March here we come! Fishing was solid throughout the month of February. This past week was no different. Guests caught a good amount of Walleyes, not to mention the bonus species like Sauger, Perch, Eelpout, and Tullibee that Lake of the Woods has to offer. The big Walleye for the week, or at least the heaviest, was 29.5 inches and weighed 11.6 pounds. What a fat fish! Pictured below, in front of the blue bomber, are Bill, Chad, and Riley with the trophy. The Northern action has been going, here are a few pictures of nice Pike from last weekend.
The ten day forecast looks great. The weatherman is calling for consistent day time temperatures in the low to mid 30s. A consistent weather pattern and warmer weather is always a good sign for March fishing.
The fish are still holding in deep water. Our houses are set up over 28-32 FOW in “Border View’s Honey Hole” up north, as well as on the south end. As we head into March and start to see more mild weather, the active Walleyes should start to push shallower. Perch are still coming in regularly, however we haven’t seen big schools of them yet. It just seems to be a few here and there. The ones being caught are BIG though. They seem to average around 12 inches with some as big as 14 inches. Saugers continue to vary in size as they have all winter. The small ones are plentiful right now, and are great eating for dinner.
Most of the fish are being caught within a few inches of the bottom to a foot and half off. The more aggressive fish will chase your bait a few feet up the water column. Having a flasher makes it fun to watch those fish fly up and smack your lure. Glow red/pink, glow green, and gold are good lure colors to start with. Some days a dead stick approach is best, other days jigging brings the most fish up the holes. You can fish two lines, so one of each approach is usually the way to go.
Next winter we will have our own plowed road access!
