Cummings Fire
Afternoon Update Sept. 3, 2012
CONTACT: Becca Manlove, Information Officer, West Zone, Superior National Forest, 218-343-3026 or 218-365-7600
LOCATION: Township 64, Range 14, Section 28 (southwest corner), on a peninsula separating the west end of Cummings from the northeast side of Otter Lake.
DATE DETECTED: September 2, 2012
SIZE: Estimated at thirty plus acres
CAUSE: Unknown
AGENCY: Superior National Forest, West Zone
ASSIGNED RESOURCES: One Type 3 helicopter, and fourteen firefighters.
SPECIAL MESSAGES: Control line on the eastern flank was completed today. Air resources held the western flank last night and this morning. This afternoon, a hand crew began constructing line on the western flank from Otter north to the head of the fire. Another crew is building line from Cummings Lake west toward the head of the fire to contain the northern flank.
CLOSURES: There are no official closures at this time; however, camping on Otter Lake is not recommended. An official list of closures if there are any, will be added to this update tomorrow.

Fort Frances #53 (Norway Point) Fire
Fort Frances #53, the Canadian Fire on Norway Point of Basswood Lake, moved farther to the east today. It remains on the Canadian side of the international boundary. U.S. and Canadian crews are monitoring it closely.
Cloquet Line Fire
Location: one half mile north of gravel pit off the Cloquet Line, south of the southwestern corner of Cedar Lake.
Date Detected: September 3, 2012
Size: approximately one quarter of one acre
Resources: Forest Service Floatplanes, Type 3 Helicopter, and a ground crew
Message: This fire was discovered during a fire patrol flight. Fire fighters now have a line completely surrounding the fire and are working on mopping up hot spots.

CAUSE: Unknown
AGENCY: Superior National Forest, West Zone
ASSIGNED RESOURCES: One Type 3 helicopter, and sixteen firefighters. Other aircraft are available if needed.
SPECIAL MESSAGES: As noted in yesterday’s update, crews made good progress in creating control lines around the fire. Additional work will be required on the northwest corner. Predicted precipitation did not materialize. Conditions continue to be very dry but winds are expected to be light. Beartown, a 10-person crew from Michigan arrived to assist. Today they will be flown in to relieve local crews so that local crews are available for initial attack.
CLOSURES: With the exception of a few individual campsites, there are no closures at this time. Stay tuned for potential campfire restrictions.

Fort Frances #53 (Norway Point) Fire
Fort Frances #53, the Canadian Fire on Norway Point of Basswood Lake, is at 12 hectares (approximately 30 acres). This fire will be monitoring today by Canadian and US aerial resources as well as a Forest Service ground crew.
Cloquet Line Fire
Location: one half mile north of gravel pit off the Cloquet Line, south of the southwestern corner of Cedar Lake.

Size: approximately one quarter of one acre
Resources: A ground crew will continue mop-up and monitoring of this fire.
