A Minnetonka, Minn., couple's north woods canoe trip ended tragically when their boat capsized and the man was lost in the rapids of a river along the Canadian border.

Seventy-five-year-old Elaine Barber and her 78-year-old husband, Dick, were on a three-week wilderness trip when their canoe overturned Sunday in the rapids of the Basswood River in Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. Elaine Barber swam to shore and called for her husband, who didn't make it out of the cold rapids.

Elaine Barber told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that she was able to swim to the canoe to retrieve their supplies, including an emergency locator. She sent one distress signal Sunday night and another the next morning before a helicopter rescue team reached her. The Ontario Provincial Police reported that divers recovered the body of her husband in Basswood Lake on Thursday afternoon.
