Title: how to keep the briers off a long coat of a hunting dog?
Post by: shanee on October 10/10/08, 05:36:33 PM
I've got a german wired hair, and every time we come back from hunting i spend an hour cleaning all the stickers and briars out of his coat. Is there something other than shaving him to keep him clean? I have heard that olive oil or any kind of all natural oils might work. What info do you have for me

Ive heard of using the oils.... thing is ya got to wash the dog every time to get the stuff off after hunting,(and thats a bigger chore than brushing/removing stickers) unless ya want it leaching onto furniture, carpet etc., and I imagine it may do something to the tick repelant people use.... I have an english setter with alot of feathering, not the short haired feild trial type, so I know where youre comming from... get a good brush, sometimes one of those matt cutters help to break up the masses of stickers ya get sometimes... Ive also thought about getting one of those protective vests that cover the chest and belly, then all ya have left to clean up is the legs and head....

Pam... cooking spray works great to help in areas such as feet, arm pits around the ears, but ya.... it can be messy but usually wipes off ok a good bath then a hair conditioner will help with the grooming out those burrs also

When I hunted over my English Springer Spaniels I would always take them in and get a Hunters Cut. These reduced time spent combing after being in the field. A vest also helps and adds some protection for the dog.

Don't even mess with oils or Pam. Go to Fleet Farm to the horse section and buy a bottle of any of the Show Sheen's. They arry several brands and they are all the same. Don't care what kind of dog yo have, this stuff is great . Burrs are removed easily and the dogs dry off quicker and do not get as dirty. Been using it for 5 years and love it. DO NOT apply in an area you want to walk in. It is really slick.
