Title: What are you drinking?
Post by: HD on April 04/19/22, 03:28:00 PM
Since we got a new liquor store in Isanti, the selection has been improved for the area. The isle's are huge and the variety is astounding.

Anyways, I'm a Scotch, Rye drinker.... and this is my latest pick.

What are you drinking?

I just tried this one.  They opened a new distillery in Minneapolis and thought I'd try it.  I hope some day they come up with a recipe of straight Irish Whiskey, but for now they blend the Irish stuff with American Whiskey.  I reckon it takes a few years to get a new recipe dialed in.

It is drinkable, but not so good that I'll go out and get another bottle.  I'll wait til they come out with a straight Irish bottle before I try it again.

Honestly, I can't drink hard booze straight up, on the rocks!!! Used to do a little blackberry brandy, or peppermint or root beer schnapps but man it gave me heartburn!!

Boar got me to try fireball and it's good but I know better!!! :sleazy: :happy1:

Love a good bourbon but Irish is slowly taking over. If I ever see Blanton’s, I’m drinking it!

But, my “everyday” is Jameson Black barrel or Red breast.

Hard to argue with taste. But...in my opinion drinking a good bourbon, rye, or Irish whiskey with anything but ice and a splash of water is blasphemy.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it blasphemy.  There are all sorts of new craft cocktail recipes that compliment quality whiskey.

And what did Jim Beam say when asked what is the proper way to drink your bourbon?  His reply, "Drink it any damn way you please."

I bought some of this to try tonight....it was on the middle shelf with the Johnny Walker, but cheaper... It has the same oak flavor, and very comparable to the Walker. So, if you like Johnny Walker... you'll like this!
Title: Re: What are you drinking?

Use to run with a guy years ago who drank Johnny Walker Black. If I drank enough good stuff before hand at the end of the night I could drink one. Vast amount of Windsor was required first. That Johnny tasted like kerosene.    ;)
Title: Re: What are you drinking?
Post by: HD on April 04/25/22, 06:49:18 PM
I would agree, Johnny does have a bite to it... mostly (to me) the overwhelming burnt oak flavor.

When we were younger my buddies and I got into the scotch thing for awhile.  But I actually wasn't that crazy about it.  It always reminded me of whiskey with soap in it.  LOL

If you are looking for a good Scotch Whiskey, on the cheaper side..... this is pretty good 👍 (but, you need a Costco membership)
Title: Re: What are you drinking?

hey HD I don't think ya need a membership for the booze side...  that I think is open to the public...   just what I heard...  and sounds good too!!!    :happy1:
Title: Re: What are you drinking?
Post by: HD on May 05/17/22, 06:59:51 PM
You might be right Mikey. We have a membership, but never asked if we needed it to shop the liquor side.... they still ask when you shop, but that maybe just for the "rewards" part of the membership?
Title: Re: What are you drinking?
Post by: mike89 on May 05/17/22, 07:03:51 PM
just found this HD;

What states can you buy alcohol at Costco without a membership?
You don't have to be a member to buy alcohol

No problem, in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Texas and Vermont. If you're a resident, you're welcome to purchase wine, beer and spirits from Costco without a club card.

so I think the rewards is it...

Currently drinking Heavens door Tennessee Bourbon. I don't know why but I don't seem to like much that comes out of Tennessee. JD is fine but doesn't hit the palette the same as good old Kentucky Bourbon. Just killed my vintage bottle of early times gifted to me from The General

Whistle pigs...possible the worse whiskey I've ever tasted. Not entirely true, but for the price I paid, yeah, not worth it!

I did try a new one the other day, a Canada whiskey but may be a new favorite...Caribou Crossing!

I remember being in high school in the early 70's, all we heard was how good Coors Beer was. Early 70's they finally started distributing it in Minnesota. It IMO was the most watered down stuff I ever drank. Milwaukee's Best at 4 cases for $10 was better. Never acquired a taste for Bud, Busch, Pabst or Coors. To each their own I guess.

I got to try some "bootleg" Coors before it was distributed outside of CO.  I must have been someplace between 10 and 14 years old and even at that tender age, knew it was watered down swill.  My pa drank Pfeiffer's - which was full bodied, to say the least - so everything I tasted was weak by comparison.

Our kegger parties were either Miller or Pabst.  If I ever had a vote, it went for Pabst.

Bring up Pfeiffer's always reminds me to check...  There is a company in Anaheim, CA who seems to own the brand and had said they want to open a brewery, but it still hasn't happened yet.  They were selling hats and T-Shirts and glasses - so they must got no money.  :bonk:

pfeiffers.......3 cases fer 10 bucks back in the day!!!!!!!! :happy1: :happy1: yea i drank a few.

back in the day........... my uncle who lives in bloomington was a high school math teacher...in the summer he worked at the schmidt brewery...they had the pfeiffers brand. he basiclly said when they ran out of the schmidt bottles, they'd put it in the pfeiffer bottles.

A couple of my buddies in college used to drink Pfeiffers. Their motto was "No two taste the same!" We bought a bunch of Hamm's in twist off glass bottles from Sharret's on University and Raymond. $2.10 a 12 pack and there was like a $.75 return on them. It was like they were paying us to drink it. Drank lots of Schmidt back when it was still Schmidt. They were major contributors to the barley breeding program at the U once upon a time. My fave tho was Special Ex. We'd have our quarterly end of the quarter party in our basement apartment on Brewster St. We'd get 2 16's of Special Ex and finish 'em off with an 8 of Schlitz Bull. Guaranteed to end badly.

We my dad and the next door neighbor used to make a beer run to Mendota Heights for that 3 f'er $10 deal.  In the early 70s they'd fill the trunk of an old Plymouth Fury or Buick LeSabre depending on who drove.  I went along for the sucker.

(I remember when the neighbor's daughter bought a Olds Cutlass that had a trunk much smaller than the Fury - he called it the Buttless Cutlass.  But I digress.)

I remember hearing that story about the Pfeiffer's and Schmidt too.  I don't know though.  Pfeiffer's always had more of a bite than Schmidt, but that mean it didn't never happen.  I always liked the unsubstantiated variant of the story that said Pfeiffer's came from the bottom of the Schmidt vats.  :rotflmao:

There was always one Special Ex guy in every crowd.  When I moved into my house in 93 the neighbor across the street was still a Special Ex guy.  I never cared much for Ex, but don't get me wrong, I still drank his Green Death and lived to tell about it.  :drinking:

The one Special Ex kegger we had was straight out of Animal House. People puking & peeing in front of the apartment. Old ladies banging on the floor above us with their broomsticks to get us to turn the tunes down. One of our married friends left the party with a large breasted woman, not his wife. Smashed his car into a power pole. When he got home he peed on the bedroom floor. His wife never let him come to one of our parties again.

One beer I really liked & bought whenever I found it was Schmidt Extra Special. Only bought the returnable bottles altho I vaguely remember it also in cream colored cans. Last time I saw it was in the late 80's when I got a case in Owatonna. A lot of turmoil & upheaval in the brewing industry since then. Have no idea who owns what anymore.

Fondly. Did many a 6 pack of Big Mouths between Calvin & Rugby ND on my way home Friday nites. Could shave with those bottle tops or at very least slice your finger off. Schmidt Light was popular too back in those days for those of us watching our girlish figures (or not).

Sounds like it was a Tuesday night beer run.
I went to go stock up on beer and noticed yesterday that the price on 4 of the fancy 12 packs I buy went up from $15 to $20? I asked what gives? They said, “well the 6 packs are $12 so this is more in line with that price.” No crap. That is why I bought the 12 pack instead of the 6. They were way cheaper.

This time of year we always had homemade Tom and Jerry's.  I will look for the recipe.  They are good but man they warm you up.  Pretty sweet too so can't drink a lot of them but the first one or two are great. Been a family tradition for many decades.  Mix with a combo of rum, brandy, or even whiskey.  My Grandma and Grandpa started it.

No it is a mixture of eggs, vanilla, sugar, nutmeg etc.  Put some almost boiling water in a cup add a big shot of booze and then a big dollop of this and stir it in.  Will warm you right up.

I just this morning scored a bottle of Blantons, had to purchase $100 worth of stuff to qualify so I grabbed a bottle of piggy back and a Willet Pot Still, so I'm set for a little while. I wish I could have got there earlier I missed out on the Stagg.  :angry2:

I prefer Manhattans.  A family favorite of Dad, Uncles, and brothers.  I use Paul Masson Grand Amber but will use what ever is available.

The Blade and Bow  story kinda reminds me of how Cats Eye distillery in IA finds and buys aged, legacy, surplus "juice" from wholesale distillers, finishes it in their own barrels and sells it in what ever quantities they can get as their Obtainium line of whiskey, bourbon, and rye.

Here is our family Tom and Jerry recipe.  Has been in the family for over 60 years that I know of.  Maybe longer.  It is real sweet and I could only handle 1 of them last night.  We used to have a few and would be checking tip ups at my Uncles cabin at Christmas time without coats on.  Really warms you up.  Put as much of the batter as you like in the glass then add a shot of booze.  Commonly mixtures of rum, brandy, whiskey.  Make a bottle of it and put a knitted cover on it so you know what it is for the Holidays.  I put 2 tablespoons of batter, then the shot of booze and then slowly stir the hot water in.  Not boiling or it will curdle the eggs.
