Title: I got a new dog!!
Post by: Mayfly on August 08/28/06, 08:35:52 AM
So I met a Lady this weekend who has a GSP that is 3 (?) years old. She said she paid a good amount of money for the dog and over the past years she has sunk approx. $5,000.00 into training. She told me all the info about the lines the dog came from but I can't rememeber all that stuff now. Anyways she doesn't hunt and she feels really bad that the dog doesn't have anyone to hunt with so we began to talk. Her brother...I think it was her brother, used to hunt him but he has moved away due to his job so now the dog is on his own this hunting season. She doesn't want to get rid of the dog but she wants someone to hunt the dog.

So everytime I go hunting I will just pick him up and off we go. In a couple weeks after the fair is over we are going to make a few trips to the hunt club and preserve that he was trained at. She wants me to meet his trainer and get adjusted with the dog and learn him a bit before we dissapear for a weekend.

I am really excited about this! She is going to send me a pic and I will post it as soon as I get it!

His name is Skip.

What a deal!  All the fun without the responsibility of owning a dog.  I had a deal like that when I first started hunting pheasants.  The dog was a golden retriever with no formal training or blood lines but came from good hunting stock.  My neighbor only hunted on the opener so he told me to use his dog anytime I wanted to.  I would pull up in the alley by his house and Copper would come bounding out of his dog house and into the back end of my station wagon and away we would go.  By the end of the season (Iowa) the dog went from about 90 lbs. to about 65 lbs. and was in the best shape of his life (I wish I could say the same for me).  Because of this experience, I bought the first of several Springers I have had over the years.  Maybe the lady will let you have the dog for a good price if things work out but if not, at least you will have the enjoyment of hunting with it.  Let us know how the dog turns out.

What about Luci?  Now doen't she need someone to hunt her, or does she take the season off?

Once the season starts they will both hunt. It will be nice having two dogs but maybe harder to handle. It will be interesting. Luci doesn't take much attention in the field, she knows what she is doing...I guess it will depend onhow this other dog is.
