Title: Turkey Time
Post by: The General on May 05/12/23, 09:31:38 AM
Hello gentlemen and lady(Glenn).  The plan was to see my buddy HD around 8PM yesterday but my daughter's double header softball games turned that into 11PM before I made it.   HD and I had a couple cold ones and caught up and hit the hay around midnight.   This was my first time actually hunting turkeys.   We were up at 5AM and in the blind by 5:15.  HD got on the call and we heard gobbles from 3 different directions.   The gobbles seemed to be going away from us and pretty much stopped.   A deer came into the field and we watched her for a bit before she returned back into the trees.   At about 6:45 we saw a hen enter the field.  HD gave a few calls and we heard a gobble in the woods.  Now HD with the rest of the story.......

It's not roadkill so obviously you wouldn't recognize it.

Welp, the rest of the story....

The hen came on the field and wandered towards our setup. I thought "sweet"! We got a live decoy... she made it half ways and the Tom's stepped out of the woods. You could tell that they were leary and kept stretching their necks out. But, they still moved in our direction. I kept the calls down to a slow purr that kept them interested. Once they were in range, they locked up and stretched their necks out and G beaded up on the bigger one and let er fly. He tanked him and also knocked down the other. I still had my tag open, so it worked out well. The younger bird wasn't dead....so I pulled a Derric Choven and put pressure on his neck till he "expired".....

Then with that, we cleaned up the birds, got um packed up and went fishing.... Where we caught our limits of big blue gills.

Nope.   I don't remember the last time that happened.   However I do try and forget those mornings.   We were so good yesterday that even when we were out fishing just when it looked like we were going to get trained on the storm parted and went around is on both sides.   We should have probably bought a lottery ticket.
