Anyone ever try one these? Picked one up a couple of weeks ago, sounds like one can do quite a bit with it. This time around I'm letting the rib eyes sit for a day soaking up some salt then they'll hit the grill without the block. :happy1:

 ???????????
-
never heard of it?????
-
My brother cooks his steak on a salt block at times. You heat it up on the oven then put it on a mat on the table and cook the steak right on the table. He said it works great. Would be kind of fun to do that.
-
Never heard of it, but I just googled it and it looks pretty cool.
I don't put much faith in a salt block lamp's effectiveness at sucking the negative energy out of my environment, but they can cook an extra tasty ribeye!
-
With my luck, it'd cook my tabletop.
-
when I goggled it they showed cooking on it in the grill with shrimp, did not see a steak....

Cookin' on a salt block....learned something new today. Were'd ya come up with dis one, boober?
-
I had the same reaction as you did reb, when a dude at work said he had a big expensive rib steak sitting on a block for a few days until the fat started melting????? Then I looked it up. But this will be an experiment I have 2 on it and one will be grilled without it. Not cooking on it this time but with these things being able to handle 500 degrees I might next time..
-
where did you get the block???

Make sure we get the full report today, boober!
-
Well here's my take so far. DON'T LISTEN TO A CO WORKER ON LETTING DEAD COW SIT ON THE BLOCK! Super salty, we faught over the piece that didn't. Seared then put off to the side.

-
Had pasta salad on the side.

so I'm thinking you are saying not to buy the salt???!!!!!
I will still check the store next time I'm by there....
-
Buy it, try it, just DON"T LEAVE YER MEAT on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :doah:
-
so you are confused too!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
just cook on it then???????????
-
NO I'M NOT!!!!! and to answer yer question,
YES! :doah:
-
I can only say I will look into it, salt is not big in my book, so settle down big feller!!!
-
Can ya hear me now? :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: Don't think I'd really care to try it...the ol' grill works fine for me. I'm just not really sure how I'd use it, but I'm sure there's lots more to it than I know about.
-
I most likely would not buy it either!!!!!
-
It's like anything else, you have to get to know how to use it. I'll try heating it and cooking on it next...live and learn they say. And yes reb, remi always gets a taste :happy1:
-
Curious to see how you like cooking on it. My brother said their steak turned out great when they did it on the table. They must really hold the heat to do that.
-
Did you tell us how much it cost? Are there different sizes?
-
I looked into it and there was lots of sizes and prices, just got to figure which one you want is all....
-
This one is 8×8 and bout 30 bucks. Since we have it I'm just gonna hafta keep trying different things.
-
I watched one person doing shrimp on it, I think that would be good...
-
I bet veggies strips, like peppers and onions, with that shrimp, would be good.....hmmmm...how about a shish kabob on it?
-
Well, thought I would try it cabin style on burglars. Really tasty, you could taste a hint of salt, the good thing is it didn't matter on the wind taking the heat away once the block was heated it didn't matter, but I didn't get the smoke / flame heated burger over wood. They cooked really fast probably half the time with out it over wood. So far so good cooking on it. :happy1:

Can ya keep it warm? I'm having burghamblers tomorrow nite...bet that block would give a nice slightly crisp sear to the burglars.... and some strips o' bacon...

ok still not sold on it yet...
-
Me either!
-
You don't cook Glenn so that doesn't surprise me. :mooning: I'm not exactly sold yet myself but it's a trial thing. Ya never know, I might melt this thing down and put in salt shakers..
-
Hey boober, I didn't build this body by not cooking! :moon: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
-
Ya I know, body by Coors not so light!! :moon: :moon: :moon:

Well there is a pork chop in each can!

Heck, I'm halfway sold on it!! Of course, some of us love to cook in other ways besides a Suzy-Homemaker oven or outta a can, right boober? :rotflmao:

I suppose you are going to cook in water next!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :happy1:
-
Just as soon as he finds a recipe on how to boil water! :azn:
-
Every thing has a purpose as far as a cooking tool. I do use the pink H salt but haven't seen this block. Looked over the whole thread and I think it's best to cook the meat on the block over direct heat as far as steaks and shrimp. Don't know until you try. I think that putting meat on the block and letting it sit for hours would be the same as a dry brine. The meat soaks in the salt just as if you used a dry brine. good luck.
-
Like I mentioned earlier and I have seen it on some Food Shows at expensive steak houses, they heated it up and then cooked the meat in front of you right at the table on the salt block. Must really retain the heat.
-
kinda like a pizza stone!
-
Interesting. I just looked at the specific heat. Salt is 0.21 units per weight (calories/gram-degreeC). Marble is the same. Steel is much less at 0.12.
On the other hand, steel is three times as dense so holds more heat per inch of thickness.
-
I guess the old timers sitting a pot or dutch oven on rocks heated by a fire knew what the were doin'....
-
Spose that's why grills are made a steel. I shoulda done the chicken thighs last night on the block, they were real good but woulda been something different with salt infused..next time.
-
Go for it boob...I'm behind ya on this one!! :happy1:
-
Boober.....O Boober...wanna know how da salmon turned out....
-
It's thawing as we speak
-
Well, experiment #3 done. So far this thing packs a lotta salt in the meat no matter which way its cooked. One more to go, chicken thighs, if they turn out salty then I'll be turning this block to ice melt... :angry2:
-
O crap....... :undecided:
-
O crap....... :undecided:
hey what the heck I thought you were on your way to buy one!!!!! :rotflmao:
-
After Boober completes the testing.... :whistling: :doah:
-
Don't look good..... might have to put the aluminum foil on top of the block.... :doah:
-
The one major mistake I've made so far is not getting the block up to temp. You know how it is , can't wait must cook now! With the thighs hopefully I can get the big charcoal to burn hot then cook fast on the block. Might hafta start the experiments over.....stay tuned!
-
Sure do! Got unto an argument with the tummy tonite! He won....
-
I dunno not know but all that trouble I'd be pitching it.
-
I found the only way to cook with these without your food being too salty is it must be hot before using and to cook things that only take at most 3 minutes per side. It's best for seafood like shrimp, scallops, tuna. I know most of you except for del don't want to hear this but really the only way to use this for meat is for searing so that means the meat had probably been cooked in the sous vide.
-
Hmmm...what if ya dunked some unhusked ears of cawn in water, lay on that block, and cover it.....
-
I'll hafta try that, maybe not so hot with tgem to let the salt work it's way in. :happy1:
-
Hmmm.....salted herring? :rotflmao:
-
Thighs turned out super, the old grill still didn't get real hot so I fried em on both sides for a bit then slid tgem on the grate to finish.work in progress. Sliced up sweet taters in the cast iron!
