Title: Lee is now an outlaw
Post by: Lee Borgersen on May 05/02/16, 11:13:26 PM
Lee is now an outlaw. :doah:

After over 20 years I discovered that I'm guilty of being an outlaw. Today I went over to the local forest preserve. It's been raining most of the night and that means its crawler collecting time for me as usual as soon as the gates are open. My technique is a tad unusual and folks tend to look on wondering what the heck is this guy doing with that contraption. All the crawlers I collect is with this system I created. The best place to do my gathering is on the pavements on the road or parking areas.

So to cut to the chase here's me with about 100 crawlers in my contraption when I hear a car creeping up behind me. So I jump on to the curb to avoid getting run over. As I spun around to see who was behind me it was the cook county forest preserve patrol car. :police: He asked what are you doing  I was sure he was going to tell me not to walk along to the narrow road for safety purposes.

Instead he asked what is that weird contraption  you have there. So I showed him that it was my crawler collector. He then proceeded to politely ask if I was dumping off some worms? :doah: I stated no I'm collecting crawlers. That’s when he told me that I can't do that because it's illegal. "You can't remove anything from the forest preserve" I didn't argue with him and just stated that I wasn't aware of the rule pertaining to worms.

He then told me that I could keep what I already had. So I walked to the car and left. After all these years that was a new one on me. I knew that you can't remove timber or plants but crawlers? :banghead:

Now I have to look for another area after all those years! :doah:

It's interesting that a forest preserve officer would have any objection to your removing night crawlers from a that area.
A professor by the name of Lee Frelich  (University of Minnesota) claims that night crawlers are not a native species, and can destroy trees and other plants by eating their food supply.  :coffee:
His research is one of the many battle cries of the environmentalists, and night crawlers are not supposed to be dumped into any land in the BWCAW because of their "destructive ways,"  instead being dumped into the lake.  :bs:
With this said, the Ranger should have nominated you for some type of award for saving the park!!  :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader:

glenn57,
How can you suggest that about brother Lee?
He was in a dark area, wearing a head lamp, ski mask, binoculars around his neck, a Larry Flint T shirt, big clown shoes, and merely asked the Ranger if he had a big, fat, worm!!!  :coffee:
What would make anyone think he was some kind of a perv??   :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

The fake pride union sticker made me remember I put a Special Olympics Supporter sticker on my truck window last month and then forgot to send the check to them.  Talk about some guilt when I noticed it the other day.

Only George Constanza would do what I've done.

Well, it's almost that time of the year again. Do I let da law push me around or do I take the gamble and get caught by the same ranger as last year. If da same guy busts me this year I won't just get a verbal warning!

If you have no Idea what I'm talkin bout go to page one of this thread where da story starts :doah:

I would make some phone calls and talk to someone higher up about the nightcrawlers being an invasive species.  I saw a news thing on TV about that too a couple of years ago.  Maybe you could get the ball rolling on being able to do it at parks legally.

I just read about them on the DNR website.  Shows a forest befor and after worms.  After has half of the trees.

 :happy1:
I appreciate your interest and that all makes sense Butttttt .... This is cook (crook county IL.)  The old saying around here is you can't buck city hall! Also If I start inquiries about stupid laws and then get busted for still doing my collecting I'll get torched. This way I can still carry on with my worm collecting and just act like dough I didn't know. Also I was thinking that how can they bust you if your stopped while still in the forest preserve when stopped. They would have to catch you leaving outside the park with the forbidden fruit to have broken the law I reckon. I could also say I'm not removing these worms from the park. I'm using them for bait here in the pond. I'd need to carry a rod in the car for proof.

About 10 years ago at the seasons end I still had a half a flat of crawlers to get rid of. So, I dumped them on the front lawn. For the next 4 yrs. The grass on that exact spot always came in with a yellow tint. That had to be from those crawlers I dumped. I figure they destroyed the nutrient's in the soil.

Yep! That's why it's against MN regs. to dump worms on the ground.

Can you post the http: on that article here :happy1: I want to print that out!

www.dnr.state.mn.us › ... › Terrestrial Invasive Species › Invasive terrestrial animals  Here you go Lee.  Sounds like you have a workable theory on the worm thing.  Don't let me get you in trouble.

With you on my team I'm no longer worried. I may just go and hire so undocumented workers now and get this thing going big time. If you want in on this just send me a check :happy1:

Crawler harvesting in the wrong areas could be bad. To play it safe Lee put on one of them there a troubled person cleaning up the road way suits. Have borgie pretend she's in charge of your duty,  or wait that's every day. Nobody will question you thinking your doing the society some good, then again you are a hawks fan, they just might run your  :moon: over.. :rotflmao:

For the same reason that we have sanctuary cities. Even though the invaders (crawlers or people) can cause possible harm in the long run they have rights. It don't matter if they cause negative impacts, because they are entitled by right of birth. Special dispensation is to be considered under all circumstances if it makes sense or not! :banghead:

And that's the world we live in today. :doah:

I'd like to see this contraption you use for collecting the worms, and even better, I'd like to see you in that costume Greatoutdoors described. I also think you should do it again, eventually get caught, go to court, educate the court, tell them, "You can't handle the truth!" ala Jack Nickolson... and then become a celebrated folk hero.  The End.

All I can say Fawk is you’re an inspiration to me and the rest of the other young guys. After some of the well meaning support I've received from this thread, How could I not continue on with my mission despite the law.

I may be asking you to designee some new t-shirts regarding "Crawler Hunters". Be prepared for future orders by the 1,000's.

Hey Jack,

Fawk just recomended I use your famous tactics if I have to go to court. I would much rather you appear with me if that happens.

If I post your photo on MNO could you respond to my request with a quick Yes or No when I click on your face

               You Be The Judge

Ok sports fans, here's what went down today during my first of many hopefully crawler hunts. Rained last night with mild temps and light winds. Those are the conditions that prove to be the best for Lee to spring into action. After being poked and prodded to continue breaking the law by all my concerned MNO followers I felt emboldened. Therefore It behooved me to go for it no matter what da consequences'.

After gathering up all my custom equipment I headed out on my mission, not really knowing what I was in for. What consequences' were in store for me? All I knew was the boys at MNO were counting on me not to back down. I refused to give myself any negative self talk. About 9:00 am I fired up Borgies SUV an off I drove. When arriving at the entrance of the forest preserve I drove extra slow to see if crawlers were still on the roads surface. Yes! they were there just a waiting for me. I decided to drive to the farthest end of da woods kind of a stealth move I figured.

My plan was to be a short hit and run tactic to get a load a crawlers and head out successfully. Well, I got 125 crawlers. I thought maybe one more quick spot and call it a wrap. The next spot I gathered 100 more. Then the greed factor set in.... "This will be my last spot" says I. There I was wit only 25 crawlers at that point on spot #3 while working the parking area.

Bodda.... Bing..... Bodda... Bang.....Who comes cruising along the main rd. by da parking area but John Law! He was driving a white marked SUV. I turned my back to conceal my custom crawler rig. He kept going without recognizing what I was doing.  I figured he was headed to the dead end about 2 blocks down and had to turn around and come back this way. I flew and I mean flew into action. Opened the hatch and flung my equipment in da back spilling the last batch of crawlers on the carpet.

I pulled out of the parking area knowing he'd be back this way after the turn around dead end. I had to beat him to the exit and kept looking in my mirror. Just before I reached the exit there was a white SUV just sitting on the narrow road facing me and here I am speeding. As I slowed down with my chest pounding I figured the cop had radioed a backup to nail me with da goods.  As I got closer I didn't see a spot light on the white SUV and no markings. Here it was just some jerk texting in the road with his vehicle stopped.

          Many questions:
Next time I'll go earlier when da gate first opens!
Was that the same cop from last year?
Did he see what I was doing?
Was Lee rattled up for nothing?
Was it all worth it!
Will the boys at MNO be proud a me?
Do I have to clean Borgies carpet after da spill?

...wondering if there is a reward for identifying the culprit.

Took a ride to da woods between the long lasting rain clouds. "Forget about it!" Saw only a few crawlers here and there. The air temp was:
only 40 and that had a lot to do with the lack of crawlers.

One thing that you can always count on at the woods is more than a few strange men just sitting in their cars by themselves  :bonk: cough ....cough.... :doah:

                                    Today's Update!
4/16/17

      "A hunting We Will GO"

 :coffee: .....
Well the grounds have been extra soggy around here lately. I mixed up some bedding two days ago and filled my worm feeder shaker yesterday. So far I've got 2 flats of crawler fattening up in the bait fridge in da garage. I like to keep about 250 crawlers per flat sow's they have plenty a room ta roam. It rained steady last night so I figured I'd hit da forest preserve once again. To my surprise when I hit the outdoors crawlers were abundant all over da pavements. :happy1:

Looks like I could skip risking an outing to da forest preserve where my friends in :police: law enforcement like to roam. They are just seeking out those law breaking scum such as myself. Those that like to pillage and plunder the ever illusive night crawler population. Those that come out and show themselves during the spring rains. Ok...... OK! stop picking on da law Lee! :taz:  I decided to go over the empty parking lot at the junior high. The lot was surrounded by grass and that's the spot on the spot type area I prefer.

  .....
I was convinced that this was the time for selective harvest. No more pickin up small ones and feeding dem till they grow up.  10 percent were the type & the size I'm lookin fur. Forget choosing the ones with the pale color. Just pick those with the dark brown noses. Those are the more mature ones that will grow into super crawlers if fed properly. Any who... I wound up wit another 250 to add to my collection.

For me collecting crawlers is like picking up dimes off the pavement.

sleazy-422.gif I'll bet if you saw dimes all over the pavement You'd be picken um up too!

Tight Lines Guys! :fishing:

It is wit great sorrow that I must inform my followers of the death of 250.

Unfortunately it seems that along with the caption stating "Lee Is An Outlaw" I can now add
"Murderer!"

 :coffee: ...
Upon recent inspection of crawler flat #1 I noticed that several crawlers were laying on the surface of the bedding. That's not unusual except they were looking peaked. Me no like when I see that sign. Therefore they needed to be removed from da colony. I figured I'd wait 48 hrs. and give another peak. The plague had spread like wild fire and decimated da whole population in dat  one flat.

This morning I dumped da whole flat behind da shed. :pouty:  It was a quiet ceremony. No others to morn in my time of despair. Now why should I feel guilty? Because it was all my fault!  :bonk:

You see that was da first pick of da season. Actually They came from da first heist of da season when I got busted by da :police: park ranger. I musta been a tad rattled dat day and put dem in da garage fridge without checking da temp setting. Two days later I noticed da bedding had some ice crystals on it. Dat's what I get for not having my glasses wit me den! The crawlers under da bedding looked fine. I'm sure now dat my error came back to kick me in da :moon: . The crawlers were negatively impacted from day one but bravely struggled to overcome my error. However the internal damage was irreversible.

Why do I share this information on a public forum. Because I hope that others could learn from the errors of me ways. Also because my own family don't even give a crap. :taz:

I just want to lead my MNO family down the path of raucousness.

:happy1:  The next time I get busted. :police:

The next time I get busted by (John Law) I'll have this info to back up my quest for crawlers.

Another study finds earthworms hurting maple trees in Minnesota forests.

By John Myers on Aug 15, 2017 at 9:08 p.m.

 :coffee: ......
DULUTH, Minn.—Invasive earthworms from Europe that came over with early settlers and have been moving across North America ever since are causing sugar maple trees to decline in northern Minnesota forests.

That was the conclusion of a research project published in the latest issue of the journal Biological Invasions — the second major project in as many years pointing to earthworms as the culprit in northern Minnesota forest problems.

Scientists in the latest study, led by Michigan Technological University biologist Tara Bal, looked at plots of maples in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Northeastern Minnesota's Superior National Forest and northern Wisconsin, and found maple trees experiencing "dieback" due to disturbances on the forest floor.

That disturbance was worms eating the leaves.

Dieback is when top branches that should be full of leaves instead had bare spots. That's a sign of tree decline, where trees stop growing or die. In some areas, timber companies said maples were dying and becoming worthless even before they could be harvested.

From 2009 to 2012, Bal made annual visits to the same sites to measure what was happening.

"We went into this not knowing what was causing it, thinking it could be (forest) management or insects or something else," Bal told the News Tribune. "But going out to over 120 sites over several years, you could see it was the worms and the lack of duff. We didn't see any older maple leaves because they're the leaves worms like to eat first."

That invasive earthworms are a problem isn't new. Scientists in northern Minnesota have been reporting issues for years. But the maple situation appears to be worse than others.

"It's not necessarily a death knell for maples. You can have trees and worms," Bal said. "But when you have worms and then you add on a drought or high temperatures or heavy deer browsing, they are combining to impact maples pretty severely. It's changing the forest out there."

Many people mistakenly believe that brown earthworms, including angleworms and night crawlers, are native. But there are no native earthworms in North America; they all were taken out during the last ice age. The only native worms are the whitish, skinny worms you might find under rocks. North American forests developed over the past 10,000 years without earthworms.

Last September a study published in journal Global Change Biology found that the invasive earthworms are reducing species diversity, changing the makeup of forests wherever the worms are prevalent. That study included research by more than two dozen scientists, including Lee Frelich, director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Forest Ecology and an expert on mortheastern Minnesota forests.

Frelich said the non-native worms consume the duff — the decaying leaves on the forest floor — as they eat their way across the continent's forests. The worms alter the physical and chemical properties of soils, changing the pH, nutrient and water cycles and disrupting symbiotic relationships between soil fungi and tree roots.

The recent studies back past findings by UMD professor Cindy Hale that found the worms' impact especially intrusive on hardwood forests. They seem to have less impact on evergreen species, probably because needles are more acidic and less tasty to the worms.

As worms eat the leaves on the forest floor, big trees survive, but many young seedlings perish, along with many ferns and wildflowers. That changes what kind of trees are in a forest, scientists say.

Scientists have been studying night crawlers on a peninsula at Leech Lake for years and determined that worms were first introduced in the 1950s, probably as they became popular for fishing bait. Now, there are 30,000 to 100,000 night crawlers per acre in that area.

In some parts of southern Minnesota, with better soils, there are up to 200,000 night crawlers per acre. And that doesn't include angleworms, which can be as dense as 400,000 per acre — all of them digesting plant material on the forest floor.

Bal and others say anyone who goes into the forest should make sure they are not releasing night crawlers into the woods because there still are some areas not impacted by invasive worms.

For more information on foreign earthworms and their impact on forests, go to greatlakeswormwatch.org.

Note: I will keep a copy of this in my car to show John Law if he throws da cuffs on me! :police:

                  Signed,
                        Da nightcrawler bandit

       First Hunt a da season.

Well it's about time according to da calendar ta get ready to get ready. Problem is noboby told Mother Nature it's bout time. I mixed me up a large batch a Nightcrawler bedding in anticipation a da huge crawler deluge during my first Spring crawler hunt.

Took a early morning run to da happy hunting grounds (local woods) after da early am rain. Upon arrival I discovered all da gates were closed. Seems dat Cook county had decided ta cut some labor costs. :doah:

Switched over to plan "B" area and found dat da weather is not helping my cause. Were still bout a week or more behind schedule weather wise. Very few crawlers out and about dis morning and da size wasn't wort da effort. :banghead:

As fur now it's just a waiting game (can ya hear me mudder nature?)

First 2018 Attempt Dis Morning! :happy1:

5/3/18

 :coffee: ......
After a long drought dis Spring we were blessed wit some major elictical storms all night. Da rain was gusshin down da streets all night. Also I was lookin forward to some major crawler huntin.
Managed ta get over to da Jr High parkin lot early before da woods were opened. Seems dat da lot was repaved since last year. Therefore crawler picken was poor (only some little dinkers) Not interested in dem little guys. :whistling:

  ...
As soon as da gate was opened at da forrest preserve I was ready fur better action. Da largest percentage of dem crawlers were still to small fur picken. I did wind up wit 12 dozen dat were wert keepin. Could a got more a da small guys but it takes to long ta grow um. :bonk:

 :doah: ...
I did get a small rush dare fur a minute when spotted a vehicle wit da roof bar lights flashin. Since I've become paranoid about bein a bandit it's not as relaxing as in da past. Fortunately It looked like da county maintenance truck checkin fur storm damage.
Well,  huntin should improve wit a few more heavy rains and dat will help da crawler sizes to. Gots ta go out to da garage fridge ta see if tem crawlers have managed ta burrow down in da bedding yet!  :pouty:

Excellent song! Needs some good backbeat and guitar riffs, though.... :rocker; Do you have a grandson named Tommy? Jus' wonderin'......

Grandpa watched Tommy pull a worm out of the ground and told him that he would give him 10 bucks if he could put it back in.

Tommy left for a bit and said "Ok Grandpa, watch this". Tommy then pushed the worm right back down in the hole.

The Grandpa got out the 10 dollars and gave it to Tommy.

Tommy said "Grandpa I can't keep this because I cheated. I sprayed the worm with hair spray. That's why I was able to do that."

Grandpa said "No, you keep it."

The next morning at breakfast Grandpa walked up to Tommy and gave him another 10 bucks.

Tommy said "No Grandpa. You already paid me."

Grandpa replied "That money was from Grandma."

    Well, It's about time!

 :coffee: .....
So far dis spring da crawler hunts have been less den spectacular. Been waitin fur da big rain storms. Finally day started but da crawlers been on strike. :mad1: Only da small guys showin up.

  ...
Dat all changed ta-day wit da air temps in da 60's. We've had rain storms a plenty but da air temps have been in da upper 40's in da mornin. Not conducive to good crawler huntin. :angry2:

Got ta da forrest preserve bout 6:15 am dis mornin.  I was able ta collect 250 med/large crawlers. Wit my tender love and care day should all become stronger and larger in a week er so!

Tell ya what. I'll go true 17 ta 20 doz crawlers per trip wit 3 clients in da boat. Dat's why I try ta collect as many as I can when I can. Da lake I guide on is loaded wit stinkin :mad1: rock bass along wit a healthy smallie/large mouth pop. :happy1:

Well da anticipation was to much fur me ta-day. Therefore wit da rain lightly commin down all night and dis mornin I knew better butt..... I decided ta take a ride over ta Da Crook County forest preserve just ta check out da conditions. Didn't bring none a my crawler collector equipment. Da one negative I discovered was dat da Crook County Road gang had left a mess! :doah:

 :coffee: .....
Seems dat day had filled tons of potholes wit asphalt wit out packin it down. So of course da park roads were a mess wit all dat loose asphalt spread all over da park roads! Dis is definitely not inviting to da worms. Dem critters always leave da grassy areas when it storms. Dat's what I count on. Dis way I can gather dem right on da pavements.
Unfortunately dem brown beauties don't like da pavements when der full of gravel.
Maybe when da big storms show up all da gravel will wash down in-ta da sewer system.

"Meanwhile Back At Da Ranch" I mixed a big batch of worm bedding in anticipation of da big rains combined wit warmer wedder.

Almost Forgot...... :bonk:
I spotted NO! crawlers on today's venture just as I expected. :doofus:

        Nice haul made dis mornin.

 :coffee: ..
Last night was da wedder I've been waitin fur. Heavy storms, lightnin, and warmer temps. All dat stuff combined equals a crawler pickers dream. So, I hit da woods early dis mornin. Crawlers were all over da pavements. Da best part was dat day were startin ta grow larger den da last few trips I made dis spring. :happy1:

  ...
I gathered up 260 crawlers being careful not ta cultivate dem smaller ones. Da crazy part is dat I collected all dem crawlers wit-out ever havin ta touch one or even bend over. Bout 6 years I created my crawler picker upper system and it works like a charm. When it comes ta building and repairing tings I'm not very skilled at dat stuff. However I have a tallent for makin something out a junk. :pouty:

  ...
I'd explain what it looks like in da next week or so when my son stops buy. I'll have him take a few photos so I kin show ya's after he transfurs da photos ta me. Two days ago an (old fisherman) friend stopped by and I showed um how it works. He couldn't believe it and said he never saw anything like it before. :doah:

Right now I'm runnin out of space in da garage fridge ( it's where I keep my flats of crawlers.)
:doofus:

 :happy1: ...
Good luck dis weekend on opener guys. Hey! and don't furget yer secret designated item fur yer contest photos. :bonk: No designated Item = NO POINTS!

Study cites impact of region’s worst invasive: earthworms

Spread of non-native worms is causing severe effects to forest soils, worsening drought and water quality.

 :reporter; Posted October 13

  :coffee: ......
Perhaps the most obvious change is the almost total elimination of the deep duff layer that used to be commonplace in Minnesota forests.”

 ......
REGIONAL— Concern about invasive species is widespread these days, and with good reason. Invasive organisms, from ash borers to zebra mussels, can have significant consequences for both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Yet one of the most harmful and pervasive of the invasive species lives all around most of us, affecting the ground on which we walk, the trees that grow around us, and even the quality of the water in our lakes. And, in most cases, we don’t even think ofthem as invasive species or recognize the dramatic changes they’ve brought to the region.

Earthworms, angleworms, or night crawlers may seem like part of the natural environment here, given that in most parts of northern Minnesota, these invasive worms are now found almost everywhere. :bonk: But that wasn’t always the case. The spread of these invasiveworms has happened gradually over the past century, facilitated mostly as worms became popular fishing bait. The invasion has spread from hot spots around popular fishing lakes to eventually encompass most of northern Minnesota. :doah:

Lee Frelich has reason to know about the impact of invasive earthworms. He’s a professor of forest ecology at the University of Minnesota and the lead author of a recently published article in the journal, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, that documentsthe extent to which the spread of non-native earthworms is fundamentally altering northern forests. :pouty:

  .....
According to the study, European earthworms now inhabit more than 80 percent of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and the presence of these invasive worms is creating a cascade of impacts, from increasing the susceptibility of forests to drought to creatingexcessive runoff to diminishing water quality in lakes and streams.

Perhaps the most obvious change, says Frelich, is the almost total elimination of the deep duff layer that used to be commonplace in Minnesota forests. That’s the result of aggressive feeding by earthworms, which consume and digest this kind of organic matter.According to Frelich, prior to the introduction of non-native earthworms, the leaf litter that covered the ground in northern Minnesota’s forests was often 6-7 inches thick, representing the accumulation of as much as 20 years’ worth of organic material.

Frelich, who has studied areas that invasive worms have yet to reach, said the difference between the forest floor in infested and un-infested areas is dramatic. Where earthworms still are absent or rare, the ground is spongy. “It’s literally like walkingon a memory foam mattress,” he said.

That layer of duff plays a significant role in many aspects of the forest ecosystem, according to Frelich. “The duff provides a lot of insulation, which means midsummer soil temperatures don’t get as warm. It also helps to retain moisture, like mulch inyour garden.” :happy1:

The loss of forest floor duff results in warmer soil temperatures and less retention of moisture, which makes forest soils more subject to drought. :doah: Frelich said the arrival of worms in any given location can usually be determined through tree core samples, which soon begin to indicate more drought stress. Frelich said he suspects, but has not yet confirmed, that the arrival of invasive earthworms was the primary cause of the massive birch die-off on the North Shore in the past 15-20 years, by making soils therewarmer and more subject to drying. :moon:

The loss of duff can also impact water quality. According to Frelich, the duff layer has traditionally helped filter rain and snowmelt and slow runoff. Once the duff is gone, the soil becomes harder and more subject to heavy runoff. “The other thing thathappens is there is more erosion of the soil and more leaching of important nutrients,” said Frelich. That includes both nitrogen compounds and phosphorus, which can quickly impact water quality by increasing the growth of unwanted algae. “Once the worms coveran entire watershed, it’s been shown it will impact water quality. And those impacts will worsen over time,” said Frelich.

And as nutrients in the soil are leached into nearby waterways, the availability of nutrients to plants in the forest is diminished, slowing the growth of many forest plants, including trees like the sugar maple by as much as 30 percent.

The duff also provided a hospitable seed bed for many tree species, like birch, sugar maple, or balsam fir, which appear to be declining in many locations as they’re replaced by species like red maple and white pine, which do better on hard, mineral soilsthan other species. The spread of red maple into northeastern Minnesota forests has been one of the most dramatic effects of the spread of invasive earthworms.

The disappearance of the duff has also affected the type of wildflowers found in northern Minnesota forests. According to Frelich, once-common forest wildflowers, like trilliums, are being replaced by sedges and grasses, which do better on the hard, duff-lesssoil now found on forest floors across most of northern Minnesota. :doah:

That’s why Frelich’s recent journal article refers to a “cascade” of effects from the introduction of invasive earthworms. “When you change the structure of the soil over whole landscapes, it will change ecosystem function in a lot of ways,” said Frelich. “It just cascades from one organism to the other.”

Given the widespread distribution of earthworms, the change to Minnesota’s environment is probably a permanent fixture, notes Frelich. Any effort to rid the soil of earthworms would likely impact other soil fauna, he said, causing even greater disruptionto the environment.

First chance ta get out early today!  Kin ya say: "heavy all night rains" = night crawlers

  ......
Managed ta scrounge up 265 decent crawlers after all da rain kept on & on & on!

 :coffee: ....
So, as I was busy collecting dem brown beauties I noticed a car pull in and park next ta mine at da woods. I was quite a distance away from him. He opened his hatch and took out his fishin stuff. He took off towards da path ta da lake. When I was ready ta pack it in fur da mornin I headed back ta da car. His car was parked next ta me. I noticed da sound of an engine run-in. It weren’t mine and den I saw da fisherman's car wipers moving. Sure enough his car was left running.  :doah:

 :bonk: ....
Dis guy was so excided ta walk out to da dam ta fish, he forgot his car was still run-in. He was nowhere in sight. I figured I'd follow da path he took and find him. Little did I know how far it was ta da dam. :banghead: I walk wit a limp and have a bad knee. :violin:

After goin farther den I should have a young jogger was head-in  towards me. :happy1: I flagged um down ad told um dat I won't make it ta da dam ta tell dis guy. I asked if he could go back about a half a block and tell da guy his silver suv was still run-in? Da young jogger said dat da guy probably knows his silver suv is running. Den he just started run-in away! (tanks fur Nitin :moon:   hole) Once I reached da fishin area I told 2 fishin guys what happened and day sad dell head down along dam ta tell dis guy bout his SUV. :happy1:

I was kickin myself in da  :moon:  fur even caring bout da whole ting. Den I had ta walk all da way back ta my vehicle. Da best part was dat as I finished gettin all my crawlers a park ranger drove past me as I was heading out of da forest preserve in my SUV wit da mudder load of crawlers. :sleazy:

Beware of jumping worms in soil, gardening mulch :tut:

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is cautioning gardeners and anglers to be on the lookout for invasive jumping worms. These destructive worms can quickly degrade soils and damage garden plants and lawns.

Jumping worms are a relatively new invasive species in Minnesota and they are a threat to gardens and forests, said Laura Van Riper, DNR terrestrial invasive species coordinator. They make rich soil more like coffee grounds. They eat plant roots, damaging garden plants and sod.

Jumping worms are a type of earthworm that looks similar to other common earthworms such as nightcrawlers. They are called jumping worms because they wiggle intensely when disturbed and sometimes appear to be jumping. Native to Asia, jumping worms have been confirmed in limited areas of Minnesota since 2006, mainly in the Twin Cities and western suburbs and in Rochester. It's believed that they were spread throughout North America by people moving potted plants, soil, compost, mulch and fishing bait.

Jumping worms cannot be legally introduced into the environment in Minnesota and are also a poor choice for bait because they break into segments when handled.

The good news is, jumping worms are not well established in Minnesota and there are actions people can take to prevent their spread. We need gardeners and anglers to be vigilant and to contact the DNR when they think theyve found jumping worms, Van Riper said.

 :popcorn:Other steps that help:

Don't buy worms advertised as jumping worms, snake worms,Alabama jumpers or crazy worms for any purpose.
Anglers should dispose of any unwanted bait worms in the trash.
Gardeners should inspect incoming mulch or plants for jumping worms and if swapping plants with friends, wash off the soil and share the plants as bare root plants.
Recreationists should brush the mud off their boots and equipment.
To help Minnesotans identify and report jumping worms, the DNR has produced two short videos. One video features Dr. Lee Frelich, director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology, talking about how jumping worms are sometimes found in garden soils and packaged garden mulch products. Another video focuses on why jumping worms should not be purchased or used for fishing bait.

If people think they've found jumping worms, they should take high resolution photos showing the ring around the worms body in relation to its head and report jumping earthworms using www.eddmaps.org, or contact the DNR Information Center at 888-646-6367 or info.dnr@state.mn.us.

The videos and more information about jumping worms and other terrestrial invasive species are available on the DNR website.

I am very firmiliar wit da whole story :happy1:

False accusations started by the antis. La Tourell had a netting permit and was on da American side of da boarder. Environmentalists are a powerful group and have been trying fur years to get motors kicked out of the BWCA. Therefore any thing they can do to disrupt outfitters and get Prairie Portage shut down. They have been fighting fur years to disrupt usage by boaters and will stop at nothing!

I could go on and on with dis topic and back-up info..........However it don't pay ta argue and argue with dem dat aren't familiar wit da whole picture!

No arrests and No court cases have occurred....since the original trumped up accusations were assumed!   :doah:

So far a lot of false accusations by dem dat are tryin underhanded tactics!   Environmentalists wit an agenda, clout, and friends in high places.

So the charges weren't actually filed?    And I looked through the laws and if they were using seines to catch ciscoes to sell, I don't see where that is permitted.

But I'm keeping an open mind.    I guess we will see when and if there is an actual trial ore plea bargain.

But this all being a plot to shut down prairie portage seems like a stretch.

:reporter; ...EDITORIAL: Eight years of wasted government spending over catching minnows :doah:

Submitted by admin1 on Fri, 09/18/2020 - 16:04

If you’re looking for wasteful government spending, check out the story of the feds spending eight years to charge three Ely people from crossing an invisible line to harvest minnows.
In a case that dates back to 2012 and where one of the key figures has since passed away, the feds charged Bob LaTourell Jr. and his twin sisters Mindy and Missy with violating an act that was passed 120 years ago.

The only good thing to come out of this debacle is that our old friend Jim Maki was an innocent man - something he would have gladly told you if he was still here today.
What is missing from this case is the evidence. There were 1,300 dozen ciscoes (that’s 15,600 minnows by our math) that were confiscated in a raid at the Great Outdoors bait shop.

Despite the best efforts of Ely’s Jeff Anderson, who worked for Congressman Rick Nolan at the time, the ciscoes were never returned. All of this headache and heartache over minnows. :bonk:

How do you feel about those folks coming across the invisible line down south to get jobs?
Lacey act 120 years old?   So?  Constitution is older than that.   You want to ignore that too?

Let's have the freaking trial and get it over with.   Guilty or Innocent...  Might need to move it someplace to get a decent jury.

Decent discussion?    Did the guy take the ciscoes legally?   Did he go into Canada to get them?  How far?   50 feet or half a mile?   How did he catch them?   Was his method legal in the area that he used it?

I am open minded about this case but it sure has the "locals don't have to follow the law and obey the rules" smell around it.   I would be totally happy if it turns out he was obeying the laws and the DNR was over reaching, but I have also heard excuses before.

So, do you know how he got  those ciscoes, and where?    How do you know?   Taking his word?

This smells like the Square hook case near Bema where the DNR spent thousand of dollars, ate steak and prime rib, shrimp every night for months.  They had all of the 3 real nice small cabins rented for months if not a year or two so we couldn't rent the cabins when we wanted too even if the DNR agents that rented them were not there.  They kept them reserved.  From what I remember a few tickets were issued for selling fish without a license and no tickets to this resort. Huge boondoggle.

Well, I've decided to take a risk once again dis year! Despite my unfortunate past run-ins wit da forest preserve ( "Barney Fife" )  Law officers! :police:
Last year was an absolute flop! It was da driest spring I've ever encountered. Dis year tanks ta Mudder Nature we've had some decent rain showers. I've been out on da hunt twice so far. Da first trip I managed 85 crawlers until da wedder changed ta rain mixed wit snow. Now da second time out was after da heavy rain during da night. So far I got me a total of tree hundred crawlers.

Look-in forward ta da next rain storm. I wish day would open da gates earlier in da morning before dem worms leave da pavements. Da best part of my worm collecting is dat I NEVER even have ta bend over even once to pick up dem worms. Wit da contraption dat I invented I never have bend or even touch any of da worms I gather. I got's me a bum back so dis is fast and simple.
