Some light stuff as we were leaving GR around noon & it was a little more serious as we left DR again, but it was done by the time we got out here ~1.

We have had light rain on and off all afternoon.  No quantities yet but good to see.  Things are really greening up and saw more deer in the fields than I have for a long time today.  :happy1:

roony always gets more up there & not just rain! :sleazy: Storm total .44" at the ranch & .51" in Bugtussle. Supposed to hold off until the early morning hours & rain more tomorrow. Auntie Mar Mar's church has a meatball dinner tomorrow. Could be a nap day. 😴

About 1/2 inch rain the last day or so. No more expected again until tomorrow night.

Anybody ever put up one of those big rain gauges that looks like a 2' long piece of clear 1-1/2" PVC? It's got big red numbers on it. For those of us that are visibly impaired.
I bought one a couple weeks ago. Finally got around to putting it up. Just for giggles, I put 4" of rain water in our old gauge and poured it in to the new gauge. There must be a trick to reading it. The 4" brought the new gauge up to less than 1/2".
What am I doing wrong? Did I waste $15?  I bought it the same day we bought our hunt/fish/trap licenses so maybe I was just in a good mood.
I wonder. Does Darth Vader have a sister named Ella? Bet she has her ups and downs.

those usually have a wide mouth to catch more water, like a bird bath..   so it catches more water to make come out right...   so yes I have had them and they work good...

OK. Why does 4" from the old gauge come out to less than 1/2" in the new, big gauge?

as I said it's because of the wide mouth on the big one, it catches more water to justify the measurement...

Rain gauge size determines the repeatability and also the accuracy of a rain gauge. The larger the opening, the lower the statistical error in measurements in real-world applications. Always choose the largest size that your budget allows.

what Mike said!!!!!! :happy1:

TT think of it this way..........the standard, small glass rain gauge is how wide on top, 1/2 to 3/4 inch and that size all the way down. so it doesnt take as many drops or rain to fill it up, on the other hand when you put a gauge out that is 1 1/2 inches wide.....it takes alot more rain drops to fill if, but is marked or measured to be accurate.

so......... if your taking an object thats say 1/2 inch in diameter full of water and then dumping it into something thats an 1 1/2 in diameter....its not going to be the same!!!!!

Iffn you have a 5 gallon pail outside and it rains an inch the water in there will be an inch deep. Dump it in a rain gauge and I'm thinking it would overflow. Get it?
