Title: Bathing a Lab???
Post by: Benny on September 09/14/06, 01:02:35 AM
OK,now I have heard everything.

My friend stopped over last night to have a beer.
I was in the middle of giving Mandy a bath, she gets that lab oder after a few times in the water and swamps.

So any way, he tells me I am nuts to bathe  a lab.
It takes the oil out of their hair and they won't shed water when it rains!!

Now I don't know everything about dogs, but this can't be true??

I give her a bath once ever other month and more during the hunting seasons.

I have never noticed any ill effects nor have I seen her NOT shed water off when it rains.

Any one know if there is any reason not to give a lab a bath, using shampoo for dogs?

You are just fine bathing your dog.  The facts about bathing if you bath him everyday for a couple of months it would dry his skin terribly and cause skin conditions but monthly or even 2 times per month is just fine. Now when it comes to chessies you do want to be extra careful as this breed try does have a down coat with oils and will strip the oils from the coat and skin causing bad bad skin problems.

Repellent issues ???

isn't there special shampoo you can use to help keep their coat/skin from drying out?  and also, i heard that people will feed their lab a raw egg with their food every once in a while during the season.  does that do anything?

Raw egg is fine vitamin A&E is really good for skin. You can also give fish oil caplets, that is also very good for coat and skin.

As for shampoo I'm a cosmetologist by trade and there is really no better shampoo for dogs out there. I personally like mane and tail shampoo. It is full of moisturizers.

Thanks Vickie, I only bathe her when she starts to give off the musky dog oder .
So it ends up maybe once a month, and I use a shampoo for pets that my vet sold me.
