Title: Winter Kill on Crystal lake (Blue Earth)
Post by: KTapper on March 03/23/09, 09:09:03 PM
Looks like there are dead fish showing up at the landing. I have heard of some nice walleye belly up, and some carp too. It is sad seeing this happen to lakes, and I hope that lake Crystal can rebound from this and become a good fishery again.

Yeah they stocked a lot of fish in that lake. I hope that it can rebound and if the aereator wasn't working they get it fixed.

Just got back from walking the shore at lake crystal and all I can say is wow!  very sad sight. The news crew lined up a few walleyes on shore and they were all over 5 lbs! There is a sand beach north of the access and A guy that was with us pulled two walleyes out of the water that were bigger than 26 inches! very nice fish anywhere! There was no crappies or little walleyes on shore .

Just got back from Crystal today to see for myself sad sad sad.... Drummer I brought a tape measure and found atleast 6 or more that were 30" fish. I also saw a lot of channel cats and one really big one, no pike and just one perch, and tons of carp.

Is this a smaller lake?
Not to deep?
Does the lake have springs or creeks?

Usually the larger fish will die first from lack of oxygen.

An airiator could be added to the lake to supliment the lack of oxygen.

yes this is a smaller lake and gos all the way down to like 8 feet i think and its really low right now and yes there is one creek that runs into it that i know of and there is an airiator that was on it .......that is why i was thinking this could of been stoped

Did they shut the airiator off?

Who regulates the airiator? The DNR or the city?
If it's a stock pond, usually the DNR does....

Maybe due to budget cuts....they shut it off?

Yea, they could have avoided it then.

the areator was never shut off ! big open hole all year! The deepest water i found last fall was 7.5 feet.

I talked to some locals and they said the areator has 5 bubblers on it and they claimed that only one of them was working. I don't know the true facts but that is what I heard.
