Title: Gophers
Post by: LPS on August 08/29/24, 04:59:17 PM
I see the Gophers play UNC at 7 but bad weather is supposed to hit there at kickoff time so KFAN just said they delayed start to 8.  UNC favored by 1.5

I got my dotch nap in but damn,  hope I make it at least till 1/2 time.

This delay gave dutchy more time to stick pins in his PJ doll!

I can't understand why Fleck hasn't been hired away by Georgia. I mean I'm sure they could fire somebody and appoint P.J. head of the cheer squad.

He can sing, he can dance, he can recruit, he can talk the talk, he can accept credit for the team the previous coach assembled but there is no proof he can coach.

For all of you who praise him for making a bowl game check out how many D1 teams there are, how many bowls games there are. My opinion is you should be fired if you DON'T make a bowl game.

For the record.....I love me some "smoke & mirrors". He has provided more BS with fewer results since Brewster was run out of town.    :happy1:

I just got done watching the final half since I recorded it.  Darn.  2 missed FG and the holding call on the last drive was too much to overcome.  We hung in there but fell short.  The QB fumble didn't help neither.

There are 70 teams that make it to Bowl games. 1 team could not go. So they looked at academics to pick number 71.....

That was the Gophers. Or else they would have been staying at home. :doofus: :doofus:

Big 10 Football Coach PJ Fleck should be winning his opening game against flippin' North Carolina in his 8th season (or 7th as PJ like to count, because that first year was "Year 0") and it shouldn't even be close.   :embarrassed:

Blame the kicker.  Blame the offense.  Blame the defense.  Blame the coach.  PJ was right...  Last night's performance WAS a team loss.  And now the team is sittin' in a hole coming out of the gate.

Title: Re: Gophers
Post by: dutchboy on August 08/30/24, 07:47:38 PM
I'll admit LPS he has been much better the last few years as he's gotten his ass beaten all around the Big 10. The D-3 coach found out his rah, rah BS don't work in big boy football. He's fine, the Gophers are what they've always been since the early 60's....just another win for the big boys. Now with the addition of the west coast teams things won't be easier. I truly don't care if he stays or goes but I just wish everybody would admit this is a bottom third program. It might now even be a bottom 1/4 if he doesn't start beating the cupcakes.

I see Johnson broke his leg and is out for the season. I hate to see that happen to anybody.

So Dutch, is there a team that you really enjoy watching?  I get so upset about Vikes stuff and now more into the Gophers.  BUT as I have gotten older I realized it is a game.  LOLOL
Title: Re: Gophers
Post by: dutchboy on August 08/30/24, 08:28:29 PM
I don't watch sports like I use to except for baseball. I like baseball, the game. I'm not a die hard Twins fan. Don't really care about the Vikings, I follow them but if they lose it doesn't bother me. I've gotten away from the Wild. I wouldn't watch a basketball game if they were playing in my living room.   :rotflmao:

To answer your question I enjoy good teams but don't really care who wins. Maybe it's because I don't do fantasy leagues or gamble on any games anymore. It's a game, nothing more. I really do enjoy tweeking the guys when the hometown team gets beat.  :happy1:

Nobody should take anything I write as a personal attack because nothing means enough to me to care what anybody else thinks.

Title: Re: Gophers

I hear ya Dutchy. I don't expend much emotional capital on any of it anymore. Used to love the Twins. I could look forward to listening to Bert and Dick many an evening after chores. Once they decided they really didn't give a rip about making their games easily accessible to those of us out here in the land of rocks and cows, I stopped following. Their woke virtue signaling didn't help. Ditto with the Viqueens. The Wild? They've done nothing for me. Professional hockey died for me once the North Stars left. Timberwolves? Couldn't give two chits. Only 2 seasons since their inception that they've been worth a crap. Whoopie doo. That & the NBA overall sucks. I follow Gopher BB because I still remember the days of Mychal Thompson, classmate, sort of, and long for their return. Every once in a while I've seen a glimmer of hope, a Jordan Murphy, a Reggie Lynch, a Trevor Mbakwe, a Daniel Oturu, an Amir Coffey, etc., only to be disappointed when they leave or get in trouble. The NIL money has pretty well ruined that. And Gopher football, despite being my alma mater, about all that does anymore is give me more reason to grumble about a University that has become increasingly out of touch with its rural residents. That has become steadily worse since the days of watching QB Tony Dungy while sitting in the student section of old Memorial Stadium. Keep it up and I will be a Jackrabbits fan.  :happy1:
Title: Re: Gophers
Post by: LPS on August 08/31/24, 08:10:47 AM
I like the Jackrabbits as we have relatives in the Brookings area and went there a lot as a kid.  Was a big deal to go into the big town of Brookings.  I am a fan now.  Kind of like watching NDSU too.  So surprised they both have such good teams.

Post by: Steve-o on September 09/03/24, 08:06:16 AM
To me the success of Bison and Jackrabbits reminds me of how many good college hockey teams we have in MN:  the Gophs, St. Cloud, the Duluth Bulldogs, and Minnesota State Mankato.

It tells me there are a lot of talented athletes in this area and a lot of them don't want to play for the U of M in the big city of Minneapolis.

P.S.  The Gophs football team were the only Big 10 team to loose their first game.   :doah:

Rodents win 27-0. As bad as they are, I still would've rather been watching that as opposed to hanging around a wedding reception. Next up: The Hawkeyes at home. Gophers might not win another game the rest of the season. Sharpen yer pins, dutchy!  :rotflmao:

Title: Re: Gophers
Post by: Dotch on September 09/15/24, 08:55:27 AM
Ya, report said they were up 20 - 0 at half. Only scored one touchdown in the 2nd half. Nevada had the ball on the Gopher 16 and the defense picked off a pass to keep them from scoring. I fully expect Floyd will reside in IA City for another year after next week's game.

 What's that smell? ;) Oh wait, glenn must still have some dung on his shoes after he stepped in it big time last night.  :sleazy: :nerd:               ;D ;D   MINNEAPOLIS -- — Kaleb Johnson rushed for a career-high 206 yards and three touchdowns, with two scores in a dominant third quarter that propelled Iowa past Minnesota for a 31-14 victory that gave the bronze pig trophy back to the Hawkeyes on Saturday night.

Having bitterly watched the Gophers hoist Floyd of Rosedale in Iowa last year after a controversial 12-10 loss sealed by a fair catch signal call that negated a punt return touchdown by Cooper DeJean, the Hawkeyes (3-1, 1-0) had a blast in the Big Ten opener on their border-state rival's home turf.

Well they made it interesting at Michigan today but yes still a loss. Next up is USC at home next week. It will be a track meet with USC's racehorse wide receivers vs the plow horse offense of the Gophers. Although it's encouraging that Wisconsin put up a fight against USC in the first half until getting blown out in the second half.

I've been down with the regents working on a lifetime contract for PJ. We believe with this win he has earned a $10 million per year contract with an automatic raise of $2.5 million per year. Because we are sure that he's in such demand that the hang up has been do we require a $5 dollar or $10 dollar buyout when Ohio State comes calling. His automatic lifetime contract would end after his last great  grandchild passes away.

PJ forever!!!! :happy1:

If I could find the game on local TV it would create quite the dilemma.....do I watch PJ's vaunted offense or look for a Bewitched rerun?

Dotch you kinda buried the headline here. A win in Cali will likely qualify the Gophers for the prestigious motor oil bowl game in Detroit. You know, the bowl that allows the Gophers a few more weeks of practice to hone their craft to be able to qualify for the motor oil bowl game again next year. Also it allows (rewards) faculty, friends, alums to travel on the U's (taxpayers) dime while letting us know their share of the game is only a few 100 thousand less then the transportation lodging costs. Besides, it's a business trip. They can discuss tuition hikes and a raise for PJ all on the same trip.   :rotflmao:

My proposed contract would indeed include a $750,000 bonus for Big money coach of the year. Thats in addition to a new BMW of course. For those that think there should be no bonus for winning games, thats what his main contract is for lets remember......he is the most sought after coach at this level of college ball. Akron, Montana State, Niagara Falls, and Augustana would all love to poach PJ and bring his exciting brand of football to there school.

Now that you got me going what is the accumulative record of the teams he's beaten this year? Maybe I can squeeze the U a bit more!!

I'll let you guys in on the plan first. In an effort to squeeze the U for a contract far more than PJ is worth the following will happen in the next couple of weeks.....

PJ will be linked to the Cowboy job after Jerry fires McCarthy in the next day or two.

PJ will be linked to the Jacksonville job after Peterson is fired next week.

I'm thinkin this lifetime contract I'm working on for PJ just might work out!   :dancinred:

I've problems when it comes to PJ. He's winning so many games against the top 134 college teams I can hardly keep up. I think I have the money thing worked out but with the labor strife at Boeing I'm concerned they can't get the jet built. Ol Smoke & Mirrors and his team (6-3) are on NBC vs Rutgers (4-4) today. It's the former Gopher quarterback who can barely play vs the new kid.

It'll be my first chance to see them play. Doubt I'll make it past the 1st quarter but you never know.

Gophers lead 6-0 after their 1st possesion. Missed extra point.

If he's still here (the whole Michigan staff will get fired) he'll hit the portal again. Because of what he's being paid I don't see him leaving. As long as Coyle is here and can get PJ 3-4 yearly cupcake wins he'll qualify for minor bowl games and bonuses. He'd be a fool to walk away from the Golden Goose.

It was a fun game to watch just as the Utah/Iowa State game was after that. That is, if you're into watching football games purely for the sake of entertainment. However, after 60+ years of watching Gopher football, it's a broken record, SSDD. I'll give them their due, They won more games than I would've given them credit for after looking like a team that would be lucky to win any B1G games. See earlier season losses to North Carolina, Iowa, & Michigan. They still have a chance to redeem themselves somewhat against Bucky & bring home the axe. But, even tho the BADgers aren't having a stellar season either at 5 - 6, the Gophers odds of getting a win at Camp Randall are right up there with glenn getting a deer. 4 losses in a row for Bucky. Think Rutgers. Betting that dutchy has that PJ voodoo doll cleaned, pressed and ready to roll. :coffee:

This Wild Wild West of NIL and Transfer Portal ain't good for college athletics - especially football.

Schools like the the UofM can be likened to a AAA baseball league for all the Blue Blood schools.  Yeah, the Gophs will be able to snatch some players like Brosmer from AA ball, but they'll lose the ones that pan out to the Major Leagues and forever be stuck - at best - in the lower-middle tier.

I don't envy coaches at any school having to deal with the constant thrashing, but for the millions they make...  I don't feel bad for them either.   :coffee:

If Indiana getting mauled by Notre Dame last night is any indicator the Gophers are miles behind.

You think any of these middling schools will ever come out and say...."we can't compete in the NIL era and will now concentrate on academics and settle for finishing in the bottom 1/3 of the Big 18."
 :coffee:
Title: Re: Gophers
Post by: Dotch on December 12/21/24, 10:17:12 AM
It's going to be a problem at least for the near future. Schools like Michigan & Ohio St. were doing NIL long before it was legit. Standing joke was a lot of the kids playing for those schools didn't want to turn pro because they'd have to take a pay cut. Everyone else is playing catch up. At the U, they need to clean house at the administrative level before they'll ever be competitive. Tall order and perhaps an insurmountable one in our lifetime. I keep hearing crap about tearing down Willum Arena (Thanks Clem!  :rotflmao: ) and shake my head. Won't matter. As Ilhan Omar would say, it's all about the Benjamins.
Title: Re: Gophers
Post by: dutchboy on December 12/21/24, 10:29:28 AM
The adminastration needs to turn a blind eye to pay-offs, grades, criminals. If you want to run a clean program than you will be mid pack at the very best. Been that way as long as i've been a sports fan. Clem won because Clem got kids who could hoop. If they could go to school, read, stay out of jail all the better. If they couldn't.....whats the point per game average?

Clean winning athletic programs is just like a honest politicion......you might find one but don't be shocked if you can't. What I struggle with is why can't people see that?

Thank you Glenn.

When you lose your kids to the portal it's always appriciated if you can deliver them, hence the need for the plane.

But in all seioursness what you probably saw them talking about was chartering planes to the bowl game. Including players, coaches, bands, cheerleaders, teachers and family they might have as many as 300 people going. As far as the actual fan base, a 6 seater Cessna will do it.

In general, if you enjoy watching NFL Minor League Football, go right ahead and keep watching college football.  It is so broken.  Maybe most of the middling players are still playing for their full-ride scholarship, their school, and for the joy of playing - but now all of the good players (and the ones who think they are or aspire to be) are mostly playing for themselves.

And it ain't like I'm disagreeing with them.  Its a business decision.  If they have a chance to earn life-changing money, I don't blame them for skipping a meaningless (to them) game just so Ol' Smoke and Mirrors can say he was victorious in another meaningless bowl game.

Yeah Duke's Mayo!!!   :cheerleader:  (Can you even buy that stuff in Minnesota? )

In less than 5 years the legit question will be...." Who spends more on players, the Minnesota Twins or the Ohio State Buckeyes?"

Anybody who thinks Goldy can compete in this era is more dislusional than they've been the last 10 years thinking they could win. They're a nice little second division team.

Rodent's 2nd qtr. offense starting to click in the Duke's Tasteless White Sandwich Grease Bowl. 14-7 w/5:07 left in the 1st half. Mutt & Jeff calling the game. Betting the sponsor's were none too happy about the one guy spitting the mayo on a Dilly bar in the wastebasket. Where do they find these clowns? 🤡

I just saw a pic on the front page of the Strib where they poured a 5 gallon pail of mayo on Dutchies favorite coach.  YUK.  Imagine trying to clean that off.

So very, very proud of Fleck. Thats what 7 bowl wins? Who can do that? Pretty soon the bowl teams will have a .500 record so it'll be more impressive.
I have to confess I did'nt watch a play of this riveting bowl game. I can guess there were scouts from the Mountain West schools there looking to see if they could snatch ol PJ away from the Gophers.
Was there a trophy presentation? Were they "elite" in acceptance of it? And I guess todays most important question is can you "row the boat" in mayo?
