Repeat customers Jon Dwyer, Craig Reiner, Bill Johnson and Royce Sheilds came over for two days of fishing with one on Oahe and one on Sharpe. This group of Rapid City and former Pierre residents are another of my favorite repeat groups. The weather cooperated with two great days but the bite on Oahe even in better weather was tough. We did get 10 nice walleye fishing in around 20 to 30 fow on bouncer/crawler rigs but worked real hard to do that. These guys catch the fish when I get them on them but due to and abundance of bait in Oahe and bait that is suspending all over the lake putting limits in the boat on Oahe suddenly has got harder on some days. If you land on active fish they are nice ones and the bite is good. Catching them up from deeper water can be challenging. Lake Sharpe especially from Joe Creek to the dam is lots of numbers with many smaller walleye being caught in depths to 30 fow. You just have to keep the nicer fish to come in with a better over all avg. We fished with bouncer/crawlers/spinners but many presentations work. Minnows bouncer and pulling plugs or spinner fishing might be better on releasing unwanted smaller fish as they tend to not be deep hooked as much as crawlers plain hook rigs. Cutting hooks and leaving a little line is a must if you are going to give these little guys a chance at survival if they are deep hooked. Once again if catching number's is what you are looking for right now this area of Sharpe is a good choice. Oahe in my opinion is still the best choice for bigger average stringers however be prepared to have some days that produce slow spells and a lot of looking for active fish. Lots of drinking water along with fly/bug spray in your boat make for better trips. Weekends are still real busy on both lakes so be prepared to see plenty of other boats around if you can't do a week day trip.
