I bought this Jiffy Legend Auger I am thinking around the early 90's?? It is a 9" which I love and is just the right size for me. It is a heavy auger and this year as all others started on the second pull. Put new gas in it and ready to go. I love the auger except it gets a little heavier each year. I have never weighed it buy have read they are about 40 lbs. I can feel it in my hernia that I got repaired when I retired. Well I am thinking of getting a new lighter auger. Unfortunately it will be plastic where mine is all metal except the gas tank. I have always considered the propane ones. I use a permanent house and just keep redrilling the holes. So I guess I need a chipper blade. My buddy says go electric but they are $675. That ain't happening. I may even consider a smaller gas model but still with a 9" auger. I will then sell mine. Any thoughts as you are my go to guys at times like this.
-
Let the auger battle begin! :doah: :rotflmao:
-
Yes I know Leech. I have been reading lots of stuff but was hoping for some good info from you guys. Such as does anyone have a propane auger and how do you like it?
-
I can't really help ya.....
I've only had a Lazer and I don't think I'll ever get a different kind.
-
Is that a Strikemaster HD? I will be redrilling holes most of the time. I may even just get a lighter gas auger. I see Eskimo does not make a 9". There out of the picture.
-
I have been real happy with my IonX...
-
ESKIMO!!!! What else IS there? Go with their HC40 propane 8".......or the 33cc gas Stingray. My stingray was unbeatable. LOVED it. Very light; I needed that after 3 spinal surgeries. But, I like the propane, no muss, no fuss ones. Terrific customer service, too...Eva will take care of you in a flash. :happy1:

Love my stingray. 2 friend have the electric strikemasters. 1 is an 8 inch and the other is a 10 inch. When mine finally dies I WILL be getting an electric. It's an investment that will pay for itself.

Isn't the 'ray just a beaut? :azn:
-
I am looking at getting the Ion x 10". I would get the strikemaster, but i will be reopening holes. Electric is worth the investment i think.
-
inagree with rebs, ive the eskimo hc40 in 10" genitics ya know, and it is a dream for perms if u dont like ele tric. its geard lower, and anctualy augers, where the others are whats called crap slingers. throwing ice all over the place.
-
in also have the ion x 10" again, genetics, love it! but i tell ya, when the ice gets 2.5 to 3 ft thick, it wear me out bad, so much ice displacement compare to the 8, so im in the market for an 8"bit
-
Keep in mind Jb, that an ION replacement lithium battery runs anywhere from 130-$190....and the tranny gears are nylon. Just not what I care for, but whatever works for ya. Worked on a LOT of augers over the years.
-
I just ran to Outdoors Again the sporting goods store here. Looks like Jiffy is the only ones that make a 9". He has a Jiffy electric there for about $599. Forgot to see if it has reverse. It is a 9" or I could keep my flighting and use it with the elec powerhead. Jiffy powerhead alone is $499. Then sell my gas powerhead. ?? Maybe I could get by with an 8" since it would be so easy to redrill with electric. I let the holes freeze a little smaller of course cuz it is a pain to redrill them now. Decisions decisions. A replacement battery is $180.
-
That DOES have a reverse, Barry. 8" redrill easier than 9", and wiyth levtric saving on juice is important. An 8"hole is gonna get yer fish out, IMO 1" makes little difference.
-
i would barry, 1 inch amkes a difference in the ice displacement.
-
I hear ya Rebs and Boar. I do catch some big sturgys here so don't want to be unhappy if I get the Granddaddy of them all. I know 8 would probably do but I am so used to 9. It seems the perfect size to me. Now i need to get the weight on it. It does have a 2 year warranty on it.
-

Na.....I wouldn't. If ya fish with Glenn, an 8'" prolly be too BIG. :azn: :rotflmao:
-
:rotflmao: :rotflmao: Poor Glenn... I see the battery is only 1 year warranty.
-
Keep it warm and CHARGED!!!!!
-
Just like Mama then Rebs? LOL It has hardened steel gears. I am pretty excited now. :sleazy:
-
Maybe Mikey will lend ya some Tide pods. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
-
:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :happy1: :happy1: Well I appreciate all of the help and I am pretty sure I am going to see if he can get me the 9" Jiffy E6 Lightning here by Sat. It has a serrated blade that is suppose to last a long time and are good for reopening holes.
-

Yup Barry, it's a Strike Master..... I'm a run and gunn'er. I have a flip over that I use more as a sled than a fish house. I drill a ton of holes in a short period of time, and move around a lot.
With that said, they don't work well for redrilling holes and they don't have a 9 inch.
That's why I really can't help.
If you wanted a lightweight auger to drill a bunch of holes, fast, I would recommend a Lazer.
For the fish house folks, Boar or G would know better.
:sorry:
-
the jiffy lightning is awsome and 17 lbs.with 8 inch bit.
-
Sorry I'm no help fellas, my mid 80's jiffy model 30 still starts on the second pull, runs great and wont die. If you see a guy spinning in circles from this thing it's most likely me!!
-
Makes me feel good to hear you say that. I never really heard of them since I wasn't in the market for one till recently. I'm chomping at the bit now. Gonna put my wheel house on the river Sat. I'm thinking. Eat more potatoes Bobber. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
-
Old model 30's are the indestructible workhouse of the ice fishing age. No mistaking that poppa-puta-putta Tecumseh engine...

Ya they sound great don't they. Especially someone a ways away drilling through thick ice. Kind of the Harley of Ice Augers. The wife just got home. See ya a little later. :sleazy: :sleazy:
-
yessire i still have my modle 30 3hrs whitehead. saved my ass last year for crappies.

I did not know that Rebs about the gears. The only reason I am leaning towards the ion is for reopening holes in the fish house. The strikemaster lazer sucks for reopening holes. I hear you to Boar, the thicker the ice gets the more torque you get out of the 10". Gas or electric. I just like the 10" in the permy because it gives more room for the transducer in the hole. I wish strikemaster made a twin blade that is good at reopening holes.
-
thats cool.
-
The Jiffy I am getting says it has serrated blades that last much longer and are great for re drilling holes. We shall see. $599 here in town.
-
It says it has a usb port on the battery. That would be nice to keep my phone charged whilst in the house listening to tunes and Vikes winning conversations. AND it is 6 amp. Looks like the others are 5 amp I think.
-
No, that's for yer DVD porno player.....................
-
:happy1: Are those pretty cool Rebs??? :rotflmao:

thier awsome!!!! comes with handy wipes...

What's that got to do with plug 'n play porn? :rotflmao:
-
There ain't no USB port on it. I looked... :rotflmao:
-
I am charging it now and there is not one there. You are right Dotch. BUT on the Jiffy site it says "integrated USB charging port". Either it is an older or newer model year than mine.
-
You have it plugged in to charge? I imagines THAT's the USB they are talking about...where the batt/cord plugs in...
-
It says on the Jiffy site it says it has an 'integrated charging port" On one of their sites I just looked at it does say to charge phones etc. I called them but they close at 3 so I left an email to them. Darn. :angry2: It is on the Cabelas site that explains the USB as for charging phones and other small electronic devices.
-
Huh...not mentioned in their video....go to 4:45, starts about there...maybe ad-writer at Cabela's got bungled up a wee bit....that line was supposed to be on a GPS fish unit. :azn:

Hi Rebs. Just got back from the wifes company Christmas Party. I used to work there too so it is all my friends too. Was a hoot. I told her I had to check in to see if my friend Rebs found out anything as he is a curious guy too. :happy1: Look at the writing about it not the video. And every thing on the other sites say USB too. As in to charge phones and run small things. Hhmmm...
-
We must pursue this.......and all the sites say there is a USB charging port. Has to be somewhere on that battery....look close again!
-
I will look on the bottom where it plugs into the charger when I get out to the garage.
-
Keep us informed! :azn:
-
I have it in the house and the wife is inspecting it now. She couldn't find it neither.
-
Bet it's under a "flip up" cover maybe?
-
You 2 got me goin, so I did some looking earlier this am & didn't find much. So I googled it, "usb port on jiffy propane auger", & it led me to "jiffyonice.com/Service-Support". Is it a E6 Lightning, Model 56? If it is there was 1 of those at the top of the search page that had integrated USB port highlighted. That led me to a spot where you could sign in & email the company directly. Just a thought.
-
Exactly what I did too, Gunner. All the sites say it has the port...I even looked at the replacement battery for it, and thats where it says the port is. I gotta get to a store today and take a looksee....unless Barry unravels the mystery!
-
The suspense is killing me..... :rotflmao:
-
ME TOO!   ;)
-
:rotflmao: :rotflmao: You guys are great! I pushed and felt around for a secret opening and pushed on labels in case they covered it up and I don't see it anywhere. I went to their facebook page and made a comment about the USB port and it disappeared as a we will review your comment and it never came back up. SO I mentioned it on a post below that and it is still there. I did leave a message at the Jiffy headquarters. Will see if they respond to me. I also left an email to them. BUT I got the fishhouse out yesterday and what a smooth auger. I couldn't be more happy with it. It turns slower than a gas one and cuts great. Then I lowered it down a little and hit the reverse and it cleaned the ice out of the hole great!!! That worked better than I thought it would. I love it. Wish it had a USB Port.. :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :happy1: :happy1:
-
:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :happy1:
-
And Gunner it is a battery powered auger. The battery alone is $175. You'd think it would have a USB for that kind of jing.
-
As long as you're OK with it. :happy1: Just curious, is it the E6 Lightning, model 56 I mentioned? That's about the only 1 in their line up that had all the features you talked about. Kinda funny that they'd have the USB port in the discription & there wasn't 1 there. :bonk: Is it a new model? Nobody else has bought 1 & brought this to their attention?
-
Yup that's the one Gunner. I think this is the first year of them. That made me a little nervous but seems like a great auger other than our USB problem. Puzzles me too as to why they use it as a selling point even though it is not there. Curios to talk to them and hear the excuse.
-
Maybe they never told the battery maker to put a USB port on it... Glad ya like it, Barry! That's all that counts! Maybe the USB stands for "Unknown; Somewhere Barry". :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Ok I am impressed. I had an email already this morning from Jiffy. They disabled the USB on the earlier models but are waiting for the new stock that should have the USB on them and they will send me one of them when they get them. I asked for a powerhead cover and a hat instead. We will see. SO I looked and yes on the powerhead I can see a rubber plug that must be covering up the USB. Why would it be on the powerhead??? So you have to have the auger in the house to use the USB??? Oh well at least we know the skinny on this.
-
good detective work boys!!!! :happy1:
-
 Good to hear that they were quick to respond. :happy1: I'd probably  took 'em up on their offer of a new powerhead just in case I'd ever want to be able to use it. In your case, where almost all of your use will be in your wheelhouse that's usually not very far from where you live, maybe not. Especially the way it's designed so you need the auger inside the house to use the USB. New model & probably not that many in service yet, I'd been more than a little suspicous  if they didn't get back to you pretty quick.
-
You are right Gunner. I can see my fishhouse out my window when I am sitting in my comfy chair watching Vikes games. Maybe 300 yards from the house. They just emailed me back and are going to send me a powerhead cover. I gave them a big thank you!
-
 :happy1: Always good to hear of a U.S. company that stands behind their product & has good CS.
-
Barry woulda just got tangled up in the USB cord anyway. ;)
