I seem to recall a couple or three years ago, there was a rumor of deer rifle zones in most of Minnesota. There were some restrictions and other rules of course but, what ever happened to this potential season?
-
They are still debating it. Comes up every year now.
-
They’ll have to change it soon…all the current rifle hunters will need to hunt down south since the wolves took over the northern portion. 🤣
-
I personally don't see how that's going to come to be, it's a safety thing in my mind!
-
It originally did not start as a safety thing. They started the shotgun thing so they could keep the deer harvest down. Now they are bringing safety up as some want to keep it shotgun only. Yet you can hunt predators and target shoot all you want with rifles.
-
You can shoot rifles all over Wisconsin.

and MO...and I believe Iowa as well...and the Dakota's?
-
Our MN gubmint thinks we need a law for everything.
-
I'm not sure it would make a big difference to many people. I might get back in to deer hunting if I could dust off my .30-30.
Would it change your hunting?

That's pretty much what they said in the article I read. But they did mention the rifle would would be more dangerous at certain angles in farm land.

onewould think thats a no brainer.......from my point of view anyway.
how far does a slug travel before it falls to the ground.vs as high powered rifle bullet????

I have no idea what the predator hunters are shooting, .223? Maybe someone can come up with a chart on how far these rifles shoot, vs slug..

When I'm driving around in areas of the slug zone. I'm forever asking myself, how in the world is that guy going to hit a Deer with a slug from that stand across this field??
-
I grew up in extreme slug zone. When we got out Ithaca Deer Slayers we were top of the line. Instead of aiming my 1100 at the middle of the deers body and letting loose with 2 or 3 rounds hoping it would drop to having to hit a spot on the deer was a learning curve. It is not nearly as populated in the country as it used to be. Small farms got plowed under since farm land is worth over $15,000 an acre. Very few were saved as acreages to live at. SO lots of open ground with farms a mile or two apart these days. Of course some are closer but any responsible shooter can see that. There are a lot more populated areas in the state where rifles have always been used.

I'm not convinced the weapon is as important as the shooter. You still need to use common sense and follow ethical practices. But, I'm preaching to the choir, here.
A guy I know, not too far from me, found the bolt from a crossbow in one of his dairy cows this past fall. The bolt barely penetrated, causing very little damage. That is inexcusable.
He did report it to police but I don't know what happened after that.
-
I'd be more inclined to think that some jack wagon was shootin at the cow far out in the field from his car than than to think a "bow" hunter missed and the bolt flew a far distance and hit the cow.
-
That was discussed as a possibility. Vandalism or mischief as opposed to hunter error.
