3 weeks ago my brother asked me if I wanted to build joining cabins on our land up north. My wife said yes so the process got started. With a lot of luck we broke ground Thursday. Sewer plan was approved, concrete guy had an opening open up. Found a plumber to do the rough in. Formes are up and we are scheduled to pour concrete next Saturday.
The plan is to get the concrete done this fall so we don't have to wait next spring until the frost is out of the ground before we get started. Framers will be able to start as soon as most of the snow is gone.
-
:happy1: nice!! By joining cabins do you mean 1 structure but 2 separate family cabins?? kinda how I interpreted it?
-
that sounds great!! good for you guys!!! :happy1: :happy1:

Yes, each of us will have a 32×30 area with a shared utility room.
Propane furnace, hot water heater, electric panel, well pressure tank.
-
We will then get rid of both campers.
-
Sounds like a good plan. :happy1: as long as you get along with the brother :rotflmao:
I gotta say since mom turned the cabin over to my brother and I it's gone really well. And believe it or not we don't always see eye to eye!! :rotflmao:
-
so 32 x 60? decent sized!!

yep sounds like a GTG to me. :rotflmao:

That's neat dk! So you didn't have to dig out black dirt before adding class 5 for settling reasons?

not sure about where he is at in the Remer area but where we are at black dirt is pretty hard to come by

He scraped off the grass and top 3 inches. Rest of what he dug out was clay. They brought in 3 load of sand. We are doing a 4 inch slab with 1 foot thick edges on top of 2 inch insulation. Half inch rebar.

I get along with him great. He has heart disease that's winning. Last test said it was at 39 %. When he gets to 35% he will qualify for disability. He said he's selling everything and moving up to God's Country and live where he can do whatever he wants.
-
That is great for you and your brother. That will be awesome. Since you are putting the foam under the slab are you going to put pex in the too? I would recommend it. Sure makes for awesome heat.

It happened so fast this fall we didn't have time or a contractor to do it. Just very happy to have the cabin getting started.
-
Sucks to hear about your brothers heart issue! Best start hitting up garage sales for stuff to equip that cabin. :happy1: :rotflmao:
-
so what part of the state is the cabin???
-
so what part of the state is the cabin???
Straight east of boy river 4 miles
-
20 minutes from federal dam access/campgrounds.
-
Great area!
-
Leach, Wini, cass plus hundreds of smaller lakes. Thousands of acres of public land. Love the area
-
Beautiful area there.
-
Damn, you are moving fast. Like I mentioned it's really hard to get anyone to do this type of work up there even if you are standing there with cash in hand. You were really lucky. This Saturday looks like a great day to pour concrete. Of course, you will miss out on some bow hunting. lol. Keep pushing them along the more you get done this fall the quicker the build will go in spring. Can't wait to see the final product. Let me know if you need help with something this spring and I will stop in to lend a hand.
-
Awesome!! Be sure to have pug ins for campers and ice castles, and enough power for the band and concessesions.

Right. It would be a nice area for a MNO GTG. ;)
-
We already have 1 camper plug in. Might have to add a few more. It's a 200 amp service.
-
Hope it's sketter free!!🙄 :sleazy: :rotflmao:
-
Insulation, plumbing rough in, and concrete is poured. Turned out smooth as glass.
-
How cool is that? Nice job!
-
Awesome!! :happy1:
-
sweet!!!

Crazy how fast things can happen. You will have to tell me your secret. Perhaps you had something hanging over the concrete guy's head. :rotflmao:
-
Maybe the concrete guy had a body he needed to bury.
:sorry: #TooDark :embarrassed:

This long warm spell helped and the chance for him to make more money.

Walls are up and the rafters are set. Builders crew is only 2 guys. The youngest one retired last winter. Lol. They may be slower but darn they are accurate. Just for fun we checked the spacing between the wall boards. We couldn't find any that weren't square or not exactly 16 on center. The builder also only uses number 1 grade boards. Part of the reason we chose them.

Looks like a regular dance floor there. Should be a great place to go to very soon.

Cool as heck Jerry. I built a great garage years ago and was proud of it. Your project is awesome.

Dad is really showing his age. 50 years of being a diabetic is starting to catch up with him.
-
I let my youngest daughter do all the building and planning of the interior walls. I just helped when she needed an extra pair of hands. I let her make a few small mistakes. She learns from her mistakes better than when I just tell her what to do. I'm proud of her.
-
I'd say your Dad is doing real good then!! and that is great what your doing with your daughter!!!! kudo's to you!!!!
-
I can't help it... When I frame up walls, I can't keep myself from measuring them like I'm building an heirloom jewelry box.
And then when I try to make an heirloom jewelry box, the edges and corners usually turn out looking like I built it out of 2x4s. :doah: :bonk:
-
Good looking building dk !!!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:

Progress is slow and steady. When the builders started in the spring there were 3 workers. The youngest retired so they were down to 2. About amonth ago the one guys wife had a heart attack. 3 days later his son was out in California for a grandkids soccer tournament and had a heart attack and died. Needless to say he hasntbeen back to work. The crew is down to one guy. I told him to take his time so as not to die. As long as he is done before the snow flies works for me. This will be his last house he ever builds. He is looking forward to retirement. He thinks he'll be finished in 2 weeks. We have our electrical inspection thursday. Hopefully we pass the first time. Then we can insulate and put up the sheet rock.

Hey, its hard to find good help and guys willing to work.
As for the cabin, life is a journey, not a destination. Its good of you to kept all of that in perspective thru this whole process.

The stroke I had 2 years ago changed me a little bit. Near death experiences have a tendency to do that.
-
Outside of the cabin is done for this year. We will do the landscaping next year. The furnace and gas lines will get done end of the week andthen the spray insulation will get done on the 9th. Hopefully we can get the sheet rock done quickly so they atic can get the blown insulation. Finish electrical so we have lights for deer hunting.

I've been thinking we screwed up. Maybe should have put the entry doors on the ends off the cabin. That snow is going to slide off and make big piles of snow in front of the doors.
-
You can put those things on the roof so it won't slide off by the doors.
