not so sure yet, but unless things change i might be done fishing this winter............sure would like to head north again before ice out though. :pouty:

man i cant belive how much the river opened up today from yesterday. the winter landings really got beat up in that time. i also cant believe there was a vehicle out there yet. the river must of doubled open water since yesterday. also yesterday there were 4 vehicles out on the ice, today all but the one was parked on shore.

took a cruise around the chain. long didn't have much activity. browns lake did,  a good bunch of vehicles scattered on the ice on the whole chain. houses scattered all over.

Post by: glenn57 on January 01/19/19, 06:01:42 PM
went for a drive today. grand lake by Rockville had lotz of houses and vehicles out on the ice.

same with the chain, I didn't go out past long, vehicles all out and about. no one was out by the meth hole but looked like 2 were headed that way. lot of wheel houses out on cedar island. where they where they did some damage to the catfish last year.

stay clear of the main river one should be good, as I say that though vehicles were crossing the river on the summer access to get over to becker lake!!!!!!!

took a drive around the chain. not a lot of activity out. south end of long is pretty ghost town like. not usually like that. most activity is on the north end by an island out from cozy corners. a few around the meth hole but not like usual. scattered all over, like that also on cedar island.

HSO is having a catfish party out there march 2, since I still has a couple MNO bumper stickers on my truck topper, think i'll go visit and fish awhile before I go to the game feed.

checked out the horseshoe chain from the road today. horseshoe looked as rough as a plowed field. road wasn't looking very driveable either although there was some type of small blazer type vehicle out there. there where only 2 houses  left on the lake, 1 on cedar island, 1 on horseshoe. rod out on cedar island looked pretty good and well plowed out for as far as I could see.

bored!!!!!!! :doofus: and needed to hit the grocery store. they sure were busy. as long as I was out I took a quick cruise down past the chain. there were 3 vehicles in the channel on schnieder lake and 3 vehicles out on cedar island. that's it. horseshoe was abandon. I didn't go out past long lake.
Title: Re: horseshoe chain
Post by: glenn57 on March 03/17/19, 05:57:47 PM
looks like the sauk river is starting to open up. the creek going into Schneider lake is open and starting to open up going into the lake. there were 2 people out in the channel and they walked.

horseshoe itself was barren of any fishermen and there were 6 vehicles parked on shore on cedar island. a few on browns lake a few coming off long lake. I heard through the grapevine that becker lake is freezing out. the lakes are layered from what I've been told, once you get through the crust you hit water, then the drilling bogs down with all the water.

holy sheep dip did the river ever open up and water levels rise in the last 24 hours on the chain. it looks to me getting on most of the chain is pretty much all done. low spots on hwy 22 have water almost up on the road.

there was a sheriffs deputy and one of cold springs finest on the old railroad bridge in town surveying things, looks like the deputy had some gadget in his hand???????? water was really flowing over that dam!!!!!!!
Title: Re: horseshoe chain
Post by: glenn57 on March 03/31/19, 04:32:31 PM
there's a lot of open water now on the chain, wherever there's current and a few shallow bays. I stopped at a creek and the channel that goes from long lake to horseshoe, didn't see any pike. must not be spawn time just yet.

there is a whole lot of open water on the chain. there is still ice on cedar island and ice on horseshoe where the winter access is. there was a few rigs yesterday at the hwy 22 river access!

well since my previous informative post got zapped i'll post it again!!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I had heard that no parking signs were posted along the winter access. since I was totally bored I took a scenic drive around the chain. and it is posted, to the hilt. there were however vehicles parked just beyond the signs. this is going to create very dangerous safety issues if you do not know that system well. sure enough people are using the river access and heading over to the chain. DUMB..DUMB...DUMB. theres a lot of current there and that meth hole is out there. its really dangerous where the river hits the lake too!!!

anyway there were quite a few people out. on Schneider, by the golf course, there were people in the channel, and that's a given, there where 2 wheelhouses around the corner by the resort with wheelers by them. a few on the chain scattered all over. on the south end of long lake there was a good amount out fishing and a few on browns lake. grand lake was full of people.

rumor has it that a 4 wheeler with a trailer went through on horseshoe. i new this was coming with the no parking signs along the winter access on hwy 22. people are using the summer access on the river and going over to horseshoe to fish them catfish. along with the weather the ice is deteriating and the current is picking up making dangerous conditions not  only on the river , but where the  lake and river meet.    :tut: :pouty: :pouty:

got bored to took a drive around the chain. lot of water on top of the ice, but its not seeping in so one would think the ice is still pretty good...…..for now. there was 1 truck out on browns lake, anyone else out was by wheeler or foot. there were not a lot of people out.

the 3 bridges I crossed, the river were open. open water by the camp woody bridge that goes from horseshoe to long.

got bored, took a drive around the chain. I seen 2 people out on schneider lake. the culvert/creek area was open water for a ways out on the lake. these guys were plenty far away.

the river system is pretty much wide open except for west of the cty rd 49 bridge. that's the road that goes behind the blue heron. there was ice yet west of the bridge out a ways. I seen one guy out on cedar island but the ice is pulling away from shore. I heard yesterday the hwy 22 river acess was open all the way out to the meth hole, so with the wind yesterday I fully expected to see ice piled up along the shore in that area but it wasn't.

the channel between horseshoe and long wasw ide open to.

Took  cruise around the horseshoe chain. Boat landings are busy, bunch fishing from shore in select areas. Fair amount of activity at resorts and campgrounds.

Yesterday coming home from the the Generals place the landing on HWY 55 to koronis had 5 boat's and about 10 people fishing from shore. Man where there done rollers out on the main lake of koronis.

todays st cloud times had an article with the headlines regarding fish limit changes on 9 local area lakes. the DNR is looking to reduce sunfish limits on these lakes from 20 to 10.

it turns out the lakes essentially make up the lakes of the horseshoe chain by richmond.

just an opinion but there wasnt much said about the panfish population in that chain until a couple years after they introduced the damn catfish in that system. :doah:

From what I've read that is the main strategy of the QBI(Quality Bluegill Iniative) that they're implementing all over the state. Any lakes that they think are capable of growing big gills they would like to reduce the limits on if it doesn't create a public uproar. Your buddy ;), Weitzel is the lead man, the DNR & SLPOA have been asking for input from people on the lake for over a year now. Heard talk of them tryin to make some lakes even havin 5  :fish2: limits on Crappie, with slots too. Some states, mostly out east, have been doing this for quite a few years now with good results.

i go to LSF occasional dew2 is there now and then he said some of the lakes out that way are going the same direction. the one thing i've seen was if the DNR has this in there sites, they can have all the public input there is, its still gonna happen.

i'm just glad there doing individual lakes, not like the pike regulations now. before our lake froze out the last 2 years we had a pile of sunfish in that lake. in my opinion reducing the limit would of been not a good idea. i felt they needed to come out. in the times i was at the cabin i didnt ever see many people target sunfish, a few but not many.

at first i thought the pike regulation was really stupid, but looking at lake finder and the gill and net surveys i seen alot of small pike in there results. i'm beginning to believe the regulation might do some good. but frankly i dont know many people that go out at specifically target little snot rockets. our family does because we like pickled fish, so do the people i share them with.  :nerd: and it takes all 10 or 20 fillets to make 5 qts of pickled fish too!!

I pulled another nice nord, 27-28", out of our bay chasin Crappies again this fall. Can't remember exaclty how long but do remember that I figured it was ~ 5.5#'s. Could've kept it but didn't, it wasn't hooked bad & those are pretty rare on Sand. Gotta be close to 10 years with the special regs on our lake & I have to agree, I believe it has helped. It's gotten so I don't like to clean 'em if it isn't 18-21.5"

on my way up to see mom i took a quick drive around the horseshoe chain. schnieder was locked up. there was 1 person checking the ice on the access on long lake across from the browns lake access. looked like he had gone out about 40 yards but was closer to the landing when i seen him.

browns lake had open water, there where about 20 swans out there, otherwise the ice looked to be thin and virgin as in noone ese checked the ice. smooth as glass. i was surprised as the meth hole appeared to be froze as well as the river access on hwy 22. but no way saf.

cause datz where we all go to get are meth!!!!!  :mooning: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

seriously though, from what i remember its about 30 plus feet of water but there is a small pocket there that emits methane gas from the bottom of the lake that keeps the ice really thin in a small area. when it got as cold as it did it forms a thin layer of ice.

back in the days of livingas a kid at home a local businessman was out on a lake with one on those old style 6 wheel contraptions, ran into that and drowned. pretty much how they found it. a group of local snowmobilers used to go mark the area to keep away until all this liability crap came into play so its no longer marked.  it seems to be a popular place to fish catfish. been in the area once, happened to run into GT there, but there is plenty of other places to fish on the chain so i  avoid it.

momma insisted we go have brunch today, so that meant driving by the horseshoe chain. that ice is starting to look dark. there were a few people out  from the access on eden lake. the horseshoe chain was dead, there were 4 trucks out on the ice on cedar island but just where the lake opens up, and 1 car out on long with a few wheelers.

she also said she seen an facebook that cold spring will soon be getting a Kwik Trip. never in a million years with the politics in this town did i ever imagine that happening.

not really,  it's a small  bay that actually butts up to a road.used to be a good first ice out pan fish spot. No rocks on that shoreline.
