Photos: Fire as sculptor
On Sept. 12, 2011, a mix of dry air and strong winds met up with what was then a relatively small forest fire east of Ely in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. Over the next six hours, the Pagami Creek Fire stampeded east across the BWCA, torching 92,000 acres.
It was the largest forest fire in the region since the 1890s. Earlier this month, Outdoors Editor Dave Orrick spent a week exploring the charred landscape.

Photos: Life returns to BWCA fire area.Seven months after the Pagami Creek Fire burned 92,000 acres in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northern Minnesota, life is returning — both human and wild.
Workers from the U.S. Forest Service have re-opened the most popular lakes and paddling routes, and campers are plying the waters once again, albeit in an alien landscape. Meanwhile, plants, accustomed to an ecosystem that regularly burns, are beginning to sprout as well. Earlier this month, Outdoors Editor Dave Orrick spent a week paddling, hiking and camping the area.
