I hope the gun owner looses his carry permit over this one.
As for the culpability of the store... There is only so much they can do if someone does something stupid. I'm assuming they took custody of the firearm as soon as they were notified, contacted authorities, and are cooperating in every way possible. I'm not surprised they are not commenting publicly on the issue.

Yup can't even imagine taking my gun out of my holster out in public let alone leave it unattended in any matter. He should loose at least his carry rights if they can track him down.

I guess because fit seems to hit the shan in any place out of the blue. Makes no sense why the person took it off in the first place

So many questions. I do wonder why, if he was so concerned, (as he should have been) why he didn't bring this to the attention of either store security or law enforcement immediately.

Lots of interesting aspects to this story. First of all ND is a "right to carry" state, so no permit is needed by anyone. Or able to be revoked, as one person suggested. It seems to work well for the state since they have less violent gun crime in a year than Minneapolis does in a weekend.
Second, all kids should be taught that if they find a gun to leave it alone and tell an adult. That is straight out of the NRA's Eddie Eagle GunSafe program. If every school was required to take 10 minutes to teach this each year, firearm related accidents with children would drop drastically. It sounds like the two 5-6 year old boys in the story did this, and should be applauded even though no one cared apparently.
Finally, this story shows how prevalent idiots are in our society. The gun owner is an idiot and should be identified and ridiculed for their irresponsible (though not illegal) behavior. Thankfully nothing tragic happened or it was not stolen. This person is about as smart as those who leave their cars running and unlocked to go into the store in the middle of winter. The person who spotted the gun was also an idiot as apparently it was more important for him to ride the ferris wheel than take any sort of responsible action. It was only hours later, after deep reflection, he contacted Scheels corporate and the news media to tell his story.

To many questions from this poorly written article. And the guy who saw this going down is also an idiot for not handling this right then and there.
While I don't condone leaving a firearm unattended (in public)...every time I've purchased a firearm from a store like that, they have trigger locks in place when you leave (i think all guns sold come with them nowdays????). Did the guy have his gun locked? Was it still in the box? Was there an employee watching over the belongs (guessing the Ferris wheel operator was)?
Edit: I was able to watch the video...never mind. The owner of that gun is a complete tool.
I just don't see the value in this poorly written, non story.

Savage. Thanks for the clarification on the carry permit situation I was not aware of that. With that in mind there should be charges or something that can be done for leaving a weapon unattended like that in public, even if it's the wild west of ND.
