I have a chocolate lab springer cross named Duke. He is just over a year old and a great dog. I personaly shot 17 roosters over him this year and he water retrived about 20 ducks for me all before his 2nd birthday. He can sit, lay down, stay, crawl, catch, jump, come, fetch/retrieve, he moves when you say excuse me, he will jump through a car/truck window on command, I even taught him to shut of the bed room lights off for bed time! The only think he and I have not figured out yet is heel. I want to teach him now so we have pleanty of time b4 fall to work on it. If anyone has any tips, pointers or suggestions I will gladly recive them. Thank you for your help!

Not a single person can give a tip on having a dog heel? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

id try a choak chain a leash and alot of time when he gets in front say heel and tug on the leash not hard though just let him know your in control that should take care of it...if hes a good teaching dog should not take long.. thats my advice ive used it and it worked but dogs like people learn differnet get more advice before you try anything... :euro:

I havent responed because I wanted some advanced help with this one here because your dog knows so much you need to have the total control.
I would recommend he invest in a quality stainless steel pinch collar (see not choke collar) and use plenty of repitition with only slight quick tugs for forging ahead repeating "Heel" only. In fact when teaching heel if a dog persists on pulling ahead of my knee side I just turn a complete 180 and go the opposite direction with a "Heel" and again a quick pinch/tug. I don't battle the dog let the collar do the teaching.

the cheapest place that i have found for a pinch collar and most other dog related supplies is www.lcsupply.com . they also have a lead that is called a suitcase handle that looks to be a fairly cheap way to teach a dog to heel, in fact ill be ordering one this week.
just thought id pass this bit of info on to a fellow dog owner!

Thanks guys/gals! So it is fairly simple. I don't know why I have shyed away from heel. I will keep yall updated! ;D

Lion country supply has a lot of great dog training stuff, and theyre good people. Another good tool they have is this stiff short lead made by Delmar Smith, and because its got a "backbone"to it, your dog constantly feels the tension/pressure on his collar...almost like having a stick with a snap-ring on the end. Then ya have more control than a limp rope... I saw Delmar and his son Rick at the Game Fair a few years back doing a seminar on dog training and bought one right away...theyre cheap and work great. -thunderpout 8)
