Glenn if you get my way I'll take some,How many yah gotz? A whole bunch may be to many for us maybe 1/2 bunch.
LPS in grocery stores they call em spring onions, small bulbs and large green stems and sweeter than the summer onions they are excellent for anything using raw onion,Kinda taste like scallions but bigger.

Very cool Glen.  Sounds like fun.  Have you ever grown them in the house to use all winter?  I was just reading about that. AND it said do not plant them near green beans or peas.  lol  how about that.  I may try to raise some in the house....

LPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your winter onions went in the mail today. my wife called and said you should recieve them by saturday. enjoy.

find a spot to plant them. i'd just loosen up the ground, rake it off to the side so its about 1/2 deep. scatter the onions about and cover them up. they dont need to be very deep. most those i picked where laying on top of the ground and had already established roots!!

dew you will have yours sat morning also.

6k, since I now have my sets from Glenn, the dumb questions: Once I plant them, and they grow...I pull'em up and eat them. So, what makes them continue "on"...do I have to keep planting sets, or what? As in, tomatos put out more fruit...so do other crops, I'm not sure on the onion thing.... Or, is there a different green top type that seeds itself from roots or something? Don't tell me I haveta keep poking sets in the ground....

I thought winter onions were  the kind you planted in the spring and plucked some but let them stay growing for later picks??
Title: Re: winter onions
Post by: glenn57 on February 02/07/17, 07:44:45 PM
Don't harvest all of them. Let a bunch grow. Somewhere about mid to end of June they will start "flowering" or better put producing seeds on the top. By fall they will look like the things I gave you. Before it freezes just replant those sets that grew off the tops.

 Hope this helps!

Reb, yea ya kinda have to it keeps them thinned out. They eventually fall off and will start growing. There isn't hardly any work to these if you don't want to.

ok I said that wrong, but I think that's what we had for along time..   can they be planted in a pail or something and keep going??
Title: Re: winter onions
Post by: glenn57 on February 02/07/17, 08:01:20 PM
Yea they could but I don't see a pail holding much. And yes they can keep going provided you leave some so they are allowed to reseed.

Not positive, but I think they're all batch #2. I might have planted the others too deep....they were in kinda tough shape from being bagged in garage all winter. I shoulda opened up the bag to give 'em some air..they got kinda mushy.

I planted about 20 of your onions Glenn.  We weeded last night and could only find 3 that came up.  They are about 3" tall.  Will be fun to see how they do.  I found some of the bulbs that were hollow.  I also found a small light tan caterpillar about an inch long.  Actually two of them.  Wonder what they are???

Well, they're not normal onions...I think they're Smurf scallions!!

Maybe an onion fly larvae...see the pic..

Well I am out of winter onions.  No I didn't eat a single one of them.  A few survived the winter and came up in my raised garden.  I pulled the grasses around them and then there were only 3, then down to 2, then only one left and I looked today and it is gone.  It was about 6" high and looking healthy.  I think something took them.  There are no tracks so a critter reached in and swiped them.  Deer??

The lead thing in red squirrels must be contagious.  They all die from it up here too.  I don't have many grays so we leave them alone.

Hey thanks much Glenn.  I did buy some sets and planted them after the critters took the ones you sent me.  Mine are growing great and it is the first time I have planted onions.  Will plant yours for next year and look forward to it.  How deep should I plant them and when should I plant them?
Title: Re: winter onions
Post by: glenn57 on August 08/13/17, 06:42:11 PM
Plant them as soon as you get them. Just let them go they will be fine over winter. Just make sure there covered with snow or something.

You don't need to plant them deep. Make a little trench no more then an inch deep put sets in and cover a bit with dirt.

no biggy. They will go in the mail today. :happy1:

To plant them just make a 3/4 to 1 inch deep trench, row stick them in the trench and put dirt over the top. They will come growing together. The smaller bunches you can plant together and bigger ones you can break apart. It isn't uncommon for them once there established to grow together anyway.

The key is next year when you start to use them is to let some leftover so they reproduce the seeds. You can then let them fall or pick them and replant them.

Mine are planted in a mixture of sun and shade. They seem to like a somewhat dandy soil. I did have some in done pretty good black dirt and seemed to do good there though.

Good luck with them and enjoy. :happy1:

Yea I would plant them soon. Will give them a good start for next spring. In late fall I usually cover them some with leaves. Helps a bit for winter protection. But the frozen ground won't kill them.
