Title: Faribault Area
Post by: Stensethfan on December 12/29/08, 07:18:23 PM
Anyone have any ice reports or places to look out for (bad ice) in the Faribault area.  I am not overly concerned with fishing reports unless people want to offer some tidbits.  I have to work down there tomorrow and am thinking of hitting a lake down there before, after or both.  I would like to know if people are driving much yet because I want to maximize my time by not having to pull my shack.  I am mostly looking to get out and try my new portable that I assembled today and any fish would be a bonus.  Thanks in advance everyone!

I know MNO member "letgofishing" does alot of ice fishing out on Cannon Lake and Roberds Lake around Faribault so he may be someone to contact through pm if no one else offers up any helpful info for you. Good luck on the ice if you make it out!   :fishing2:

I found this post from "letgofishing" in another thread if it helps....

Yeah Dan aka "letgofishing" is a fishing machine, he fishes all the time and always has some great pictures that he emails me.

Here is a pic that he sent me a couple days ago from Roberds lake, 20 crappies and 3 sunnies.

That is a good looking picture.  I might have to give mazaska a try and just do the old fashion "fish near the little cities" routine since I do not have much time and just want to try the new house.

Thanks John, stopped in there briefly after working today from about 3 - 4 PM and managed a few gills and a few crappies.  The bigest being a 9 inch crappie.  I just went out about 200 yards from the access and set up in 25 feet of water.  i did not have any bait and only used a Ratso.  there was a solid 15 inches of ice.  The new house is awesome.  Cannot wait until I can actually put some time in and get some dinner!!

There was a Jeep that the front end dropped in on Thursday.  It dropped in at 4PM and they didn't get it out till 8PM.  They had to take the tires off the back and they broke the drive shaft.  Just thought i'd let you guys know.

Sorry about the delay in response of the Jeep that went thru, but where it dipped the ice was off of Bull Rush Bay on Mazaska. When you go off of Bull Rush Bay and go thru the catails there are 2 main paths it would be the path off to the right.  The only reason why I know this is because the guy that I work with, his fish house was only 60 feet away from where that happened.  It is marked with yellow tape now too.  I have pictures of it and will post once I can figure how to download them off my phone to my computer.

Was on Mazaska today for 7 hours and it was very slow.  Tried about every depth and every jig with every artificial and meat I could come up with.  Managed a few small gills and perch and that was it.  Anyone want to stear me in the right direction???

Tried Roberds Monday morning and didn't have even close to that kind of luck.  I must have been using the exact opposite presentation!  My vex was lit up, but nothing did more than sniff my presentation.  I was stumped cause you usually get at least one or two agressive bites out of the school.

Letgo, Happy Belated Birthday!  Sorry i did not make it out and did not post to let you know.  It has been a couple busy days for this guy.  Seems like this whole week is busy.  Last week looked like it was going to be boring...not so much now!  This weekend is Red Lake, when I return hopefully we can hit the ice!!!  The fishing should be getting better every week until Ice out now!

I wish the crappies never left, but the walleye and pike bite has been better than Mille Lacs so I just drive right on by the Big Pond.  Next year I will probably make the one hour drive further north and hit LOW.

How has it been in Faribault?  I think I heard Letgofishing was heading out tomorrow morning?  I will have to check on Sunday when I get home to see how he did!  Good Luck!

Today we went Roberds lake there been fussy watch the hook with wax worm fishfinder 4 times FULL fish wont bite but we caught 2 crappies that's all then we went Mazaska lake and there pretty good fry fish like chicken fingers better than nothing as mixed crappies and sunnies crazy bites we caught n released over 40 fish. fun and released. i heard next weekend suppose be 30 to 40's so sounds should be very GOOD. do that at Roberds lake in the morning then afternoon go Mazaska lake til after dark. i thinking go Roberds early tomorrow morning to 10 to 11am? depend on fish biting. as today the pressure too way high. i see went down pretty slow so this week i believe will be very good...
good time icefishing with Luke today... Thank you for the tip.
other time will kick alots fish someday.

Thanks for the report Buddy!  I am guessing with the rain the we recieved in Cottage Grove tonight the ice is fading fast.  if I am not mistaken most of the same rain fell in Faribault.  Soon open water fishing will be upon us!  Cannot wait to wack some slabs when the ice leaves!

When you filet them make sure you get the tough red meat off them. I would let them soak overnight or longer in milk. Batter them up and fry em! I cooked some up for my Dad and I knew he would have not wanted to try the white bass so I told them they were walleye fillets. After he had eaten most of them I said you know those were White Bass! He said wow those were darn good!

Are you catching all of these on Shields or Masazka?  We were going to go up to the fairbault area to get in this action 2 weekends ago, but we never got up with all that rain and ice!
Crappies and Sunnies have been pretty slow down here, you can catch 10-15 in an afternoon, but nothing of size.
The river has been better, some slab perch and the occasional walleye over 15"
