Aint no smelt left to report any runs!!!If there is a run it is short and measured in hours. I did it in the 60s garabge cans full 60gallon ones,in the 70 5gal pails if you stayed a couple nights you may get 8-10,In the 80s it was hit and miss to fill one 5 gal pail.By 1988 if I dipped and got any more than 4 in a dip I was doing good thats the year I quit.
The commercial netters never quit and netted themselves right out of work!Same with herring, whitefish they been netted to near extinction

Smelt run was huge back in the day, nowadays it is mostly done with seines along Park Point. Up to a few days ago we had ice right up on shore still, have not looked today but I believe the wind has moved it off shore some but all it takes is the wind to come back out of the East to stack it up again.

SMELT RUN is on here in Duluth, smelters have been doing well the past few nights along Park Point and dippers are seeing some showing up in the rivers. Pretty late start but then again we still have ice out on the big lake.

The finger of land is called Park Point, the water closest to you is the harbor and the water beyond Park Point is Lake Superior, THE POND... As you can see there is still a lot of ice and it is not that far off shore, a change of wind will blow it back onto the beach and put a hold on smelting.. May 17th and we still can feel the chill of winter here.
