Lake of the Woods/Rainy River

The temperature in Northern Minnesota has been hot but the fishing on
Lake of the Woods has been even hotter! Huge numbers of fish,
including walleye and sauger, have been taken this week. The majority
of anglers have been down rigging in about 30-34 feet of water. The
hot lures seem to be red or chartreuse Shad Raps, clear and blue
plugs. The mudflats on the north side of Big Traverse Bay continue to
be a hot spot among guides. For those die-hard fisherman trolling
with minnows or leeches along the reefs has been giving up large
numbers of fish, a couple local guides reported catching and
releasing over 100 fish one afternoon. The trophy walleye are out
there for the taking, as they have gone into a feeding frenzy with
the warm weather patterns!
Evening is the best time to catch walleye on the Rainy River; with
most anglers heading out about 8 pm. Crawlers and leeches have been
producing walleyes in 17-19 feet of water. The hot spot on the River
is by Frontier Landing, with some nice walley and sturgeon taken in
that location. The water temperature is still in the mid 70?s, some
locals and tourist alike have been tubing down the river, what a
great way to stay cool and enjoy the scenery.
The Northwest Angle is a great place to escape the heat and get in
some great fishing. The islands have been 10-15 degrees cooler then
the main land all week. Most anglers have been after walleye while
bottom bouncing and jigging in about 22-27 feet of water. Catch and
release has been amazing around the Angle Islands producing many slot
limit fish, along with some keepers.
