Killin' deer is one part terminal ballistics of the bullet (velocity, penetration depth, expansion, weight retention, etc.), one part shot placement, and one part "luck" as it relates to how far a terminally hit deer decides to run before it falls over dead.
The first article talks about how the .350 Legend is on par with the .30-30 ballistically. It isn't until you get out to 200 yards that the .350 Legend drops 1.7" more than the .30-30. .30-30 WIN. VS. .350 LEGEND (https://www.themeateater.com/hunt/firearm-hunting/caliber-battle-30-30-win-vs-350-legend)
"These cartridges stack up so closely from a ballistics standpoint that neither can claim to hit harder than the other."
The second article talks about how the .30-30 OUTPERFORMS the .308 and .30/06 killing deer UNDER 100 yards. Who'da thunk it? Field and Stream: A .30/30 Is All You Need (If You Know How to Hunt) (https://www.fieldandstream.com/hunting/powerful-30-30-winchester-cartridge/)
How could the ancient .30/30 possibly outperform two 30-caliber cartridges that are considered by many to be the best big-game cartridges of all time? The answer is simpler than you might think. With conventional bullets, the higher velocities of the .308 and .30/06 cause more bullet erosion, which reduces weight, and in turn, penetration.
You might argue that the higher impact velocities of the latter tend to create more tissue damage. That’s true, and if sufficient penetration is reached by all three of these, the ones fired from the .308 and .30/06 might in fact put an animal down faster. But not any deader, and none of that is quantifiable.
Taken both of these arguments together - AND if you want to use an AR to hunt deer... Why not the .350 Legend and why now now? :happy1:
