ken, i think we.ve had a bit of this discussion but of all those seed catalogs that you get, how many do you actually order from???? i really dont do any "extreme" gardening, usually stick to the basics and that i can get seeds anywhere that sell seeds.
if there would be something i'd like to order it would be that tall prairie grass type stuff. its strictly ornamental, but i really have no place to put it, and i've tried dreaming up of a place in my city lot. i really like the reddish colored grass!!!!

Most years I order from 2 or 3. Just depends on what varieties I want to plant but am out of. I am also looking for new ones to try. Especially ones that are new with All American awards. This past year I ordered from Seeds N Such and Jungs. I also got test varieties from NDSU.
Some things are a bust....won't plant them again. Example is orange beets. Just wanted to try them to see if they are different than the reds. I won't be planting them again. Going back to hybrid red beets. They are crossed sugar beets and are sweeter than the old reds or the orange ones. I let my grand kids make the decision. They all like beets.
I ordered most from Seeds N Such and Pinetree Seeds because the packets are smaller and thus cost less.I would rather buy new fresh seeds every other year rather than planting seeds left over from 3-4 years.
But I like to see the catalogs with new varieties and good information. I probably get around 15 or so. They are all free.
